PBA Bowling 1.0.5 SP - Go bowling on your Smartphone

For most of us, bowling is just something to do on a Saturday night when there's nothing good on TV, but for the guys in the PBA it's literally a way of life.

This game sees you come against real players from the Professional Bowler's Association as you fight it out on your mobile to be crowned king of the pins. It's a pretty good effort at a bowling sim for Windows Mobile, and is one of the most realistic you'll find on the platform.

The control system used in PBA Bowling is a lot more natural than you'll find in most bowling games. You simply need to line up your ball using the directional buttons, choose your trajectory, then stop the curved power bar in the right place. If your mobile has a camera on board, you can even use the motion sensor support to bowl down the lane like you would on a Wii.

In terms of its presentation, PBA Bowling is second to none. The 3D in-game graphics are excellent and the sound effects are so realistic that you'll think you're actually at a bowling alley. What's more, there are so many different game modes (tournament, multiplayer, Spare Challenge, single game), bowlers, locations and balls to choose from that it'll be a long time before you get bored of this one.

The only really annoying thing I found with PBA Bowling is that you can't skip through your computer opponent's turn, meaning you need to wait and watch each of its shots before you can take yours.

That minor point aside, this is probably the most polished bowling game you'll play on your Windows Mobile device.

Arcade Park for WM Smartphone 1.5 - Revive the legendary games of the past

I used to love those bundles of games you could buy for Spectrum, C64, Amiga, etc., where you could pick up four or five classics in the same pack for about 5 bucks. I once even had a Game Boy cartridge with 150 games on it. Arcade Park is a similar affair, this time offering eight top games from yesterday on one download.

The package includes Arcade Ball, Asteroids, Rushman, Digger, Gold Hunter, Galaxy Invaders, Real Tanx and Riverside Assault. You can read detailed descriptions of each of them in the developer's description below, but let me tell you now that each of them is a real classic, and most have been enhanced from theire original form by the introduction of crisp new graphics.

All of the games feature some kind of options for changing game modes, or playing around with the difficulty settings, though disappointly, there's a lack of two-player offerings. As always with these games, there are lots of bonuses and different types of enemies to keep things varied. You also get a hall of fame and records chart for the challenge of getting your name up in lights.

If you remember these retro game from back in the day, or even if you don't, Arcade Park makes for an interesting diversion.

Arkanoi3D 1.0 - Arkanoid with a 3D twist

Arkanoid (or Breakout as you may know it) games are ten a penny on mobile devices, but Arkanoi3D offers an interesting new twist on the format.

Arkanoi3D boasts the same ball bouncing action as the original, only this time you must destroy the blocks in a 3D environment. The graphics are pretty impressive, with brightly colored, semi-transparent blocks and a blue glass paddle. I particularly liked the way that if you miss the ball as it flies towards you, the screen 'shatters' with an accompanying sound effect.

Playing Arkanoi3D is mightily strange and first and it takes a long time to get used to the movement of the ball and judge how far in front of you it is in order to position the paddle in the right place. Once you've got the hang of it though, Arkanoi3D proves very addictive and it's difficult to put down.

There's enough in Arkanoi3D to keep you coming back time and again. It boasts 17 varied levels and a wealth of different power-ups to collect, which change the shape of the paddle or alter the ball movement in some way. Games can be customized from the options menu by changing the speed of the ball, speed of the paddle, and toggling the ball helper on and off.

If you're a fan of Arkanoid games, Arkanoi3D will introduce you to a whole new way of playing the game.

Lawn darts has always been a fun summer game but now you can play it all year on your mobile. And best of all you can simulate throwing darts using your camera.

You can choose to play classic lawn darts aiming for different coloured rings for points or crown darts where you really have to hone your throwing skills. Your selection of darts ranges from normal to magnetic, laser and bomb. Pick from a strange array of players, including soccermoms and an octopus, and even play on different planets.

Platypus 1.00 - Pilot your trusty Platypus and save peaceful Mungola

Being a big fan of the Wallace and Gromit series of films, I've always dreamed of living in a world made of clay. Now my dreams have been realized thanks to Platypus.

You assume the role of an orange flying craft that must save the country of Mungola by blasting the evil enemy invaders out of the sky. Essentially, it's a side-scrolling shooter but with one difference - everything is made from clay.

The graphics in Platypus are like none you'll have seen before. Because all of the elements were actually made from clay and digital captured, it makes for some truly stunning viewing. The animation is pretty slick too, and the splatting explosion effects are some of the best I've seen anywhere. The high-octane sound effects are impressive too and really help to set your pulse racing.

While the visuals in Platypus are innovative and unique, unfortunately the gameplay is much the same as your average shooter, and after a while the process of blasting everything that slides across the screen becomes somewhat mundane. There is some stuff to collect and a few power-ups to improve your ship, which adds a little more life to this game.

