Duck Hunt 1.01 - Shoot the ducks to score points

One of the first games I played on the NES was Duck Hunt. Many an evening was spent with a blaster in my hand aiming at pixelated fowl on the TV.

Now you can recreate those halcyon days on your Palm thanks to this new version of Duck Hunt. The game sees you take on the role of a hunter, shooting down as many drakes as you can within the three minute time limit. The more ducks you kill, the more your score.

Duck Hunt is a simple concept with a simple control system. All you need to do is tap the ducks with your stylus as they fly past the screen. You'll need to reload your ammo after so many shots by clicking on the 'Reload' button in the bottom corner. Be careful not to hit the precious red pigbirds or the fishermen, or you will lose points.

The graphics and music in Duck Hunt are great fun and the gameplay is pretty addictive. The only drawback is that the game becomes quite repetitive after a while. The backgrounds change as you progress through Duck Hunt, but there's little variety in the terms of the targets or the gameplay.

Duck Hunt is very well presented and it's amusing diversion for a while, but there's little diversity to keep you coming back to the game.

3D Owen's Monster Truck 1.1 - Race monster trucks on your Pocket PC

As a kid I used to dream that one day I would drive a monster truck. Little did I know that one day I would be able to do it using nothing but my mobile, thanks to 3D Owen's Monster Truck.

In 3D Owen's Monster Truck you take the role of Owen, or one of his three racing-mad pals and must battle it out against each other on the track. The good thing about being in a monster truck is that you can roll over small obstacles, and in 3D Owen's Monster Truck you get to use a series of weapons and power-ups to help you knock your opponents off course or put them off.

The overall presentation of 3D Owen's Monster Truck is generally very good. The sound effects and music are ace, and the graphics are pretty detailed with smooth animation. There are some occasional glitches with the collision detection but not enough to put you off your play.

3D Owen's Monster Truck is great fun to play and reminded me of Mario Kart in a lot of ways. It's easy to control and comes with an auto-accelerate option that lets you concentrate all your efforts on steering, laying traps, and blasting your rivals with weapons.

With five different courses and five characters to choose from 3D Owen's Monster Truck has plenty of variety, although it would've been nice to see some more game modes included in there, such as a Mario Kart-style battle mode.

Overall though, 3D Owen's Monster Truck is a great way to experience the thrill of driving a high-powered motorized beast.

Nicky Boom 1.1 - Help Nicky Boom find his grandfather

The early Nineties were something of a boom-time for platform games. Titles like Wonderboy, Alex Kidd and Nicky Boom all featured heroic boys on a quest to save their world.

Nicky Boom, a popular hit on the Amiga back in 1993, has now been ported to mobile devices, and recreates the magic of the original very well. The outline of the story is that Nicky's grandfather has been captured by the evil witch Zoldrane, who wants to steal his secrets. Nicky Boom must get to his granddad by traversing a series of perilous levels, conquering all the various creatures that Zoldrane has turned into her dastardly army.

Nicky Boom proves to be a really fun platform romp that brings the memories of those childhood days spent smashing snails and beating up beetles flooding back. Just like the original, the mobile version of Nicky Boom offers huge worlds to explore, secret areas to unlock, and power-ups and weapons to collect along the way.

The graphics in Nicky Boom are pretty good, although I was a bit disappointed by the rendering of the main character. Due to the way the sprite is drawn he's often difficult to spot against red or orange backgrounds, which can become annoying. The backgrounds are nice though and there's a diverse array of imaginative baddies to battle along the way.

There's plenty of fun to be had with Nicky Boom, and it's pretty in-depth for a mobile title.

Catchy Cadence 1.0 - Tap the screen to the beat of the songs

Music is great for dancing to, but did you know that it's also makes the perfect accompaniment to chopping wood, playing tennis and making sandwiches? Install Jaybot's Catchy Cadence on your device and you'll find out why.

Catchy Cadence is a free game where you must test your rhythmic abilities by tapping the screen to the beat of a song. It includes more than a dozen games each with its own song and unique storyline and graphics.

What I loved about Catchy Cadence is the sheer diversity of the gameplay. One minute you find yourself hopping on pipes as a robot in a futuristic world to techno music, while the next you're entering a latin dancing competition in a Simple Simon-style beat-matching game. The graphics in Catchy Cadence are colorful and well rendered and all the scenarios are wonderfully presented.

In terms of the music, Catchy Cadence doesn't contain any licensed tracks, so you won't recognize any of the tunes. Nevertheless, the original songs are very catchy and you'll find yourself humming many of them for some time after you've finished playing.

