Everything is done for you so all you have to do is enter data such as your income, expenses and then the program automatically shows you where most of your money is going. In this way, you can easily identify areas where you need to tighten your belt or perhaps be careful with what you're spending.

The program generally monitors most kind of spending from bills to direct debits although you can create special fields for unusual costs and expenses. Ultimately, the pie charts and graphs are very useful in helping you manage your money. You can even track and analyse the performance of your investments and how they relate to your household spending.

For anyone who finds they've always got more going out than coming in but can't work out why, iMoney is an ideal tool for the non accountants out there.

I've never dabbled in the financial markets although if I did, I'd probably use something like QuoteTracker to keep track of the latest stock market fluctuations and movements.

QuoteTracker links into various datafeeds, brokers and financial sites to provide you with real-time quotes, live intraday charts and quotes according to what stocks you need to track. If you're brave enough, you can even upgrade to allow a professional trader to use your stocks using the QuoteTracker interface. Be warned however - if you don't have any idea about stocks and shares then this is a hugely complicated program. The main interface is simply a mess of numbers and graphs that won't really mean anything to you unless you have some experience of the stock market. In which case, be very careful before upgrading and allowing a real broker to deal with your money. If the developers had actually provided more user info and instructions as how to use the program and understand stock markets, it would have been a lot more useful.

If you know what the stock markets are all about, and are not intimidated by huge numbers of rapidly changing figures and graphs, then you may find some use for QuoteTracker.

If like me you are useless with figures and you have little or no financial background, then Buddi is a breath of fresh air.

It's aimed at making accounting as simple as possible by cutting out the jargon and complexities and making the process accessible to people from all walks of life. Best of all, it's completely free and open to modification as it's completely open source. It also works across platforms because it's based completely on Java. Obviously, if you're dealing with sensitive financial data then one major concern is security. The god news is that Buddi allows you to encrypt your accounting sheets but the bad news is that if you lose your password, there's no way of recovering it because there are no backdoors to the encryption according to the developer. While the graphics and interface are not exactly spectacular, the program does present everything very simply and in an easy to interpret way. It also allows you to export data although the number of formats it can do this in are pretty limited. There have also been reports by some users that sometimes, files become "corrupted" or inaccessible although the developer.

For anyone who doesn't want to splash-out on expensive accounting software or are plain scared of accounting, this is a great program.

Personal Finances enables you to exhaustively control your savings and expenses. Being a bit more careful about your bank accounts and credit cards, you'll be able to save money more easily.

The program displays a list with all the transactions registered in your accounts, either as expense or as income. They can be organized by categories, which comes in pretty handy to control the amount of money spent on certain areas. However, the list would be more comfortable to review with a revamped design, like assigning different colors to different categories.

Personal Finances has some interesting features such as support for multiple accounts and also different currencies. On the downside, I missed the possibility to backup the transaction list or at least export it to another format.

With Pesonal Finances you'll have a better control over the way your money is managed, by tracking incomes and expenses more carefully.

Finance Explorer is a simple program for those that want to take control of their own domestic accounting.

It's ideal for small businesses or freelancers and best of all, it's totally free. It can even handle stock updates directly from the web so you can use it as a budget tracker and investment tool too. There's an online tutorial to get you going which is very useful to start with. This is a program with no bells and whistles attached - it's very straightforward following Windows Explorer style. It's been designed to make accounting as easy as possible which means it can even download transaction from your bank directly although I would neither trust it doing this or could work out exactly how this could be done. The program is useful for it's categorisation of spending too so you can see exactly where your money is going every week. This includes credit spending, loans, debts, debit accounts, shares, savings accounts etc. If you're a fan of MS Money, the program can also export accounting sheets and files to OFX format so it can be used inside MS Money too.

Nothing fancy but for those that have been thinking it's time to get a grip on their spending, they could do a lot worse than Finance Explorer.

What I like about this program is that it's really useful in that it keeps your accounts in check but at the same time, elegant and easy to use.

This is a simple application designed to manage accounting over a broad range of areas without going into details or complicated economic concepts. The program is intuitive and incredibly easy to use and only requires Java to run. However, the over zealous use of Java means that sometimes it runs slow but it's no major headache. You can manage balances, generate reports, create and save complex filters and create charts and graphics for assets, liabilities, daily net worth tracking. You can even use it to store and track stock prices and quotes and it also includes a simple address book to store contacts, email and phone numbers.

A lovely little program that will do wonders for your finances.

I don't have much experience of playing the stock markets so I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the program made it for me to operate. You simply input the symbol of the stock, the amount that you have and the price before TakStock goes away and automatically calculates the losses or gains on the stock. You can add as many stocks as you like to track, view graphs showing the changes in your stocks over time and monitor prices through time, making it a very useful resource to help you float rather than sink. However, I'm still looking for a program that will automatically buy and sell the shares for me to make me millions while I sit in the bath.
