VR+ 2.4.9 - Record, playback & e-mail voice memo

VR+ offers a simple and efficient interface to quickly record and send voicemail to your contacts. This may be of good use if you want to get your point over, and simply don't want to waste time talking to your contact. VR+ has simple playback features that can be executed without needing to dig into the menu.

The program records in MP3, which should give you good enough quality, however it will also depend on your device and the amount of noise in your surroundings. Your voicemail can be sent as a message or as a URL to your contacts.

We were impressed with all the little helpful details in the application. Pop up tips appear every now and then, and you can even choose the amount of memory you allocate to your recordings. These can be organized in categories or by date.

In all, a simple and streamlined solution to record and send voicemail to your contacts with ease.

Nokia DJ Mixer 1.0 (Nokia NSeries) - Mix music on your mobile phone

MP3 players in mobile phones isn't such a new thing anymore, but not many devices can boast an on-board DJ mixing desk. Not, that it, unless you've got Nokia DJ Mixer installed.

Nokia DJ Mixer allows you to record songs and remix them with other tracks to get creative with your music. It's just a case of clicking 'New Playlist' and loading up the tracks you wish to mix, up to nine tracks.

Although the mixing desk in Nokia DJ Mixer is a long way from the all-singing, all-dancing PC solutions, it's still great fun to play with. You simply need to queue up the tracks and move the fader to start mixing. It's so easy that anyone can do it.

Another aspect of Nokia DJ Mixer is its Karaoke section, which also provides lots of laughs. You can load up your own Karaoke audio files or use the samples included in Nokia DJ Mixer then hit record and sing into your phone. The resulting vocal masterpiece can then be played back and stored on your phone.

Overall, Nokia DJ Mixer makes for a fun new way to enjoy digital music on your phone.

Mixx Mobile 1.5 (SP) - Create your own mobile ringtones

Ringtone creation tools have come a long way since the days when you had to enter notes on your Nokia pad, before playing them back as a tinny melody. Mixx Mobile offers an advanced set of features for making sophisticated ringtones.

As soon as you start using the program you realize that Mixx Mobile is actually quite a powerful piece of kit. The best way to start is to launch the Mixx Mobile demo project, which demonstrates how each tune is broken down into up to six tracks, represented by waveforms displayed in timelines.

Once you start playing around with the tools in Mixx Mobile the capabilities of what you can do with the app become clear. You can zoom into each track's waveform for precision audio editing, apply a series of customizable effects, record voice or music and use this in your creations and load MP3, Ogg and Wav files into Mixx Mobile.

Once you've finished editing your mix in Mixx Mobile, it's easy to export it as a ringtone through the program's rendering function. The audio quality in Mixx Mobile is fantastic, especially in terms of the bass output, which is far more genuine than you'll find in many similar apps.

Perhaps the only thing letting Mixx Mobile down is it's rather clunky user interface. True, it looks OK and you can apply your own skins to the editor. But, without the inclusion of a toolbar or a back button, tweaking audio and applying changes becomes quite a fiddly process.

However, with a bit of patience it's possible to produce some truly classic compositions using Mixx Mobile.

4Pockets Auto Tuner is real-time chromatic instrument tuner for your PC and Pocket PC. The tuner can accurately determine the frequency, musical note and octave of any input signal without the need to pre-select target notes or strings.

Auto Tuner automatically calculates the nearest musical note to that being played on your instrument and accurately determines how many cents the note is away from the true frequency. Simply tune your instruments so that the actual frequency of the note being played matches that of the true calculated target frequency. This allows you to easily experiment with different tunings as it eliminates the need to pre-select note frequencies.

The program incorporates harmonic error correction technology and the ability to compensate for notes played in wrong octave, allowing you to tune using either open strings or harmonics.

TempoPerfect 1.02 - Keep time using your Smartphone

Practicing or producing music can be a difficult task if you don't have something to keep the beat, but now you can use your Windows Mobile device, thanks to TempoPerfect.

TempoPerfect is designed to help you stay in time by providing a clear and precise beat that can be easily adjusted to give you the correct beats per minute (bpm). You can set the bpm (from 40-280) using the arrow keys, or by entering the number yourself, and it is then shown in the digital display. When the beat is played, a flashing bar at the bottom of the interface lets you know its progress.

Unlike many basic metronomes, TempoPerfect also lets you set accented beasts and allows you to apply up to 8 subdivisions per beat. I also liked the inclusion Beat Tempo chart in TempoPerfect, as it means you can quickly check the technical definition for the time signature you're composing in (e.g. Allegro, Adagio, Largo, etc.)

TempoPerfect is one of the most comprehensive digital metronomes I've seen and it certainly beats the pants off using a mechanical device, which has the tendency to wind down. Perhaps the inclusion of a few virtual instruments or sample sound files would've made this a more complete piece of software though.

But if you're a practicing musician who needs something to keep time, TempoPerfect lets you do so with ease on your Smartphone.

Smart Piano - Play the piano on your mobile

If you fancy yourself as the next Elton John or Mozart then learning can be a costly experience. If you can't afford the expensive instruments themselves then perhaps you could try installing Smart Piano on your Windows Mobile Smartphone.

