With so much of our work and home activities based around our PC, it often feels that you're chained to the desk 24/7. Sometimes even while you're out and about you're probably itching to get home and check your emails or finish that Word document. Thanks to Remote Desktop for Mobiles you don't have to worry because the program lets you access your Windows desktop from wherever you are.

Basically, RDM + Remote Desktop can activate a new channel of communication between the two systems. In this way, you can interact with the Windows desktop, from your phone, starting or stopping services, viewing system resources, restarting or shutting down the machine remotely, among other possibilities.

To enable the connection, the program uses a BES meeting, BIS, TCP / IP or http. It supports password access, includes a system of encryption to protect transfers and has a number of options for rapid mapping functions on the keys of your device.

This software doesn't give you access to all the apps on your computer but ultimately, if you want to control the basic functions of your PC from your phone, RDM + Remote Desktop is a sound choice.

Mobispine is a mobile media browser which gives you the news you like from your favourite sources. The amount of news and blogs being updated everyday increases all the time. Mobispine tries to help users to find what's important from the sea of information out there and gives you what you need to read it. Mobispine is intelligent enough to learn what you like and will help you keep up with your interests.

This sounds great! What does it cost?

Mobispine is 100 % free of charge to download and to use from our side. However, your operator might charge you a small fee for the data traffic according to your data plan. We have optimized the service in order to consume as little data as possible and some of our benchmarks tell us that Mobispine is 20 times cheaper than other mobile browsers and/or RSS alternatives.

Mobispine is the cheapest way of accessing Internet-based services on your mobile. We minimize your Internet costs by using RSS-feeds, i.e. web sites with re-occurring updates.

Your friends' blogs, news and entertainment are good examples of this. On our start page you can find more feeds that may be of interest to you.

Tiny Twitter 1.85 (SP) - Use Twitter on your Smartphone

If you can't get enough of Twitter and want to keep tweeting even when you're not at a computer, then give Tiny Twitter a try.

Tiny Twitter allows you to check your Twitter feeds and send tweets from your Windows Mobile device. Ultimately, it represents a much cheaper way of spreading the word from your mobile than using Twitter's SMS-sending function.

Using Tiny Twitter is a straightforward affair for anyone who has used the Twitter service before. Once you've signed into your account, you're presented with a list of the latest updates from the feeds you're subscribed to. Adding your own updates is simply a matter of clicking 'Tweet' and tapping in your message. Tiny Twitter lets you know how many characters you've got left as you type. Like the full Twitter, the app allows you to insert photos, taken from your camera phone into your message. You can even enter your precise location automatically by harnessing your device's GPS capabilities.

Although there are some useful interface customization tweaks and synchronization options in its settings menu, Tiny Twitter is still very much a stripped-back version of the Web service, and many of the profile management and people-finding tools of Twitter aren't included.

Nevertheless if you're keen to keep up with updates and spread the word about what you're doing every second of the day, then Tiny Twitter represents a handy mobile solution.

fring 3.35 Beta - Free mobile VoIP software

fring offers a mobile solution to making cheaper calls based on the comforts enjoyed by lovers of VoIP services such as Skype and text messengers like Google Talk and MSN. It enables users to make cheap mobile internet calls, transfer all contacts from internet messenger services and engage in multiple conversations simultaneously (which I must admit was too difficult and pointless for me. If I talk to someone I don't want them talking to someone else at the same time.). All your PC-based contacts can be merged into one long list which is very useful and 'presence status' lets you know when they are available.

Of course, the most important detail is the pricing. fring is free software which is great news and offers significantly cheaper calls than normal mobile rates. Check the website for details but from what I can see, local and international calls are free using WiFi connections, and very, very cheap for 3G and GPRS callers and to send an SMS. That all sounds very good to me. While PC-based solutions offer a completely free package, if you need to look for a mobile-alternative then fring appears to be leading the way.

