Westward 1.00 - Wild West strategy adventure

If John Wayne were still alive today, Westward would undoubtedly be his mobile game of choice for long bus journeys (or wagon trips, come to think of it).

Westward sees you face the challenge of controlling the Wild West, by building booming towns, exploring unchartered plains, guiding settlers to success, and protecting citizens from outlaws. The game boasts four different locations, with more than 20 levels to explore.

Westward starts with a tutorial level, where a teacher guides you through the process of discovering new lands, fighting bandits, harvesting food and water, and building houses, farms and factories. The controls are well explained and it's pretty easy to pick up the basics from these tutorials.

I like the way that Westward doesn't try to tie you to playing as one character. All of the citizens, sheriffs and deputies can be controlled independently of each other, and the challenge of the game lies in utilizing each one to their full potential.

Like many strategy games, Westward always displays the current tasks that you need to work on, and once you've achieved a mission, a new one pops up straight away. This makes it a game that's awfully hard to put down, because the temptation of playing "just one more mission" is tough to resist.

In terms of its presentation, Westward looks and sounds great with some lovely attention to detail. The background music is typical of those old western movie soundtracks and there are some realistic sound effects. Although the game's graphics are incredibly detailed, I found them just a little bit too small for viewing on a mobile device. What's more, the animation is a little slow and you seem to spend a lot of time waiting for characters to move from one place to another.

Overall though, Westward makes for a rip-roaring, gun-slinging, mobile adventure that's very difficult to put down.

Amazingly simple to play - Unbelievably hard to put down! One of the rare games that you can play all day 'just one more go' at a time.
Revival 3.1.0 - Military strategy game in the style of Civilization

If you're a budding megalomaniac then chances are you've enjoyed playing classic strategy games like Civilization and Populus in the past. Times have moved on though, and it's now possible to play God while you're sat on the train.

Revival is the latest creation from legendary developer Herocraft, charging you with the task of exploring seven planets and 27 continents with one main objective - to conquer them. There are two game modes to choose from. The wimpish 'Single' game, where you start with a home city already built for you, or the tougher 'Campaign' where you literally start with nothing and must build up schools, homes and protection for your community.

Along the way, you'll need to develop your citizens and build them from a bunch of simple archers to a bunch of tooled-up fighting machines. Of course, things are not that easy, and you'll constantly find yourself having to battle invading tribes hell-bent on destroying you. Thanks to some impressive AI, this is no mean feat, as your opponent's armies are aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

The graphics are small but wonderfully detailed and the soundtrack to the game sets the mood perfectly, changing style depending on whether you're building, fighting or training. I found the menu system a little confusing and at first you'll struggle to know exactly what you're doing as you try to suss out the controls though. As a result, I found Revival difficult to get into, yet with a bit of persistence you get the hang of the way it works, and start to relish the prospect of battle.

If you're a fan of God games and if you have the patience, Revival makes for a great download for your Palm device.

Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe Version 1.1 - Boost your brain power

Let's face it, whoever came up with the Brain Training series of games probably doesn't need to play them themselves. Judging by the mammoth success of the series, they already have plenty of brain cells up there.

The great thing about Advanced Brain Training is that it's not just a gimmick. I've tried them before and been pleasantly surprised with the improvements in my powers of recall and ability to solve logic puzzles. Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe is designed to provide the ultimate workout for your mind, allowing you to carry it around with you everywhere on your mobile device.

The game consists of a series of modules designed to boost your brain power over time. Each module is broken down into exercises that test different mental abilities. For instance, the first module included in this demo version includes three different tests based around memory, logic and mathematics, all of them executed in the form of fun challenges with nice visuals.

The first task is to memorize shopping items and their prices. These items then pass along a checkout and after that you must try to remember how many of each item was bought and what the total cost was. This is a lot trickier than you might imagine (well, for me at least). Then it's on to the logic element, where you need to remember two shapes before working out which of the four patterns they've been made to create. Finally, it's on to a quick-fire addition and multiplication test.

The great thing about Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe is the way the puzzles are presented. Rather than just setting a series of tasks that you need to scroll through, some thought has gone into the way your development is realized on screen. So, you get to choose from two coaches each with their own personality (Bill and Ann), who guide you through each of the modules, giving you advice and feedback on your performance. You can also track your progress over time through charts and graphs that appear whenever you complete a module.

While some of the tasks seem a little too tricky at the start, the beauty of the brain training format is that when you view your progress chart, you will, more often than not, see an upward trend, proving that you'd be a dummy not to give it a go.

Well-presented and fun to play, Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe offers a pleasant way to expand your gray matter while you're sat on the bus.

3D Tic Tac Toe 1.00 - Tic Tac Toe in three dimensions

The subject I excelled most in at school was Tic Tac Toe, and few of my friends could beat me at this. Ultimately they beat me at every other subject though, which I guess is why I'm sat here reviewing Tic Tac Toe games while they're all performing heart surgery.

Anyway, this particular incarnation of the game ups the bar a little by allowing you to play Tic Tac Toe within a 3D environment. It represents an interesting challenge for seasoned players who are perhaps getting bored of the traditional 'flat' version of the game.

