Amazingly, I've never seen any of The Godfather movies but now at least I feel like I've seen them after installing Godfather Blackberry 8100.

One of the much vaunted features of Nokia’s Series 60 range of phones is the capability of personalising your handset with custom themes. Just as we’re now encouraged to ‘skin’ desktop applications such as WinAmp media player, so Nokia want us to develop a more personal attachment to our phones by choosing or even creating our own themes. Series 60 Theme Editor is Nokia’s own free tool for creating complete theme packages.

Theme Editor’s installation includes some atypical steps, so it’s important that you don’t rush through the installation. The most problematic step is selecting default editors for bitmaps, vectors and sound files. No guidance is given for this step, and no default editing programs were found on my test system. Without any assistance from the manual, this proved to be a major stumbling block in getting the program to function at all. I’d therefore recommend installing Adobe PhotoShop for Windows prior to attempting to install Theme Editor, as the install program should detect PhotoShop as a default bitmap and vector editor.

At the end of the installation, I was prompted to restart the computer now, or wait and do it myself later. I chose to wait, but the installer immediately started trying to close my computer down. I managed to stop it, but this was an annoying reminder of why you’re always warned to close all other applications before an installation: things can go wrong.

Once up and running, Theme Editor doesn’t really improve much. After a few minutes tinkering with the program’s interface, it becomes clear that this is not an application aimed at users with a basic to intermediate skill level. Creating themes is a time consuming, fiddly and perplexing chore – as is trying to find help in the program’s manual. This is a shame, because Theme Editor is graphically well designed and looks like it could be used to produce some stunning results, if only it weren’t aimed at developers only.

In all, Nokia Series 60 Theme Editor is a disappointingly complex tool really aimed only at developers.

If you're a bit of a motor-head then perhaps you should give the Carbone Theme a try.

Carbone Theme changes the styling of the home screen on your Windows Mobile Smartphone to mirror a sports car's dashboard. After installing both the Carbone theme file and the digital clock file, a new background will appear on your phone.

The main image consists of a large clock designed like a speedometer with three smaller dials at the side, giving you access to information such as new SMS messages and missed calls. The graphics themselves aren't rendered particularly well and the Carbone Theme does look distinctly like a home-made effort rather than a well-oiled machine.

However, if you like cars then the Carbone Theme is sure to please.

If you're a fan of tigers, dragons and Japanese symbols then YingYang LCD could be the download for you.

The theme features an image of a tiger and a dragon wrestling with a ying and yang symbol as the main background wallpaper. I'm not really sure what the symbolism of this is - to me it just looks like something someone would have tattooed on their back.

The tiger/dragon image in YingYang LCD is set against a black background with some gold bars running across it. Unfortunately, this background obscures some of the data on the home screen, such as network provider, messages, and application shortcuts.

YingYang LCD also tweaks some of the other Windows Mobile settings, altering the color scheme of the menus to a gray, red and white affair.

I couldn't decide if YingYang LCD was cool, or just a bit gaudy. Either way, it makes for a striking theme for your Smartphone.

If you're looking to brighten up your mobile a little then you might want to think about installing Abstract Love.

The Abstract Love theme transforms several aspects of the S60 interface to make it a better place to be. For starters, it adds a cool vector-based flower design as a background image to the main screen. The design itself looks great, but unfortunately it's watermarked and renders some of the black text unreadable.

Hop into the S60 menu system and you'll encounter a different background again. This time Abstract Love goes with a green, flowery background and applies some nice flower icons to the menu. Again, there are some issues with text readability, but on the whole the design is pretty striking.

The artwork within Abstract Love is very impressive, although the way the various elements hang together needs a little work.

Make no mistake about it XP was a classic operating system and one which should live long in the memory. But if you've been foolish enough to upgrade to Vista this XP theme will help you recall the good old days.

Although it's not a direct copy of the Windows interface, XP Theme recreates the styling of the OS in an interesting way. The focal point of the theme is the curious reworking of the XP logo, which appears as the background wallpaper. I'm not sure what the designer used to create it, but the colorful 3D-rendered boxes in the XP Theme look gorgeous.

What's more, XP Theme changes lots of other aspects of your Symbian interface, such as the menu icons, which are bright and colorful, and the addition of yellow menu text.

