iSkoot 1.1 - Make cheap phone calls on your Palm

Skype is great for making free or cheaper calls from your computer. But what if you're out and about and want to speak to your Skype contacts on the move? Then you need iSkoot.

iSkoot is a free program that puts Skype on your Palm Treo. As a result, you can make calls to people, chat via IM and even receive Skype calls to your mobile. You can also use iSkoot to make cheaper international calls using the SkypeOut service.

Setting up iSkoot is a painless procedure. You just need to select your model, download the installer and enter your Skype ID and password once the client is installed (you can create a new account if you need to). Your Skype contacts are automatically displayed and you can start calling right away by clicking on the name. Anyone familiar with Skype will be able to pick it up straight away, but there is a handy online help section if you need some assistance.

Call quality in iSkoot is generally excellent, and data connection speeds aren't really an issue, due to the way the system works. iSkoot basically connects you to a server which is in turn connected to the voice network via a regular mobile call. The only problem with this method is that it means you may get hit with long distance call charges, since you don't know what the number will be until the iSkoot server makes the call. The upshot of this is that if you're using your phone abroad you could end up racking up a large bill calling home as you will get hit with roaming charges. For making Skype calls in your own country though, the service is great as you bypass the need to pay call charges.

Provided you're only using it close to home, iSkoot offers a great way to chat cheaply on your Treo.

IM+ All-in-One Mobile Messenger 3.21 - Instant messaging program compaitble with MSN and Jabber

With society pushing us to be online and available in our every waking moment, it is hardly surprising that there are a plethora of instant messaging programs available for PDAs and mobile phones. IM+ offers connection to a wide range of networks without becoming too bloated or over-complex. The first thing we noticed after installing IM+ was the simplicity of its user interface. As soon as the program opens, you can get to work configuring your accounts. IM+ lets you access the popular MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL (AIM), Jabber and Google Talk networks, meaning that whoever you need to stay in touch with, IM+ will be able to help you out.

On Windows applications featuring such a range of connectivity, it’s normal to see a complex list of options when the configuration process starts. IM+ simplifies the process of setting up your accounts, and beyond message alerts, contains practically no options to configure. This may put off more advanced users who enjoy tinkering with their accounts but we thought it was a good move on the part of Shape Services (IM+’s creators). The only problem we noticed when setting up our account details was that the ‘backspace’ key on our device’s touch screen keyboard didn’t work. This is of course a small issue, but it slowed us down when we made a mistake.

The contact list display (or ‘Roster’) in IM+ should be immediately recognisable to anyone who’s used an instant messenger service before. Giving you the choice of whether to view all your contacts or just those online, IM+ also sorts your contacts by groups if requested. Selecting an online contact immediately initiates a chat with them, while the holding your stylus on the contact will provide some limited options referring to that contact, such as ‘rename’, ‘delete’ and ‘info’. We were disappointed that ‘info’ didn’t try to display a contact’s full profile rather than just their email address. We thought that a more full extract of the contact’s online profile would have been useful, at least including their birthday, homepage and interests.

Entering the text for sending messages was simple enough. IM+ allows you to copy and paste text from other applications into your chat window; particularly useful if you’re using the program to collaborate on a work project, or even just to send your friend a link. IM+ also supports the most popular emoticons for instant messaging, for those times when words just can’t convey your feelings.

Up against some stiff competition, IM+ is an excellent chat program for your Palm PDA. While it has a couple of small issues and omissions, it is easy to use, relatively small and very stable. In other words, an excellent way of staying in contact even when you’ve got a good excuse not to!

iSilo 5.03 - Read documents on your PDA

I love the fact that I can browse web pages on my Palm device. However, being the intellectual fellow I am, I often like to read long scientific journal entries or pore over long-winded reports and lectures about modern technology. This causes a problem, in that it takes a long time to read them online and I don't want to stay connected too long. Of course, I could download and save the page, but this then puts a burden on my device's memory.

Step forward iSilo, a sophisticated reader for viewing HTML documents and text files on your Palm. The best thing about the software is that it uses a little trick to make these files as small as possible, saving you space on your device. With the help of its sister-Windows application iSiloX, the program converts documents originally saved as Web pages or text documents into TXT format.

As a pay off for the mighty compression rates offered by iSilo, you unfortunately lose some links in the conversion process. Some graphic formats aren't displayed properly when converted, but fonts and tables remain largely unaltered.

Aside from a few niggly display problems though, iSilo represents a great way of compressing HTML and text documents for viewing on your mobile device.

Opera Mini 4.1.11320 - The Mini revolution in mobile browsing

If you've been using Opera Mini on your mobile you'll know all about the benefits its brings. If not, you really should be using it. It's the best way to get the most out of your mobile, making surfing the internet fast, secure and easy, plus you can use photo-sharing applications and subscribe to RSS news feeds from your favourite websites or blogs. And now Opera Mini promises to be even better with this new Beta version.

It still has a fast and free internet connection and when you open a webpage Opera Mini will give you a full-screen view and then suggest where to zoom in to begin reading. Of course you can choose yourself if you are looking for something specific. Importantly the software changes the size of the text so you can get as much information on your screen while still being able to read it. This optimization of pages ensures easy reading. You can even flip the screen to landscape mode to get a better view. And you can bookmark in the usual way. One simple feature I liked was the Opera Mini mouse which allows easy scrolling, an addition that many mobile packages are sorely lacking.