The control system is ultra-simple and you just need to tap the screen in the right place at the right time. Mastering the games in Catchy Cadence is not so straightforward though, as they move at a very fast pace most of the time. Because you can't progress to the next game until you've completed the previous game, this can become frustrating.

Although there's no two-player mode to speak of, Catchy Cadence still has enough to keep you coming back for more, and the novel Extras menu, where you can unlock songs and other goodies provides a good incentive to stay glued to your screen.

If you're a fan of games like Guitar Hero, Rockband or Frets on Fire, then you'll love playing Jaybot's Catchy Cadence.

Flux Challenge 5.0 - 3D racing game in the style of WipeOut

I was a huge fan of Wipeout on the Super Nintendo so I was very excited about the prospect of playing Flux Challenge on my Pocket PC.

I wasn't disappointed either, as the game proved to be an adrenaline-pumping experience that immerses you in a high-speed world of magnetic levitation. The most immediately impressive thing about Flux Challenge is its graphics. Rendered in 3D with smooth animation (providing you have a powerful enough device), this is one of the most visually accomplished Windows Mobile racing games around.

The gameplay itself is exciting and fast-paced, although it takes a while to get used to the control system. What's more, the various obstacles and hazards on the track make Flux Challenge a little too difficult at times.

There's enough diversity in Flux Challenge to keep you amused for hours. You get 24 playable races (not all are available in this demo version), 6 different vehicles, and different three game modes.

Although it takes a bit of practice, Flux Challenge offers a way for adrenaline junkies to satisfy their needs on their mobile.

GTS World Racing 1.00.02 - Set your pulse racing with this racing game

Like many a young boy, I used to dream of one day becoming a famous racing driver. Little did I know that one day I could achieve my goal while sat on the bus.

GTS World Racing is a smart driving game for your Pocket PC. In terms of its presentation, this is one of the best you'll find on the platform. The 3D graphics are very impressive, especially the backgrounds, and the sound effects are pretty realistic too. In terms of its animation, GTS World Racing handles very well and you get a real sense that your driving a car, unlike those games where it just seems like the background is scrolling above a static vehicle.

The diversity of GTS World Racing is great too. There are 64 different track layouts spread across 16 locations worldwide (only two of which, Finland and Peru, are available in this demo). There are three different kinds of car to pick from, and four game modes to keep things interesting.

One of my favorite things about the way GTS World Racing plays is the Cruise Control feature, which kicks in when you reach top speed and allows you to maintain the same velocity without keeping your finger on the button. On the subject of buttons, GTS World Racing's controls are fully customizable so you can tailor it to the easiest way for you to drive.

There's not much to fault with GTS World Racing, except for maybe it's a little too easy at times and once you've got the hang of the controls you'll soon be leading the pack, even on the hardest difficulty setting. I would've liked some in-game music too, although that said, driving games have a track record of very bad soundtracks, so perhaps it's best the developer chose to omit any music.

If you've got the need for speed, you'll find that GTS World Racing more than satisfies your rubber-burning desires.

Scatto 1.1 - Knock your opponent's pieces off the screen

I love trying out new sports and I'm always excited to see what wacky events will be added to the Olympics. I'm pretty sure Scatto won't be making an appearance in Beijing this year, but that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to.

In fact, the game reminds me a little bit of that famous winter sport of Curling, where you need to push a disc down the ice to knock your opponents pieces out of the way. The difference here is that both players' pieces appear in a straight line across the board with one row above the other. The object is to thrust one of your discs towards the opponent's row and try to knock their pieces off the board. Conversely they must do the same to you. Each time you win a 'set' your row of pieces edges closer to your oppontent's end, making it more difficult for them.

You move the pieces by tapping the stylus on one side, a process that's slightly cumbersome at first but proves fairly easy to pick up with a couple of practice games under your belt. The ball movement is a little slow though, and the game often takes a while to refresh when the computer is thinking about its move.

It's good fun though and there are plenty of game options to keep you interested, including five difficulty levels, changeable gameboard backgrounds, and a 'master class' mode, where you can practice playing your way out of sticky situations.

If you're looking for an innovative new game to play on the bus then Scatto is a good choice.

3D Mini-Dogfight 2.00 - World War II flying game for your PDA

There are plenty of World War II games available for Windows, but very few of them make it onto the small screen (i.e. a mobile device).

3D Mini-Dogfight is a graphically-rich air combat simulation for Windows Mobile, which handles very well for a mobile game. The animation is smooth enough and there are some cool sound effects and background music to keep your pulse racing as you play. There are even cool video replays so you can see what happened to you after the game.

