Live Search Mobile 3.0.3 - Use your phone to find local information

Nowadays when most of us think of 'search' we think of Google, and now that the company's Android platform has been launched, it's even easier to find out information related to a particular area while you're on the move. That doesn't mean that other search providers should be discredited though, as Microsoft's Live Search Mobile proves.

Live Search Mobile is designed to help you find information that matters most while you're mobile. This includes maps, driving directions, details of local businesses and restaurants, movie show times, and cheap gas stations.

The Live Search Mobile interface is pretty easy to work with once you get used to it. You simply choose a location from the list, or set one by browsing to it on the integrated Live Earth map, before entering a business you want to search for. You can also browse for businesses by category, such as entertainment, government, services, travel, etc. Once a list of matching companies or services has been found, you can view their addresses and telephone numbers, which you can click on to make a call instantly. Alternatively, you can get directions to any of them, save it to your contacts, or send it via SMS to a friend.

I was impressed by the amount of results returned by Live Search Mobile, although this depends very much on where you are. If you're searching for places in the USA or UK, you'll usually get a wealth of information. However, it's much more difficult to get access to businesses and information in other countries, making it almost useless for residents of these countries or travelers visiting from abroad. This goes too for the extra functions in Live Search Mobile like gas prices, traffic information and movie listings, which are only available for the US. The Weather and Web functions do work everywhere, though.

Overall though, Live Search Mobile is a fantastic tool for looking up information on the go, especially if you in the US or UK.

Tiny Twitter 1.8.4 - Tweet from your Pocket PC

If you can't get enough of Twitter and want to keep tweeting even when you're not at a computer, then give Tiny Twitter a try.

Tiny Twitter allows you to check your Twitter feeds and send tweets from your Windows Mobile device. Ultimately, it represents a much cheaper way of spreading the word from your mobile than using Twitter's SMS-sending function.

Using Tiny Twitter is a straightforward affair for anyone who has used the Twitter service before. Once you've signed into your account, you're presented with a list of the latest updates from the feeds you're subscribed to. Adding your own updates is simply a matter of clicking 'Tweet' and tapping in your message. Tiny Twitter lets you know how many characters you've got left as you type. Like the full Twitter, the app allows you to insert photos, taken from your camera phone into your message. You can even enter your precise location automatically by harnessing your device's GPS capabilities.

Although there are some useful interface customization tweaks and synchronization options in its settings menu, Tiny Twitter is still very much a stripped-back version of the Web service, and many of the profile management and people-finding tools of Twitter aren't included.

Nevertheless if you're keen to keep up with updates and spread the word about what you're doing every second of the day, then Tiny Twitter represents a handy mobile solution.

WMWifiRouter 1.10 - Turn your Pocket PC into a router

Since getting wireless installed at home, I can never imagine being chained to a modem ever again and love the fact that I can do my banking in bed or check the football results in the bath (in theory obviously. Don't try that at home).

If you want wireless but don't fancy buying a wireless router, or if you're trying to establish a connection away from home then get a load of WMWifiRouter. As the name suggests, the program transforms your Pocket PC into a mobile router for wireless Internet access.

The free software utilises the UMTS or EDGE protocols to link up with others connected via wireless devices. The application takes a bit of setting up and you'll need to enter lots of data concerning the wireless network. Unfortunately there's precious little help available within the program itself for doing this.

Once all these settings have been established, the program automatically sets up an ad-hoc network called 'WMWifiRouter'. If, for any reason the installation fails you can access the appropriate network parameters via WMWifiRouter_NoNet.CAB.

If you have the patience to get the thing set up, WMWifiRouter provides you with a handy way to use your Pocket PC as a wireless router.

iSkoot 1.1 - Connect to Skype on your Pocket PC

Skype is great for making free or cheaper calls from your computer. But what if you're out and about and want to speak to your Skype contacts on the move? Then you need iSkoot.

iSkoot is a free program that puts Skype on your Pocket PC. As a result, you can make calls to people, chat via IM and even receive Skype calls to your mobile. You can also use iSkoot to make cheaper international calls using the SkypeOut service.

Setting up iSkoot is a painless procedure. You just need to select your model, download the installer and enter your Skype ID and password once the client is installed (you can create a new account if you need to). Your Skype contacts are automatically displayed and you can start calling right away by clicking on the name. Anyone familiar with Skype will be able to pick it up straight away, but there is a handy online help section if you need some assistance.

Call quality in iSkoot is generally excellent, and data connection speeds aren't really an issue, due to the way the system works. iSkoot basically connects you to a server which is in turn connected to the voice network via a regular mobile call. The only problem with this method is that it means you may get hit with long distance call charges, since you don't know what the number will be until the iSkoot server makes the call. The upshot of this is that if you're using your phone abroad you could end up racking up a large bill calling home as you will get hit with roaming charges. For making Skype calls in your own country though, the service is great as you bypass the need to pay call charges.

Provided you're only using it close to home, iSkoot offers a great way to chat cheaply on your mobile.

Download iSkoot 1.1 in Softonic

Opera Mobile 9.51 Beta 1 - Super-fast Web browser for your Pocket PC

Let's face it, navigating the Web on a Pocket PC using the default IE browser isn't a very pleasant experience. Its fiddly controls, unreliability and tardiness have led many to look for replacements.

To date, I've found Opera Mobile 8.65 to be the best of the bunch. However, this beta release of version 9.5 is even better, and shows that Opera has what it takes to conquer the PDA web browsing market. Opera Mobile 9.5 furthers the high standards set by the previous version, in terms of speed, features and easy-of-use.

The interface has been completely redesigned and is all the better for it. Don't get me wrong, it was good before, but now everything is so easy to reach and touch-friendly that it's almost as intuitive as browsing the Web on your PC.

