CellPos records the position of gsm cells automatically using a Bluetooth-capable GPS receiver. The program works automatically, tries to determine the center of each cell by storing the GPS position of the places with the highest signal strength value in that gsm cell. You can also name a cell, and this name will be displayed if you are in that cell even if the GPS is not connected.

With GPSMap, you can use your own maps to display your position, using a Bluetooth capable GPS receiver. To calibrate a map, you have to go to at least two different places on the map by foot, by car, by bus, etc., with the GPS device and your phone.

Both times, you have to locate your position on the map by selecting Options/View and calib. at the list of the maps. In this view, you can use the joystick to move the map in large steps, or press the ABC button or with the joystick to move smoothly. Press 'I am here' to record your positon (a red dot will show it on the map). After you have set at least two places, the red X mark at the list of the maps will transform into a green sign. You can calibrate a map on your PC with OziExplorer, as long as you know the coordinates of at least two points on the map.

Functions of GPSMap II:

• Displays location on a map or displays latitude/longitude
• Add, remove maps
• Calibrate maps manually or importing from OziExplorer
• Phone standby mode can be switched off
• GPS device identifier may be stored (no need to set it up)
• Connection to the GPS device is restored automatically

After calibrating a map, you can use it to display your position. Go to Options/Setup, and set Diplay to the name of the map, or set it to 'Automatic'. In automatic mode, always the map available for the current position will be displayed.

LocViewer loads map sections according to the current position from a Web service from the Internet and indicates the position on the display of the mobile phone. As data source e.g. road maps or satellite photos can be selected. In addition the speed and the moving direction are indicated. The map sections can be panned and zoomed.

In order to reduce data traffic, the map sections are stored in the mobile phone. So a map section must be downloaded only once.

POIAlert 1.5 - View points of interest near to you

It's always good to know what's going on around you, especially when you're in a place that's foreign to you. Thanks to the power of GPS it's now possible to discover what's nearby just by looking at your phone.

If you're lucky enough to have a GPS-enabled device then you'll know that it's already possible to create and download points of interest to make the most from your satellite capabilities. Thus, you can check whether there are nearby gas stations, restaurants or even speed cameras.

Until now, it's only really been possible to view this information on a map, but don't you reckon it would be easier if you could receive a visual warning or a voice alert to give you a clear indication of when that POI is in range? Especially for speed traps, I would imagine.

Wel, dream no more, because POI Alert has been designed to alert you to radar signals and speed limits. Even if you don't have GPS built into your phone, it's compatible with external GPS receivers connected via Bluetooth.

After a rather lengthly set-up process, the program performs very well and there are plenty of options to fiddle around with for setting the type of alert you want and adjust the distance notification in a speed-dependent way.

If you're fed up with getting caught out by hidden speed cameras and have GPS capabilities on your phone, POIAlert can help you out.

Nokia Location Tagger 1.0 beta 2 (S60 3rd) - Tag the location of your photos

It's really amazing what you can do with technology these days and there's constantly things that surprise me about how far we've come.

Take, for instance, the area of GPS communication and photography, where it's now possible to mark the exact location where a photography was taken using a satellite that's orbiting the Earth. Thanks to Nokia Location Tagger you can now do just this on your Nokia N95, N82 or E90 with built-in GPS module, or using a GPS receiver.

Essentially, the program allows you to add the exact GPS location to the EXIF data of a photo. Thus, every time you take a photo using your phone's camera, the software will 'tag' its GPS location, so that anyone can see the precise point you were in the World when it was taken.

This is useful if you're sharing your snaps on sites like Flickr or Picasa. What's more, if you use Google Earth, you can track where the photos were taken on a map, ideal if you like to travel around a lot.

The app is remarkably simple to set up using the software's built-in camera application. An icon is displayed to indicate that GPS is running in the background, and you simply press the camera button on your device as normal. It's pretty reliable, although you won't be able to mark GPS data using a secondary camera device.

Nokia Location Tagger is ideal if you want to remember exactly where you've been, or if you're showing off holiday photos on Flickr.

Wayviewer 3.2 - Free of charge GPS navigation for Java™ mobile phones

Wayviewer offers navigation in Europe and North America without fees, subsriptions, and on-line costs. The route must be computed before departure on a PC or a Notebook. For it a MAP&GUIDE derivate, e.g. ADAC TourPlaner®, or Microsoft® MapPoint® version 2002 and above is used.

