SplashNotes 1.1 - Outlining tool for organizing your ideas and projects

If, like me, you're rubbish at staying organised then perhaps you need to do something about it. You could, of course, jot everything down on a bit of paper, but quite frankly that's both old fashioned and impractical.

Instead, why not give SplashNotes a try and keep on top of everything using your PDA. The software allows you to manage all kinds of notes and lists on your mobile device, helping you to ensure that you never forget anything and giving you the power to jot down and manage literally any information you like.

Entering information into the program is really easy but where the program really excels is in its categorisation tools. You can create as many categories as you choose and organise them all using an expandable tree structure.

In order to master the program you'll need to spend a fair amount of time practicing in order to discover its many hidden features. Luckily though, there's a very comprehensive online user guide to help you out.

If you want an information manager that gives you total control over your notes, you won't go far wrong with SplashNotes.

Textpad 1.1 - Note taker with alphabetical listings

One of the benefits of owning a Palm device has always been that you don't need to carry around a pen and paper all the time, because the handsets include a built-in note-taking application. This is great, though the Notepad app in Palm is far from perfect.

Textpad is designed to enhance the way you take notes on your handheld, providing an alternative way of creating and classifying notes that can help you to be more productive. The main difference between this and the default notepad is that Textpad allows you to sort all of the notes stored in your memory either chronologically or alphabetically.

Of course, you get all the basic features of a notes program, including the ability to create new notes, save them, edit existing notes, and even share notes via IR. This makes it great for jotting down your thoughts, making lists and setting up tasks and reminders, though it's still far from being a fully-fledged word processing app.

Textpad is easy to get around thanks to a well-labelled interface, though the only slight qualm I had with it is that the application's footprint is rather chunky for a Palm app. On the plus side, its size is this big as it requires no Runtime to use it.

If you're looking for an app that creates and sorts notes more effectively then Textpad fits the bill and can definitely help you improve your productivity in this respect.

Memo2Card 1.0 - Stave notes directly to your memory card

If you use the Memos or Memo Pad application on your Palm on a regular basis then you'll probably have noticed that, somewhat annoyingly, it doesn't give you the option to save and load your text files from a memory card.

Don't panic though, because there is a solution to this common problem, and it goes by the name of Memo2Card, which says it all really. The program is a simple utility that lets you store notes directly on the memory card installed in your device.

Using the software is a breeze and could be operated by a small child it's so easy. It adds an Import Memo function to the Memo options, giving you the ability to select a text file stored on your memory card and open it up for editing.

Likewise, the Export mode is furnished with a new option for storing the file onto your memory card, supporting SD and MS cards. It's a very basic program and these are basically the only two bits of functionality you'll get. It would be nice to see developers of this kind of software really push the boat out and try to offer some other enhancements to Memo along with these options, but I guess you can't have everything.

As a basic tool for importing and exporting text files from memory cards, Memo2Card does it's job well.

Send to Card 1.0 - Send notes, sounds and images to your memory card

One of the things that annoys me the most about the Palm OS is the fact that I can't save all my stuff to my memory card for use on other devices. A lot of apps only allow you to save your information in its native format rather than export it as a file that is readable on a card by other handhelds. Send to Card is designed to help you get around this problem by allowing you to record data to your memory card.

The program adds a new item to your options menu called 'Send to Card.' Thanks to this new option, you can save notes, paragraphs, sounds and even images to a memory card installed ion your device. Just select the text or file, open the menu system and select the new option. Currently, Send to Card is compatible with the Notebook, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and the menu of sounds available by default.

Unfortunately Send to Card is not compatible with many third party applications, but neverthless, it represents a useful way of quickly saving data to external memory.

If you have problems remembering things then my advice to you is to start writing them down on pieces of paper. Although I've lost track of how many bits of paper I've lost, which is why I now have pieces of paper reminding me to look for stray pieces of paper. The other thing you could do is check out Quick Memo.

It's incredibly simple, probably too simple. All you need to do is add new memo entires such as pick the kids up from school, take out the rubbish (garbage), eat food, drink drink. Then check back as many times as it takes to stop you from forgetting. You can add entries to and delete from a long list as often as you wish. But there are no extra thrills like alarms.

Very simple memo aid but you might as well write on paper

Q-Diary is a diary and a little bit more. Most diaries are by their nature full of personal information but with Q-Diary you can further personalise that personal information by adding colours and 'mood' icons (like emoticons). Which means some really personal information.

The idea is that by adding colours that correspond with the importance, emotional significance and category of the information users will be able to see very quickly what kinds of appointments and meetings are upcoming. Combined with this are the usual options of adding 'titles' and 'subjects' but there is currently no quick search of dates by mood icon. However, this is a beta version and the developer recognises the need for improvements. So rest assured.

Word2Doc is a text converter for Palm compatible documents to Microsoft Word and vice-versa. The shareware works with XP, 2000 and 97 and converts Word documents into Palm formats such as DOC, iSilo, TealDoc, RichReader and WordSmith. It is also possible to convert to and from JFile and MobileDB database formats.

Following the installation of Word2Doc in Windows a new menu opens for conversion of text and there's an extensive help guide which offers a lot of advice on how best to install and operate the software. Once the new file has been created you can either automatically send it to PC or Palm or keep it in queue for your next Hotsync. You can even save the file on disk or email it. The Word2Doc also allows nearly all of the iSiloX converter options to be changed. It's a bit of a big package for what can be a simpler task on other platforms but it does work!

ChronMemo is a replacement for the Palm Memos program that keeps track of the date the memo was created, edited and opened, and lets you sort by this date.

ChronMemo is fully compatible with the new memo format introduced with the Tungsten T3 (and found on the Treo 650 and up, T5, TX, LifeDrive, etc.).

Even if you have an older device, you can still use ChronMemo and get the benefit of memos up to 32767 characters long (instead of the 4096 character limit), except that then you will not be able to view ChronMemo-memos in the built-in Memos application (or in Palm Desktop) or vice-versa.

ChronMemo is designed for OS 4.0 and up (including 5.x), but might even work with OS 3.5. ChronMemo fully supports Hi-Res+ and the larger screens of Palm T3/T5/TX/LifeDrive, Sony Clie, Handera, Tapwave Zodiac and Dana Alphasmart devices.

DiddleBug is an application for the Palm family of handheld computers. It is similar to a yellow-sticky note in that it allows you to scribble information onto your Palm device using digital ink. You can set alarms for each note from a pop-up list, and DiddleBug will not let you forget your reminder. In addition, DiddleBug has IntelliBoogerTM extensions that allow you to transfer information from within DiddleBug to other applications, such as the built-in ToDo and DateBook apps.

DiddleBug is based on the Diddle sketching engine, and has similar functionality to BugMe!, which explains the DiddleBug name. Users of Diddle will find the interface familiar, with the same menu shortcuts and the same hideable titlebar.
