One of my favorite films is Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. But I can't help thinking that if Macauley Culkin had had this program installed on his Palm then he wouldn't have had so much trouble. I guess the film wouldn't have been as good though.

The Top 10 section itself is great fun to follow. It boasts a huge range of different lists, including the top things to see at the Empire State Building, the best dance clubs, most important NY sports events, and the most important dates in the city's history.

There are zoomable maps covering all of New York's districts and you can use them to plot the best course between two points.

Overall, the DK Eyewitness New York guide is very comprehensive, though some of the public transport information and pricing may be a little out-of-date, so it's worth checking before you go.

I'm fed up with having to carry so much with me every time I visit a city, so I've started using mobile travel guides rather than lugging books and maps around all the time.

This Palm-based guide to Paris is based on the popular Dorling Kindersley book on the city of love. After installing both the travel application and the Paris pack you'll be presented with a series of icons representing different sections of the guide, such as Highlights, Around Town, Metro guide, and Street Index.

Although the icon-based navigation isn't quite as intuitive as the more traditional one-screen menu-style interface, one tap on any of the images will take you to that particular section. Once you start using the guide you'll be bowled over by how much data and useful information is in here, from quirky facts about the Louvre to details of some of the best hidden cafes in the streets of the French capital.

What I particularly like about the DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide & Map series is the inclusion of a huge database of top ten lists for the city, and the Paris version is no different. So, if you want to find out the ten best Da Vinci paintings to see, or are wondering what are the top walks to do, then look no further.

Another thing worth mentioning is the street and metro maps included in the guide, which are first rate, as they allow you to search for the quickest route between two places. Be sure to check the prices for the trains though, because those in the guide could be out of date.

If you want to discover Paris without having to carry a lot with you, this represents the perfect way.

Discovering a new city on your own can be great fun but also a little hard work, and even dangerous at times. This is why it's always good to have a travel guide to carry round as you go.

The Top 10 series of travel guides from Dorling Kindersley has always been a favorite of mine. These days though, I always seem to have more and more stuff to carry on my trips so I've started installing guides on my PDA so I don't have to stuff a book in my pocket along with my phone, wallet, camera, sandwiches and map.

The Barcelona DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide & Map is designed to guide you through the highlights of this wonderful Spanish city, furnishing you with information about the best places to visit, and, more importantly, details of how to get there.

After installing the travel guide and the city pack, you're presented with a large array of different sections, represented in the form of icons. Among the options here are Highlights, Top 10, Streetsmart, Index, Metro and train guide, and Favorites. I felt perhaps these options would be better presented in the form of a more traditional menu interface, but nevertheless one tap on any of the icons will take you directly to that particular section of the guide.

Exploring the various sections is almost like perusing the city itself such is the wealth of information packed into the program. It details all of the major sights and attractions, as well as lots of lesser-known places that are worth visited. I particularly liked the 'Top Ten' section where you get loads of top ten lists to help you plan your trips, including everything from the best tapas choices, through the pick of the markets, to the most impressive paintings in the Picasso museum.

Living in Barcelona myself, I can vouch for the accuracy of the information and many of the interesting facts littering the guide were completely new to me. The zoomable maps and metro and train guides are clearly presented, and I love the way you can plan the best route between two places with ease.

I should point out though, that some of the train and bus prices are a little out-of-date so perhaps it's worth checking these online before you go.

On the whole though, this guide manages to translate the quality and depth of the famous travel book series into an accessible mobile companion.
