Brixster 1.1 - Eliminate the blocks to reveal the picture

If you're looking for a simple puzzle game to kill some time on the bus then install Brixster onto your Palm.

Brixster is an easy-to-play game where your mission is to reveal the picture behind the grid. You do this by connecting Tetris-style blocks together in order to complete lines. Once you've made a line, the blocks in that row will disappear and a part of the picture behind will be revealed.

Brixster is one of those games you can pick up and start using without really thinking. Moving the pieces is just a matter of tapping on the piece you wish to move then clicking on the space you wish to insert that block.

That's about it really. There aren't any options or settings to speak of, and you simply proceed through increasing levels of difficulty. Unfortunately the demo version of Brixster is quite limited, and you can only play a maximum of five levels before the trial runs out.

Nevertheless, if you want a quick-fix of puzzle action, Brixster provides an amusing diversion.

3D Mines 1.2 - Innovative minesweeper-style game

Minesweeper is one of the all-time classic PC timewasters, and 3D Mines adds literally a whole new dimension to the game.

3D Mines is based around the same principle as the original game, which, of course, comes packaged with Windows. The objective is basically the same (i.e. to clear the minefield without blowing a mine) only this time the board is three dimensional.

The controls in 3D Mines are really simple. You just tap on one of the squares to reveal how many mines surround that one. Remember though that this time, this number represents mines that may be above or beneath this square, rather than just to the side of it. You can move the 3D board very easily by clicking and dragging it around and the animation is pretty smooth.

As with Minesweeper, 3D Mines is great fun to play and more than a little addictive to boot. What's more, the game is highly customizable - there are several different minefield shapes to choose from, and you can also set the dimension, the mine density and the spike density.

The graphics in 3D Mines aren't exactly ground-breaking and I felt the overall presentation could do with a bit of a polish. There's no sound in the game either.

That said, 3D Mines represents an enjoyable new twist on an old favorite.

Vegas Pool Sharks 1.0 - Play pool on your Palm

Pool is one of those games that you think you're going to be really good at until you step up to the table and realize that it's actually much tougher than it looks.

Vegas Pool Sharks gives you the chance to hone your skills in the hustlers' playground that is Las Vegas. You'll get a chance to fleece money from some of the most canny players in the casino. Alternatively you might lose your house.

Vegas Pool Sharks sees you compete against four different computer opponents who vary in their level of skill. I would've liked to have seen a few more characters just to add a bit more variety, but there are three different game modes to help you mix things up a bit.

Vegas Pool Sharks boasts some surprisingly accurate ball physics making it a fairly realistic pool simulation for a mobile device. The 3D views are great and you can zoom in and out or tilt the angle of your cue fairly smoothly. Thanks to some helpful aiming hints it should be quite easy for you to get to grips with Vegas Pool Sharks.

Although it lacks the all-important two player mode, Vegas Pool Sharks is a fairly accurate pool simulation that will keep you amused for some time.

LifeGame 3.0 - Create life on your Palm

Back in 1970 a Cambridge mathematician called John Conway invented a 'game' called The Game of Life, based around cellular automation. Almost 40 years later, and his invention is now available on the Palm in the shape of LifeGame.

The basic premise of the Game of Life, and also LifeGame, sees life played out on a grid of square cells. A cell can be 'alive' or 'dead' as time goes by. A dead cell with exactly three neighbors becomes a live cell, which is known as the 'birth'. A live cell with two or three neighbors survives. In all other cases a cell dies or remains dead.

What you can do in LifeGame is create patterns and select pre-made patterns of cells and put them into 'battle' with each other. You simply choose the cell formations you want in both the blue and the red boxes then hit the 'Game' button and LifeGame will initiate the movement of the pieces before your eyes. The cell formation with the most individual cells left at the end is declared the winner.

LifeGame is not your average Palm game. There's no action, little human interaction and it's not very well presented. It's an interesting representation of the Game of Life though, for those who are into that kind of thing.

LifeGame may interesting if you like math, but I found no excitement in it whatsoever.

Crazy Daisy 1.10 - Spin the flowers to join the petals

Normally my macho image would prevent me from playing games based around joining flower petals together. However, once I tried out Crazy Daisy I found it quite difficult to put down.

The object of Crazy Daisy is to spin the seven flowers around in order to join up matching-colored petals. When a connection of petals of the same color is made the petals then pop away and you reap the benefits of a whole bunch of points.

It's a very simple game to control and yet Crazy Daisy is remarkably absorbing. The process of spinning the flowers puts you into a kind-of dreamlike state where you don't really have to think about what you're doing - just watch the petals fall off the flowers and listen to the cute noises they make. There are three game modes to try in Crazy Daisy, and you can export your high scores to share with friends.

For this reason Crazy Daisy is a good time-waster, however, perhaps the more hardcore gamers will be put off by its overly-cute graphics and sounds and the repetitive nature of the gameplay.

