Delivery Status 4.4.1 - Find out where your parcels are from your Dashboard

If you're one of those people who orders lots of stuff from the Internet and waits with baited breath by the door every morning only to be disappointed when all that comes into the mailbox is another bill, then you may want to check out Delivery Status. The nice-looking Dashboard widget gives you information about the status of your delivery from numerous carriers, including Amazon, DHL and UPS.

Firstly, you get details of the expected time of arrival. Thereupon, you can check the exact location of a package at the time, along with the amount of time left before it's safely in your hands - all from your Dashboard. You can even set the widget to provide you with automatic updates when the status of your delivery changes. Although the database of shipping companies is far from comprehensive, Delivery Status provides a great way for impatient people to see where their order is. It also saves all the hassle and cost of checking with the carrier every five minutes.

Time Machine Buddy 1.02 - Organize Time Machine logs

Time Machine is one of my favorite new Leopard applications, yet I have to admit that it fails to provide sufficient information on backups.

This where Time Machine Buddy comes in. This little widget structures and displays all backup logs from the application, letting you know in real time what is being saved. The program sits in your Dashboard and is normally inactive until you decide to launch Time Machine.

Once the program is running, all you need to do is open up Time Machine Buddy to monitor the logs. For most people, the information found in them might probably be just a scramble of words. However, if you look more closely at the logs you'll be able to understand what is being saved.

Time Machine Buddy logs backups every 15 minutes and you can refresh it manually to ensure it has all the latest info.

Time Machine Buddy, by displaying full logs, makes for a good companion to Apple's backup program.

More than a clock! Displays the current level of natural light (daylight, twilight, or night), moon phase information, local times and country flags for cities throughout the world. VelaClock takes advantage of the new Dashboard feature in Apple's Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger".

VelaClock is a unique widget in that it is completely self-contained. Many widgets are light weight front-ends to web services; such widgets require an internet connection. By contrast, VelaClock is designed to function without an internet connection, and so is particularly useful for laptop users away from their home or office. Astronomical calculations are performed by an internal code module.

The MobileMe button is a little Dashboard widget that gives you quick access to all the pages of Apple's new online MobileMe service.

Whether you are looking to access your account page, your contacts, calendars, photos, iDisk or mail page, the MobileMe button always puts only a click away and what's more gives you a different entry point to the web service than by your browser.

MobileMe button is smaller than most widgets, which sometimes makes it a little difficult to work with. To move the widget around you have to click on either it's left or right side, which takes a little getting used to.

Interestingly Mobile Me button used to be called Dot Mac button. Now that Apple have updated their service the developer has also decided to offer a new version of the widget.

Although the widget could be a little bigger, MobileMe button gives you access to Mac's fresh new online services directly from your Dashboard.

WorldRadio Widget 1.3 Beta 2 - Listen to the radio from your Dashboard

I still very much enjoy listening to radio, even if more often than not I find myself following my favorite programs by way of podcasts on my computer rather than on a traditional radio.

WorldRadio is a smart little widget that allows you to save up to ten different radio stations, in any format, from mp3 to asx, asf or ram. Immediately accessible from your Dashboard it makes it easy to listen to all your stations whenever you want.

As the name suggests, WorldRadio works best to keep programs from around the world. Via the info side of the widget, simply add the countries that you want and then the related radio programs for each. Unfortunately WorldRadio doesn't provide preset stations, so you'll have to go and pick up the streams yourself.

If you can't spend a day without listening to your favorite radio programs, then you'll like having the WorldRadio Widget on your Dashboard.

QuickCal Widget 0.90 - Create iCal events in seconds

QuickCal will suit you if you don't have the patience to open Apple's iCal every time you need to create a new event.

Just type in details like the place, people and subject of the event and don't forget to add the date (in the American format). Press enter and QuickCal will save it automatically in iCal. All it takes is two seconds and you don't even need to open up the program. If you click on the 'info' button you'll see you can select which calendar to add an event to and set yourself multiple reminders from all events up to those that are more than a month away. Reminders can appear from 15 minutes up to three weeks before an event is due.

QuickCal isn't the nicest looking widget you'll find, but I found it very intuitive to use and well integrated with iCal.

If you're looking for a widget to handle all your new events, then QuickCal is a good choice.

AirPort Radar Widget 1.2 - Find WiFi hotspots in your area

AirPort Radar is a free and convenient tool for quickly scanning the area for AirPort and other wireless networks. It will work with AirPort cards, MacWireless 11g PC Cards, and 11g PCI cards.

Signal Strength at a Glance

Visual signal meters tell you the strength of the AirPort signal for an easy-to-read radar screen.

Sortable Network List

Click on a category to sort the list of networks by that category. Click on the radio waves symbol to sort by signal strength.

Connect to Open Networks

By simply clicking on the name you can connect to any network that is not password protected.

Remember Lost Networks

When a network falls "below radar" it won't disappear from your radar screen right away. This is particularly useful when a network is right on the threshold - with AirPort Radar it won't jump on and off the radar screen, it will just turn grey temporarily while it is too weak to connect to. You can choose how many scans a lost network stays on-screen with the "Scan Memory" setting on the back side of the widget.