In terms of options, you can adjust the sound and music volume, rotate the screen, and view high scores, but there's no facility for setting your own game controls.

You'll be blown away by the graphics but once the novelty of this has worn off you'll realize that Platypus plays like any other run-of-the-mill arcade shooter.

The early nineties were something of a boom-time for platform games. Titles like Wonderboy, Alex Kidd and Nicky Boom all featured heroic boys on a quest to save their world.

Nicky Boom, a popular hit on the Amiga back in 1993, has now been ported to mobile devices, and recreates the magic of the original very well. The outline of the story is that Nicky's grandfather has been captured by the evil witch Zoldrane, who wants to steal his secrets. Nicky Boom must get to his granddad by traversing a series of perilous levels, conquering all the various creatures that Zoldrane has turned into her dastardly army.

Nicky Boom proves to be a really fun platform romp that brings the memories of those childhood days spent smashing snails and beating up beetles flooding back. Just like the original, the mobile version of Nicky Boom offers huge worlds to explore, secret areas to unlock, and power-ups and weapons to collect along the way.

The graphics in Nicky Boom are pretty good, although I was a bit disappointed by the rendering of the main character. Due to the way the sprite is drawn he's often difficult to spot against red or orange backgrounds, which can become annoying. The backgrounds are nice though and there's a diverse array of imaginative baddies to battle along the way.

There's plenty of fun to be had with Nicky Boom, and it's pretty in-depth for a mobile title.

3D Owen's Monster Truck 1.1 - Race monster trucks on your Smartphone

As a kid I used to dream that one day I would drive a monster truck. Little did I know that one day I would be able to do it using nothing but my mobile, thanks to 3D Owen's Monster Truck.

In 3D Owen's Monster Truck you take the role of Owen, or one of his three racing-mad pals and must battle it out against each other on the track. The good thing about being in a monster truck is that you can roll over small obstacles, and in 3D Owen's Monster Truck you get to use a series of weapons and power-ups to help you knock your opponents off course or put them off.

The overall presentation of 3D Owen's Monster Truck is generally very good. The sound effects and music are ace, and the graphics are pretty detailed with smooth animation. There are some occasional glitches with the collision detection but not enough to put you off your play.

3D Owen's Monster Truck is great fun to play and reminded me of Mario Kart in a lot of ways. It's easy to control and comes with an auto-accelerate option that lets you concentrate all your efforts on steering, laying traps, and blasting your rivals with weapons.

With five different courses and five characters to choose from 3D Owen's Monster Truck has plenty of variety, although it would've been nice to see some more game modes included in there, such as a Mario Kart-style battle mode.

Overall though, 3D Owen's Monster Truck is a great way to experience the thrill of driving a high-powered motorized beast.

Monster Tennis 1.0.0 - Play tennis against monsters

I'm sure you've played many tennis games before, but I bet never you've never tried one with monsters in it.

Monster Tennis is a spooky version of the popular sport, which sounds like an interesting concept on paper, but playing the game turns out to be a bit of a nightmare. The first thing you'll notice when you load up Monster Tennis is the horrific music. The plinky-plonky ditty is so dreadful that I had to reach for the 'Sound Off' setting within a couple of minutes of play.

The graphics aren't quite so bad, some of the characters in Monster Tennis are quite funny and original, although all are poorly animated. What's more, the collision detection leaves a lot to be desired.

In terms of its gameplay, Monster Tennis is amusing for a little while and hitting the ball over the net while avoiding missiles thrown by the monsters represents a good challenge. having said that, in general I found the whole Monster Tennis experience very slow and clunky.

I'll give Monster Tennis some credit for its originality but this one certainly isn't the next Virtua Tennis.

Ducati 3D Extreme 1.0.27 - Experience the thrill of riding a Ducati

Many of us dream of owning a Ducati motorbike but for most the closest we can get to the thrill of hurtling along on one is to play games like 3D Ducati Extreme.

This racer for Java-enabled mobile phones, sees you take to the roads on a monster bike. Ducati 3D Extreme takes place over three different locations in Italy, each with three or four different game modes, including Time Attack, Race, Race Line and Eliminator. All of these are great fun to play and a choice of characters, modifications, and unlockable power-ups make Ducati 3D Extreme on that you'll want to keep coming back to.

The only problem is that this level of variety doesn't extend to the bikes themselves. As you might expect from a game called Ducati 3D Extreme, you can only choose from Ducati bikes, and although there are a few to pick from, I would've liked to have seen other manufacturers represented.

In terms of its graphics and overall presentation, Ducati 3D Extreme looks great. The bikes are well-rendered and true-to-life, while the animation is fast and smooth. Music and sound effects are well used and not too annoying.

If you want to get an idea of what it feels like to ride a powerful motorbike, Ducati 3D Extreme provides you with a way to do so from your phone.