Still, Crazy Daisy represents a good way to kill some time on a long bus journey.

Outcast 1.2.1 - Group shapes together in this intelligent puzzle game

Palms are great for playing puzzle games, and I've lost count of the number of trains, business meetings or dates I've missed through being immersed in some riddle or other.

Outcast is the latest brain-bender I've tried and it's definitely got a high distraction factor. The object of the game is to organize the different patterns into groups. You need to start by moving one piece away from the edge and then filling the space with another piece that matches one of those around it. You keep doing this until you've grouped as many pieces together as you can.

There are certain rules you need to abide by when moving people and these are all outlined in the Help section. It will probably take you about three or four reads to understand it completely, as it's not written in a very clear manner.

Once you get going you'll find it hard to stop playing such is the addictive nature of this one. It's surprisingly difficult to master and I defy you to complete all the groupings - I certainly haven't! Even if you do then there are three different grouping set-ups you can try.

It might not be much to look at, but Outcast is certainly one of the more engrossing and original puzzle games out there.

Cliks2 1.1.12 - Wipe out the symbols in this amusing puzzler

Tired of those same old sudokus and Tetris games on your Palm? Then check out Cliks2, an innovative puzzle game that will have you glued to your device for hours.

The main object of the game is to remove all of the various symbols from the gameboard. You do this simply by tapping on one, then any that are conjoined will be removed and the remaining symbols will shuffle down. The aim of the game is to wipe the board in as few moves as possible.

Graphically, Cliks2 isn't going to win any awards, but it's fairly colorful and the symbols are large enough to be clicking on with the stylus without any problems.

It's the gameplay where this one really comes into its own though, and it's so addictive that you'll probably keep missing your stop if you play this one on the bus. The challenge of starting again to lower that total is simply irresistible. And with two different game modes to complete, the challenge remains alive for some time.

It may not look that great, but like all good puzzle games, Click2's genius is in its addictive gameplay.

Text Twist 2.13 - Uncover the hidden words

There are lots of mobile games around these days that sport fancy 3D graphics and convoluted plots, but sometimes the simplest games are the best.

Text Twist is a word-based puzzle game that will have you gripped for hours, especially if you're a fan of crosswords or Scrabble. Your objective is to make as many words as you can from the 6 letters given to you. The words must be a minimum of three letters long, and if you can guess the 6 letter word you progress to the next level.

To be honest, this game is not much to look at, and there's no diversity in terms of the graphics as you progress through the game. But boy is it addictive! You'll find yourself coming back time and time again to try cracking the puzzles. You're aided in your quest by the ability to 'twist' the letters, jumbling them up to help you think better about what words you can make from them.

You have two minutes to finish each puzzle and a high scores table keeps you coming back for more and allows you to take on your friends at Text Twist.

Text Twist provides a fun, brain-bending way to kill some time on the bus.

Bejeweled 2 1.30 - More addiction and entertainment in this second installment!

Games for mobile devices come in a wide range of styles. While many are effective ‘ports’ (or copies) from more mainstream gaming platforms, shrunken down to match small screens, lots are invented especially for PDAs and feature gameplay elements and features which really make to most of what small devices have to offer. Bejeweled 2 is one such game. Built specifically for Pocket PCs and PalmOS PDAs, this impressive game features outstanding gameplay, beautiful graphics and guaranteed stability, even on slower devices.

The object of Bejeweled 2 is simple. Swap neighbouring jewels to create lines of three which are then eliminated, only to be replaced by the jewels above them. Wisely avoiding a complex gameplay style, all operations are performed with the stylus (a far better control method than the joystick on Pocket PCs). When you start a game of Bejeweled 2, you’re given brief instructions and reminders for how to obtain your goal. If you’re stuck and can’t find any jewels to swap, Bejeweled 2 will notice and after several seconds of inactivity it gives you a small prompt as to which jewel you should try swapping. This feature is perfect for beginners and can be easily switched off from the main menu.

Bejeweled 2 offers four distinct game modes, each of which is playable in the excellent trial version we used for this review. ‘Classic’ and ‘Action’ modes are similar, except that ‘Action’ play includes a dynamic time-bar which you have to keep from running out. ‘Puzzle’ mode offers a series of increasingly difficult set-piece puzzles which you have to complete in order to unlock higher levels. ‘Endless’ mode is, as the name eloquently suggests, Bejeweled 2 without end: with no target or time limit, this is perfect for players who are looking for a couple of minutes’ game time. Bejeweled 2 also features a screensaver which can be set to display a series of the stunning game backgrounds, along with time and battery data.

