PearHoliday 1.1 - List of holidays and festivals around the World

I love a good holiday or festival as much as the next man, but I always seem to forget what days they fall on, so I don't know when it's time to start celebrating. There are more and more days of festivites all the time, and keeping up with them can be difficult.

Step forward PearHoliday, a simple application for Palm designed to help you keep track of the holidays and religious dates for the coming weeks and months. It boasts a database of more than 300 festivities, so that's almost a whole year's worth of celebrating.

The interface is very clutter free and makes it easy to browse through the holiday calendar, as each fiesta day is organised hierarchically by country and religion. It's spectrum is pretty broad too and covers seven countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, UK, USA). The heavywieghts of the religious world are also catered for (Catholic, Christian, Islamic, Jewish), although Buddhist and Hindu festivals are disappointingly missing from the list.

Each entry has its own description of the origins of the festival or why it is marked. Another great thing about PearHoliday is that allows you to export the data into your Memo and Datebook apps on your Palm, meaning that you can really ensure that you never miss an important date in the holiday calendar.

If you want to keep track of all the days you'll be free of work this year, then PearHoliday makes for a nice, simple solution.

Dates! 1.8 - Find the exact time frame between two dates

Don't you just hate those people who say stuff like: "Guess what? It's only 25 days, three hours, five minutes and eight seconds until my birthday?" Well, now you too can annoy people by playing the smart arse date calculation man, thanks to this Palm tool.

Dates! allows you to calculate the years, months and days available between two dates. Conversely, you can also use the program to find out what date it will be in a given number of days. This could be useful for things like calculating when birthdays are, financial planning or organising holidays.

The software is ultra simple to use, but is ultimately a bit basic. For instance, it doesn't include minutes or seconds in the calculations and personally, I would have liked to have some alarm features, where you can set up reminders of important dates.

Useful for one-off date calculations, though hardly an essential addition to your Palm.

MegaHolidays 4.2 - Now all the holidays up to 2015 are available on your PDA!

As the developer of this organisational utility points out, business trips and holidays abroad can be ruined – or enhanced – by the observation of public and religious holidays. MegaHolidays aims to provide information on the holidays in over 400 locations around the world (including city-specific festivals), promising the user advice on the date, duration and background of each holiday.

There’s no doubt that MegaHolidays’ index of holidays is comprehensive. With nearly 3,000 unique celebrations included, a holiday would have to be pretty obscure not to get a mention. Finding a holiday is easy: simply select the country and state you’re visiting and the year’s special days are displayed. If you’d rather search by religion, you can choose from 18 faiths’ holy days. The general user experience is simple and easy.

It’s when you start to experiment with what might be seen as the slightly more advanced features of MegaHolidays that the program starts to feel like a let down. The first example of this we noticed was when trying to filter holidays by location and religion at the same time. Given that both filters are always visible, we thought it would be reasonable to ask MegaHolidays to display, for example, the Christian holidays observed in the USA. However, it seems that once you’ve selected a place, you cannot refine that filter any further by adding a faith query. While not critical, this failure seemed to point to other, perhaps more irritating problems in the program.

MegaHolidays’ publisher proudly states in its description of the program that it includes “brief info about every holiday”. Prior to testing the program, this sounded like it would be a key feature to focus on. After all, it’s arguably pretty easy to find out which days in Chile are holidays but much harder to find out why. Sadly, though, not every holiday has a description. For example, in the United States, Veterans’ day is explained simply and precisely but no guidance is given as to the significance of Thanksgiving. The misleading claim that there was information about every holiday was a real disappointment, as were the occasional spelling errors and factual inaccuracies scattered throughout the application.

Basic integration into Memo Pad and Date Book works perfectly, making it a second’s work to add a holiday to your portable calendar. Another small feature we liked was the ‘days left’ count which allows you to view a countdown to your favourite festival from within the program window.

When it comes to letting you know when and where a holiday is taking place, MegaHolidays could prove an invaluable assistant. That said, it breaks some promises about its advanced functionality, and some of its data may be incorrect. While recommended in the absence of any real competition, MegaHolidays needs improvement before it becomes anyone’s runaway favourite.

Mood Stats 5.3 - Keep track of your daily mood

If you're unfortunate enough to suffer from depression or some kind of mood disaster then it's a good idea to keep a daily of how you're feeling in order to keep on top of things. All of us experience highs and lows in life and Mood Stats provides a useful way of tracking your feelings on a day-to-day basis.

The Palm application contains a simple diary and a mood barometer, allowing you to take brief notes on your day and record your mood from 'very happy' to 'very sad'. The main view makes it dead easy to tap in your information and the program contains bar graphs for monitoring the ups and downs over the course of a month.

As a simple note-taker, Mood Stats performs pretty well. However, it doesn't contain the right functionality for making a detailed diary, and you'll only be able to make one entry per day, so you can't really track your mood over the course of a day.

If you're a little forgetful or have too many holidays and celebrations to remember then perhaps you're in need of a memory aid. I've always found it difficult to keep a diary, mainly because I forget to write in it, as well as forget to read it. And with so many people now keeping all their important appointments and dates in the diary of their mobile, MobileDates seems like a pretty good extra helper.