In the full version get to choose to fly in one of four planes taken from the different armies of WWII, namely the Supermarine Spitfire, Yakovlev Yak-9, Messerschmitt BF109G, and the P51 Mustang. In the trial version only the Spitfire is available. You can also choose from five different kinds of terrain and four difficulty levels.

The game controls are easy to master and you can use the touchscreen or the directional buttons to guide your craft through the sky. The gameplay itself is fun - but only up to a point. This is because there isn't really a structured story to 3D Mini-Dogfight. There are no missions or campaigns to compete in, and no objectives to achieve. You simply fly through the the air shooting things down.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way 3D Mini-Dogfight plays, it's just that its lack of structure makes it a little one dimensional.

Kung-Fu Fighting 1.0 - Rescue your girlfriend in this martial arts fighting game

If you fancy yourself as the next Bruce Lee then you can now put your skills to the test while you're sat on the bus, thanks to this Windows Mobile game.

The plot outline is the same as virtually every Kung-Fu movie I've ever seen - your girlfriend has been kidnapped by an evil family, who just so happen to be experts in hand-to-hand combat. Your mission is to rescue the girl using the wisdom passed onto by your late Kung-Fu master.

If the story sounds unoriginal then just wait until you play the game. It really is like going back in time to 1992 and heading to the nearest arcade. Your little Kung-Fu man must keep walking right, defeating all the other little Kung-Fu men that come his way. It seems that under the tuition of his late Sensei your character has learned an impressive array of two moves - a punch and a kick, which makes this game somewhat annoying.

Sure, the graphics are OK, but with just two pathetic moves to choose from it's kind of a waste of the motion capture technology that the developer of Kung-Fu Master has employed. The sound too is pretty crummy and at times it sounds more like a squabble between two toddlers than a serious martial arts game.

There are lots of bonus levels, special weapons and end-bosses that help to add a bit of variety to Kung-Fu Master, but in terms of its gameplay, this one becomes boring pretty quickly.

Red Sector 2112 1.3 - Blood, guts and aliens on your Pocket PC

First-person shooters in the style of classics like Quake or Halo aren't developed for Pocket PC that often, so naturally when I hear about one that's been exclusively designed for the Windows Mobile platform, I get a little bit excited.

Red Sector 2112 sees you assume the role of a half-man-half-machine Terminator-style character who must save the human population of Mars (Earth is a no-go area these days, by the way) from alien invaders from a far-off galaxy. OK, so the back story isn't exactly a work of genius, but they rarely are in this type of game and it makes a change from the Martians attacking us Earthlings on our own planet. As always, what's really important is the excuse it gives you to blast the living daylights out of aliens, zombies, mutants, cyborgs, etc.

Graphically, Red Sector 2112 is one of the most accomplished first-person 3D shooters you'll find on the Windows Mobile platform. I was surprised by the level of detail in the scenery and the explosion effects are impressive too. The electric guitar-based soundtrack is atmospheric enough without ever really being ground-breaking.

You'll need plenty of processor power in order to get the best from this game (at the very least a 400MHz processor with 10Mb of program memory), although there are a series of options to scale-down the graphics settings, available from the main menu if you find it's really laboring.

The gameplay itself is quite exciting once you get into the game. The action starts a fairly slow pace at first and you'll walk around for ages not really getting much action. I guess this is done to help you learn the largely touchscreen-based controls, though personally I think they are fairly easy to master anyway. As you progress through the levels though you'll encounter all manner of baddies and there are plenty of puzzles for you to solve.

If you're a fan of first-person-shooters and find it hard to drag yourself away from your games console, Red Sector 2112 provides some captivating blasting fun to take with you anywhere.

Krystaloids 1.0.04 - Blast baddies and boulders in this arcade classic

If you're a fan of old-school space shooters then get set for a high octane blast from the past on your Pocket PC handset.

Krystaloids is a modern reworking of the time-honored format, which delivers all the fun of the original in a superbly-packaged game environment. In terms of the way it looks and sounds, it's more the kind of blaster you'd find in the arcades rather than the sort you'd play at home on your Commodore 64. The sprites are well rendered and smoothly animated and the celestial backgrounds are simply out-of-this-world.

The game itself plays much like asteroids. You need to traverse space in your rocket avoiding meteors and blasting any baddies or debris that hurtles your way. The control system is pretty easy to get used to and you just need to spin your craft in the direction you want to go then hit the accelerator. Along the way you'll get the chance to scoop up power-ups in order to improve your weaponry or defense systems.

In terms of game options, Krystaloids isn't terribly exciting. There's only one difficulty level and no two player mode. That said, you can change the sound and music volume, choose between five languages and toggle the in-game map on and off.

