Alarm programs for the Pocket PC are much of a muchness generally. However, G-Alarm offers a slightly more interesting way to wake up.

G-Alarm, which is designed for the HTC Touch Diamond, offers all the usual features you'd expect from an alarm application. You can set multiple alarms each with different names, select which days of the week you want the alarm to go off, set a fading volume level and define vibration alerts.

You can choose to wake up to your favorite tracks simply by browsing to the audio files on stored on your device or storage card. What's more, G-Alarm allows you to select different tracks for different alarms.

The unique feature of G-Alarm though is the fact that in order to turn off an alarm or activate a snooze you must first complete a maze puzzle. Although the mazes aren't particularly difficult I thought this was an excellent addition as I know how easy it is just to keep tapping the snooze button in the morning. G-Alarm forces you to complete the maze game before you can snooze, meaning you've actually got a bit of time to think about whether you've really got time to go back to sleep.

So, if you're a bit of a snooze button addict G-Alarm could be the perfect way to stop you from oversleeping.

Let's face it, the built-in Calendar in Windows Mobile for Pocket PC isn't up to much. It's clunky and fiddly to operate and makes it difficult to quickly check the date and make appointments.

ThumbCal is designed to replace the default calendar on your handset with one that's easier to use. It's certainly a lot clearer, with big buttons as the dates that can be easily touched with a finger. If you run the app with its bundled skin you'll get a slick black interface with white numbers and grey highlights.

By clicking a date or tapping it with your fingers you can access a menu where you can select 'Today' to return to the current day on the calendar. You can choose 'New' to make an appointment for a particular date. Or at least, that's the theory. In practice, I couldn't get the feature to do anything, probably because this is an early alpha version.

Nevertheless it's good for checking dates in the future and goes up beyond the year 2100, so you can literally plan the rest of your life on it. As you flip through the years, the calendar scrolls upwards, which looks pretty cool. Again though, it's hit and miss as to whether this feature will work.

ThumbCal is a great looking, easy-access Pocket PC calendar app which is unfortunately let down by bugs and glitches.

If you use a Windows Mobile Pocket PC then you'll probably have noticed that the built-in clock on the today screen isn't particularly thrilling.

If you want to add a more attractive and functional clock to the main screen of your device then you could give Pocket Digital Clock a try. The application replaces the network provider information section on the Today screen with a large white-on-black digital clock display. The clock displays hours, minutes and seconds, and it also shows you the date above the timepiece itself.

The program is a bit awkward to install - you need to reset your device after installing the CAB file and even then I had to play around a bit with files and registry keys. Once it's running it looks pretty slick though and has a very small memory footprint so you shouldn't notice any adverse effects on your device's performance, like so many plug-ins cause these days.

Ultimately though, Pocket Digital Clock doesn't really add any amazing new functionality to your device. The fact that the preset Windows Mobile time and date display appears above the clock highlights the fact that this app is merely duplicating what you already have.

However, if you want a clearer way to quickly check the time, Pocket Digital Clock does an adequate job.

Ever find that one countdown timer just isn't enough? Me too, and that's why I installed TouchWatch on my Pocket PC.

Imagine you need to do several things at once like boil an egg, run a bath, marinade a chicken, and wash some clothes in the washing machine. Ordinarily you would need four separate watches or timing devices in order to track how long each one has got left. Not with TouchWatch though, because the program lets you run up to four timers simultaneously.

Configuring the timers in TouchWatch is a simple affair. You just need to touch one of the four timers on display and use the corresponding arrow buttons to set the hours, minutes and seconds (you can't enter these manually, unfortunately).

Among the other features of TouchWatch are the ability to set auto notification and vibrate notification. You can also customize the background image and notification sound, although you'll need to enter the path to these files manually as there is no 'Browse' button.

It still feels very much like a Beta release (which it is) but TouchWatch is nevertheless an easy way to run multiple countdown timers.

PhatWare have a history of finding a weak spot in Microsoft’s Pocket PC software, and developing a new application which not only fills the gap but adds new features you’ll never live without again. PhatNotes continues this fine tradition by improving Microsoft’s barely-there Notes support while also replacing Pocket Word in the process.

Notes are, to this reviewer at least, one of those functions you’d expect that your PDA could really handle: after all, how much use is a Pocket PC that can’t adequately handle note-taking tasks? However, Microsoft’s built in support for Notes is so prohibitively designed that many users find they use it once then forget all about it.

PhatNotes brings power and multi-functionality to Notes. PhatNotes allows you to set up multiple databases of notes, each with multiple categories, which sync automatically when you connect your Pocket PC to your main computer. This makes it easy to categorize and sort your notes in a simple and convenient manner. Or, if you choose, select and drag text from any drag’n’drop friendly application (Firefox, for example) straight into PhatNotes’ desktop application, and in seconds, it’s saved to your PDA. Similarly, PhatNotes supports Microsoft Word documents on its own. As far as we could discern, there were no key features missing from this support. Indeed, PhatNotes has arguably the better interface.

