If you are addicted to Photoshop, Illustrator and the like and wish you feed your digital art addiction wherever you go then you may wish to think about installing Vspainter. The program furnishes you with an editing environment containing all the tools needed to use your mobile device as a canvas and paint anything you like.

The program itself includes a gorgeous visual interface with selectable modules, designed specifically to make it easier for the selection of the tools without taking up space on the screen, in much the same way as you can do with Photoshop these days.

As far as the tools go, Vspainter offers a wide selection of brushes of all types, a bulging colour palette, an aid for symmetrical drawing, four levels of zoom, tools for creating geometric shapes and light and shadow effects.

It lacks the support for layers that would make this a truly perfect app, but I was amazed at what is achievable with Vspainter.

I'm no Picasso, but I do enjoy scribbling the odd work of 'art' on the back of a cigarette packet on the way to work in the morning.

Actually, these days I don't use a cigarette packet as my canvas, but rather my mobile phone, which I find to be a much more workable solution. MiTo Team Paint is one of a number of drawing apps for Pocket PC and offers you the chance to doodle onto your device with your finger or stylus, using the touchscreen.

This utility is very much at the low end of the graphic design app scale, and is a bargain basement bin version of the likes of Adobe Illustrator or Corel Painter. There's only really one tool - the pen tool (obviously), which you can use to create pretty pictures on screen.

You can choose one of five different pen widths and change between seven colors, although you can't mix your own from a palette like most graphics software lets you do. Once you've finished your creation you can save it onto your device to preserve forever. Unfortunately you can only save as a BMP file though.

MiTo Team Paint is essentially a very basic drawing tool with no added bells and whistles. It is free though, and is better for the environment than doodling on endless bits of paper.

These days you don't need to be chained to the sofa if you want to enjoy the latest movies or TV shows. No Siree, the digital video revolution means that you can now check out the latest episode of 24 on your mobile phone, or watch your favourite films on your Pocket PC.

If you need to view movies in MPEG format then you can't afford to ignore PocketTV. The program is one of the most popular portable media players around, and performs very well to boot. Besides the usual things like loading movies, playback controlling, volume tweaking and full-screen mode, PocketTV can play streaming videos through the HTTP or FTP protocols.

There's an abundance of options to play around with, including the ability to set the size of the window, adjust colours, change brightness/contrast, tweak audio quality and a lot more besides.

If you're still in search of the perfect media player for your Windows Mobile device, you've probably just found it.

I've always been fascinated with those weird pictures where inside the picture is a picture of the picture and inside that there's a picture of that picture and inside that there's a picture of that picture and...well, you get the point.

Perpetual works along a similar brain-boggling prinicpal. You start off with an image which is completely composed of a series of other smaller images put together. The program then invotes you to zoom into the image, whereupon you discover that these smaller images are also made up of lots of other smaller images themselves. Zoom through these and guess what? Yep, more smaller images are revealed.

It's really quite fascinating and the process of zooming down infinitely through all the pictures is strangely hypnotic. There are hundreds of different pictures included to make up this kaleidoscope of weirdness, ranging from the Crazy Frog, to nature scenes, to graphic designs to nude models.

You can zoom manually, or allow the program to auto-zoom, though if you zoom manually, you get the benefit of being able to move around the image and choose a point to focus in on. Th only thing I would've like would be the ability to zoom out.

It doesn't serve much of a purpose, but Perpetual is certainly a captivating way of wasting some time.

From time to time you may need to take screen grabs of your Pocket PC, for instance, if you want to report a fault to a tech support site or present a tutorial or software presentation for someone.

WMSnapshot is designed to give you the ability to make quick captures of your Windows Mobile screen. It's free to download and is installed easily through a Cab file. The program works in a different way to many Pocket PC screen-grabbing tools in that it has no user interface to speak of. Instead, you activate the grabbing feature by clicking on the program icon (a little strange, because doing so only grabs the Start menu screen or Applications menu).