Since MapPoint® provides the route plans without the GPS coordinates of the turn points, it was necessary to develope a special MapPoint® Add-in that determines the GPS coordinates and writes them together with the driving instructions into a file. This file is copied afterwards to the mobile phone.

When using MAP&GUIDE programs no Plug-in is required. The generated Palm DB files can be used directly without any modifications.

The Wayviewer application itself is used on the mobile phone. It was developed in Java™ based on the Micro Edition of the Java 2 Platform (J2ME™). At present the English, the German, and the French versions of MapPoint® are supported.

Wayviewer imports the route plans into an internal data base (RecordStore). There several route plans can be stored at the same time. At a time one route plan can be selected and step by step be displayed. The driving instructions are compressed by using Icons that a meaningful representation on the display of the mobile phone is possible.

The software steps the driving instructions automatically forward during approximation to the next turn point. Alternatively they can be stepped manually. In this case no GPS receiver is required. In the automatic case an appropriate voice output takes place, in order not to distract the driver. For a reasonable use of the voice output, a hands-free speaking system or a headset are recommended.

I used to love taking part in treasure hunts as a kid, although I was never very good at them and would invariably get lost, leaving the teachers no option but to scramble a helicopter to come and find me. These kind of trails are a lot more sophisicated than just looking under rocks for clues, and SmartGPX proves a good testiment to that.

This is a game based around in the practice of geochanig, in which you travel the world in search of treasures. "What on Earth is geocaching?" I hear you cry. Well, it's basically a kind of sport in which participants hidden treasures and publish their coordinates in a common forum.

The objective for the rest of the registered members is to reach these coordinates and find the treasure. Using SmartGPX you can tap into this intruiging pasttime, joining a community of geocachers, and enrolling in the search for one of the hidden treasures, before publishing the positions of your own treasures.

It's pretty difficult to get to grips with and you'll need a GPS receiver to accompany your phone, but if you've got the time to spare, SmartGPX makes for an interesting diversion.

GETrack 1.77 - Save routes and tracks to view in Google Earth

You can record tracking data from your bluetooth GPS receiver and send the track via bluetooth to your PC for direct use with Google Earth. For business, holidays and fun.

There's no need for any conversion software on the PC side. The tracking data is ready to be used with "Google Earth". These files can then be sent by email to your friends or put them on your website.

On the PC side you only need a bluetooth dongle and the ability to receive files from your phone.

You can choose a logging interval from 10,20,30,60 and 300 seconds which covers driving speeds by car and bike and is also suitable for hiking tours.

Compatible with Series 60 devices (6600 FW 4.09.1 and better and later models). You need "Goole Earth" Version 3.0 or better, a NMEA compatible bluetooth GPS receiver and you must be able to receive files via bluetooth from your phone.

A fascinating way to track your routes with Google Earth!

I've calculated that I get lost at least 8 times a week, and if you're in a similar position then I can recommend doing what I did by installing Trippo on your mobile phone. The program allows you to view maps compatible with
, with all the functions needed to interpret GPS signals and view your position on screen.

The best thing about Trippo is that it allows you to check out exactly where you are using your own maps, rather than having to rely on those bundled with a GPS program. The app displays your position precisely, telling you your latitude, longitude and even your present altitude. It can also be used to calculate your course and list the GPS satellite coverage.

Whether you're travelling on your bike, on foot or even on a skateboard, Trippo provides a great way of viewing your position on your own map.

Compass 4.1 - A compass on your mobile

I like simple software packages and this is certainly one of the most simple I have ever used. Although the technology behind it is a little more intelligent. If you're an adventurer or even just someone who enjoys a walk then you might find Compass a good addition to your mobile, especially if you like adventuring in places you've never been before and might have difficulties getting home from.

It's very simple to use and the compass is big and clear. Just rotate the phone so that the sun and moon symbols match up with the sun or moon in the sky and you can see which way is North. However, while not a navigator myself, that all sounds too simple and with a dangerous chance of being not accurate, or not accurate enough. With GPS software on many phones now perhaps Compass is a step in the wrong direction.
