In fact, PIXresizer is the perfect app if you want to make very simple changes to your photos before posting, viewing or sending them online. For example, you can use the app to change the photo size (to presets or custom), alter the file format (BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF) and optimize for emailing and posting.

PIXresizer isn't very flashy, and apart from these functions - and a few other options you can enable, such as saving EXIF data - there's not much more you can use it for. That said, it's free and does its job very well, so if you often need to change the dimensions of your photos, it's a very handy tool to have lying around.

ToYcon lets you create icons by simply dragging and dropping images onto its box-shaped interface. The program supports all the popular graphic formats and converts them right to ICO as soon as you drop the file on its interface. The resulting icon is saved in the same folder as the original image with the same name, though you can set the program to ask for destination after each conversion.

Despite its simplicity, ToYcon is quite a handy tool with support for several sizes and color depths. It doesn't really have many configuration options but it's very easy to use and works fine. Plus it doesn't require installation, so you can simply unzip the archive wherever you want to save the program and you're ready to go.

ToYCon is probably the easiest and fastest way to generate icons from your image files.

With Spesoft Image Converter you can easily convert images from one format to another. The program supports an amazingly wide array of graphic formats, from the popular JPG, BMP and PNG to the more professional NEF, TIFF and TGA.

Format conversion is not the only service provided by Spesoft Image Converter, though. You will also be able to apply subtle retouches to the image's brightness , contrast and saturation values, as well as resize them according to pixel measurements or total percentages.

The good thing about Spesoft Image Converter is that it can work with single images or in batch mode, converting complete folders and subfolders of images. With Pixillion you won't waste two hours resizing pictures to send them by email or watermarking images to publish them on your blog. Converting, resizing and watermarking are probably the most boring tasks you can perform on your images. Unfortunately they're also fairly common tasks, so it's a good idea to download a program like Pixillion that can do the hard work for you.

Simply select the files or folders you want to work with and tweak Pixillion's settings according to your needs. You can select between more than a dozen formats to convert images, resize or crop them automatically, add text to them and also apply a watermark with transparency effects. When all these settings are properly configured, just click on the Convert button and they'll be all applied to the images at the same time.

The only drawback we found with Pixillion was the fact that if you select certain functions in the program (especially the Burn, Edit, Slideshow options in the top bar) it installs extra apps from the same developer. I don't mind getting new programs if they come from reliable sources; I just want it to be a little clearer what the program I've downloaded actually includes.

The interface in AVS Image Converter is really smooth and well designed. The features are tabbed with clear, easily comprehensible buttons underneath. The import window doubles as a viewer where you can preview your image edits, and the convert button is really neat. This cuts the conversion up into stages, from how many images you want, resizing, effects, watermark and finally conversion.

The conversion tab in AVS Image Converter allows you to choose a target format, from the eight major ones. There's JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PCX RAS and TGA, which will cover most people's needs. Resizing is also done here, and you can set your dimensions manually, or simply select from a list of popular image sizes. You can also rename your images when they are converted.

AVS Image Converter has an effect tab, where there are three auto settings, for brightness, contrast and levels. All of these, while simple, can improve the look of dull or poorly lit photos. There are also some deeper effects, like temperature, soft focus and sepia, all of which can be adjusted so you can get them just how you want.

AVS Image Converter also lets you add watermarks, of either text or image, to protect your pictures. This is the least developed part of AVS Image Converter, and is a disappointment in an otherwise well-made image conversion tool.

Photo converters always win points with me when they allow you to preview the final product before you convert and Contenta RAW Converter doesn't disappoint. Contenta RAW Converter reads all major RAW formats and gives you full previews before conversion, whether they are single files or batches. Although it doesn't support every digital camera out there, if you've got one of the major brands then you should be ok.

This app is actually very versatile. Apart from letting you convert images, it also allows you to share them, make them into a PDF album, perform some basic processing (brightness, denoising, boosting, etc.) and even a selection of effects and annotations, like watermarking, cropping and color tweaks. Contenta RAW Converter also lets you rename and organize your photos in sub-folders using EXIF, IPTC and XMP tags, which makes them much easier to organize.

Of course, the conversion and reduction of RAW files makes them much easier to save and send via email to friends and family. One handy extra offered by Contenta RAW Converter is a thumbnail generator that turns images into thumbnails, removes metadata and generally makes them much easier to publish on the net.

Batch Image Converter is very simple - just a single interface with drop down "advanced" section. You choose your destination file parameters - JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP or GIF - and one of Batch Image Converter's six size settings, including email and custom.

You can then drag and drop your photos into Batch Image Converter. The conversion takes place immediately, and you can view a log of the process if you want. Underneath the advanced options, you'll be able to specify where you want Batch Image Converter to save the new files - if you don't, they'll be mixed in with the originals.

Batch Image Converter is pretty simple, but for uncomplicated conversions, it's perfect.

Morz Image Converter is one of those tools. But don't expect an attractive interface or lots of tools and menus. Mors Image Converter is directly embedded into Windows Explorer, which means that once installed on your computer, you can convert any photo from its context menu in Windows.

Simply right click on any photo and select the "Convert image(s)" option. You'll be presented with a window where you can choose the target format and the quality. When you click on "Convert" the program will convert all the selected images and save them into the same folder.

Handy as it is, I missed having a few more options in Morz Image Converter, such as the ability to rename converted files or save them in a different folder from the source one.

With Morz Image Converter you can convert multiple photos from one format to another right in Windows Explorer.