You play against the computer and must lay down a cross in a square on one of the three levels. As usual, the aim is to connect three of your pieces in the same row. Only this time the rows can go up and down and diagonally through three dimensions. And this time, you don't win outright by joining three in a row - it's the player with the most rows or columns at the end who wins.

In terms of its graphics, 3D Tic Tac Toe is pretty awful, and the way it's presented as three separate grids is a little confusing and could have been better executed. I would've also liked to have seen a two player mode because the computer is pretty handy at the game (even by my high standards).

An interesting diversion from the traditional game, but lacking in presentation.

In order to train for the day I take over the Universe, I thought I'd try out StarAttack, a Palm game that sees you use your strategic powers to win over the planets. The object of the game is to conquer Space by commanding your own fleet and defeating the enemy. In order to do this you won't be using a speedy rocket, laser guns or splatter bombs. Oh no, you'll be fighting your battles using - numbers. Hmmm.

Once you get over the fact that the game has no graphical elements it's actually pretty engrossing as you think your way around the gameboard, ensuring that you have numerical advantage over the enemy in order to progress. There are a few decent options, including a two player mode, and hints that help to improve your game.

If poker is your game why not use this great mobile version to hone your skills before heading to a casino to take all their grubby money. Eric Snider's Video Poker is an exact replica of the arcade machines that you will find in casinos, if you visit casinos. Rather than taking on other players, you play the machine by trying to make the best hand you can. This includes two pairs, flush, royal flush etc. There's a handy help guide in this one to tell you what you need.

Each round you choose between five levels of betting and decide how many of your cards to hold for the next draw. Then either count your winnings in the top right or watch the money disappear. There's nothing too flashy about the game and it can get a bit monotonous but the action is nice and fast with simple 16 bit graphics plus detailed statistics to help you keep tabs on your account. Mine was flashing red.

In this updated version of the Windows classic Minesweeper there are loads more options and even more frustration as you try to avoid the little explosions. Set the size of the playing field, choose from hexagonal, square or triangular shapes (not that it makes much difference) and get playing.

It's all very familiar - tap on a shape, clear the area of landmines, stick a red-flag where you think a little bomb is hiding and keep those fingers crossed. I've always found minesweeper a confusing game that should somehow be made a bit simpler. But then my brain's not so big.

But there's a chance to escape and it doesn't involve any giant rolling stones or organs made of skeletons. Actually, I think that was The Goonies.

This is really quite a simple puzzle game. Direct your explorer towards the exit using the walls to stop the mummy from catching you.
We all remember the classic matching pairs game on the old Nokia handsets, but Match takes things a stage further by offering Palm users the chance to test their powers of recall in a full-colour graphical environment. The principle of the game is the same - you're shown a series of pictures before they're turned over and you must match the pairs. We felt that perhaps Match could give you a little more time to take in the pictures, as you only get a couple of seconds to look at the game board before play begins.

That said, the program is just as fun as the original and the addition of cutesy graphics and sound effects makes the whole thing more enjoyable. Although you can change the number of tiles on the board, there aren't many other options for customizing Match, and we'd have liked to have seen a setting for changing the pictures that are displayed. Like the original though, it's the perfect way to kill some time on a bus or train trip.

Napoleonix 1.1 - Take on the role of the great tyrant (or his enemies)

In the beginning of the 19th century after becoming the emperor Napoleon started to pursue the policy aiming at ensuring French political and economical hegemonye over Europe. During 1799-1815 France was waging war against Austria, Russia, Great Britain and other countries.

Do you want to repeat the success this great commander had at Marengo, Austerlitz, Wagram? Or maybe you want to stop one of the greatest tyrants of Europe?

You’ll be given an army which you can use for implementations of your plans. The army is made up of units, any of them has different capacity, and the stronger the units are, the less of them you have. Moreover, there are also units that have some peculiar skills. For instance, sappers can neutralize the enemy’s mines, a spy can kill the enemy general, and a brave can sacrifice himself to win any other unite.

You don’t like strategy games, and you prefer chess or card games? Then, this game is for you too.

Napoleonix is a logical turn-based strategy game for two players (though it can be played by one person against the computer as well). The game presents a successful combination of strategic and tactical planning employed in turn-based strategies, it also has some elements of applying physiological pressure towards the opposer (bluff being one of them) which are used in a number of card games. The main thing about this game is that your opposer doesn’t know where your bulk strength is dislocated. This makes it possible to carry out diversionary maneuvers, complicated readjustment of force, make attacks and commit counterattacks. So, the main goal of the strategy is to get the actual information on where the opposer’s forces are dislocated.

VavilonExpansion 8.1 - Gripping realtime strategy game

From the creator of numerous popular freeware titles (notably Panzer Assault and Chaser) comes the new adventure title VavilonExpansion. An old fashioned strategy game, VavilonExpansion challenges you to build your resources, troops and workers in order to conquer the territory surrounding your village.

The game’s graphics and sound effects are both far above what one would normally expect from a freeware game – with attractive maps and animations, along with great battlefield sounds. VavilonExpansion’s game play is also good for a freeware game, although it can become a little repetitive after extended periods of play. Having said that, the depth of the strategy – its tech tree, different military units and trade possibilities are all pleasant surprises in a Palm OS game.