The full version of the game represents an epic challenge and will see you through plenty of bus or train journeys. However, the developer has been particularly mean with this trial version and you only get to play one level with one life and a maximum of three minutes game time.

If you're willing to upgrade to the full version though, Krystaloids represents an accomplished 21st Century reworking of a 20th Century classic.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the game of Space Invaders was born and dropped to Earth to satisfy gamers everywhere for years. The game mutated over time though and has now spawned many copies that have invaded scores of devices.

Distant Galaxies is only a distant cousin of Space Invaders and is probably related to Galaxian somewhere along the line too. With breeding like this it's difficult to fail, and Distant Galaxies proves that the old alien blasting format still has a place in the 21st Century.

It may not be rich with 3D graphics, cool explosion effects, or a thumping techno soundtrack, but neither were its predecessors and they didn't do badly did they? What you get here is a fast-paced shooter with more aliens and obstacles than you can shake a lightbsaber at.

There are some tough final bosses to contendwith, but you can pick up loads of cool power-ups along the way to help you conquer them. What's more, the introduction of an online Hall of Fame only serves to make you stay on Distant Galaxies even longer in an effort to become World champion.

The in-game controls are simple enough and can be customized to whatever keys you choose, although you may need to get your magnifying glass out to do so, because the menu text is ultra small.

If you're up for a bit of no-nonsense retro arcade fun, Distant Galaxies is the perfect download.

Frosty Factory 1.0 - Klax clone with a frozen twist

Working in a factory is normally a mind-numbing and turgid affair. Not when you work in the Frosty Factory though, where there's never a dull moment.

Of course, it's not a real factory, but rather a mobile game in the style of the classic Klax arcade puzzler. Instead of arranging tiles though, it's colored ice cubes (which look remarkably like tiles) that you must deal with. As they fall down from the conveyor belt you must catch them on your paddle before dropping them into piles in the tubes below. As soon as you have three cubes of the same color in a column, row, or diagonally, they disappear and you get succulent points.

Frosty Factory is pretty easy to pick up and play, especially if you've played Klax-style games before. If you haven't, then pay attention to the animated tutorial at the beginning, which explains what you need to do in a very clear manner.

The game itself is pretty addictive and once you've got used to the high speed of the conveyor belt and get the knack of stacking lots of cubes on your paddle at once before dropping them in the right place, you'll be hooked. Hooked that is, until the demo runs out on the second level. I'm all for developers releasing limited demos for people to try their products but the trial period for Frosty Factory is just far too short for my liking, and doesn't give you a chance to really sample how levels might vary in the game.

That said, Frosty Factory a polished game, with good use of music and sound effects and colorful, well-animated graphics.

A great time-waster, especially if you enjoyed games like Klax.

Rabbit Wars 1.0 - Battle it out for the last carrot!

In the famous words of the song, I often pose the question: "war, what is it good for?" In the case of Rabbit Wars, the answer is "carrots". For this game sees you command troops of bunnies in a quest to wrestle control of the food from your rival rodents.

The game follows the classic turn-based strategy format in which you need to learn the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent in order to choose the right tactics to win. There are lots of moves and weapons at your disposal from tanks and bazooka to hilarious 'Rambo' bunnies that run towards your opponent wielding machine guns.

Graphically, Rabbit Wars is very impressive, with vibrant colors, well-drawn sprites and amazing attention to detail, such as the way tanks make a slight backward motion after unleashing a shot. The backgrounds are great too and there's lots of variety in terms of the kind of terrain you encounter along the way.

The game controls are easy to master and you can more or less play the whole thing using only the directional button, without any fiddly keypad functions to worry about. The turn-based solo mode is good fun, and the computer opponent's AI means that you'll always need to stay on your toes.

Once you've honed your warfare skills you can fight it out with up to three other battles in the excellent multiplayer mode, linking up with pals via Bluetooth, Internet or LAN. Note, this option isn't available in the demo version, unfortunately. It's worth pointing out too that the game is pretty memory intensive and you'll need at least 5Mb for the installation at 8Mb to run rabbit Wars.

You'll never see rabbits in the same light again!

Marble Worlds 1.4 - Guide your ball through the marble worlds

I've loved playing marbles ever since I was a kid, and have progressed from rolling balls around in the street through to endless games of Screwball Scramble, to playing console classics such as Marble Madness.

Now my marbling career has taken another twist as I've taken the hobby to the road with the mobile game, Marble Worlds. The game is played in much the same way as Marble Madness in that you need to roll your little ball around a labyrinth of different obstacles in order to pick up the gems and score points.

