Brain Games for SmartPhone 2.10 - Train your brain on your Smartphone

Brain training games are all the rage these days, and Resco Brain Games brings an accomplished take on the format to Windows Mobile devices.

Brain Games is designed to help you improve your mental capabilities by following a course of different tests and puzzles. There are 36 in all, which test challenge your skills in mathematics, memory and analysis. Each of the 36 brain games are broken down into ten separate tests of rising difficulty, and you can't progress to the next difficulty level until you've finished the previous test.

You're awarded stars out of five depending on how many questions you get right and how quickly you finish the brain games. A glamorous teacher is on-hand to award you your points, or simply to give you instructions on what to do.

The control system is Resco Brain Games has been very well designed and makes for intuitive use via the direction pad. The layout of the answer buttons means you have no excuse for being slow to answer, as they're incredibly simple to access.

There's no doubt that the tests in Brain Games are great for boosting your brain power, and as I could clearly see from the comprehensive statistics section, I found myself steadily improving over time. My only slight qualm would be that the games aren't diverse enough. Perhaps some word puzzles or reflex-testing games would've made Brain Games a more well-rounded app.

Nevertheless, Resco Brain Games is without doubt one of the best Smartphone brain trainers around.

PBA Bowling 1.0.8 - Go bowling on your Blackberry

For most of us, bowling is just something to do on a Saturday night when there's nothing good on TV, but for the guys in the PBA it's literally a way of life.

This game sees you come against real players from the Professional Bowler's Association as you fight it out on your mobile to be crowned king of the pins. PBA Bowling is a pretty good effort at a bowling sim for Blackberry, and is one of the most realistic you'll find on the platform.

The control system used in PBA Bowling is a lot more natural than you'll find in most bowling games. You simply need to line up your ball using the directional buttons, choose your trajectory, then stop the curved power bar in the right place. If your mobile has a camera on board, you can even use the motion sensor support to bowl down the lane like you would on a Wii.

In terms of its presentation, PBA Bowling is second to none. The 3D in-game graphics are excellent and the sound effects are so realistic that you'll think you're actually at a bowling alley. What's more, there are so many different game modes (tournament, multi-player, Spare Challenge, single game), bowlers, locations and balls to choose from that it'll be a long time before you get bored of this one.

The only really annoying thing I found with PBA Bowling is that you can't skip through your computer opponent's turn, meaning you need to wait and watch each of its shots before you can take yours.

That minor point aside, PBA Bowling is probably the most polished bowling game you'll play on your Blackberry.

mGomoku - Angels and devils collide at tic-tac-toe

One of the problems I've always had with tic-tac-toe (or naughts and crosses as you may know it) is that the games are either over quickly or they end up in a draw.

mGomoku changes all that, adding a more in-depth spin on the classic game, where instead of joining three naughts or crosses in a row, you need to make a line of five.

Games in mGomoku are played on a large board with lots of very small squares. You simple need to tap any free square and your character (the angel or the devil) will throw their piece into that square. This in itself can be a tricky process unless your careful, as you can often end up selecting the wrong square and blowing your chances.

mGomoku is great fun to play and mightily difficult to defeat. There are six levels of difficulty to choose from, but I found even the easiest took a lot of patience to become good at. One good thing is that all your performances are recorded automatically in the stats section, meaning you can keep track of your progress.

Apart from the bizarre sound effects the only thing I disapproved of in mGomoku was the tragic omission of a multi-player mode. A game as fun and strategic as this is always best enjoyed when battling it out against a friend.

As a one-player game though, mGomoku will certainly keep you amused for some time.

Eggstreme - Yolks Revenge 1.0 - Crack this egg-themed puzzle game

They say you should never play with your food, but in the case of Eggstreme - Yolks Revenge I guess you could make an exception.

The game sees you try to score points by matching up Easter and egg-themed images in order to create rows or columns of two or more. Among these cute little pictures are rabbits, chicks, flowers, and, of course, eggs.

Eggstreme - Yolks Revenge is based around a very simple concept and is equally simple to control using your keypad. Like most games of its nature, it's highly addictive and makes for an amusing diversion for a while.

Unfortunately, Eggstreme - Yolks Revenge simply doesn't have enough depth. The graphics are rather bland and don't vary much, and there are no extra difficulty levels or different game modes to keep the thrill of playing alive for too long.

It's certainly worth having a crack at it, but ultimately, Eggstreme - Yolks Revenge isn't particularly egg-citing. Sorry.

Big Box of Blox 1.01 (SP) - Block stacking fun taken to outrageous extremes!

There are dozens of Tetris clones available for mobile devices, but Big Box of Blox is certainly not one of the more conventional ones.