XP Theme binds all these interface elements together nicely to make a very attractive skin for your S60.

I'm a huge fan of the Mac OS so the opportunity to replicate it on my phone with this Mac theme was too good to turn out.

Unfortunately Mac Theme doesn't come anywhere near the native Apple operating system. The cool blue logo that replaces your background wallpaper is very nice and the clock skin has shades of Mac OS Classic about it but it stops there really.

The Symbian icons in the Mac Theme remain essentially unchanged and the blue text used on the menu options is quite difficult to read against the black background and ends up hurting your eyes somewhat.

Die-hard Apple fans may enjoy having this Mac theme installed, but ultimately it's nowhere near as visually appealing as OS X itself.

If you're feeling all hot under the collar as a result of the summer heat then this mobile theme will get you suitably refreshed again.

The skin features a cool blue background wallpaper with raindrops running down the display, which is so realistic you'll be reaching for a towel to wipe the screen. It also adds a stylish blue analog clock to the main screen.

The Raindrops Theme also changes some of your interface elements, adding a range of slick icons, as well as altering the menu color schemes.

As far as operating systems go, I would rank XP as one of the all-time classics. This XP Electric Theme celebrates Microsoft's now defunct OS with an interesting new twist on its logo.

While traditionally, the Windows XP branding conjured up images of fluffy clouds and bunnies jumping through rainbows, the XP Electric Theme gives the styling a darker, edgier feel. The main background wallpaper consists of a blackened image of the XP logo being shocked with electricity. It's a very striking picture, and one that allows text and logos to be viewed in front of it very clearly.

The black, blue and gray color scheme runs throughout the XP Electric Theme and the logos, clock and menu bars all match pretty well with each other.

XP may be getting a little old-hat now, but the XP Electric Theme injects fresh energy into the logo.

Although The Dark Knight movie has had mixed reviews, Batman remains one of our most loved superheroes. The Dark Knight Theme brings the caped crusader to your Smartphone.

Installing the Dark Knight Theme on your device takes a little fiddling around. You need to extract the 'Shadow' folder to your PC, sync your Smartphone then copy the files into the 'Home' folder under 'Application data'. Once this is done you're ready for the Dark Knight Theme.

This program packs a huge range of customisation options which give you control over background images, screensavers, menus, sounds, system dialog screens and much more. You can even preview your themes in a seperate window, showing all the different standby and menu screens at once.

Presented in a fairly smart interface, the program does take quite a long time to load. Once up and running, however, Sony Ericsson Themes Creator is clearly a powerful and professional-quality design tool. I was surprised to notice that when importing images to the program, it offered no options for resizing or cropping them. Apart from that, there were no problems while using the program and I found it to be a reliable, comprehensive method for creating stylish and original themes.

Sony Ericsson Themes Creator is a recommendable tool if you are the owner of a mobile device from the phones manufacturer.

The application allows you to customize everything in your Sony Ericsson mobile phone, from standby, to the app launcher, menu and calendar. Thanks to the tabbed interface you can quickly move between the different sections. The right side of the program shows the current theme and the left one is where you can make the changes, from selecting a new image to changing text.

We were a little disappointed to find out that you can only upload GIF files, however the program does allow you to change sounds like the alert for new emails, messages or calendar events.

Once you are happy with your changes, press preview to take a look at all the different screens with the changes. It's then just a case of updating the new theme to your Sony Ericsson phone.

I quite liked how you pick your Sony Ericsson model from a list of thumbnail images, unfortunately it doesn't seem the program allows you to update the device list, so you might not find the most recent models.

They say that a change is as good as a rest, and if you're getting bored of looking at the same interface on your mobile phone all the time then you may want to think about installing this theme.

No surprises for guessing the predominant colors of the Black & Blue theme, but there's more to this theme than a couple of shades. True, the color scheme does work well, and gives off a cool, slightly industrial aura. But, this theme also changes your icons, menu styles, fonts and analog homescreen clock.

On the whole, I like the design. The rounded Mac OS-like icons are gorgeous, the background is simple yet stylish and shiny clock is a nice addition. I wasn't sure about the use of Comic Sans as the system font though, and felt it wasn't quite in keeping with the rest of the design elements.

Nevertheless, Black & Blue theme provides a nice way of freshening up your phone's display.