What I liked about the user interface in Opera Mobile 9.5 is its no-nonsense approach. It's subtle and yet practical, to the extent that you don't really notice it's there, but when you need it it's very easy to do what you want. The stylish gray and black design keeps things as minimalistic as possible, while the large buttons make for easy access to common browser features, such as favorites, tabs, and the back and forward commands.

On the subject of features, the latest incarnation of Opera Mobile is stuffed with them - you can add multiple tabs, save pages for offline viewing, share content via SMS, MMS and email, organize your log-ins with the password manager, and access pages quicker with auto-fill addresses. Perhaps my favorite addition though is the new page zooming tool, which allows you to get a closer look at the page with a double-tap of the screen. Another double-tap will take you back to full-screen viewing again. It's one of those features that's so cool and yet so simple, you wonder why it wasn't done before.

You might be thinking that all these cool new goodies will slow the notoriously speedy Opera Mobile down - not so. Somehow the developer has managed to package everything into a browser that seems t run a fair deal quicker than version 8.65.

Because this is a first Beta release you can't expect it to be perfect and indeed it's not. Running Flash plug-ins and embedded streaming video is out of the question because ActiveX is disabled, there are some problems when you try to install it on portable storage, and the text wraps in overview mode.

I'm sure these bugs will be ironed out in time, and when they are I think we'll be talking about Opera Mobile as arguably the best way to browse the web on a Pocket PC.

BandSwitch allows you to take control of your connections, by enabling and disabling connections. Disabling connections makes impossible to use them so you know they won't generate traffic data. You can also establish and close connections, as well as set a time frame where connections won't be allowed (i.e., when you are sleeping), saving you both money and battery..

IM+ (IMPlus) 5.3 - Chat with friends on multiple networks

With society pushing us to be online and available in our every waking moment, it is hardly surprising that there are a plethora of instant messaging programs available for PDAs and mobile phones. IM+ offers connection to a wide range of networks without becoming too bloated or over-complex. The first thing we noticed after installing IM+ was the simplicity of its user interface. As soon as the program opens, you can get to work configuring your accounts. IM+ lets you access the popular MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL (AIM), Jabber and Google Talk networks, meaning that whoever you need to stay in touch with, IM+ will be able to help you out.

On Windows applications featuring such a range of connectivity, it’s normal to see a complex list of options when the configuration process starts. IM+ simplifies the process of setting up your accounts, and beyond message alerts, contains practically no options to configure. This may put off more advanced users who enjoy tinkering with their accounts but we thought it was a good move on the part of Shape Services (IM+’s creators). The only problem we noticed when setting up our account details was that the ‘backspace’ key on our device’s touch screen keyboard didn’t work. This is of course a small issue, but it slowed us down when we made a mistake.

The contact list display (or ‘Roster’) in IM+ should be immediately recognisable to anyone who’s used an instant messenger service before. Giving you the choice of whether to view all your contacts or just those online, IM+ also sorts your contacts by groups if requested. Selecting an online contact immediately initiates a chat with them, while the holding your stylus on the contact will provide some limited options referring to that contact, such as ‘rename’, ‘delete’ and ‘info’. We were disappointed that ‘info’ didn’t try to display a contact’s full profile rather than just their email address. We thought that a more full extract of the contact’s online profile would have been useful, at least including their birthday, homepage and interests.

Entering the text for sending messages was simple enough. As usual, we found the Transcriber feature to be the easiest and most accurate method of text entry, but this is very much a matter of personal preference for the individual user. IM+ also allows you to copy and paste text from other applications into your chat window; particularly useful if you’re using the program to collaborate on a work project, or even just to send your friend a link. IM+ also supports the most popular emoticons for instant messaging, for those times when words just can’t convey your feelings.

Up against some stiff competition, IM+ is an excellent chat program for your Pocket PC. While it has a couple of small issues and omissions, it is easy to use, relatively small and very stable. In other words, an excellent way of staying in contact even when you’ve got a good excuse not to!

Youtubeplay 1.0.0.7 - Search for and play YouTube videos

If you've got a YouTube dependency and find it a struggle to tear yourself away from the video site for more than a few minutes then perhaps it's time you started logging on from your mobile.

Youtubeplay is a Pocket PC app that allows you to do just that, giving you the facility to search and play clips from the website very quickly. It does this through a very minimalist interface where you can enter a keyword, view the results, then select a video and play it using the built-in video player.

There's nothing too fancy about this program, and you won't be able to access the full compliment of features that you'll find on the site itself. The only real player features you have are the ability to play, pause, rewind and forward through vids, along with a fullscreen mode.

It would've been nice to see some kind of feature for ripping clips to your phone and saving them in other formats, but I guess these kind of goodies would only serve to slow down what is, in essence, a fast and lightweight solution for playing online video.

If you're addicted to YouTube and want to access the service from your Windows Mobile device, youtubeplay represents a fast and easy-to-operate way of doing so.

PocketOutlook Eraser 1.1 - Quickly delete all your Outlook data

It's great being able to access Outlook on the move on Pocket PC, but I often find the process of synching with my desktop a little annoying. It's often difficult to properly sync because you don't necessarily want all the mail data automatically copied across, and if you have the same infomation on your handset and your PC, these entries won't be synched after pairing.

PocketOutlook Eraser provides a simple, lightweight solution for removing contacts, tasks, and appointments from your device. Not only does it make synching a lot easier, but it also frees up memory on your Pocket PC by getting shot of stuff you don't need anymore.

The best thing about this app is its simplicity. You simply need to check the records you want to delete from Outlook, and the program automatically takes care of it. The only disappointing thing is that it doesn't support all email clients.

If you're looking for a tool to clean up your Outlook data, you'd be hard-pressed to find something easier than PocketOutlook Eraser.
