Platypus 1.00 - Pilot your trusty Platypus and save peaceful Mungola

Being a big fan of the Wallace and Gromit series of films, I've always dreamed of living in a world made of clay. Now my dreams have been realized thanks to Platypus.

You assume the role of an orange flying craft that must save the country of Mungola by blasting the evil enemy invaders out of the sky. Essentially, it's a side-scrolling shooter but with one difference - everything is made from clay.

The graphics in Platypus are like none you'll have seen before. Because all of the elements were actually made from clay and digital captured, it makes for some truly stunning viewing. The animation is pretty slick too, and the splatting explosion effects are some of the best I've seen anywhere. The high-octane sound effects are impressive too and really help to set your pulse racing.

While the visuals in platypus are innovative and unique, unfortunately the gameplay is much the same as your average shooter, and after a while the process of blasting everything that slides across the screen becomes somewhat mundane. There is some stuff to collect and a few power-ups to improve your ship, which adds a little more life to this game.

In terms of options, you can adjust the sound and music volume, rotate the screen, and view high scores, but there's no facility for setting your own game controls.

You'll be blown away by the graphics but once the novelty of this has worn off you'll realize that Platypus plays like any other run-of-the-mill arcade shooter.

Insaniquarium 1.00 - Keep the fish alive and avoid aliens

They say that keeping fish is a relaxing stress-reliever. Well, install Insaniquarium and you may disagree with this theory.

Insaniquarium is a colorful game in which you must keep a tank of fish thriving. You need to feed the fish regularly by tapping on them to release a flake of food. You'll know when they get hungry because they turn green. This is more difficult than it sounds because the fish in Insaniquarium are a greedy bunch and they often cluster together, making it hard to single one out for a dose of food.

There's plenty more to Insaniquarium than just feeding hungry mouths. Along the way, you'll have to collect coins to buy new fish, better food, and even weapons, which you'll need to defeat the alien intruders that come along from time-to-time.

Insaniquarium may be a little strange but it's actually a pretty decent game. There are four different game modes to keep you occupied and the graphics and sound effects are quite amusing, even if the music gets a bit annoying.

Insaniquarium provides an interesting diversion for any fish fanatics out there.

Nicky Boom 1.1 - Help Nicky Boom find his grandfather

The early nineties were something of a boom-time for platform games. Titles like Wonderboy, Alex Kidd and Nicky Boom all featured heroic boys on a quest to save their world.

Nicky Boom, a popular hit on the Amiga back in 1993, has now been ported to mobile devices, and recreates the magic of the original very well. The outline of the story is that Nicky's grandfather has been captured by the evil witch Zoldrane, who wants to steal his secrets. Nicky Boom must get to his granddad by traversing a series of perilous levels, conquering all the various creatures that Zoldrane has turned into her dastardly army.

Nicky Boom proves to be a really fun platform romp that brings the memories of those childhood days spent smashing snails and beating up beetles flooding back. Just like the original, the mobile version of Nicky Boom offers huge worlds to explore, secret areas to unlock, and power-ups and weapons to collect along the way.

The graphics in Nicky Boom are pretty good, although I was a bit disappointed by the rendering of the main character. Due to the way the sprite is drawn he's often difficult to spot against red or orange backgrounds, which can become annoying. The backgrounds are nice though and there's a diverse array of imaginative baddies to battle along the way.

There's plenty of fun to be had with Nicky Boom, and it's pretty in-depth for a mobile title.

Duck Hunt 1.05 - Shoot the ducks to score points

One of the first games I played on the Nintendo NES was Duck Hunt. Many an evening was spent with a blaster in my hand aiming at pixelated fowl on the TV.

Now you can recreate those halcyon days on your Palm thanks to this new version of Duck Hunt. The game sees you take on the role of a hunter, shooting down as many drakes as you can within the three minute time limit. The more ducks you kill, the more your score.

Duck Hunt is a simple concept with a simple control system. All you need to do is tap the ducks with your stylus as they fly past the screen. You'll need to reload your ammo after so many shots by clicking on the 'Reload' button in the bottom corner. Be careful not to hit the precious red pigbirds or the fishermen, or you will lose points.

The graphics and music in Duck Hunt are great fun and the gameplay is pretty addictive. The only drawback is that the game becomes quite repetitive after a while. The backgrounds change as you progress through Duck Hunt, but there's little variety in the terms of the targets or the gameplay.

Duck Hunt is very well presented and it's amusing diversion for a while, but there's little diversity to keep you coming back to the game.