The object of Big Box of Blox is fairly standard - arrange the three-block-high stacks as the fall to match blocks in groups of three or more, vertically or horizontally to eliminate them. The difference to your run-of-the-mill Tetris game though lies in the way Big Box of Blox is packaged, which I would simply describe as "surreal".

The graphics in Big Box of Blox are dark, mysterious and downright bizarre. Over the course of the five different game modes, the styling of the levels varies from Hells Angel, through alien, to futuristic. Couple this with a spooky ambient soundtrack and Big Box of Blox represents one of the most sinister puzzle experiences you'll ever download.

A game of this nature is always going to be addictive and fun to play, and Big Box of Blox proves no different. It avoids being repetitive by presenting different game modes that feature different block attributes. One level contains bomb blocks that blast surrounding blocks away when joined together, another features a slot-machine style combo where an event happens for better or worse depending on the spin of a wheel, and a third sees you try to blocks that spring up like mushrooms as you play. You can adjust the difficulty of the gameplay within Big Box of Blox very precisely through a slider on the main menu.

Big Box of Blox is let down somewhat by the design of the blocks themselves. Because many of the pieces are very dark in color, they are sometimes hard to spot against the black backgrounds of the levels, and I came away from the game with a touch of eye strain.

But if you're looking for something different to the usual Tetris-style games, Big Box of Blox delivers an experience you won't find anywhere else.

Master Kick 1.4.1 - Exciting table soccer game

Here at Softonic we like nothing more than a game of table-soccer over a quiet drink at the beginning, middle and end of the day, by which time it's usually got quite aggressive and no-one is talking to anyone anymore. Then we leave for the night ready to do the same thing again the next day. Oh how I longed for a day when I could enjoy the fun of table-soccer without having to play with my colleagues. Well, imagine my excitement when I found Master Kick.

This is a bright, fast and very loud version of table-soccer. The graphics, shot from a birds-eye view or blimp for those of you who know about FA Cup final day, are superb and the controls are surprisingly simple to get the hang of. However, I did find it difficult to score and even more challenging to win. Choose a 4-3-3 formation or 3-4-3, 4-3-3 for me always, and watch out for the changeable weather. There are different pitches and even screaming fans. It's a great game this notwithstanding the terribly loud football rave music.

Crazy Daisy 1.10 - Spin the flowers to join the petals

Normally my macho image would prevent me from playing games based around joining flower petals together. However, once I tried out Crazy Daisy I found it quite difficult to put down.

The object of Crazy Daisy is to spin the seven flowers around in order to join up matching-colored petals. When a connection of petals of the same color is made the petals then pop away and you reap the benefits of a whole bunch of points.

It's a very simple game to control and yet Crazy Daisy is remarkably absorbing. The process of spinning the flowers puts you into a kind-of dreamlike state where you don't really have to think about what you're doing - just watch the petals fall off the flowers and listen to the cute noises they make. There are three game modes to try in Crazy Daisy, and you can export your high scores to share with friends.

For this reason Crazy Daisy is a good time-waster, however, perhaps the more hardcore gamers will be put off by its overly-cute graphics and sounds and the repetitive nature of the gameplay.

Still, Crazy Daisy represents a good way to kill some time on a long bus journey.

Snow Rally Canada 1.1 - Explore Canada in this fast-paced rally game

If you're a fan of classic console touring games like Sega Rally or Colin McCrae Rally then you may be interested in installing Snow Rally Canada on your mobile.

Set across eight different areas of Canada with distinctly different terrain, this game provides a remarkably realistic driving experience on the small screen. The 3D graphics and animation are exceptional, the audio soundtrack is lively and in-keeping with the high octane action. You even get video replays of your races to show you how you did.

You get a choice of eight different rally cars, and while they're not officially licensed (i.e. 'real' models) vehicles, each has its own unique characteristics, meaning that some are better at handling, while others are more suited to high acceleration or very fast top speeds.

While the presentation of the game is first class, Snow Rally Canada suffers somewhat in terms of its controls. The directional buttons on your mobile are used to turn left and right as well as for accelerating and braking. Sounds simple in theory, but I found them to be overly sensitive and the fact that the car auto-accelerates means that you'll need a lot of practice just to stay on the track. I managed to spend a whole circuit time exploring the flora and fauna of Canada , barely touching the road at all - and not deliberately!

However, if you're a big fan of rally games and have the patience to master the fiddly controls, Snow Rally Canada represents a fast and well-presented mobile experience.

Lost in the Pyramid 1.3 - Old-style comedy adventure game

Once upon a time computer games didn't have the luxury of fancy graphics to make them appealing to users. Instead, they had to rely a lot more on imagination and original ideas to entice gamers. I remember loads of text-based adventure games that had me gripped for longer than many of today's lavish productions.

Lost in the Pyramid recaptures the magic of those classics in the form of an imaginative quest in which you star as Indiana Bones, a famous archeologist who has a dream one night about a pyramid. After waking up, you must go to consult a psychic who reveals where to start your mission, then it's off into the wild unknown to explore the mythical building of your dreams.