GTS World Racing 1.00.02 - Go racing on your Smartphone

Like many a young boy, I used to dream of one day becoming a famous racing driver. Little did I know that one day I could achieve my goal while sat on the bus.

GTS World Racing is a smart driving game for your Smartphone. In terms of its presentation, this is one of the best you'll find on the platform. The 3D graphics are very impressive, especially the backgrounds, and the sound effects are pretty realistic too. In terms of its animation, GTS World Racing handles very well and you get a real sense that your driving a car, unlike those games where it just seems like the background is scrolling above a static vehicle.

The diversity of GTS World Racing is great too. There are 64 different track layouts spread across 16 locations worldwide (only two of which, Finland and Peru, are available in this demo). There are three different kinds of car to pick from, and four game modes to keep things interesting.

One of my favorite things about the way GTS World Racing plays is the Cruise Control feature, which kicks in when you reach top speed and allows you to maintain the same velocity without keeping your finger on the button. On the subject of buttons, GTS World Racing's controls are fully customizable so you can tailor it to the easiest way for you to drive.

There's not much to fault with GTS World Racing, except for maybe it's a little too easy at times and once you've got the hang of the controls you'll soon be leading the pack, even on the hardest difficulty setting. I would've liked some in-game music too, although that said, driving games have a track record of very bad soundtracks, so perhaps it's best the developer chose to omit any music.

If you've got the need for speed, you'll find that GTS World Racing more than satisfies your rubber-burning desires.

Super Mario Planet - Play Mario Bros. on your mobile phone

After his countless outings on Nintendo consoles down the years, the world's most famous plumber now comes to your mobile phone.

Super Mario Planet is not strictly a copy of a previous version but rather an official reworking of the game for Java-enabled phones. Your quest, as ever, is to guide the moustached hero through a series of colorful levels, avoiding the various beasties and critters along the way. As you progress you can pick up power-ups to make you bigger, invincible, more powerful, etc. You can even hop aboard Mario's pet Yoshi if you find a green egg.

If you've never played before, don't worry because Super Mario Planet comes with a helpful animated tutorial to start you going. From there you begin your quest through several weird and wonderful levels, choosing from two difficulty settings. Super Mario Planet's controls are easy enough to pick up and basically rely on the directional pad or number keys on your mobile phone.

Super Mario Planet is cutesy and colorful, and the standard of the graphics is similar to the SNES version of the game. The menu ditties are pleasant enough, although for some reason there was no in-game sound when I tested the game.

It's perhaps not as polished in terms of its presentation as the official releases, but Super Mario Planet is still a great mobile platformer.

3D Mini-Dogfight 2.00 - World War II flying game for your phone

There are plenty of World War II games available for Windows, but very few of them make it onto the small screen (i.e. a mobile device).

3D Mini-Dogfight is a graphically-rich air combat simulation for Windows Mobile, which handles very well for a mobile game. The animation is smooth enough and there are some cool sound effects and background music to keep your pulse racing as you play. There are even cool video replays so you can see what happened to you after the game.

In the full version get to choose to fly in one of four planes taken from the different armies of WWII, namely the Supermarine Spitfire, Yakovlev Yak-9, Messerschmitt BF109G, and the P51 Mustang. In the trial version only the Spitfire is available. You can also choose from five different kinds of terrain and four difficulty levels.

The game controls are easy to master and you can use the touchscreen or the directional buttons to guide your craft through the sky. The gameplay itself is fun - but only up to a point. This is because there isn't really a structured story to 3D Mini-Dogfight. There are no missions or campaigns to compete in, and no objectives to achieve. You simply fly through the the air shooting things down.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way 3D Mini-Dogfight plays, it's just that its lack of structure makes it a little one dimensional.

Distant Galaxies 1.9 - Space Invaders with more baddies

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the game of Space Invaders was born and dropped to Earth to satisfy gamers everywhere for years. The game mutated over time though and has now spawned many copies that have invaded scores of devices.

Distant Galaxies is only a distant cousin of Space Invaders and is probably related to Galaxian somewhere along the line too. With breeding like this it's difficult to fail, and Distant Galaxies proves that the old alien blasting format still has a place in the 21st Century.

It may not be rich with 3D graphics, cool explosion effects, or a thumping techno soundtrack, but neither were its predecessors and they didn't do badly did they? What you get here is a fast-paced shooter with more aliens and obstacles than you can shake a lightbsaber at.

There are some tough final bosses to contendwith, but you can pick up loads of cool power-ups along the way to help you conquer them. What's more, the introduction of an online Hall of Fame only serves to make you stay on Distant Galaxies even longer in an effort to become World champion.

The in-game controls are simple enough and can be customized to whatever keys you choose, although you may need to get your magnifying glass out to do so, because the menu text is ultra small.

If you're up for a bit of no-nonsense retro arcade fun, Distant Galaxies is the perfect download.