GTS World Racing 1.00.02 - 3D racing game for your Palm

Like many a young boy, I used to dream of one day becoming a famous racing driver. Little did I know that one day I could achieve my goal while sat on the bus.

GTS World Racing is a smart driving game for your Palm. In terms of its presentation, this is one of the best you'll find on the platform. The 3D graphics are very impressive, especially the backgrounds, and the sound effects are pretty realistic too. As for its animation, GTS World Racing handles very well and you get a real sense that your driving a car, unlike those games where it just seems like the background is scrolling above a static vehicle.

The diversity of GTS World Racing is great too. There are 64 different track layouts spread across 16 locations worldwide (only two of which, Finland and Peru, are available in this demo). There are three different kinds of car to pick from, and four game modes to keep things interesting.

One of my favorite things about the way GTS World Racing plays is the Cruise Control feature, which kicks in when you reach top speed and allows you to maintain the same velocity without keeping your finger on the button. On the subject of buttons, GTS World Racing's controls are fully customizable so you can tailor it to the easiest way for you to drive.

There's not much to fault with GTS World Racing, except for maybe it's a little too easy at times and once you've got the hang of the controls you'll soon be leading the pack, even on the hardest difficulty setting. I would've liked some in-game music too, although that said, driving games have a track record of very bad soundtracks, so perhaps it's best the developer chose to omit any music.

If you've got the need for speed, you'll find that GTS World Racing more than satisfies your rubber-burning desires.

I remember playing this game many, many, many years ago: when I wore short trousers and let me tell you I was good. Very good. So it's with much excitement that I've been blasting away at aliens in my near static spaceship.

The arcade action is very much the same as it was, the sound effects beep and crash and the aliens swoop and circle. You simply direct the spaceship left and right and fire straight up at those evil androids. In fact the only thing that's missing is my friend Andrew's mum making me sandwiches.

Krystaloids 1.0.2 - Rediscover the classic shoot-em-up on your Palm

If you're a fan of old-school space shooters then get set for a high octane blast from the past on your Palm.

Krystaloids is a modern reworking of the time-honored format, which delivers all the fun of the original in a superbly-packaged game environment. In terms of the way it looks and sounds, it's more the kind of blaster you'd find in the arcades rather than the sort you'd play at home on your Commodore 64. The sprites are well rendered and smoothly animated and the celestial backgrounds are simply out-of-this-world.

The game itself plays much like asteroids. You need to traverse space in your rocket avoiding meteors and blasting any baddies or debris that hurtles your way. The control system is pretty easy to get used to and you just need to spin your craft in the direction you want to go then hit the accelerator. Along the way you'll get the chance to scoop up power-ups in order to improve your weaponry or defense systems.

In terms of game options, Krystaloids isn't terribly exciting. There's only one difficulty level and no two player mode. That said, you can change the sound and music volume, choose between five languages and toggle the in-game map on and off.

The full version of the game represents an epic challenge and will see you through plenty of bus or train journeys. However, the developer has been particularly mean with this trial version and you only get to play one level with one life and a maximum of three minutes game time.

If you're willing to upgrade to the full version though, Krystaloids represents an accomplished 21st Century reworking of a 20th Century classic.

Lost in the Pyramid 1.2 - Old-style comedy adventure game

Once upon a time computer games didn't have the luxury of fancy graphics to make them appealing to users. Instead, they had to rely a lot more on imagination and original ideas to entice gamers. I remember loads of text-based adventure games that had me gripped for longer than many of today's lavish productions.

Lost in the Pyramid recaptures the magic of those classics in the form of an imaginative quest in which you star as Indiana Bones, a famous archeologist who has a dream one night about a pyramid. After waking up, you must go to consult a psychic who reveals where to start your mission, then it's off into the wild unknown to explore the mythical building of your dreams.

Along the way you'll need to make decisions based on the information presented to you on screen and your responses determine whether you score points and progress to the next stage, lose points, or even lose one of your five lives. The control system is akin to most text-based adventure games, where you need to respond to a statement (e.g. 'Open the door?', 'Go to Africa?', 'Pay the psychic?') by clicking Yes or No (or 'What' to repeat the question).

The responses to your answers can be hilarious at times and this makes the Lost in the Pyramid great fun to play. Some of the put-downs and one-liners delivered by the computer are worthy of a Chris Rock stand-up show. Despite its humorous nature, progressing through the levels in no laughing matter, and some of the puzzles will take you quite some time to complete.

Graphically, the game isn't anyway near as bad as those famous text-based games of old on on the Commodore or Spectrum. There are colorful cartoon pictures along the way that illustrate what is happening, although I felt there could have been more of these, as some stay on the screen for a long time.