This free simple application allows you to play the piano simply by hitting the keys on your phone. Each button on your handset represents a different musical note, and these are outlined in the program's help section. As soon as you strike one of the buttons the note will play and it's position on the scale and on the piano keyboard will show on the graphical display.

Besides using the phone button to play notes, Smart Piano also includes four different chords (C Major, G Major, F Major and Middle C). These can be accessed using the directional buttons, and again the finger position will be shown in the main window.

Smart Piano proves to be very simple to use but likewise, it's also very simple in terms of its scope. For instance, there's only one piano octave available, and you can't create your own chords, so you're limited in terms of your creative scope.

As a simple tool for learning the piano though, Smart Piano is a fun little free app.

Little Snazzy Drummer 2008 Lite (SP) - Add a digital metronome to your phone

You might not realize it, but mobile phones can make for great musical accompaniments for any tracks you might be producing. I'm not talking about sampling ringtones here, but rather using your device as a digital drum machine.

Little Snazzy Drummer is designed to let you do just that, allowing you to build drum loops and play them through your device. Once you've installed the cab file you can start playing around with beats by clicking on the 'Edit' option. Here you'll find five different drum tracks which, when put together, will form your loop or be used as a metronome to keep you in time.

The drum tracks comprise of Bass, Snare, Closed hat, Open hat, and Rim shot. Each track in the sequence has its own timeline where you can set the intervals at which each will sound, simply by checking or unchecking the boxes that run across the track. The track plays while you're editing, allowing you to easily preview the changes live and tinker with each track to keep the beat. Unfortunately, you can't isolate individual tracks though.

Once you've finished your beat, you simply return to the 'Play' menu and it will loop continuously, accompanied by a picture of a little snazzy drummer (who looks more like a big grotesque monster, if you ask me). It would've been nice if this little guy was animated but I guess you can't have everything.

It may not be the most advanced music production tool in the World, bu Little Snazzy Drummer is a very cool app that will help you create drum beats without any technical knowledge.

I don't know about you, but I get fed up with the same old ringtones on my phone. Even when I download tones based on well-known tracks I still get irritated after three or four calls.

MusAic is designed to change all that, offering you a way to always ensure you have fresh new tones, while promoting your creativity at the same time. The program allows you to create polyphonic music in any genre using Artificial Intelligence algorithms.

Don't worry, you don't need to be Mozart in order to compose a beautiful ringtone in MusAic. In fact, you don't really need any musical knowledge because the system is largely automated. All you have to is choose a style of music and adjust the 'width' of it using the appropriate sliders, which will automatically generate an original polyphonic ringtone. You can then rate this ditty using another slider. Over time, as you create and rate different tunes, MusAic will start to learn the kind of music you like and will generate similar tones in future.

Once you get used to the rather clunky interface (which is skinable, incidentally), you'll find it pretty easy to start making tunes. You can even export them as MIDI files if you wish. The main problem I had with MusAic though is that it really doesn't feel like you're in control of what you're creating, because all your basically doing is adjusting a couple of slide bars and the software does the rest.

MusAic is fun and easy to use, but ultimately doesn't give you a great deal of creative input.

FlipSide 1.01 - iPhone-style MP3 player

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, in which case the guy who invented the iPhone must have the biggest head in the world by now. It seems that any new mobile MP3 player that comes out these days borrows something from the Apple creation.

FlipSide adopts the scrolling album cover approach, giving you the ability to quickly flick through your music collection in a highly visual manner. The installation process is painless enough and once launched, you'll notice immediately how streamlined and lightweight FlipSide is, as it quickly searches for and displays all the audio files it finds on your device or storage card.

It then displays the artwork for each album on there and you can skip effortlessly through each by hitting the left and right buttons. This will prompt the art to smoothly animate left or right. Don't worry if some of your music is lacking artwork, because you can add the album cover manually or search for it online at the click of a button.

Aside from the ubiquitous support for playlists, FlipSide lacks a little in terms of its options. You don't get any tools for sorting or categorizing your music, and there's no EQ or other fancy advanced playback options like cross-fading. Personally though, I'm willing to sacrifice the lack of options in exchange for a bloat-free application that runs quickly and is so wonderfully easy to use.

One of the best ways to experience the joys of the iPod touch MP3 player without actually buying one.

MikSoft Mobile AMR Converter 1.5.0 - Practical, quick audio converter for use with your mobile

The Mobile AMR converter uses Sony Ericsson AMR converter to convert AMR files (Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec, *.amr) to wave files (*.wav) and vice-versa in a user-friendly way. Also, you can directly convert MP3 to AMR files for use with your mobile. It can also save several wave files into one SP file and vice-versa.

The program has a very easy-to-use and simple GUI (Graphical User Interface) that helps even the most amateur user. Most of the times, the only data that you must enter are the input file(s) and the output file. The AMR format is used by many mobile phones right now, for sound recordings and for MMS (message with sound, picture and text for view in cell phones).

This program is a popular solution for converting your sound files to play on your mobile phone.
