We'd all love to have an iPhone but unfortunately not all of us have the cash to stump up for one. Don't worry though, because if you've got a Palm device you can at least pretend to have one of Apple's great inventions.

You might think that the Palm OS is a little antiquated now and to some degree you'd be right, but using iPhoneImitation you can disguise that fact with an interface that is remarkably true to Apple's new wonder device.

Once installed, the program embeds itself on your device and can be launched with an icon. The alternative Startup screen looks very similar to the iPhone, with some lovely animation. In fact all of the menu items are animated with a series of plush icons that replace the rather drab default Palm ones.

Another added bonus in this software package is the Pocket Tunes skin that adds iPod Touch-style control buttons to the MP3 player. It all looks very nice, but be warned that it does have a tendancy to drain battery power so I'd be wary about setting the program as your default launcher.

Nevertheless, this software provides a realistic simulation of the iPhone on your Palm.

It might seem uncharitable to start like this, but I never had high hopes for the Palm version of RealPlayer. Its big brother on Windows has long been a bloated mess of proprietary formats and prosaic protocols. The PalmOne edition seems to be very similar, but for the fact that it is missing many of the features of the Windows client.

Lacking in any capability to play video or streaming audio, RealPlayer for PalmOne is really nothing more than a simple MP3 player with support for RealAudio formats. Its user interface is simple enough, but fairly unattractive.

The only thing this program really has going for it is that it's free.

The dream of being able to watch the latest movies on the bus has now become a reality thanks to advancements in mobile technology. As you probably know, DivX is one of the most popular digital video formats at the moment and, as the name suggests, DivX Player for Palm OS lets you enjoy these movies wherever you go, on your handheld device.

The program lets you watch DivX, AVI or MPEG movies in the player window or in full-screen mode. The installation procedure for this application was a breeze, mainly because there wasn’t one! It was refreshing to see that a simple program didn’t need to touch the registry in order to run, let alone force us to restart the computer (as all Nokia’s apps do). So as soon as you download the program, you’re ready to go. The program itself was pretty easy to use, with controls and settings which should be familiar to anyone who’s even come close to thinking about video compression in the last five years. For those who haven’t, all you really need to do is tell the program which device you’ll be using and it’ll do all the work for you.

Experts will likely balk at the lack of fine-tuning tools available in PocketDivXEncoder but its ‘advanced options’ dialogue allows for greater control over such features as 2-Pass Encoding, XviD Compression, audio Live Effect and more. A really impressive little feature is the live clip resizing tool which allows you to preview your video while changing its dimensions - handy if you’re working with a device which doesn’t have native support from PocketDivXEncoder.

The most important factor in video conversion and compression tools is the quality of the end product. It’s no good reducing a movie to 4MB and rendering it completely unwatchable in the process. PocketDivXEncoder performed admirably when converting our (fairly high quality) test video, achieving good video compression without losing much detail. Small changes we did notice was a slight alteration to colour and brightness balance on the picture and an almost imperceptible shift in audio-video sync. These issues reflect the fact that this is not a professional level tool but then again they’re almost impossible to spot without really hunting for them.

Working with PocketDivXEncoder is on the whole a pleasing, simple and rewarding experience. That a free application can offer such reliable performance and high quality – at levels often missing from other, highly priced software – says a lot about what a good freeware program should look like. If you’re looking to convert video to fit your PDA, all you need is PocketDivXEncoder.

With its original style of gameplay, ease of use and lovable but stupid characters, Lemmings has become one of the most popular and celebrated games ever produced. This version for Palm brings all of the original fun, deft of hand and addictive quality of the original to a handheld format.

For those as yet uninitiated in the rules of the game, Lemmings has a pretty simple aim: try to save as many of the cute green-haired critters as they wander witlessly into whatever peril awaits them. To help you achieve this, there are eight special types of Lemming all with a special talent that the player can make use of: climbers, floaters, exploders, blockers, builders, bashers, miners and diggers. Each of these specialists’ skills will prove invaluable in the seven different maps included in the demo edition.

There are few significant changes to gameplay in the mobile edition of Lemmings – but one handy feature that Ardiri have introduced is Scroll-by-Graffiti, a really handy control enhancement on PDAs. Similarly, the game’s graphics and sound are remarkably similar to the original game. Users of older devices may experience a minimal delay when scrolling the screen, but it should never be so bad that it really impedes your progress.

Lemmings is one of this reviewer’s all time favourite games, and Ardiri’s version for Palms is a clone of pretty much every aspect of the original.

One of the key complaints made by users of handheld computers (both Palm and Windows) is the lack of a high-quality integrated file manager. Programs like FileZ set out to correct this failing by providing a one stop shop for browsing and managing your device’s file structure and memory cards.