Along the way you find a bevy of different traps, teleporters, ramps, blow holes , trampolines and the like, which can either aid or hamper your quest. The 3D graphics are delightfully drawn and the ball animation is smooth and realistic. The overall presentation is enhanced further by the inclusion of cool sound effects such as twittering birds and almighty explosions.

Although it's fun to play it can be pretty tricky too, and your ball control will need to be very precise as the movement is very sensitive. In fact, at times I was tempted to stop playing for good such is the infuriating nature of the gameplay. Perhaps the inclusion of some difficulty levels would've helped this, but sadly options in general in this game are a little thin on the ground.

If you've got the persistence to master the art of ball rolling then Marble Worlds represents a fun, colorful challenge.

Volley Balley 1.62 - Play beach volley ball with some amusing characters

One of my favorite things to do when summer comes round is to head down the beach for a spot of volleyball. And, before you ask, no I don't just do it to watch girls falling about in their bikinis.

Now you can recreate this fun summer sport on your mobile device thanks to Volley Balley, an amusing volleyball game with cartoon graphics. The main protagonists in this one are a couple of characters who look a bit like those guys off the M&M adverts. Your aim is to take control of one of them and hit the ball over the net without it being returned to your side, in order to win points.

The graphics in this one are nice and colorful. The 3D characters are well rendered and the animation is generally good (look out for their little victory dances), and the background image makes you feel like you're really at the beach in the sunshine.

Volley Balley offers a wide range of game options. You can choose which side of the net to play, select from five difficulty levels and alter the number of points needed to win a match. The game also keeps a record of all your stats and there's an online multiplayer mode to pit your wits against other players from around the World.

For all its bells and whistles though, Volley Balley doesn't find a way to alleviate the repetitive nature of the gameplay, and if you're anything like me you'll soon tire of the process of looping a ball up and down a small court with only a limited number of moves at your disposal.

That said, this is a well-presented volleyball game with lots of options that's ideal to take down the beach if no one wants to play the real thing with you.

...They live not far from your house. Just over the fence from the last cottage on your street there's a dump... Not a romantic place, dear Sirs and Madams, but that's where they live. Recently these creatures have decided to organize their own Olympics to let the world hear of them.

We don't know why but javelin-throwing seems to become rats favorite sport. Are you ready to reincarnate in one of them and master your throwing skills?

Greedy Penguins - Guide your penguin across the icy platforms

There's nothing in this world as determined as a hungry penguin, as this platform jumping game proves.

The object of Greedy Penguins is to guide your little penguin down a series of platforms as the screen scrolls upwards. This isn't as easy as it sounds, especially when you remember that penguins can't fly.

You can choose one of four different penguins (Daniel, Bonnie, Justin and Doud) who you must then guide down a series of levels, gobbling fish and collecting coins along the way. Not all the platforms are safe to stand on - some have spikes on them, some fall away when you stand on them and others send you shooting back up in the air. All this serves to make it a tricky and, at times frustrating quest, which will take you ages to master.

There aren't much in the way of options - there's only one difficulty level and you can't even enter your own name in the high scores chart (it just records the name of your penguin) so it's hard to keep track of scores if lots of you are playing the game. One neat thing though is the online multiplayer mode, where you can hook up with other penguin pushers over the Internet and challenge them.

The graphics aren't that tasty but if you're hungry for a challenge that Greedy Penguins will certainly satisfy your appetite.</>

Platypus 1.00 - Pilot your trusty Platypus and save peaceful Mungola

Being a big fan of the Wallace and Gromit series of films, I've always dreamed of living in a world made of clay. Now my dreams have been realized thanks to Platypus.

You assume the role of an orange flying craft that must save the country of Mungola by blasting the evil enemy invaders out of the sky. Essentially, it's a side-scrolling shooter but with one difference - everything is made from clay.

The graphics in Platypus are like none you'll have seen before. Because all of the elements were actually made from clay and digital captured, it makes for some truly stunning viewing. The animation is pretty slick too, and the splatting explosion effects are some of the best I've seen anywhere. The high-octane sound effects are impressive too and really help to set your pulse racing.

While the visuals are innovative and unique, unfortunately the gameplay is much the same as your average shooter, and after a while the process of blasting everything that slides across the screen becomes somewhat mundane. There is some stuff to collect and a few power-ups to improve your ship, which adds a little more life to this game.

In terms of options, you can adjust the sound and music volume, rotate the screen, and view high scores, but there's no facility for setting your own game controls.

You'll be blown away by the graphics but once the novelty of this has worn off you'll realize that Platypus plays like any other run-of-the-mill arcade shooter.