It comes packed with all the holidays you should be getting off work (up to 2015), which are sorted in order of region (there are 70 countries) and religion. But these are just the basics. You then add new events like birthdays, anniversaries, weddings etc, all the special days you might otherwise miss. It's possible to add little descriptions to this eg what someone might want as a present. This demo is fairly limited but you get the idea.

Date Calc is an extremely simple piece of software that allows you to calculate exact intervals between any two dates. For instance, if you are counting down the days to your next holiday, just input today's date and the date your plane leaves the airport and Date Calc will immediately tell you how long you have to wait. Of course there are other uses for this, but I guessed you could relate to that one.

The interface is very clear and simple to use. You won't need to scroll through a help guide with this one. As soon as it loads it's obvious what you need to do. What's more, the possibilities are limitless. So if that holiday's not happening for another fifty years, it'll still calculate the number of days you need to wait. In fact, perhaps prisoners would find this useful.

If you're forever getting yourself into trouble by missing meetings, not hitting deadlines or forgetting birthdays, then you might want to get TimeOMat installed on your Palm. The application allows you to control the impending arrival of any type of appointment or event from a single window.

It's dead simple to use - to program a new event you just create a new registry entry, define the subject (e.g. Dad's birthday), then the date, before adding a brief description if you so desire. From the main window you can view the remaining days, hours and minutes for each of the registered events. You can even filter them by category or create new categories. As a result, TimeOMat is a very practical tool for making sure you never miss an event or appointment.

So many things to do and so little time to do them. But at least you can keep track of them now and remember to do them later. Many software reminders are overly complicated but ListTrak is quite the reverse. It's very, very simple. All you need to do is create a new list, select the day for that list and then tick the box when you've completed all the duties.

Where ListTrak is a bit special is that you can 'beam' each list to another Palm holder with the same software. So if you find yourself halfway round the supermarket without a shopping list then get someone to send it to you. Why you couldn't just phone them I don't know but it's a nice feature and might come in handy.

DateBk6 for Palm OS® is one of the most advanced calendar applications available for the platform and brings a wealth of functionality not even present in most desktop calendar programs. DateBk6 uses the same databases as the built-in applications and is therefore guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your existing desktop and conduit software and runs on Palm OS 3.5 or later.

Some of Datebk 6's key features are:

Colors, fonts, icons, custom alarms and repeats (on both events and ToDo's) make it easy highlight important events.

Full integration of ToDo's, split-screen display of all databases.

Today screen with plug-ins (VersaMail, SnapperMail, WeatherForecast, battery status, quote-of-the-day, phases of moon - more to come!) and many ways to configure it. Note: some plug-ins written by other developers may only be trial versions which require a separate charge for a fully licensed version, although most are free.

Floating Reminders (advances) for items give advance warning that avoid surprises.

Saved Views make it possible to customize a view and then save it for future use or schedule it with a complex repeat schedule so it gets applied automatically when you want

Alarm Manager shows all upcoming alarms, allows you to silence all alarms to a fixed date/time, or you can designate certain events (such as meetings) to automatically silence alarms.

Quick Entry Templates available in all views insert standard boilerplate items with just a few taps

Weekly View with text shows a week-at-a-glance with the ability to read the appointment text. Year, 4-month and list views are also featured in DateBk6 and even the graphical weekly and monthly views have options to display text.

Use Palm OS categories to separate business from personal use or store calendars of other people, with the ability to beam an entire category to another user.

Colorful icons along with an icon editor provides both useful functionality and a creative outlet.

Sony Clie Support includes support for Small and Tiny fonts, jog dial, PCM Sound Library(OS/4/4.1 only), high density icons and collapsible graffiti on NR-70, NX-70/80, NZ-90 etc. (Half-VGA screen).

TimeZone management allows multiple items in different timezones to be displayed with adjustments in your current timezone.

Flexible purging, separate history database and undelete functions make it easy to manage past events.

Enhanced Date Picker has popup list of all events/ToDo's

Anniversary feature shows years for anniversaries or ages on birthdays - also handles birthday field in proprietary contacts database present on some newer Palm devices.

Link items to other items, so an appointment can link to other related appointments or ToDo's - or to contacts associated with that appointment.

More than 100 other features covering ease of use, and flexible configuration options make DateBk6 one of the best values in Palm OS add-on software.

Support. When you need help, you are talking to highly experienced Palm OS users/developers with a genuine interest in helping you - not novice support technicians at a large company that have relatively little interest in your problems.

All in all, a robust and comprehensive alternative to not only the built in organiser programs in your palm, but the other programs available on the market.

Tsk2Cal transfers completed tasks from todo/PTod database to date/PDat database. Tsk2Cal transfers all the completed tasks in Tasks to Calendar and sets private flags if needed. Undated tasks will be also moved to today if "Undated records to today" is checked. "Archive records" will archive transferred records to PC at the next sync. "Format" is a prefix to Calendar's description. You can include only one %d, which is priority, or no %d at all.

Tsk2Cal searches for new PIM databases first and then starts to find old ones, but please note that Tsk2Cal won't run on OS 4 or below.
