Adobe Flash Lite 2.1 (S60 2nd FP3) - Access Flash content on your mobile phone

Whatever you think about Flash, there's no doubt that it's a very rich and immersive way of enjoying content on the Web.

Adobe Flash Lite equips your Symbian device with a player for Flash movies and animation in both frame and window mode. Via a familar file explorer, Flash Lite can access SWF data in both the internal memory and in external cards.

All of the common player functions such as Play, Stop, Pause, and Rewind are available from a menu at the side of the screen on your display.

Adobe Flash Lite provides you with ability to watch Flash movies without any additional software on your phone. My only criticism would be that the poor user interface could have been given a little more attention in order to make it a little more user-friendly.

If you want to enjoy the best of the Web on your phone, this really is a must-have download.

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be able to watch clips of Postman Pat on my mobile phone, but, praise-be to YouTube, now I can. vTap is designed to make it even easier to watch your favourite clips, allowing you to search, list and play video from a wide range of sources across the Internet.

Specifically, vTap can search for videos on YouTube, Dailymotion, Metacafe or Myspace, providing you with a preview all results in miniature, and enabling direct access to the categories of these websites, before displaying all the videos within the user environment.

The program, which delivers very quick search results (depending on your connection, of course), can also be used to search Wikipedia entries, making it an indispensable tool for film and TV buffs.

While the range of video sites it references isn't complete as yet, vTap offers an effective way of searching and viewing moving pictures on your phone.

cCam 1.0.3 - The bird watcher's dream

I used to be a young ornothologist which I hope I've spelt correctly. I got a badge and a bird book and used to attend meetings every Friday afternoon at my school. I was quite young but I can still point out a buzzard from a kite. In those days people didn't have mobile phones - I'm serious, so we never had any nasty scares of ringtones and flashing cameras frightening our feathered friends away. However, there's a new piece of software that means you can own a mobile phone and bird watch at the same time.

cCam is a 'camera capture program' that works by switching off the flash and shutter sound effects of your mobile's camera so you can nature watch and take photographs without destroying the peaceful atmosphere. It's a nice idea that needs further testing as it doesn't run smoothly on all supported devices at the moment. But don't let that stop you from trying it. Happy snapping.

Media Map 1.1 (SP) - An alternative way of viewing saved multimedia

I'm not sure about you, but I have loads of audio and video files lurking on my phone but they're in a bit of a jumbled mess. As a result, it can sometimes be difficult to find something I want to watch or listen to. Media Map is designed to change all that, providing you with an innovative way of accessing multimedia files, by displaying a graphical list of all the contents stored in your memory.

The software is based around a system of searches with predefined fields and keywords, meaning that to locate a file you only need select a field or a keyword. For instance, if you want to find all the podcasts stored on your handset you only need to select 'General', then 'Podcast' as a keyword. Media Map will then automatically display all of these files on screen.

The program, which supports all memory cards, lets you assign new keywords in each default section and allows you to create playlists based on search results. There's even a function for hooking up to a media server via Wi-Fi, if you have the right capabilities.

With a tag cloud-style interface, Media Map represents a quick way of accessing media files in an innovative user environment.

Nokia Multimedia Player 1.1 - Plays sounds and 3GP videos, view images or MMS messages!

Over the last couple of years, manufacturers and networks have been putting more and more pressure on consumers to use their phones for more than just calls and SMS. Perhaps a natural result of this drive is that phone manufacturers have also been producing proprietary applications for viewing and manipulating multimedia files received or created on your phone.

Multimedia Player is the snappily titled offering from mobile phone top-dog, Nokia. Billed as a “powerful application” for viewing, playing and managing content sent to your phone or from a phone to your computer, Nokia Multimedia Player sets out to be a one-stop-shop for all your mobile multimedia needs. Unfortunately, it’s a badly designed and poorly executed product which has never really been up to the standard of mainstream audio and video players.

After installing Multimedia Player (and suffering the inexplicable Windows restart which always accompanies a Nokia program installation), we were disappointed with an ugly, glitchy and clunky program interface. Nokia have created custom window decorations for the program, and sadly they’re of a very low standard. Compared with other media players (iTunes, RealPlayer and even Windows Media Player), Nokia’s design is remarkably poor. Its ugly, ‘jaggy’ elements are a real let down from the company responsible for designing some classic mobile phones.

When it comes to functions, there are some basics for media players which a software developer has to get right. Fast-forward scanning while watching a video file is one feature which most users would demand from a video player. Nokia Multimedia Player does include this feature but it doesn’t work on videos created with Nokia phones, surely the key media which the player would be aimed at. Interestingly, Apple’s iTunes supports these videos and allows the user to scan through a video while it’s playing.

The quality of video and audio playback in Nokia Multimedia Player is also disappointing. Comparing the playback of several video files with other media players, we noticed significant degradation in the quality of the video as well as a flat, dull sound quality. Some file formats we tested the program with wouldn’t even open, despite Multimedia Player claiming that they were supported. The only format we found which Nokia Multimedia Player supports better than other programs is the MMS multimedia message format used between to send pictures and short videos between phones or from a phone to a computer. This feature is particularly useful if you’ve received lots of MMS messages and want to archive them on your computer.

To be fair to Nokia, this program is several years old now and at best, it's a very basic application for viewing multimedia messages you’ve received on your phone or computer. For the most part, however, it’s an ugly, ungainly and dysfunctional waste of disk space. Instead of this program, why not use Apple iTunes which is capable of handling practically all of the formats which Multimedia player claims to support.

Skreen Saver works just like the ordinary screen saver for series 60 devices. Each theme includes a colourful background, an animation, fonts and the following indicators: Date and time, Missed Calls,New Messages, Incoming Alarms

Skreen Saver activates after a specified inactivity timeout, just like the ordinary screen saver. It then deactivates after another inactivity period (which ranges from 30 mins to 2 hours max) restoring the default screen saver in order to save battery power for long inactivity periods.

Skreen saver can also be viewed at any time by keeping the # key pressed for 1 second. It then deactivates with any key press.
