Mobile GMaps is a FREE application that displays Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps and MSN Virtual Earth (Windows Live Local) maps and satellite imagery on Java J2ME-enabled mobile phones, PDAs and other devices.

When you start the program, you will presented with a welcome screen. You can configure program settings at this point or start browsing the maps or satellite imagery. After you start browsing, your phone will connect to the internet. The presence of the connection is usually indicated on your display by a small "G" (standing for GPRS or EDGE) or "3G" icon.

When the connection is established, the phone will begin downloading the map or satellite tiles for the startup location, and will display them on the screen as they are downloaded. The default startup location shows the map for a part of the U.S. at zoom level 14 (fully zoomed-out).

WeatherBug Direct is a Windows Mobile add-on that provides you with live local weather information wherever you may be. This information is displayed on your Smartphone's home screen, outlining the forecast for today, tomorrow, and the next day. The data is presented in a very clear way with a weather icon, plus the temperature (only displayed in Fahrenheit, sadly) and the outlook.

Using WeatherBug Direct is pretty straightforward. You set up the application simply by entering the name and country of your location and selecting the nearest point to you from the list of local weather stations. There are more than 8,000 different WeatherBug Direct stations, so it's never that difficult to find one close to you. You can add as many different locations as you like, then set the 'Current location' to the place you're in now.

You can also use WeatherBug Direct to view current (well a few hours old at least) satellite images, weather cameras and radars. Note though, that the radar and camera image features don't always seem to be available, as it depends on your location.

In terms of its accuracy, WeatherBug Direct wasn't perfect in our tests. In fact, as I speak the program is telling me there's only a 32% chance of rain today. It's raining.

While it may not give pinpoint readings, WeatherBug Direct displays live forecasts in a very clear manner and boasts a few interesting features.

CellPos records the position of gsm cells automatically using a Bluetooth-capable GPS receiver. The program works automatically, tries to determine the center of each cell by storing the GPS position of the places with the highest signal strength value in that gsm cell. You can also name a cell, and this name will be displayed if you are in that cell even if the GPS is not connected.

By far my most favorite section, and the most unique of this particular guide is 'Madrid's Top Ten'. This contains a series of 'best lists' to help you prioritize the things you're going to see and do while you're in the city, from shopping, to sight-seeing, to night-clubbing.

The only thing I'd point out is that some of the prices listed for things like transport and food may become out of date fairly quickly, given the state of the economy today, but budgeting is really a concern you could always check online before you go.

If you want a well-written and refreshing guide to this wonderful Spanish city, the DK Eyewitness Top Ten guide makes for a useful mobile companion.

However, with so many gadgets and gizmos to carry around on trips these days it's best to avoid carrying around excess baggage like books and maps. Instead, why not install a travel guide on your Blackberry to save valuable pocket space?

This Palm guide to Prague is based around the popular Dorling Kidersley Top 10 series of guide books, and manages to pack in lots of information about the Czech city. What I like about it is that it doesn't just reel off the same old stuff about all the tourist attractions and instead presents things in a more interesting way. For instance, you get tips on the best times to visit places, and a huge series of top tens featuring everything from the top ten things to see in Wenceslas Square to the top ten Czech filmmakers.

You also get a whole raft of maps, including a street index, transport map and metro map. Be sure to check the transport prices when you get there though, as the info in the guide may be out of date.
