Cpick is one of those small apps that can make a difference in your day to day work. It's basically a color picker, that is, a tool that enables you to obtain codes for any color you see on the screen. Cpick currently supports hex, decimal, RGB, CMYK and HSV.

But Cpick includes some extra tools that make it even more useful. The sliders on its interface, for instance, enable you to create new colors by moving them from side to side. You can also create lists of colors – and save them for later – and generate complete CSS style sheets to use on your website.

There's nothing seriously wrong with this little handy app. The only drawback, if any, is a somewhat old-fashioned interface design that would benefit a lot from a little overhaul.

This color picker sits unobtrusively on the system tray, while you're concentrated on your work. Then, whenever you need to select a certain color on your screen or know its correspondent code, simply grab the program's icon with your mouse and drag it on top of that given color. A small window will show the code and copy it to the clipboard as soon as you release the mouse's button.

Instant Eyedropper supports several coding languages (HTML, Hex, Delphi Hex, VB Hex, RGB and HSB), but lacks the ability to store a bunch of selected colors in a palette, something that you can find in other similar tools.

If you're a designer who gets stuck for ideas or just someone looking for color themes for their home or wherever, having color palettes to hand can be really useful. Based on Adobe AIR, kuler desktop is a neat widget that lets you browse new and popular color themes from Adobe's kuler site.

The kuler desktop interface is really attractive, and you can 'tear off' any theme you like and drag it around your desktop to wherever you need it. If you use any of Adobe's Creative Suite (3 and above) programs like Photoshop, you can import any theme directly into your work.

The only problem with kuler desktop is it sometimes struggles to connect to its API. It's annoying having to restart the app because it's not refreshing images. However, most of the time it's fine and can be really useful.

Peacock Color Picker works in a slightly different way from other similar tools: instead of selecting the color right on your screen by means of a special cursor, Peacock Color Picker captures a given area of the screen and selects the color only from this area. I personally prefer the first method, which is easier and faster. Also, the capturing tool doesn't show capturing boundaries too clearly, so you don't really know what you're going to get.

The program also enables you to open a given photo and select colors from it, although the image is displayed in such a small window that you can't really work with it. Plus, Peacock Color Picker features the possibility to build several different color palettes, but unfortunately you can't add screen colors to them (only Windows palette ones).

This easy app gives you detailed information about each single color you hover your mouse over on the screen, enabling you to reproduce it in any third-party graphic editor. Pippete doesn't need installation, and can be run from a USB thumbdrive too. The interface has a window that shows the selected color, and underneath are representations of that color in lots of different formats. Pipette covers RGB (as absolute values, percentages and in hexadecimal notation), CMY, CMYK, HSV, TColor and XYZ (CIE) color formats. Each of these values can be quickly copied to your clipboard with a single click for use in other programs.

To select a color, you click and hold the Pipette button, then move the mouse cursor to the place on the monitor you need. When you release the mouse button, Pipette will remain where you left it, so you can use those color values however you need. Pipette's useful if you're doing some design, and you want to grab a color you like from somewhere. The multitude of color formats is good, but in all honesty it's overkill - for most jobs RGB will be enough.

Overall, this is a fine application for grabbing absolute color codes. The last neat feature of Pipette is its inbuilt color list, which saves the values of the colors that you have analyzed. This isn't saved when you close the program, but is a useful way of keeping hold of values while you work.
