I love the fact that I can browse web pages on my Palm device. However, being the intellectual fellow I am, I often like to read long scientific journal entries or pore over long-winded reports and lectures about modern technology. This causes a problem, in that it takes a long time to read them online and I don't want to stay connected too long. Of course, I could download and save the page, but this then puts a burden on my device's memory.

Step forward iSilo, a sophisticated reader for viewing HTML documents and text files on your Palm. The best thing about the software is that it uses a little trick to make these files as small as possible, saving you space on your device. With the help of its sister-Windows application iSiloX, the program converts documents originally saved as Web pages or text documents into TXT format.

As a pay off for the mighty compression rates offered by iSilo, you unfortunately lose some links in the conversion process. Some graphic formats aren't displayed properly when converted, but fonts and tables remain largely unaltered.

Aside from a few niggly display problems though, iSilo represents a great way of compressing HTML and text documents for viewing on your mobile device.

iSiloX is the desktop application that converts content to the iSilo™ 3.x/4.x document format, enabling you to carry that content on your Palm OS® PDA, Pocket PC PDA, Windows® CE Handheld PC, or Windows® computer for viewing using iSilo™. With SplashNews, you can download the latest content from your favourite news site or blog in seconds, from anywhere.

The design of the application is simple and clean and it's pretty easy to open the preset feeds or add your own to the index. We had a couple of problems getting SplashNews to sync at first but once it's up and running, it performs fairly well. The program is ad-supported freeware, much like Google Reader, which is arguably a better alternative if you can be online all the time.

We enjoyed SplashNews's ease of use and simple design but would recommend trying some online services: they can be even better, and take up less room on your PDA.

KwikMaps allows you to select an address from within Contacts application and loads Google Maps page in your web browser, showing the location of the selected address. Useful for reaching friends, favourite shops/restaurants, etc. An Internet connection is required for your handheld/smartphone to load Google Maps page.

KwikMaps cooperates with Contacts application (formerly called Address Book), which is present on most Palm OS devices. In the contact details view, open Contact menu, then tap Connect. Link Synchronizer is a tool to help you synchronize your web browser favorites between multiple computers, using a PalmOS-based handheld.

Once Link Synchronizer is installed and configured, you just hotsync your handheld as usual. When you hotsync on multiple desktop machines, those machines' lists of browser favorites will automatically be kept in sync.