Along the way you'll need to make decisions based on the information presented to you on screen and your responses determine whether you score points and progress to the next stage, lose points, or even lose one of your five lives. The control system is akin to most text-based adventure games, where you need to respond to a statement (e.g. 'Open the door?', 'Go to Africa?', 'Pay the psychic?') by clicking Yes or No (or 'What' to repeat the question).

The responses to your answers can be hilarious at times and this makes the Lost in the Pyramid great fun to play. Some of the put-downs and one-liners delivered by the computer are worthy of a Chris Rock stand-up show. Despite its humorous nature, progressing through the levels in no laughing matter, and some of the puzzles will take you quite some time to complete.

Graphically, the game isn't anyway near as bad as those famous text-based games of old on on the Commodore or Spectrum. There are colorful cartoon pictures along the way that illustrate what is happening, although I felt there could have been more of these, as some stay on the screen for a long time.

Overall though, Lost in the Pyramid is really good fun, and is a big enough adventure to keep you captivated for ages.

Skinz Sudoku Professional 1.30 - Innovative version of the popular numbers game

It's quite incredible how quickly Sudoku has become one of the most popular puzzle games on the planet. It seems that whenever you get on a bus, train or plane, you're guaranteed to see at least one person gazing at a block of numbers looking quizzical with a pen in their mouth.

The problem I have with Sudoku is that I find it gets very repetitive very quickly and I often end up putting down my puzzle book after just a couple of games. Skinz Sudoku breathes new life into the format of the game, with innovative gameplay that will keep you glued to your Smartphone's screen.

Like a normal game of Sudoku, you must fill the board with numbers from one to nine without repeating them in the same row, column or square. However, Skinz Sudoku offers four different ways of playing to add a little diversity to the proceedings.

The first is 'Wheel', where you pick a number from a number wheel that appears around the tile you selected. Then there's 'Square' which is essentially the same thing only with a simpler layout. 'Bar' is particularly interesting, as you first select the number you want to plot before touching the grid to put it anywhere. The final one is 'Writing' where you simply type in the number you want to include.

The game allows for the creation of new boards, the ability to change the appearance of the environment, save and load games, all without using the pointer. Though the game offers some fun ways of inputting numbers, the puzzle itself is essentially still the same, so if you're not into Sudoku then don't bother.

However, if you're an affectionado then Skinz Sudoku will add a more more variety to the way you play the game.

Crazysoft Paintball II UIQ 3.0.1.1 - Top quality ball-based mobile game

ayed paintball once and nearly lost a thumb so, for me, a version where it's impossible to get hurt is something I'd love to see. Unfortunately Crazysoft Paintball isn't an exact copy of the barbaric shooting-people-in-a-field game, but it does involve paint. And balls.

The goal of this puzzle game is to join three or more balls of the same colour and ensure they are next to a pipe. Once in place, you select them then splat them with paint using the action key. The balls will then change colour and get sucked into the pipe, leaving more space on the board for you to make your next batch.

It's an interesting twist on an over-done gaming concept, and as you master the combos and pump up the points, it becomes more and more addictive. What's more, the longevity of the game is extended by the inclusion of five different game modes.

Besides the normal challenge, you also get a Hard mode, where the paint reserve dips very quickly; Panic mode, where you have 100 seconds to score as many points as you can; Heat mode, where ball groups are taken only when they are next to a 'hot' (red) pipe; and the mind-boggling Chroma mode, where you have to use different colour combinations rather than balls of the same colour.

With the addition of multi-player mode via Bluetooth, Crazysoft Paintball will have you swapping paint for points for quite some time.

I played paintball once and nearly lost a thumb so, for me, a version where it's impossible to get hurt is something I'd love to see.

Shift 1.06 - Eliminate squares using the touchscreen

I love a good puzzle game to keep me occupied on a long bus or train journey, but I'm fed up of all the Tetris or Sudoku clones that keep springing up on mobile platforms.

Shift makes for a refreshing break on Windows Mobile, with some innovative gameplay that will keep you hooked for ages. The game consists of a series of coloured blocks with faces on that you must match together in groups of three or more to clear them. The difference between this and games like Tetris is that all the blocks move as one big lump.

Shift makes full use of the touchscreen, allowing you to tap any of the four directional arrows to move the blocks in that way. I'll admit that, at first, it tried my patience somewhat, and I thought I'd never score more than a few points. With a bit of persistence though I was able to rack up combos and hit some seriously good scores (even if I do say so myself!) After that it would take a meteor (or, in reality, the fact I had to write a review about it) to get me off this one.

It can become somewhat repetitive but the inclusion of two difficulty levels and a high scores table adds to the longevity of Shift. You can also choose to show or hide the next bricks to test yourself even further.