Overall though, Lost in the Pyramid is really good fun, and is a big enough adventure to keep you captivated for ages.

Volley Balley 1.62 - Play beach volley ball with some amusing characters

One of my favorite things to do when summer comes round is to head down the beach for a spot of volleyball. And, before you ask, no I don't just do it to watch girls falling about in their bikinis.

Now you can recreate this fun summer sport on your mobile device thanks to Volley Balley, an amusing volleyball game with cartoon graphics. The main protagonists in this one are a couple of characters who look a bit like those guys off the M&M adverts. Your aim is to take control of one of them and hit the ball over the net without it being returned to your side, in order to win points.

The graphics in this one are nice and colorful. The 3D characters are well rendered and the animation is generally good (look out for their little victory dances), and the background image makes you feel like you're really at the beach in the sunshine.

Volley Balley offers a wide range of game options. You can choose which side of the net to play, select from five difficulty levels and alter the number of points needed to win a match. The game also keeps a record of all your stats and there's an online multiplayer mode to pit your wits against other players from around the World.

For all its bells and whistles though, Volley Balley doesn't find a way to alleviate the repetitive nature of the gameplay, and if you're anything like me you'll soon tire of the process of looping a ball up and down a small court with only a limited number of moves at your disposal.

That said, this is a well-presented volleyball game with lots of options that's ideal to take down the beach if no one wants to play the real thing with you.

Par 72 Golf is a frustrating little golf game. The graphics are nice but the gameplay is very slow and jerky. Golf games are a pretty standard format nowadays. Click the club, watch the wind, click for power and click for direction. The problem is Par 72 Golf doesn't come with a direction button. So you just click the power and strike the ball.

That said, it's still as difficult to judge as any golf game and yet again I was rubbish at it. Some graphics on the greens might have helped my putting as it was hit and hope most of the way but the graphics are good and as with all golf games it's difficult to stop playing.

This is a remake of an arcade classic and it has all the speed, explosions, sound effects and music of the original. In fact there's so much happening at once on the screen that you might start screaming as your head spins from your shoulders. The objective is simple. It's a classic 'Space Invaders' style shooter that sees you man a spacecraft with which you need to blast through layers of coloured blocks. As you shoot special blocks you get new weapons and more points. But you don't have to clear all the squares off the screen, just make your way through to the top and then defeat the boss.

The game comes with 28 levels, 13 bonuses, 13 different block types including unpredictable sensors and teleports, thermonuclear bombs and air-cushions. So while it's fast and frenetic it's also very unpredictable. The only guarantee is that your eyes will be watering by the end.

DagazEhwaz 1.5 - Explore 25 levels in this Breakout remake

Arkanoid, or 'Breakout' as we called it in our hood, is one of the longest-running videogames out there, dating back to before some of you dear readers were born. Like all classic games, it's been copied hundreds of times over on a plethora of different platforms.

This incarnation of Breakout is called DagazEhwaz. Don't ask me why it's called DagazEhwaz. It just is. I found this to be a pretty enjoyable version of the game, and it translates well to the small screen.

The format is the same as always: you have a little paddle, located at the bottom of the screen, which you need to slide back and forward in order to hit the ball that's bouncing around. Your objective is to use this system to destroy all the blocks that appear overhead. I'm sure there was once some kind of convoluted story explaining exactly why this was important, but it escapes me now.

Anyway, it's fun to play. There are 25 different levels to work through, increasing in difficulty as you go. There's plenty of variety too, with different blocks that behave in different ways when struck, and loads of power-ups to collect on the way, such as bigger paddles and sticky balls (actually that sounds like the subject of one of those spam emails I keep getting).

Graphically, this one isn't going to win any awards. Everything's really blocky, there are no background images and the animation and ball physics are little screwy.

Nevertheless, if you're out for a bit of old-school gaming fun DagazEhwaz offers this in abundance.

Beach Volleyball 1.0 - Get down the beach

Fancy some fun in the sun? Then get down the beach for a little game of volleyball. This is a limited download as you only get to battle out one point at a time but it gives you an idea of what to expect in the real version.

You can play as girl or boy on the white sand with palm trees either side and the sea just a tiptoe away. The graphics are very good for a mobile game and the babes and hunks are realistic and animate nicely. The sound effects are pretty decent too - there's lots of grunting when you play the ball, and you can hear the waves lapping the shore in the background.

In terms of gameplay, Beach Volleyball is a bit tricky to get into. I found it hard to judge where the ball is going due to the way perspective is represented and it took a while to score my first point. This was made more annoying by the fact that this demo only allows you to play one point per game. The difficulty issue is resolved somewhat by an 'auto-hit' mode where your character automatically thwacks the ball when you're near it.

