If you're the sort of person who needs to stay on top of weather information for either your business or social life then Tenki will help you do so wherever you roam.

Tenki is designed to transform your Windows Mobile device into your own pocket weather center. The application feeds you with a wealth of meteorological information for a given location on our planet.

Unfortunately, I found the Tenki interface rather clunky. The main screen is confusingly laid out and it's hard to know where to start. What's more, if you live outside the US then you need to load your web browser and obtain your city code via the Internet, which is rather annoying. It would've been nice to be able to enter your location based on your GPS location too.

Once you've finally got your location loaded into Tenki though, you'll realize it was worth all the effort just for the sheer amount of weather information at your disposal. There are three different views available: Current, Forecast and Station, and each is packed with up-to-the-minute readings on everything from temperature to humidity to sunrise and sunset times.

Despite it's rather awkward user interface, Tenki proves to be a comprehensive and reliable guide to your local weather.

These days if you want to know the weather forecast you don't need to wait for it on TV or buy a newspaper.

WeatherBug Direct is a Windows Mobile add-on that provides you with live local weather information wherever you may be. This information is displayed on your Smartphone's home screen, outlining the forecast for today, tomorrow, and the next day. The data is presented in a very clear way with a weather icon, plus the temperature (only displayed in Fahrenheit, sadly) and the outlook.

Using WeatherBug Direct is pretty straightforward. You set up the application simply by entering the name and country of your location and selecting the nearest point to you from the list of local weather stations. There are more than 8,000 different WeatherBug Direct stations, so it's never that difficult to find one close to you. You can add as many different locations as you like, then set the 'Current location' to the place you're in now.

You can also use WeatherBug Direct to view current (well a few hours old at least) satellite images, weather cameras and radars. Note though, that the radar and camera image features don't always seem to be available, as it depends on your location.

In terms of its accuracy, WeatherBug Direct wasn't perfect in our tests. In fact, as I speak the program is telling me there's only a 32% chance of rain today. It's raining.

While it may not give pinpoint readings, WeatherBug Direct displays live forecasts in a very clear manner and boasts a few interesting features.

If you like looking at the planet through Google Earth then Pocket Earth is an excellent application that allows you to watch and interact with the glorious globe all the way from space. However, there's more to this than pretty pictures. You can search for locations, check the weather - including wind speed and humidity - get information about moon phases, sunrises and sunsets, and see what time it is across the world. There are even thermal maps.

Literally everything you want from the planet is on here. You can zoom in and out and scroll about from point-to-point to track distances between different locations. The graphics are great and the scrolling feature is smooth. There really is so much in this simulation that you should just get downloading it right now.

I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to imagine how any of us got around before the invention of Google Maps. The online app is now probably the best way of finding the best route between A and B, and is also great for looking down at your house from the clouds.

Combined with GPS satellite positioning and a mobile phone, Google Maps is a powerful weapon against getting lost, and Google Navigator merges these three things beautifully. The program is able to download maps from the great Google site for offline viewing.

From here Google Navigator can search, view points of interest, plan routes and explore any area of the planet. Like Google Maps, the program includes three viewing modes: map, satellite, and hybrid; different zoom levels, and the ability to save your routes KML

More importantly, if you have GPS, you can view your position on the screen and activate the route planner navigation mode. This works in much the same way as a sat-nav system you'd use in a car and even includes voice instructions to help you get to where you're going.

If you find yourself getting lost on a regular basis, Google Navigator will help you get out of tight situations using your Pocket PC. If you have a GPS receiver too, you'll find this app even more useful.

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe but if you want to discover it properly you should really think about getting a guide.

What I like about it is that it doesn't just reel off the same old stuff about all the tourist attractions and instead presents things in a more interesting way. For instance, you get tips on the best times to visit places, and a huge series of top tens featuring everything from the top ten things to see in Wenceslas Square to the top ten Czech filmmakers.

You also get a whole raft of maps, including a street index, transport map and metro map. Be sure to check the transport prices when you get there though, as the info in the guide may be out of date.

PocketWeather from SBSH allows you to view up-to-the-minute information on weather conditions in cities and towns all over the world, in a standalone application and as a plugin for your Today screen. The range of locations available, the wealth of climatic information provided and the simplicity of the Today screen plugin are all impressive, as is the small size of the program. It can even give you information on recent earthquakes!

