Series 40 Theme Studio - an official Nokia software package - lets you change virtually every part of your display, from the folder icons to the battery indicator. You can tweak colors, change fonts and add custom pictures to set your phone apart from the rest.

The user interface in Series 40 Theme Studio is split into two halves - the left containing a menu of all the things you can change, and the right a live preview window displaying the current state of the theme.

The degree you can customize your device really is limited only by your imagination. Actually, it's also limited by your patience because the user interface in the Series 40 Theme Studio isn't very user friendly.
The menus are cluttered and poorly-labeled and this program is crying out for drag-and-drop functionality.

Note that if you have a newer Nokia phone not support by the Series 40 Theme Studio, then go check out the Series 60 Theme Studio, which will let you create themes for S60 phones.

If you have the persistence to master the cumbersome interface in Series 40 Theme Studio, you should be able to pull off some cool designs though.

Fortunately you can now use SmillaEnlarger, a very simple tool that enlarges images while keeping quality loss at a minimum. How does it manage to do that? Easy: by apply a quick resizing algorithm – created by the developer - that smoothes and de-noises the original image.

SmillaEnlarger features a simple interface, though it can be a bit confusing to use. There are two preview windows, one with the complete image and the other one with the area currently under the zoom grid. You only have to resize this grid by dragging it with the mouse to make the image larger. Use the 'Preview' button to check the results, and the 'Calculate' button to save the image in the selected directory.

The only thing you should bear in mind is that the first result you obtain may not be the best one – that is, it may look too artificial, almost like an oil painting. My advice is to fiddle with all the available sliders (sharpness, flatness, presharpen, dithering and de-noise) and try different combinations until you find the perfect mixture of size and quality.

With SmillaEnlarger you can enlarge images without losing too much quality, and obtain a pretty decent big sized picture instead of a bunch of blurry pixels.

XWindows Dock is an easy to use, minimal dock bar that will give you instant access to your most frequently-used apps. The basic app contains icons for My Computer and the Recycle Bin, but you’ll be able to simply drag and drop anything else you want.
For certain features, however, such as the Gmail checker, you’ll need to download the separate XWindows Dock plug-in manager.
This dock app isn’t the most visually attractive around.
Beyond size and location on your screen, it can’t really be modified without downloading extra modules. One nice feature, however, is Container, which allows you to place any folder on the dock.
When you click, you’ll get an easy-to-view fan of the items that folder contains.
There’s nothing really wrong with XWindows Dock, and some of you might even appreciate the minimalism of the application.
During testing, however, it seemed a little too basic and inflexible, especially when compared to other, fancier docks like Nexus. XWindows Dock does exactly what it says it will though, so if you like its style, go right ahead.
As docks go, XWindows Dock is fairly basic, but entirely functional.

Before optimization, you should either choose one of three compression settings, or customize your own. High compression gives you reduced quality, but tiny file sizes, whereas low compression keeps quality high while still reducing file size impressively. In our tests of FILEminimizer Pictures, file size was reduced from anywhere between 65% and 80%, which really makes a difference when optimizing in bulk.

Results are impressive, so for bulk compression for things like email or saving to a USB for a presentation, FILEminimizer Pictures is really useful. There is little to criticize with FILEminimizer Pictures, except that the interface has too many buttons that repeat the same function. It's not necessary to have three for the same function! However, this odd design choice doesn't harm functionality.

FILEminimizer Pictures offers impressive compression of image files, without the inconvenience of having to decompress them for viewing. A great space saving app.

In settings you can choose whether to resize and keep original proportions as well as a variety of quality options for the different image formats (JPEG PNG BMP GIF TIFF). You can also add a watermark to your works of photographic genius, making it harder for people to use your pics.

ArtResize is a simple, no nonsense application, which does the job of resizing and watermarking well. The conversion is quick, and you can easily choose the destination folder. The watermark feature requires you to have a image file prepared to use as a watermark though - you can't just write text into the option box.

Art Resize is effective, easy to use and free - it's hard not to recommend something like that!

Bigasoft Total Video Converter works fine, but it’s not very powerful or refined.

Now, we all know about JPEG and that files of this type usually have an acceptable size. However. it’s increasingly common nowadays to be faced with large, highly detailed images which can be difficult to share with friends without resorting to CD-ROMS.

Image Compressor reduces the size of JPEG file (which is already a compressed format) by analysing every pixel in the image. With our test the file-size reduction from a standard JPEG was between 20% and 45%.

After zooming in on the compressed image, we noticed that the quality was basically identical to its original.

The program also includes other features, like one to retouch photos with some Photoshop-style filters or the one that compares the technical properties of two images.

I particularly liked the 3D web photo-album which creates a cool 3D scrolling effect for a selection of images (the rendering is better with no more than about 30 files).

It's a shame though that the application doesn't provide an option to share the 3D presentation and if you simply copy and move or send the files, it doesn't work.

Image Compressor is a useful tool to have and it includes some impressive features. Recommended to anyone looking to reduce file-size but not compromise on quality.