Auto-Resizing for Various List Lengths

The AirPort Radar widget will automatically resize itself to accomodate longer or shorter lists of wireless networks. If the list grows longer than the maximum, a scrollbar will appear.

The iPhone 3G is the second version of Apple's highly acclaimed mobile device. Revealed at the WWDC 08 conference, it will be made available in 22 countries on the 11th of July.

This little widget is basically a countdown for the official release of the iPhone 3G, which displays the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds left. I also quite like how it shows the iPhone 3G itself and many of you who just can't wait for the release will surely find at least a little bit of comfort just from having this little widget on their Dashboard.

In some ways it is quite similar to the iPhone Widget, a countdown to the release of the original iPhone. However this last wdiget also offered up a feed of Apple news along with the countdown.

Those of you that can't wait for the release of the iPhone 3G will want to get a hold of this widget.

Padlock is a little widget which allows you to lock up your mind just with a double click.

The application also allows you to put your Mac to sleep, in case you want to make best use of your battery and give your screen a rest. Padlock comes in five different colors: black, green, red, blue and violet.

Watch out when using it as you can end up accidentally locking up your Mac when just trying to press the info button (located at the bottom right, just like in most widgets).

All in all, Padlock is fairly basic, but it will surely come in handy if you don't want people getting access to your Mac. A double click and it's locked. Before using it, make sure you know your password though, as otherwise you could be in for some surprises.

With cameras proliferating in our cities these days, it was only a matter of time until you could view them on your own computer. Manhattan Live! is a webcam widget that shows 24/7 images of Greenwich Village.

The widget automatically alternates between different cameras in different streets and areas of Greenwich Village. Make sure that you have a good connection to have good streaming images from the webcam. Even so, the widget does take time to load up and we found the image too lag way to frequently.

We don't recommend keeping this widget on your Dashboard all the time, except if your Mac is packed with memory and you have a good connection, as it will eat up your RAM. However if you're curious as to what's going on in NYC, it's nice to have around.

If you've invested in some stocks you know the importance of being able to follow them at any time, especially these days when the markets are so volatile. The iStocks widget lets you view all your stocks straight from your Dashboard.

Similar to the Apple Stock widget, iStocks displays symbols in a list with their current value and growth or fall. The bottom section shows the progression of the value in a graph, which can be set from over one day up to over two years. You can sort, reorder and rename symbols and look them up for more information and data.

All in all, iStocks is highly similar to the Apple Stocks widget, except that it connects to Yahoo! Finance meaning you can show any stock symbol from any market around the world. There are also five different color themes to choose from. If the widget is getting too crowded you can show different instances of it.

The only real limitation is that iStocks won't show you options, futures and bonds.

iStocks is an all around good widget to display stocks from all markets. Try the multiple instances to show all your stocks.

Google Adsense Widget 2.0 - Follow Adsense for your Dashboard

Google Adsense can be a real addiction. If you want to control it, or if you simply want to have quicker access to your Adsense account this widget is for you.

Nothing too elaborate, this widget will simply display your current earnings. Thanks to the sparkline at the bottom of the widget you can check earning for the last 48 days. Although it's an excellent way of quickly seeing the evolution of your earnings for the past month and a half, it's a little imprecise when looking for a specific date.

The game principal is well known: Behind a cover there is a secret code consisting of four colors. To find it you need a little bit luck and good combination skills. By multiple clicking with the mouse you set four colored token in the first row. When you have finished the row and submitted it, the first trial will be rated: For every correctly set color you get a black pin, for every right color on the wrong position you get a white one. So you know, how many correct colors you've found, but not which colors and on which position! By trying and combining using the rating you can resolve the code. But beware: You have only ten trials!

Currency Converter 0.9.1 - Convert currencies from the Dashboard

Currency Converter is a Dashboard widget which any serious traveler should not leave their Mac without.

This widget lets you convert simultaneously any amount in four different currencies. Values are regularly updated, that is if you're connected to the internet and Dashboard is working. The widget includes not only the world's most used currencies but also lesser known ones and even legacy currencies such as the French Franc or the Deutsch mark.

To use it, simply select the currencies of your choice from the drop down menus, type in a value and let the widget do its job. If you're converting from one currency to another you probably won't need the four entries made available though. Currency Converter goes up to a precision of five decimals and can also calculate taxes, if you include them. On a side note, Currency Converter also includes a number of different themes to choose from.

Currency Converter is a useful widget to precisely convert to any currency in the world. Fills in a gap oddly left out by Apple. A must have for your Dashboard.

Ratio 1.0 - Calculate screen ratios

Ratio is a simple little widget that allows you to measure ratios for selections of your screen.

This can come in handy when adjusting screen size, setting an image to the right ratio or deciding what display you want an interface to be adapted best to. To use it, all you need to do is enter the width and height of your area and select the ratio, such as 16:9 or 4:3. Ratio will take care of adjusting either the width or height so the selected area corresponds to the proper ratio.

It would have been nice to get more information on what ratio is best for what screen or to be able to simply drag with your cursor to select the area. Still, entering width and height are easy enough. We recommend using this program if you're a web designer or a video editor looking for the proper screen size.
