One of the main problems in my life at the moment is that I keep seeing more and more people on the street listening to their iPod Touch or iPhone. That in itself is not the problem, of course. The problem is I don't have one. And I want one.

Luckily though, I stumbled across this Pocket PC app that allows you to replicate the iPhone/iPod Touch audio player on your Windows Mobile device. Although the design of the app isn't completely the same, the interface is very similar and as such it provides you with a novel way of listening to music on your mobile - without the stylus.

On booting up S2P you'll probably notice that it doesn't auto-detect your MP3s, which is a little irritating, but quickly solved by ensuring that all of your music is organised well into folders, allowing you to navigate this way, rather than through a list.

Other than that, the program handles like a dream, with large buttons that can be easily tapped with a finger, and a scrolling menu system that animates smoothly. S2P can handle album art too, and if it doesn't detect any it's very simple to import. Playback is just as intuitive as navigation and again the buttons are very large.

You'll need a fair amount of system memory on your device because it is pretty RAM-hungry, but if your unit is up to it it's a great way of experiencing iPod Touch functionality without actually buying one.

Ringtone creation tools have come a long way since the days when you had to enter notes on your Nokia keypad, before playing them back as a tinny melody. Mixx Mobile offers an advanced set of features for making sophisticated ringtones.

As soon as you start using the program you realize that Mixx Mobile is actually quite a powerful piece of kit. The best way to start is to launch the Mixx Mobile demo project, which demonstrates how each tune is broken down into up to six tracks, represented by waveforms displayed in timelines.

Once you start playing around with the tools in Mixx Mobile the capabilities of what you can do with the app become clear. You can zoom into each track's waveform for precision audio editing, apply a series of customizable effects, record voice or music and use this in your creations and load MP3, Ogg and Wav files into Mixx Mobile.

Once you've finished editing your mix in Mixx Mobile, it's easy to export it as a ringtone through the program's rendering function. The audio quality in Mixx Mobile is fantastic, especially in terms of the bass output, which is far more genuine than you'll find in many similar apps.

Perhaps the only thing letting Mixx Mobile down is it's rather clunky user interface. True, it looks OK and you can apply your own skins to the editor. But, without the inclusion of a toolbar or a back button, tweaking audio and applying changes becomes quite a fiddly process.

However, with a bit of patience it's possible to produce some truly classic compositions using Mixx Mobile.

Practicing or producing music can be a difficult task if you don't have something to keep the beat, but now you can use your Windows Mobile device, thanks to TempoPerfect.

TempoPerfect is designed to help you stay in time by providing a clear and precise beat that can be easily adjusted to give you the correct beats per minute (bpm). You can set the bpm (from 40-280) using the arrow keys, or by entering the number yourself, and it is then shown in the digital display. When the beat is played, a flashing bar at the bottom of the interface lets you know its progress.

Unlike many basic metronomes, TempoPerfect also lets you set accented beasts and allows you to apply up to 8 subdivisions per beat. I also liked the inclusion Beat Tempo chart in TempoPerfect, as it means you can quickly check the technical definition for the time signature you're composing in (e.g. Allegro, Adagio, Largo, etc.)

TempoPerfect is one of the most comprehensive digital metronomes I've seen and it certainly beats the pants off using a mechanical device, which has the tendency to wind down. Perhaps the inclusion of a few virtual instruments or sample sound files would've made this a more complete piece of software though.

But if you're a practicing musician who needs something to keep time, TempoPerfect lets you do so with ease on your Pocket PC.

Since the introduction of the iPhone into popular culture, it seems today that if you haven't got a decent music player on your mobile, you're a bit of a dork.

That's bad news for anyone with a Windows Mobile device, because the built-in version of Windows Media Player is looking a bit long-in-the-tooth now. Fear not though, because with the PocketMusic Player Bundle, you can replace the default audio player with something altogether cooler.

The software provides an amazing environment in which to enjoy digital music. Once installed via the PC set-up, it lodges itself in its own section on the Today screen, giving you instant access to basic playback controls, plus options such as Load, Shuffle, Repeat and an alarm clock.

That's not even half the story though, because by tapping on this section you'll open the full PocketMusic Player, where a bounty of treasures awaits you. The default interface boasts large, shiny buttons that facilitate touchscreen control of your music. Alternatively, you can apply a Winamp skin to the player, giving you a raft a cool features within a familiar GUI. Features such as a graphic equalizer, playlists, file information, sorting, preamp, and more.

Delve into the menu system and you'll find even more treats. You can create bookmarks, toggle fullscreen mode, map shortcut keys, alter the fast forward/rewind step interval and organise playlists. All this, my friends, before you've even opened the 'Player Options' menu. Once you've done so, you can tinker with settings from crossfading effects to sleep timers.

For me this is, without question, the most fully-featured audio player for Windows Mobile. I would have given it five stars were it not for the fact it lacks an adequate Help section, something, I think is needed in an app of this magnitude.

Nevertheless, if you want to turn your Pocket PC into a all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player, I can't recommend PocketMusic highly enough.

You might not realize it, but mobile phones can make for great musical accompaniments for any tracks you might be producing. I'm not talking about sampling ringtones here, but rather using your device as a digital drum machine.

Little Snazzy Drummer is designed to let you do just that, allowing you to build drum loops and play them through your device. Once you've installed the cab file you can start playing around with beats by clicking on the 'Edit' option. Here you'll find five different drum tracks which, when put together, will form your loop or be used as a metronome to keep you in time.