There are three modes of difficulty in the game, as well as a high scores table, so there's certainly plenty of life in this one once you've mastered how to play it.

Overall though, this beach volleyball game provides a great way to inject some sunshine into your life on a drab day.

Tank Ace 1944 - Take command of a World War II tank

If you've ever dreamed of hopping into a tank and driving across all terrain blasting enemy vehicles to bits along the way then you're in luck because you can now do so from the comfort of your Palm device.

Tank Ace transports you back to the Second World War, charging you with the task of neutralising enemy forces by destroying their tanks. At the start of the game you're presented with a map of Europe and can choose to fight as the Allied, German or Soviet forces in a series of locations across the continent.

The first thing you notice when you climb aboard your tank and set out is the quality of the 3D graphics, which are very impressive for a mobile game. The terrain is well drawn out and animations are realistically slowed down or speeded up depending if you're going up or downhill. Likewise, the sound is impressive and the boom of the gun is as good as you'll hear on any phone-based game.

The control system is very fluid and you'll soon be navigating effectively using the keypad. If you get really stuck you can even call up a control panel on the side of the screen and do it manually. I also like the way you can switch between drive mode and aim mode, as it gives you pinpoint targeting of enemy tanks.

There are two different gaming views to choose from - one where you're watching from behind the tank and an overhead mode. You'll need to using the latter quite a bit because the lack of a radar map makes it difficult to really know where you're going and there's a lot of aimless driving around involved.

One of the things that lets the game down I feel, is the lack of variation in the scenes. It seems that no matter which country you select to play in (with the exception of some snowy parts of Russia), the terrain looks exactly the same, which only adds to the game's monotony. What's more, all of the tanks seem to look and behave the same no matter which force you choose to play with.

On the whole the gameplay is enjoyable although because of a lack of AI the enemy tanks often disappear out of sight even when they know you're there and that you have no ammunition left.

Overall, this is a polished 3D war game that looks great on the small screen but lacks a little variety.

Asteroids 1.00 - Play the Atari classic on your Palm

Asteroids was one of the most popular of all the old Atari classics and many a youth was misspent blasting rocks in an arcade. Personally I couldn't see the attraction of the game, and the stupid control system used to annoy me.

This clone of the game for Java-enabled phones is pretty faithful to the original. You take command of a ship (well, a white triangle, actually) and must blast rocks (blue pentagrams) to smithereens using your laser gun (red dot) without coming into contact with them.

As well as accurately mimicking the blocky graphics of the classic, it plays the same too. You need to thrust and turn using the keys on your phone, which proves to be a pretty intuitive control method. It's not very fast to start off with, so the game is easy to pick up even if you haven't played it before. What's more, the instructions can be called up whenever you want through the Pause menu.

Unfortunately there wasn't enough in this version of the game to excite me because it's basically just a copy of the original. Perhaps with a little innovation in terms of gameplay I would've finally gotten hooked on Asteroids.

I know a lot of people love the original and if you're one of them then this is probably an essential download for your phone.

BlockBuster is a logic game with the elements of arcade - it will be right for both - puzzle fans and action lovers. The main goal of the game is very simple-to remove color squares from the board, but as soon as you start playing, you realize that you need to struggle for victory.

Three skill levels, original interface and amazing skins make your game more addictive than ever.

ZQuake - Quake for Palm

ZQuake is a port of one of the most popular first person shooters, Quake, adapted specifically for Palm. That sentence alone should excite you. But I have a few more. This adapted version supports different resolutions (normal, left-handed or rectangular), uses both the buttons and the pointer, supports infrared keyboards and even includes multiplayer mode via Bluetooth.

As usual in most ports, the performance of the game depends on the technical resources of each device. And you need to have files from the original or demo versions of Quake 3D to be able to launch the game. It's a little complicated to install, view 'Notes' below or the website for more info. But once you get it going, it is, of course, brilliant.

Arcade Reality 1.2 - UFO game which uses your Palm's camera!

No more killing feeble aliens on the tiny 2" x 2" screen! In this game you must handle hostile creatures floating around you in the real world. How is this possible? Imagine you have a device, like night vision goggles, that can detect out-of-this-world objects... and when playing Arcade Reality, your Treo is such device.

How does it work?

Game objects are overlaid on the live camera view (this technology is called Augmented Reality). When you turn around, your motion is calculated based on what is seen by the camera and the game view gets updated accordingly.

As you can see, motion is the key. Unlike most games where you only train your fingers, you must actually move to play Arcade Reality!