PocketWeather provides a wide range of settings which allow you to select your locations, order them by importance, set the frequency of updates, choose your preferred language and more. You can also choose how your locations are displayed on the Today screen and if you have a high-end device, you can select VGA icons for extra eye-candy points.

For many users, the weather data you have on your device will be updated most often via your dock or USB cable. I found that I had to adjust the connection settings in PocketWeather manually in order to allow it to connect in this way. Another small issue I had was that I couldn’t set the program to update forecast data more than once every four hours. Updating current conditions can be done far more frequently, but I feel that forecast data ought to be just as up to date. Finally, I found that if I changed any settings, I would have to ‘apply’ them before moving to another tab in the options dialog. A warning would come in handy here, as at first I kept losing changes I had made because they were discarded automatically.

These problems however are fairly minor and don’t detract from the overall quality of the application. If you’re looking for one interesting and attractive plugin for your Today screen, PocketWeather is highly recommended.

Getting around Rome is made much easier thanks to the inclusion of zoomable road maps, bus routes and Metro stations. There's even a map of the area surrounding the city in case you want to explore a bit further afield.

Although the main interface is a little bland, the inclusion of a searchable index means that it's pretty easy to find your way around this guide.

And likewise, this DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel guide makes it pretty easy to find your way around the best sights of Rome.

I also thought the Sight Index was very useful, as it allows you to quickly view a list of all London's main attractions then find out where they are on a map just by clicking on them.

As with most guides like this, it's worth double-checking the prices of attractions and transport online, as some of it may be out of date.

After installing the program launcher and the city pack you're presented with a series of 13 icons, representing different sections of the guide such as Highlights, Top 10, Around Town, and a range of street and transport maps.

Each section is packed with information on the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps. What I like about the Dorling Kindersley Top 10 series is that besides all the usual blurb about each attraction, you get loads of tips and facts that tourists aren't usually aware of.

The Top 10 section itself is great fun to follow. It boasts a huge range of different lists, including the top things to see at the Empire State Building, the best dance clubs, most important NY sports events, and the most important dates in the city's history.

There are zoomable maps covering all of New York's districts and you can use them to plot the best course between two points.

Overall, the DK Eyewitness New York guide is very comprehensive, though some of the public transport information and pricing may be a little out-of-date, so it's worth checking before you go.

Going for a meal with your friends or family is usually a good way to relax and have a good time. However, quite often these friendly get-togethers descend into full-scale warfare once the bill comes and the ensuing argument over who needs to pay what begins.

Often, the easiest way to settle the dispute is to decide to split the bill, although even then, it can take ages for everyone to work out how much they need to pay. Not any longer though, because Fizz Bill Now is here to help you resolve your disagreements.

This small app allows you to calculate the amount of the bill that each person needs to pay. You simply need to enter the total cost, insert the percentage of tip that you think should be paid (or which you're required to pay), then key in the number of people to split the bill between. At least that's the theory. Aside from this issue, I thought perhaps it would've been useful if Fizz had included some kind of currency converter within Bill Now. It would be perfect for those foreign trips where you quickly want to find out how much the meal would've costed if you were back home.

Despite its fairly limited scope, Bill Now still offers a quick and convenient way of settling your dinner party disputes.

The freeware provides a route planner which works in the same way as similar other software programmes. Simply specify a new route by entering either an address or, interestingly, one 'Point Of Interest' such as a hotel or restaurant. You can save these once you have located them.

There is the option to search for directions using roads or motorways depending how you want to travel, and you can choose the longest or shortest route, depending on how much time you have. Before all this you must load the map data, for free, from your PC using MapLoader. You can make this as detailed as you want by even adding petrol stations directly from the internet. There are more features available but unfortunately you'll have to pay and the free software will probably give you what you need.

There are many GPS-based pieces of software around now, each promising to get you home from any destination, but it's nice to see the old A-Z making something of a come back here in this full colour mobile version of everyone's favourite mini road atlas. Of course the downside is it only covers Great Britain and won't sync if you leave the country or tell you exactly where you are at any point in time. But if you need a simple to use and friendly road map you'll do well to find anything better.

The pocket A-Z also comes with a facility to save your favourite places, for when you want to revisit and quickly find directions, plus a marker tool that allows you to map locations and work out the distances between two points. There is a fully searchable 4,400 index of key places including cities, towns and airports but if you want to find anything less well known you'll have to search around yourself. For drivers this is a really useful application and will save unfolding those giant map pages screwed-up in the glovebox.