Possibly the best way to use the program though is to set up a hotkey that will activate the grab when pressed. You'll need to do this from within the 'Buttons' menu within the Windows Mobile settings, but there is no option to do this from within WMSnapshots itself.

All of the snaps you take are stored within your My Documents/My Pictures folder (or the default folder where your images are normally saved). Again, there's no option for changing the destination within MPSnapshots.

Ultimately this is the crux of the program - it's great for taking quick snapshots, but lacks anything in the way of options or editing features.

It's handy to be able to take screen grabs of your mobile device from time to time (especially if you're a software reviewer!) but unfortunately there's no default capture tool included within the Windows Mobile OS.

Fear not though, because Spb ScreenShot is one of a number of third party apps that let you capture screenshots of your Pokcet PC. The program is a breeze to use and there are only really two different interface screens you need to worry about.

The first is the Options menu, where you can assign a button on your device to take the capture or set a time limit upon which it will be activated. From this menu you can also choose your desired location to save the image file to, and select the format that the grab will be saved as. Unfortunately there are only two options here though> PNG or BMP, and it would've been nice to see support for JPEGs or GIFs. Another omission from the program is a facility for editing your screenshots.

Ultimately this is a pretty basic capturing tool, but if you want a quick way to grab screens, Spb ScreenShot will do the job effectively.

Being a keen photographer I love messing around with pictures on my computer. In fact, sometimes I wish I didn't have to wait until I got home before I tinker around with them to make something creative. Hang on, what's that? I don't have to wait until I get home because Pocket Artist lets me edit graphics on the move? Now this I've got to see.

Sure enough, this software allows you to manipulate images on your Pocket PC, supporting all the major graphics formats, including JPG, PNG, GIG, BMP and PSD. Once you've installed the program using the Windows Installer and loaded an image the creative world is your oyster thanks to the bevy of tools on offer here.

Pocket Artist's user environment is fairly similar to the one you'll see in the popular desktop-based graphics packages, if slimmed down somewhat. There are only eight icons on the toolbar for stuff like drawing tools, shape selection, fill and stroke colour and brush style and size.

What's more, there are dozens more tools locked within the pop-up menu system accessible from the bottom of the interface. Here you can do things like apply filters to images, zoom in and out of the image, rotate and transform, and adjust colour/brightness etc. The fact that Pocket Artist also lets you work with layers demonstrates exactly how powerful this program is, and you have enough tools at your disposal to create some truly impressive imagery.

The problem lies in the fact that the tools aren't as easily accessible as they could be and because there are no floating palettes or extended toolbars like you'll find on the big screen graphics apps, you'll need to do a lot more hunting around for the features you need. Nevertheless, considering the size limitations of a mobile screen, the app does well to put as much as it does on display without looking cluttered.

Even if you're a high-end digital photographer or designer you'll be impressed by exactly how many powerful editing tools Pocket Artist contains.

An entertaining image editing application, Funny Tools gives you all the tools to play around with pictures of your friends. Using Microsoft ActiveSync, you can easily import and export photos to and from your PC. The program also lets you use images in your Pocket PC contact list and morph them together.

Funny Tools ingeniously includes keyboard shortcuts to quickly apply selected effects to photos. Although the program doesn't offer really advanced editing options, you can still distort or blur images, set brush size and strength. You probably won't use it to remove acne from someone's picture, but will probably enjoy deforming pictures of people you know.

So how many photos do you own of people you don't really like? Well now you can do something rather nasty with this very strange photo editor. Pocket Goo takes any normal looking digital photograph and allows you to manipulate it into as weird a picture as you like. Features such as grow, shrink and swirl with various brush sizes mean you can click on any part of a photo eg an eye or a nose and completely deform it.

This trial only offers two minutes manipulation at any time but it gives you a very clear idea of what to expect. It's a very simple piece of software to use, you won't need any design skills, just click a preferred option from the dropdown menu and get to work on the image. It's a great way of making very funny pictures of friends, family, pets or enemies.