In its basic functions, PhatNotes is easy to use, quick and reliable, but in some more complex operations, we found it a little less intuitive. Synchronising attachments (image files, for example) seemed like a useful function to have. It would be nice to quickly and simply add a map or a photo to a note which you’re taking with you on the road.

While the documentation provided with PhatNotes helped us set up attachment syncing in minutes, the feature itself is somewhat lacking. Any file you wish to attach to a note must already be in the shared documents folder for your device on your desktop PC. In other words, it pretty much already needs to be on your handheld. With the leaps and bounds being made in storage these days, we think that the time has come for programs like PhatNotes to automatically handle this sort of task. A feature we’d like to see in the future is attaching any file on your desktop PC to a note, and PhatNotes automatically making a copy of that file in your sync folder. After all, surely the general idea here is automation, not making the user check whether a file is in some folder.

Another gripe, though with potentially less impact, is the process for deleting databases. It would seem obvious that if you wanted to delete a database, you could select it (either on the PDA or the desktop computer), select ‘delete’ from a context menu, confirm and that’s it. However, PhatNotes asks us to disconnect our Pocket PC, delete the database on both it and the desktop, and then reconnect. This ungainly process could easily be automated, if necessary with a special warning, or an option to leave the database on the pocket PC, desktop PC or neither.

It is what PhatNotes brings to the table though which should be remembered. Despite the trouble with attachments and databases (features which Microsoft hasn’t even tried to include), are tempered by a very simple and enjoyable user experience with the more basic of its features. This program offers lots now, and hints at more to come… just like the developer that created it.

I love the fact that I can browse web pages on my Pocket PC. However, being the intellectual fellow I am, I often like to read long scientific journal entries or pore over long-winded reports and lectures about modern technology. This causes a problem, in that it takes a long time to read them online and I don't want to stay connected too long. Of course, I could download and save the page, but this then puts a burden on my device's memory.

Step forward iSilo, a sophisticated reader for viewing HTML documents and text files on your Pocket PC. The best thing about the software is that it uses a little trick to make these files as small as possible, saving you space on your device. With the help of its sister-Windows application iSiloX, the program converts documents originally saved as Web pages or text documents into TXT format.

As a pay off for the mighty compression rates offered by iSilo, you unfortunately lose some links in the conversion process. Some graphic formats aren't displayed properly when converted, but fonts and tables remain largely unaltered.

Aside from a few niggly display problems though, iSilo represents a great way of compressing HTML and text documents for viewing on your mobile device.

There are plenty of list managers around so, to be good, new software packages need to offer either something very different or lots and lots of options. ListPro has always offered both of these things but now it has some great additions. Firstly the new formatting options make it easy to arrange all your plans exactly as you want including with bullet points and numbers. You can also now quickly access websites if you need to get some more information.

One of the best features is the 25 new templates that are provided to get things done extra quickly so you don't have to start from scratch the whole time. This can prove a bit disappointing as they are not always exactly how you want them, but in terms of getting lists finished quickly they are a great addition. Also you can now share your lists with other users which is a great idea in theory and especially helpful for 'favourites' lists with subjects like music etc.

If, like me, you're forever forgetting people's birthdays and incurring disappointment from your friends and family who think you don't care about them then maybe it's time to change things.

What I like most about Best Birthday is the way in which you can quickly sort your contacts based on a variety of factors, such as by name, date or number of days left until their birthday. I always keep it set on the latter filter, so I know exactly who it is I should be thinking of buying for next. There's also an option to 'split' the contacts, either by birth month or zodiac sign, a neat little way of packaging different people together.

Amongst the options, you can tick a box to display anniversaries as well as birthdays, and there's even a feature for composing message templates for quick sending when it comes to someone's big day. Perhaps the inclusion of a 'Notes' section would've also been useful for recording gift ideas for each contact in advance.

When I was younger (in fact, it still applies now) I always wanted to have James Bond's Miss Moneypenny as my secretary. As I grow older, I realise this is becoming less and less likely to happen. However, I've just stumbled across a mobile app that will give me almost the next best thing.

Agendus is an excllent personal information manager designed to make you more you a more productive human being through your Pocket PC. The application combines the different standard applications such as address book, notepad, tasks and email, and supports data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook.

It's incredible to be able to manage and access so much information from one place, and it surprises me that Microsoft couldn't have come up with its own Agendus when it developed the Windows Mobile OS. The program centralises a huge range of tasks, including managing contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, SMS and emails.

There's a whole bunch of stuff you can do with this information using Agendus, such as displaying data in daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly views, grouping, editing and deleting. A powerful built-in full-text search ensures that whatever you need is always close at hand. Everything is very simple to synchronise too, using ActiveSync.

Thanks to an intuitive centralised interface and some slick integration with Outlook, this really is a product you can't afford to be without if you have a busy personal or professional life.