YehBA* Instant Messenger 1.0.6 - Chat with your IM buddies from your phone

Mobile instant messaging applications are quickly beginning to seem like Sudoku games: lots of them around and they’re all more or less the same. That said, they remain very popular and useful programs which are often at the forefront of the convergence trend just beginning to sweep the mobile communications industry.

YehBA* Instant Messenger is one of the new kids on the mobile IM block. It’s a well designed, compact option for those who want a chat program compatible with their phone yet without any of the extra bells and whistles now common in other clients. Its interface is original, if a little cutesy, and we found it adequately easy to use.

Setting up YehBA* was as simple as we’ve ever seen on a mobile IM program. The program has a built in ‘wizard’ which checks all your connection settings prior to launching the service. This is a run-once feature and it sets up your account with YehBA* as well as leading you through the account setup process for your MSN and/or Yahoo IM accounts – all with a cute cartoon of a wizard in the background. Nice.

Once up and running, there’s not much to choose from between YehBA* and the majority of its competitors in the IM market. Your options are simple: add or remove chat accounts, check your contacts list, communicate with buddies. The methods for communication extend beyond simple chatting, with ‘Call’ and ‘SMS’ included as options, However, seeing as these features don’t seem to have been implemented properly yet, we couldn’t gauge their eventual functionality. We figured that none of our contacts had the proper information entered into their MSN profiles but still… a little guidance would have been handy.

This is one of the areas where YehBA* starts to fall short of other clients we’ve tried in the past couple of months: its level of built-in help and advice is pretty low and it barely seems to offer support for features it boldly claims to offer. For example, setting a Google Talk account is supported by YehBA*. However, to realise this, you’ve got to know that Google Talk is based on Jabber and you’ll need to check Google’s homepage for the correct server settings to get your chat up and running – not something you’ll be able to do if you’re already out and about.

In some ways, this omission is understandable – there are, after all, a multitude of chat services out there and YehBA* can’t offer automatic setup for all of them. However, there are also plenty of chat clients out there that do offer a quick setup process for Google Talk – so why should we choose YehBA* over them?

The answer is that if all we’re looking for is a simple way to chat with MSN or Yahoo buddies while away from a computer, this is a perfectly robust option. You can communicate with your contacts or send them pictures from your phone – and that’s about it. Other much-lauded features, such as ‘blogging’ and chat rooms seemed potentially popular but essentially useless. We should also add that the program crashed once – not a particularly rare occurrence for a mobile application but annoying nonetheless.

YehBA* Instant Messenger is, on balance, a mostly stable and reliable IM program with good support for its basic features and not much else. If all you’re looking for is a way to chat with buddies from MSN or Yahoo! Messenger then this program is a perfectly decent choice. If, however, you’re looking for a program which offers advanced features, VoIP calls, or any other more advanced features, YehBA* isn’t the program for you.

iSkoot 1.1 - The Windows Mobile Skype client that really works

Skype is great for making free or cheaper calls from your computer. But what if you're out and about and want to speak to your Skype contacts on the move? Then you need iSkoot.

iSkoot is a free program that puts Skype on your Smartphone. As a result, you can make calls to people, chat via IM and even receive Skype calls to your mobile. You can also use iSkoot to make cheaper international calls using the SkypeOut service.

Setting up iSkoot is a painless procedure. You just need to select your model, download the installer and enter your Skype ID and password once the client is installed (you can create a new account if you need to). Your Skype contacts are automatically displayed and you can start calling right away by clicking on the name. Anyone familiar with Skype will be able to pick it up straight away, but there is a handy online help section if you need some assistance.

Call quality in iSkoot is generally excellent, and data connection speeds aren't really an issue, due to the way the system works. iSkoot basically connects you to a server which is in turn connected to the voice network via a regular mobile call. The only problem with this method is that it means you may get hit with long distance call charges, since you don't know what the number will be until the iSkoot server makes the call. The upshot of this is that if you're using your phone abroad you could end up racking up a large bill calling home as you will get hit with roaming charges. For making Skype calls in your own country though, the service is great as you bypass the need to pay call charges.

Provided you're only using it close to home, iSkoot offers a great way to chat cheaply on your mobile.