The file management tool in Filez is powerful and comprehensively featured. Allowing you to view and alter the attributes of all files on your PDA (including protected ROM files), it represents a massive improvement on the software that ships with your Palm. However, it is advisable that caution is taken while working with FileZ. As is made abundantly clear in the program’s manual, FileZ allows you to edit aspects of your PDA’s system files which could cause irreparable damage to your system. For this reason, FileZ can only really be recommended to expert users.

FileZ also incorporates a system information screen which displays basic information on your PDA’s memory, battery and connection state. This useful function is now commonplace among file manager applications, and often proves a godsend when investigating compatibility, free space and power issues.

In its genre, FileZ hold a special place. Being completely free, open source and containing powerful file editing tools, Filez is a must have for all advanced users and Palm programmers. But it’s because of these powerful tools that FileZ is not recommended to inexperienced Palm owners.

The first thing you need to do to get a cool phone is get a cool ringtone, unless you don't like ringtones and don't want to annoy anyone in which case you'll just keep your phone on vibrate especially when in public. Not that I have anything against ringtones, of course. However, if you do want a wacky or just your favourite piece of music to play every time someone gives you a call then MiniTones can help you choose any tune you want.

The freeware allows you to select any MP3 or, even better, cut out an extract of a chosen song or composition, for example you like the keyboard intro of Pulp's Common People you can just select that. This is especially helpful when selecting ringtones because the piece of music should only be playing for 30 seconds by which time the call should have been answered or switched to answerphone. One problem is that the software copies the file to the main memory of the Palm, and runs the risk of slowing everything down. So be careful how much music you transfer.

There's so much to love about Formula 1 - the pulsating starts, the perilous overtaking maneuvers, the tactical pit stops, and of course the bikini-clad beauties at the start.

If you're a fan of the motorsport and want to follow the season's thrills and spills on your Palm device then you really shouldn't be without this little app. The program contains a wealth of information about the calendar, courses, tracks, drivers and teams.

The menu structure is clear and simple, and from the home screen you're given the option of choosing from the five aforementioned categories. The 'Championship' section provides a ranking of the top drivers for the season, which is updated as the season goes on.

The 'Calendar' menu gives you a run-down of the order and dates of the races, providing you with details of each course, such as the circuit length, web address, lap record etc., plus the facility for entering the final positions in the season's championship. You also get a basic illustrated map of the course.

Clicking the 'Drivers' menu option gives you a list of all this year's drivers and even test drivers, containing info on them about date of birth, nationality, height, weight, number of races/podium finishes etc. For some reason it doesn't show you how many Grand Prix wins they have, and it would've also been nice to see photographs of the drivers.

Likewise, the 'Cars' and 'Teams' section also doesn't have an option for viewing photos of the vehicles, which I found was a key ommission.

Despite the lack of photography, F1 Season 2008 is chock-full of stats and makes for an ideal companion to the motorsport season.

Palm Desktop is the central interface for data exchange between PC and Palm. This latest edition for Palm brings the first Vista-compatible version of the standard software. The Palm Desktop for Windows Vista, available in a beta version, works with the Smartphones Treo 650 and 680 as well as the Handheld models TX, Z22 and E2.

Some usual features are missing here like a Palm quick install tool and this version of Palm Desktop is only intended for new installations on Windows Vista. It does not support the upgrade of pre-existing Palm Desktop installations to this new version meaning you must uninstall old versions of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager prior to installing. The good news is you can now synchronise Outlook 2007's Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes using your USB sync cable, as well as optional non-wireless e-mail synchronisation. But there are clearly some early problems with this. Let's hope they fix them fast.

Sudoku is by far one of the most popular games to play on a train or bus journey and as such, the format has been cloned millions of times for mobile device (maybe I'm exaggerating a bit).

This game, simply called Sudoku, is one of the most in-depth incarnations of the puzzler I've seen and gives you lots of freedom over how you play it. When you start you can choose to set up the game board yourself, placing numbers on the 9 x 9 grid simply by clicking on a square and selecting one from the pop-up keypad, or using the Palm handwriting pad. It's great because this means you can effectively set the difficulty level of the game manually (there's also an auto option if you can't be bothered to do it yourself).

Once you're happy with the layout you press 'Go' to start playing. One of the most innovative things about the gameplay is that you can choose whether or not you want to 'set' a number. So, if you're not sure if the number will work in a certain square but want to mark your intention to play it you can do so by unselecting the 'Set' option. The number is then displayed in minature and you can add multiple numbers to one square to play around with possibilities.

There's lots of ways to customise the Sudoku board to your tastes, although strangely you can't play around with grid sizes. The only other niggle I found was that the handwriting recognition is a little iffy.

On the whole though, this is an enjoyable Sudoku clone with plenty of options to keep you amused for a long time.
