CrickZenga allows you to view live scorecards of all matches that are currently in progress. Each match listing includes a preview and a rundown of the two squads. Click on a player’s and you’ll be able to view their stats and averages. You can also view the archived scorecards of recent matches, check out forthcoming fixtures, and view current standings.

The regularly-updated news section in CrickZenga brings you the latest cricket news from around the World, though the app has a bias towards Indian cricket. The Cricket Genius section is also worth checking out. It challenges you to pick the winners of upcoming matches in a competition against other users. Make it to the top ten and your name will appear on the leaderboard.

The annoying thing about CrickZenga is the ads that blight the app. Every time you visit a new page you’re served an advert for another service, which gets irritating very quickly. Still, I guess that’s what allows CrickZenga to be published as a free app.

CrickZenga makes for a handy score checker for any cricket fan, but particularly for followers of the IPL.

Using the GPS function of your phone, SportyPal is able to log lots of data about your activities. The software records you speed, movement, distance traveled, position and calories burned.

Using SportyPal is as simple as choosing New Workout from the main menu then selecting the type of activity you'll be doing. The GPS service will then be launched and the app will kick into action just as you do. The screen will show you the elapsed time and the all the activity data mentioned above. You can pause the timer at any moment by pressing the Select button to set a checkpoint.

All of the runs, cycles, skates, etc. you do are stored in the My Workouts section of SportyPal. Besides getting a rundown of all the stats for each workout you can also view you route in Google Maps and see the evolution of your exercise on a graph. If you register with SportyPal then you're able to upload all of your workouts to the internet.

SportyPal didn't always seem precise during our tests. At times, following a connection drop-out or a change of environment, the stats seem to skew. For instance, at one point I was apparently running at 56mph! The majority of the time, though, the measurements seem pretty accurate.

Although it's not 100% accurate all the time, SportyPal makes for a handy way to track your workouts and log the routes you've taken.

Despite the name, RunKeeper actually handles a variety of sports - from walking to skiing and skateboarding to wheelchair sports. There's even an "other" category in case your sport doesn't fit in. Once you choose the activity, hit Start Activity and RunKeeper will begin to monitor the workout.

RunKeeper uses GPS to track your progress, so it needs to be enabled. Using the data from the GPS, it will tell you how far you've gone, how fast you're going and how many calories you've burned. You can pause the workout, and when you're done, enter notes on how it went. You'll also be able to view your workout on a map by pressing the map icon to the left of the total distance display. Just a word of warning: give RunKeeper's GPS function a few minutes to fix location before starting, or you could end up with an inaccurate reading.

RunKeeper also keeps a record of all your workouts, so you can look at them later. The application gives you the option to register for a RunKeeper account, but it doesn't really explain the benefits. You can use the app without registering for RunKeeper Pro, but some of the options, such as posting to Facebook and Twitter will not be enabled in RunKeeper Free.

RunKeeper is a good app for keeping track of distance, time and calories when working out, but for the best functions, you'll have to register.

The application covers a wide range of sports, including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, Formula One and cricket. Each of the different sports appears as a different tab in the ESPN ScoreCenter and you can flick between tabs using the arrow buttons at the bottom.

ESPN ScoreCenter gives you the ability to select your favorite teams, from any sport, and have their results appear on the front page of the app.

Essentially, ESPN ScoreCenter is just a front for ESPN's mobile web. The app itself only displays scores and results, so if you want more in-depth info, it'll pop open your browser and launch a web page. While it's a shame everything couldn't be packaged in the ESPN ScoreCenter app, the broadcaster's mobile site is so slick that this is forgivable.

Once you've been redirected to the ESPN Mobile Web Gamecenter you can follow games with play-by-play coverage, view stats, read about key players and much more.

Overall, ESPN ScoreCenter makes for an excellent sporting companion to help you follow games while you're out and about.

In earlier versions, James deemed FotMob an impressive app that was severely limited by its lack of leagues. Well those problems have been totally solved in version 6 – there are literally hundreds of leagues to pick from, from national teams to US leagues and all the South American soccer giants to the Champions and Europa Leagues.

FotMob is divided into roughly 4 parts – Livescore, Table, Round and News. In the default settings, you’ll get information for all teams/leagues, but if you hit Filter leagues under the menu options, you’ll be able to uncheck the leagues and teams you aren’t interested in. This makes FotMob a much more manageable app.

As you probably can guess, FotMob's Livescore lets you follow live matches that are currently in progress. Table shows you league standings, Round shows you matches and results, and News, obviously enough, shows you the latest information on your teams. By clicking around in each of these options, you’ll find more features, such as the ability to comment on matches or share news stories.

FotMob is a great app. Any soccer fan would be mad to leave the house without it!

Fantasy Football '11 are great choices for draft management. If you want the official Fantasy Football app from ESPN though, go with ESPN Fantasy Football 2011.