While Bejeweled 2’s gameplay is excellent, its graphics are the key to what makes this game really enjoyable. From the already mentioned background images to special effects on individual jewels, Bejeweled 2 has been designed to constantly impress. Rich sound effects and a tuneful soundtrack make the experience complete. Graphics, sound and music can all be controlled from the Options menu, but we found that the more intensive settings didn’t cause any problems on slower test devices.

Bejeweled 2 is, if you like, that rare gem of PDA games. Original, stylishly designed, easy to pick up and highly addictive, it will enchant beginners and keep more experienced players entertained for weeks and months. If you have one game on your PalmOS PDA, let it be Bejeweled 2!

Tangram 5.0 - Join the pieces in this baffling puzzle game

You may not know what a Tangram is, but I guarantee that as soon as you start playing this Palm game you'll remember it from when you were a kid (or you from now, if you are a kid).

The object of the game is to position your seven pieces in the right place in order to mimic the picture you're displayed. The pieces must not overlap and you must use all of them. You can rotate the pieces and move them using your stylus. This is fine but there's no option to rotate them anti-clockwise, meaning it often takes ages to spin back around to the right angle if you overdo it.

If you're thinking this is boring then you're wrong, because Tangram is packed with variety. There are three difficulty levels to play, containing around 200 puzzles. What's more, you can choose between two model sizes, where the small one is the most difficult owing to the fact that you can't overlay the pieces on top of the model. You can even play against the clock to really test yourself.

Graphically, Tangram is colorful enough and you can customize the textures of the pieces to add even more variety to the game.

Although positioning the pieces can be cumbersome, Tangram still represents an addictive and mind-boggling challenge.

Snow Lines 1.1 - Put a smile on your face with this wintery puzzler

I've never been a big fan of the winter and the cold weather normally induces the outbreak of a giant frown across my forehead.

The freezy season seems to have had the same effect on the colored faces featured in Snow Lines too. Luckily though, you can turn their frowns upside down simply by joining them up in lines with other faces of the same color, to make them smile. I say 'simply' but in actual fact this game turns out to be a lot trickier than it sounds.

You can connect matching colored faces together in lines that run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, so there are plenty of options. Unfortunately for you, what starts off as a grid with just a few faces on quickly becomes a frenzy of freezing frowns as more and more of the little critters pop up in squares at random across the game board. What's more, you can only move a face if it isn't blocked by other faces, which quickly becomes the case, especially in the later levels.

Although it represents a serious challenge of your vision and dexterity, I'm happy to say that Snow Lines is great fun to play. There are several different game modes (Arcade Game, Progress Game, Timed, etc.) and loads of levels to get through.

The colorful graphics are cute and lively and the sound is simply excellent. Normally I become annoyed with the repetitive ditties that loop in the background of these kind of puzzle games, but the dreamy tunes in Snow Lines made me want to keep the sound turned on. The SFX too are pretty funny, and the cries of joy that leap out of the creatures when you join them up make you all warm and fuzzy inside.

The only thing I felt Snow Lines lacked is a little more variety. It would've been nice to have some different power-ups to collect or more diversity in terms of the game backgrounds.

Nevertheless, if you want cheering up on a glum day, Snow Lines provides a great remedy.

Vexed 2.2 - Highly addictive puzzle game for Palm OS

Don't you just hate those long bus journies where you've got nothing to read and your battery has run out on your MP3 player? Personally in these situations I pull out my mobile phone and settle down to a stimulating puzzle game.

Vexed is just the game for these kind of trips and lives up to its name by providing you with hours of brain-bending fun. The purpose of the game is to clear the board by matching up colored blocks. You can push the blocks from side to side and allow gravity to send them down but you can't move them upwards, which is where your powers of logic are tested to the limit.

Some of the levels are infuriatingly difficult and yet it becomes impossible to stop playing them such is the desire to not let them get the better of you. Even after you've finished a level you're still only a tiny fraction of the way through the game because there are hundreds of levels organised into different 'packs'. Even perusing the names of the levels is entertaining, as each pack has its own theme, from Beatles songs to U.S. cities.

There are quite a few options to play around with, such as customizable block sets, sound effects and scoring. In-game options include solutions, undo, view remaining blocks, and more.

A multiplayer mode would've been a nice addition, but overall Vexed is a brilliant bus boredom buster.

Zion 1.2 - Create rows and columns of matching pieces

I've lost count of the number of mobile puzzle games that are based around building rows and columns of matching pieces and here is another one for the collection.

The object of Zion is to make horizontal and vertical piles of three or more pieces of the same kind. Once you've joined them together you get some tasty points, which will vary depending on how many pieces are in the row or column.

The installation of this one is a little fiddly because you need to install each of the background image files individually, as well as the .prc file itself. There are four backgrounds to choose from, namely: animals, landscape, sea and space and each makes for a pleasant backdrop to the game. The graphics of the pieces aren't particularly exciting though and it would've been nice if there were different sets of tokens for each background.