Kung-Fu Fighting 1.0 - Rescue your girlfriend in this martial arts fighting game

If you fancy yourself as the next Bruce Lee then you can now put your skills to the test while you're sat on the bus, thanks to this Windows Mobile game.

The plot outline is the same as virtually every Kung-Fu movie I've ever seen - your girlfriend has been kidnapped by an evil family, who just so happen to be experts in hand-to-hand combat. Your mission is to rescue the girl using the wisdom passed onto by your late Kung-Fu master.

If the story sounds unoriginal then just wait until you play the game. It really is like going back in time to 1992 and heading to the nearest arcade. Your little Kung-Fu man must keep walking right, defeating all the other little Kung-Fu men that come his way. It seems that under the tuition of his late Sensei your character has learned an impressive array of two moves - a punch and a kick, which makes this game somewhat annoying.

Sure, the graphics are OK, but with just two pathetic moves to choose from it's kind of a waste of the motion capture technology that the developer of Kung-Fu Master has employed. The sound too is pretty crummy and at times it sounds more like a squabble between two toddlers than a serious martial arts game.

There are lots of bonus levels, special weapons and end-bosses that help to add a bit of variety to Kung-Fu Master, but in terms of its gameplay, this one becomes boring pretty quickly.

Al Kharafa (S60 2nd y 3rd) - Catch the fruit in your basket

Personally I'm not a big fan of eating dates, so if a load of them were falling off a tree I'd probably just leave them on the ground. Not this Omani girl though, she loves the stuff.

The object of this very simple game is to catch the falling fruit in her basket to score points. Make sure you only collect the red dates as you will lose a life if you nab a yellow one. You also lose a life if you drop a red one, and have a total of four lives to play with.

The control system is perhaps the easiest you'll find and you can just move left or right using the keys on your phone. Collecting a red date will earn you a point and there is an online high scores table where you can judge yourself against other Al Kharafa players.

Ultimately, this game is very basic in all its elements. The graphics are very plain, animation is woeful, and the backgrounds do not vary. There are no difficulty settings or various levels to negotiate so the game quickly becomes tedious.

Al Kharafa is fun to play for a few minutes, but the novelty wears off pretty quickly.

Firby 2 - Cutesy platformer for your phone

If you're a fan of ultra cute platformers like the New Zealand Stories then you might want to check out Firby 2.

This mobile game sees you assume the role of a little blob who must navigate different worlds, solving puzzles, collecting things and avoiding any bad creatures that may come his way. The platform-leaping format is highly unoriginal and yet highly playable at the same time.

If the gameplay doesn't mesmerize you then the bright, colorful graphics and hypnotic soundtrack certainly will. Don't get me wrong, the graphics aren't jaw-droppingly stunning or anything, it's just that I found them very imaginative. There are a wide range of weird and wonderful creatures out to get you, and the backdrops are very dreamy.

Ultimately, Firby isn't much of a challenge for hardcore mobile gamers and it doesn't take long to get acquainted with the controls. Once you have, you should be able to complete the 24 levels of the full version of the game in a couple of hours.

Despite being a bit easy for experienced platform gamers, Firby 2 still offers a fun way to escape from the real world for a while.

Krystaloids 1.0.2 (S60 3rd) - Classic alien-blasting fun on your phone

If you're a fan of old-school space shooters then get set for a high octane blast from the past on your phone.

Krystaloids is a modern reworking of the time-honored format, which delivers all the fun of the original in a superbly-packaged game environment. In terms of the way it looks and sounds, it's more the kind of blaster you'd find in the arcades rather than the sort you'd play at home on your Commodore 64. The sprites are well rendered and smoothly animated and the celestial backgrounds are simply out-of-this-world.

The game itself plays much like asteroids. You need to traverse space in your rocket avoiding meteors and blasting any baddies or debris that hurtles your way. The control system is pretty easy to get used to and you just need to spin your craft in the direction you want to go then hit the accelerator. Along the way you'll get the chance to scoop up power-ups in order to improve your weaponry or defense systems.

In terms of game options, Krystaloids isn't terribly exciting. There's only one difficulty level and no two player mode. That said, you can change the sound and music volume, choose between five languages and toggle the in-game map on and off.

The full version of the game represents an epic challenge and will see you through plenty of bus or train journeys. However, the developer has been particularly mean with this trial version and you only get to play one level with one life and a maximum of three minutes game time.

If you're willing to upgrade to the full version though, Krystaloids represents an accomplished 21st Century reworking of a 20th Century classic.

Xedious is a Clone of the classic coin-op arcade game Xevious. The maps and graphics were adapted from the xbat game for Unix. Xedious contains 16 levels and three difficulty settings. Help for controls is included in the game (wait a few seconds in the title screen for the instructions to appear). The game doesn't include any sound.