Resco Neeews! 2.31.1 beta - The latest news headlines and analysis in your Palm

While RSS is with us for years, its popularity growths only slowly. The main reason that it is considered a technical topic. That's what Resco News tries to make easier.

Resco News builds on a newspaper analogy. The user defines his personal newspaper from the large number of high-quality feeds, defines the update frequency and that's it. It's matter of seconds and many users won't need more.

What is even better — the newspaper can be exported to the Palm Launcher and becomes thus accessible with a single click as any other Palm application.

Technically skilled users may use other tools frequently met in RSS readers:

Manual feed definition (if one knows feed URL)

Search for feeds by a phrase (relying on Syndic8 engine)

Extracting feeds from given web page

OPML import/export (sharing of the feed lists) via BT, e-mail etc

Other features supported by Resco News:

Newspaper update on the background

User notification about incoming news (blinking asterisk on Treo)

Audio podcast streaming. Currently works for Kinoma and partially tested with PTunes.

Import of the BlogLines user feeds

RSS feeds have revolutionised the way news is published and read. The easy to use syndication system has made it easier than ever to read your news wherever you like - especially on the move. With SplashNews, you can download the latest content from your favourite news site or blog in seconds, from anywhere.

The design of the application is simple and clean and it's pretty easy to open the preset feeds or add your own to the index. We had a couple of problems getting SplashNews to sync at first but once it's up and running, it performs fairly well. The program is ad-supported freeware, much like Google Reader, which is arguably a better alternative if you can be online all the time.

We enjoyed SplashNews's ease of use and simple design but would recommend trying some online services: they can be even better, and take up less room on your PDA.

Accessing the Internet on the move is one of the major benefits of owning a Palm device. However, it can get pretty expensive for certain tariffs, especially if you're charged for the amount of time you spend online, not to mention the fact that some Net connections can drop out a lot. TreoOfflineViewer is designed to help out, adding a new feature to the Blaze browser that lets you load pages and HTML documents stored in the memory.

The tool is very simple to use. Just install the program and a new 'Open File' option will be added to the browser, within the 'Go' menu. From here, you can explore the system's internal memory or one of the expansion cards installed on your device and select the HTML document you want to access. There's even a feature for viewing the source of any page within Memos.

TreoOfflineViewer represents a simple offline browser that requires very little setting up.

Net Contact List 1.1 - Manage the internet details of your contacts

Net Contact List is a manager for storing the e-mail and internet homepage addresses of your family, friends and acquaintances as well as their Messenger nicknames in a simple list. The programme offers two views: Firstly a long list of all your contacts' names. Then when you tap on a name you go to a second window which displays further important details such as e-mail addresses and the internet homepage of the contact. It also includes nicknames for use in popular Internet Messenger accounts.

It's nice to have all the internet details of your contacts in one database but, as someone whose family still prefers phone calls to emails it's not so much use to me. Plus if I want to find a friend or contact's email address then it will be served in my email and messenger account. Which is how I guess most other people work too.

A nice and simple database for holding all the email and internet details of you contacts but it feels a bit redundant to me.

PocketMirror Standard XT 4.3 - Outlook synchronization of default folders on the PC

Palm (formerly known as palmOne) extended the use of select Palm devices* as personal information managers (PIMs) by offering customized Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Memos applications that have more fields than the Palm OS applications built into other devices. Using PocketMirror Standard XT synchronization software, keep personal information accurate and up-to-date in both Outlook and these customized Palm handheld applications. Take basic Outlook information anywhere you to go to be organized and on schedule.

DataFix technology

The DataFix feature detects corrupt records and invalid data and then corrects them when possible or simply removes them and replaces them with the Outlook version. It also removes any corrupted archived records from the handheld.

Global Address List

Now, it’s easier than ever to stay connected and send emails while away from your PC. Compose emails to your corporate contacts just as easily on your Treo 650 or other Palm device as you can while sitting at your PC. PocketMirror Standard XT transfers names and email addresses from the Global Address List to the handheld.

Microsoft Outlook 2007

Don’t skip a beat when you switch to Microsoft Outlook 2007. PocketMirror Standard XT is ready to synchronize with it when you are.

Change Outlook Default Folder

Get the information you want from Outlook onto your handheld. Synchronize your handheld with any single Outlook folder simply by setting your preferred folder to be the default folder for synchronization. This goes for Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes.

Alarms and Reminders for Calendar and Tasks

Have you ever been sitting at your desk and had Outlook and your handheld start beeping alarms and reminders at you? New, flexible options let you synchronize the alarms between Outlook and the handheld, keep alarms in Outlook only, or keep alarms on the handheld only. So, you get to see and hear only the alarms you really need, wherever you are.

Conflict Resolution

When the same item in Outlook and the handheld has been modified between synchronizations, PocketMirror Standard XT now lets you choose how to resolve the conflict: duplicate records, Outlook wins, or handheld wins.

Note Color

Using colors is an effective way to organize information in Outlook Notes. Now, for any new note created in the handheld’s Memos application, PocketMirror Standard XT allows you to choose the color for these new Notes in Outlook.
