If you frequently travel on business trips you may find it difficult to keep track of all the expenses you need to claim back when you return to the office.

You may want to check out Easy Expenses, which is designed to log all of your work-related spending on the move. Although the user interface within Easy Expenses takes a bit of getting used to, once you've got the knack it does facilitate quick, finger-friendly data entry.

Once you've clicked the 'New Item' option in Easy Expenses you can choose from a list of three currencies, before entering the amount of your expense just by clicking squares which correspond to each decimal placing. You can then record other information into Easy Expenses such as the expense type, date, source and the payment method. All of this entering is done via drop-down menus, and, as with entering the amount, it would've been nice to have some way of entering values manually.

Nevertheless, it is possible to edit the default values in Easy Expenses, so you can choose your own currencies, expense types, payment methods, etc. Easy Expenses also lets you export the data as a text file for viewing and editing in other applications. It would've been nice to have a few more advanced features in the program, such as currency conversion or an option for recording where you were on each trip.

On the whole though, Easy Expenses provides a useful way of recording your expenses as they happen.

When used in the same phrase, the terms 'personal' and 'finance' are guaranteed to send a shiver down even the most sturdy spines. Most of us dread having to crunch numbers to find out how much (or how little) cash we have at our disposal.

I used to poo-poo the idea of using a personal finance management program, because I was adamant that I could take care of everything in my head. Of course, in reality, I couldn't and after using a money manager on my PC I realised that it makes so much sense to use a computer to balance the books.

I've now taken things a stage further by installing Pocket Finance Diary on my Pocket PC, a tool which allows you to log and track income and expenditure on a daily basis. It means that every time I want to make a big purchase in a shop I can find out how it fits in with my monthly budget.

The program itself is a breeze to use. All you really need to do is enter an expense or an income, selecting the date and inputting a description (shopping, bills, wages, etc.) The program will then add this to your monthly list, which is presented very clearly complete with colour-coded entries for incoming and outgoing entries.

I always love a good bit of filtering in a data management app, and Pocket Finance Diary has this in abundance, allowing you to browse only income or expense for month, or view spending by category. You can also list movements between two specific dates, modify records, and export them as a CSV file.

If you want to keep track of your finances on a daily basis, I can't recommend Pocket Finance Diary highly enough.

All of us hate paying bills but unfortunately until the day that utility companies make everything free they're a necessary evil. Parting with money is always going to be painful, but you can take the sting out of it a bit by installing a billing management program.

Bill Buddy lets you take care of your outgoings using your Pocket PC, providing you with a simple database for logging due billings. As long as you have the .Net Compact Framework installed, the program is a breeze to set up. The interface is basic but practical, displaying all the outstanding bills for a particular month, along with their due date.

You can add a new bill entry very simply, just by clicking 'New' and entering the date you received the demand and the date it's due, selecting the month, day and year from a drop-down menu or calendar display.

Once you've entered data you can quickly view it in list format to clearly see what you've still got left to pay each month. To edit an entry or mark it as paid you need to select it from the list and choose 'Modify' from the 'Options' menu. Call me lazy, but I would've liked one-click access to the entry, but I guess you can't have everything.

If you're the kind of person who blows all their cash at the start at the month then finds themselves severely lacking by the time the next payday rolls around, then perhaps it's time to do something about it.

Likewise, if you run a business and need to keep track of your accounts and staff payroll, perhaps you need some kind of accountancy software. PocketKeeper allows you to get a grip on your finances on the move. The program lets you control multiple bank accounts simultaneously, working with different currencies, defining categories and subcategories, creating and budget planning, and registering all kinds of movements (expenses, revenues, transfers, receipts, etc.)

The program is characterised by a simple set-up procedure, and a logical, well-structured user interface. Through a series of icons at the top of the screen, you can access the various features of the application, such as the registration of movements, accounts, categories, budgets, statistics and tools.

The level of reporting and the amount of graphs you can create with PocketKeeper is very impressive, and you can switch between different views easily. You can even set up different 'Projects' and assign a budget to each one, making this software highly versatile for all levels of use.

Your accounts are exported as a CSV file, which you can save to your phone's memory, or to an expansion card. The program even supports back-up and restore features, to ensure that your data is safe. It would've been nice to have an option to import finanicial data in QIF format, but I guess you can't have everything.

Overall, PocketKeeper is a well-designed program that gives you quick access to powerful financial planning and reporting features.