It's a well-worn gaming format though it's still pretty challenging and great fun to play. There are also quite a few gaming options, three levels of difficulty and a high scores board to keep the enthusiasm going for a while.

Though not exactly ground-breaking, Zion represents a fun way to kill some time on a bus journey.

Rubix Redux 2.00 - Brain-bending puzzle game

If you were around in the 80s then you're sure to remember one of the greatest inventions of that era - the Rubix cube.

Personally, I never managed to solve one of those oh-so frustrating colored bricks, so I thought I'd have another stab at completing it by trying out this 2D version of the puzzle on my mobile phone.

Rubix Redux plays in a similar way to the original only this time you only need to rotate the blocks on horizontal and vertical axes, so that every row or column is the same color. Unfortunately, this makes it no-less difficult, and I ended up wasting hours trying fiddling around with it. Needless to say, I came pretty close to throwing my phone at the wall on several occasions.

The game itself is neatly presented without being too flashy. There is a choice of four difficulty levels, each with a different number of squares that increase with difficulty. You can save and load games, and Rubix Redux keeps a record of all your stats and high scores. It's fun to play, though the repetitive nature of trying to match the colors up can become awfully infuriating, especially as there are no in-game hints.

If you want to revisit the days when colored cubes were more popular than video games then Rubix Redux makes for an interesting incarnation.

Drop Off 1.00 - Test your reflexes with this ball-rolling game

It's amazing how the simple things can sometimes be the most enjoyable, and Drop Off is testament to that.

The game has nothing in the way of graphics or sound, or even color and yet it's virtually impossible to put down. Your mission in this one is to roll a ball down a series of platforms by dropping it through the hole in each one.

Sounds easy right? Well, it's not because the platforms are scrolling upwards all the time and if your ball gets caught on a platform when it reaches the top of the screen then it's game over for you. To make matters worse, the scrolling gets faster and faster th longer you keep going until you're pretty much just relying on luck and reflexes rather than any conscious skill.

At first I thought it was easy, and managed to rack up a whopping 100,000 points on my first go, but it then took me ages after this to replicate it. And that's the beauty of this game - you'll keep coming back time and again to try and conquer your own personal best and this becomes equally infuriating and mesmerizing.

The graphics are awful, there's no sound and nothing in the way of options, yet Drop Off will have you hooked for hours.

Jumber - Brain-bending number puzzle

It seems that everyone is obsessed with playing Sudoku these days but personally I've got a bit tired of the format and am hankering after something a bit different.

When I clapped eyes on Jumber I was immediately intrigued, for here was a number puzzler with a difference. The aim of this one is similar to Sudoku in that you need to fill an entire grid with numbers but it's there that the similarity ends, because in this Palm game you don't need to think about the numbers themselves but rather the position they are in.

You start with a grid of 5 x 5 (i.e. numbers 1 to 25), or 10 x 10 (1 to 100) and must add the numbers to the grid sequentially. However, you can only add the next number to certain squares around the one you just selected, which are highlighted in yellow. It takes a while to figure out which squares will be available (there's no Help in the program to explain it), but once you've sussed out the pattern your scores will soar.

The gameplay is kind-of a cross between Sudoku and Minesweeper and it proves to be good fun. I found myself just tapping randomly at first but gradually started to think more tactically and fill up more of the grid (I got to 74). Ultimately the game is very repetitive and despite the fact that games are timed, once you've reached 100 you probably won't want to go back and play it again too much.

Nevertheless, it's a fun diversion to kill a few minutes on the bus.

Plantastic! 1.00 - Plant and arrange flowers in this colourful puzzler

I'm a particularly keen gardener but unfortuately I live in a flat with no garden so I can't put my green fingers to good use. However, I have just discovered Plantastic! for Palm, which lets you grow flowers on your mobile device.

The basic purpose of this one is to arrange flowers in a garden based on their colour. It's kind of a convoluted version of Dr Mario, where once three touching plants of the same colour are connected they disappear. Once you've joined a certain amount of flowers you're able to progress to the next level.

It's pretty easy to get into Plantastic! thanks to an in-depth Help section and a tutorial that guides you through what you need to do before you enter the game proper. In fact, I felt this tutorial was a little too long and it's annoying that you have to complete it every time you play.

Once you're involved in the action though it's a fun game to play, if a little easy. The levels are pretty simple to get through, despite the addition of obstacles such as Mr Mole, mushrooms and fast falling flowers. That said, there are a number of cool power-ups to collect and a series of five game modes (four of which you'll need to unlock) to make Plantastic! more interesting and improve its longevity.

The graphics are cute and colourful and the overall presentation of the game is impressive. The sound effects are fun, as is the little ditty that plays in the background. As with most of these type of games though, it does become somewhat irksome after a while.

Overall though, Plantastic! is an engrossing puzzle game for getting your fingers dirty on the bus.