The drum tracks comprise of Bass, Snare, Closed hat, Open hat, and Rim shot. Each track in the sequence has its own timeline where you can set the intervals at which each will sound, simply by checking or unchecking the boxes that run across the track. The track plays while you're editing, allowing you to easily preview the changes live and tinker with each track to keep the beat. Unfortunately, you can't isolate individual tracks though.

Once you've finished your beat, you simply return to the 'Play' menu and it will loop continuously, accompanied by a picture of a little snazzy drummer (who looks more like a big grotesque monster, if you ask me). It would've been nice if this little guy was animated but I guess you can't have everything.

It may not be the most advanced music production tool in the World, bu Little Snazzy Drummer is a very cool app that will help you create drum beats without any technical knowledge.

PlaylistMgr is a simple playlist editor for managing Windows Media Player playlists and it supports unicode. You can create or edit playlists easily and conveniently using this software. In addition, PlaylistMgr also helps you to manage your media streams and podcasts.

Usage notes:

• You can add a media stream by entering the URL in "Add URL" dialog
• In the podcast management dialog, you need to define the folder where the all the media files for the podcasts are kept
• You can double click on a media file in the list to play it

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, in which case the guy who invented the iPhone must have the biggest head in the World by now. It seems that any new mobile MP3 player that comes out these days borrows something from the Apple creation.

FlipSide adopts the scrolling album cover approach, giving you the ability to quickly flick through your music collection in a highly visual manner. The installation process is painless enough and once launched, you'll notice immediately how streamlined and lightweight FlipSide is, as it quickly searches for and displays all the audio files it finds on your device or storage card.

It then displays the artwork for each album on there and you can skip effortlessly through each by hitting the left and right buttons, or scrolling with your finger or stylus across the touchscreen. This will prompt the art to smoothly animate left or right. Don't worry if some of your music is lacking artwork, because you can add the album cover manually or search for it online at the click of a button.

Aside from the ubiquitous support for playlists, FlipSide lacks a little in terms of its options. You don't get any tools for sorting or categorizing your music, and there's no EQ or other fancy advanced playback options like cross-fading. Personally though, I'm willing to sacrifice the lack of options in exchange for a bloat-free application that runs quickly and is so wonderfully easy to use.

One of the best ways to experience the joys of the iPod touch MP3 player without actually buying one.

Resco has become a somewhat prolific developer of audio software, and this codec pack brings enhanced sonic technology to both its Audio Recorder and Pocket Radio apps. The pack basically consists or an AAC encoder, AAC decoder and MP3 encoder.

The AAC encoder is great because the format provides higher quality sound at lower bitrates, while MP3 remains popular where portability is required, as sizes really are kept to a minimum.

All the standard features are here (playlist, button config, reading mode) but the program is severely lacking polish: some options aren't saved (shuffle, repeat), various dialog boxes aren't very asthetic and the configuration options are quite limited.

It's great being able to receive voicemail attachments to emails using Pocket Outlook, or a similar Windows Mobile client. However, what's not great is that these can so easily get lost or disorganised, leaving you searching around for ages trying to find the messages you were sent.

mVisualVoiceMail changes all that, allowing you to use visual voicemail, in much the same way as you can on the iPhone. This eliminates the need to fumble through your inbox to track the voicemails down, or relying on guesswork to find out who they're from.

Instead this software analyses your inbox, capturing all voice messages available and listing information about each one, such as the name and telephone contact, as well as the date and time of submission. This makes SpoonRing a fantastic tool for adding some variety to your phone's ringtone.

Let's face it, it's cool, we all want one and if you say they're rubbish then you're just being jealous. I'm talking about the iPhone/iPod Touch, of course - a revolutionary product that has quickly become the most sought-after gizmo on the planet.

Obviously we don't all have the money to splash out on a luxury like this as we have mouths to feed or nicotine habits to keep up. So, an alternative is to just pimp your existing mobile device in order to make it look Apple's shiny new multimedia player.

This iPhone skin for Windows Media Player does just that, giving you a taste of what it's like to use the iPhone, on your Pocket PC. The physical resemblance to iTunes of the Apple handheld is pretty good and this one even includes video and album art.

Ultimately it's unable to replicate the cool functionality of the iPhone/iTouch interface, simply because of hardware restrictions. It's also only available for QVGA devices at present, although the developer is looking into the possibility of a VGA port. You can flip effectively between portrait and landscape though.

For many people, Last.fm has not only superceded traditional radio, but also their MP3 collection has been left untouched for months, such is the power of the service. If you haven't tried Last.fm at all yet then you're probably wondering what the big deal is. Just try it. In fact, try it on your mobile so you can carry it around with you and really get a feel for it.

Though still in development stage, Last.fm Mobile replicates some of the functionality of the online radio app, allowing you to tune into the kind of music you enjoy wherever you go. The program furnishes you with the 'scrobbling' feature of Last.fm, which basically checks the songs you're currently listening to the most and automatically suggests tracks from similar artists, helping you to broaden your musical horizons.

Provided, of course, you have a Last.fm account, the application is a breeze to set up, and you'll be listening to some great tunes within a couple of minutes. However, because Last.fm Mobile is in its early stages of development, it's a little quirky in places and the interface isn't as slick as it could be.

In terms of functionality, the Pocket PC version of the software replicates both the scrobbling feature and radio streaming of the original, whereas the Smartphone version only handles scrobbling through Windows Media Player.

Despite its rather primitive nature, Last.fm Mobile is still great for enjoying the wonder of this online broadcasting revolution werever you go.