This is an innovative puzzle game with colourful graphics that's perfect for those tedious bus journies. Just be careful you don't miss your stop!

Advanced Brain Trainer - Deluxe Version 1.1 (SP) - Improve your brain power

Let's face it, whoever came up with the Brain Training series of games probably doesn't need to play them themselves. Judging by the mammoth success of the series, they already have plenty of brain cells up there.

The great thing about Advanced Brain Training is that it's not just a gimmick. I've tried them before and been pleasantly surprised with the improvements in my powers of recall and ability to solve logic puzzles. Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe is designed to provide the ultimate workout for your mind, allowing you to carry it around with you everywhere on your mobile device.

The game consists of a series of modules designed to boost your brain power over time. Each module is broken down into exercises that test different mental abilities. For instance, the first module included in this demo version includes three different tests based around memory, logic and mathematics, all of them executed in the form of fun challenges with nice visuals.

The first task is to memorize shopping items and their prices. These items then pass along a checkout and after that you must try to remember how many of each item was bought and what the total cost was. This is a lot trickier than you might imagine (well, for me at least). Then it's on to the logic element, where you need to remember two shapes before working out which of the four patterns they've been made to create. Finally, it's on to a quick-fire addition and multiplication test.

The great thing about Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe is the way the puzzles are presented. Rather than just setting a series of tasks that you need to scroll through, some thought has gone into the way your development is realized on screen. So, you get to choose from two coaches each with their own personality (Bill and Ann), who guide you through each of the modules, giving you advice and feedback on your performance. You can also track your progress over time through charts and graphs that appear whenever you complete a module.

While some of the tasks seem a little too tricky at the start, the beauty of the brain training format is that when you view your progress chart, you will, more often than not, see an upward trend, proving that you'd be a dummy not to give it a go.

Well-presented and fun to play, Advanced Brain Trainer Deluxe offers a pleasant way to expand your gray matter while you're sat on the bus.

Caisses 1.21 - Impressive free Sokoban game with 500 levels

If you've ever dreamed about working in a warehouse (and I know I have on many occasions), then the chances are you used to love playing Sokoban. Although, you probably didn't know it was called Sokoban, but it's the one where you have to push boxes in a straight line into a designated space.

Well, the game is still alive and kicking, and is widespread on mobile devices. Caisses is one of the more interesting clones I've come across though, and provides amazing depth considering it's a piece of freeware.

Your basic aim is the same old story - you're a warehouseman who must shuffle parcels around. You can only push the boxes in a straight line, and you can't push more than one box at a time. As a result, the gameplay is very addictive, but certainly not very original.

The best thing about Caisses is the fact that you can customise the game to the n-th degree. Not only can you choose from a bevy of cool backgrounds, but there are loads of game themes to choose from too. For instance, you can choose to play as Pac-Man, Zangeif, a nurse, or even the Linux penguin, and the objects you push will then change accordingly.

It gets pretty tough as you progress through the 500 levels, so it would've been nice to see some kind of hints feature, but the challenge of getting your head around the hundreds of puzzles is enough to keep you coming back for more.

Great looking and infinitely customisable, I challenge you to find a better Sokoban clone for Windows Mobile.

Snow Lines 1.1 - Put a smile on your face with this wintery puzzler

I've never been a big fan of the winter and the cold weather normally induces the outbreak of a giant frown across my forehead.

The freezy season seems to have had the same effect on the colored faces featured in Snow Lines too. Luckily though, you can turn their frowns upside down simply by joining them up in lines with other faces of the same color, to make them smile. I say 'simply' but in actual fact this game turns out to be a lot trickier than it sounds.

You can connect matching colored faces together in lines that run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, so there are plenty of options. Unfortunately for you, what starts off as a grid with just a few faces on quickly becomes a frenzy of freezing frowns as more and more of the little critters pop up in squares at random across the game board. What's more, you can only move a face if it isn't blocked by other faces, which quickly becomes the case, especially in the later levels.

Although it represents a serious challenge of your vision and dexterity, I'm happy to say that Snow Lines is great fun to play. There are several different game modes (Arcade Game, Progress Game, Timed, etc.) and loads of levels to get through.

The colorful graphics are cute and lively and the sound is simply excellent. Normally I become annoyed with the repetitive ditties that loop in the background of these kind of puzzle games, but the dreamy tunes in Snow Lines made me want to keep the sound turned on. The SFX too are pretty funny, and the cries of joy that leap out of the creatures when you join them up make you all warm and fuzzy inside.

The only thing I felt Snow Lines lacked is a little more variety. It would've been nice to have some different power-ups to collect or more diversity in terms of the game backgrounds.

Nevertheless, if you want cheering up on a glum day, Snow Lines provides a great remedy.