ESPN Fantasy Football 2011 is a great multiple team management app. Not only can you manage multiple teams, you can also manage multiple leagues. Real-time updates are also the name of the game with ESPN Fantasy Football 2011, letting you keep track of who's been injured or substituted and when. ESPN Fantasy Football 2011 will also give you real-time scoring updates.

In addition, this app's packed with news, videos and tweets direct from ESPN's Fantasy Football analysts. There's even a league specific message board where you can post messages and interact with other Fantasy Footballers.

Note that this app requires you to have an ESPN Fantasy Football team, and it only works for 2011 teams. Any teams you created in the past have not been saved, since this app supports 2011 teams only.

GolfCompanion turns your mobile phone into a personal golfing assistant. It not only acts a digital scorecard, but can also be used to analyze your performances before, during, and after rounds.

Using GolfCompanion is a fairly effortless process, thanks to an intuitive user interface. You start by selecting 'New round' from the main menu and the program allows you to download the details of one of more than 20,000 different courses around the World. If the course you're playing isn't there then you can add the details yourself (entering yardages, handicaps, par values, etc. yourself).

Once you've selected the course that you're playing, you need to add a player profile. Here you just enter some basic details, such as the name of the player, gender, etc. You can have up to four player profiles stored in GolfCompanion at one time. Once all this info is entered, you simply use the program as a conventional scorecard, only this time you type the numbers instead of penciling them in.

The great thing about GolfCompanion is that it can record data such as number of putts, fairways hits, strokes, etc. and use this information to generate stats. These can be viewed in the form of graphs for each player, so you can all monitor your progress during or after a round. The stats are all stored, so you can get a full statistical overview of all the rounds you've played over time.

Hopefully in future versions of GolfCompanion, the program will let you record even more data. For instance, I'd like to have the option of adding notes about a particular hole, to remind me of the mistakes I made last time. Perhaps also the app will eventually integrate photo and video support for detailed realizations of courses, though I'm sure this is a long way off.

Even as it stands though, GolfCompanion makes for an ideal compliment for any golf bag.

The application contains lots of data about the current season. Moto+GP Live 2011 displays details of all the riders and their bikes, including up-to-date statistics about their performances this year. There's also information about every race track in the 2011 season, including track measurements, records, race dates, etc.

Moto+GP Live 2011 is ideal for following races live if you're not able to get near a TV. The app offers live text commentary of every race, with in-race comments from journalists and pundits from around the world. You can follow the latest news in between races as well through Moto+GP Live 2011's news service. There's no video content in the app though, which is a little disappointing.

The design of Moto+GP Live 2011 looks very attractive, with lots of smart icons, stylish menu backgrounds and up-to-date rider and bike photography. However, the physical layout of the menu system is something we think could be tweaked a bit.

For example, when viewing details of a rider, and you click the team icon, you'd think Moto+GP Live 2011 would show you details of his car, but it generally shows a different team. Also, the rider and team data is missing as an option in the main menu (i.e. the one that appears when you click the Menu hardware key). Plus, clicking a rider in the bottom window of the main menu in Moto+GP Live 2011 (the Ranking section) takes you to the full list of riders rather than the one you tapped.

Overall though, Moto+GP Live 2011 makes for a handy way to keep up to speed with every twist and turn in the Moto GP season.

World Cup Mobile 2006 is packed with features which will have fair-weather fans and statos alike pleased to show it off to friends. Locked inside a smart user-interface, the program contains page after page of football trivia and data on topics including team histories, previous years’ results, world rankings and even Peter Shilton.

Of course, the most important factor in a program of this type is its presentation of facts about this year’s tournament, teams’ current standings and the latest results. World Cup Mobile’s simple interface makes it easy to navigate through the group stages, with a clear and well designed snapshot of the current group standings. If you prefer, you can select the ‘Schedule’ view and browse through the up-coming matches, listed with kick-off time and location. Further links from this view provide info about each side as well as the German host city and its stadium.

Statistics about the current standings are updated via a snappy one-click update system. After a couple of dialog boxes, World Cup Mobile connects to Resco’s servers and immediately downloads the latest results (including goals, goal-scorers, red or yellow cards and, after the group stages, schedule updates). Well, this is what it does in theory anyway. In practice, we found it difficult to successfully update the program’s databases, due to repeated ‘unspecified’ and ‘corrupt’ errors. On checking Resco’s support message-boards, it seems that we weren’t the only users complaining of poor update-quality. Resco have yet to respond to these messages, which suggests a disappointing lack of focus on customer support. So far, we’ve managed to successfully update once, after attempting about 15 times – not a good average.

World Cup Mobile offers the best overall quality of any of the companion programs on offer for this year’s finals. We were highly impressed with its simplicity, its wealth of information about the contest and what looked like a promising update system. Even though this most attractive feature didn’t perform as well as we expected was disappointing, it’s not the end of the world. Resco has made it possible to update results manually, possibly because they thought their servers might be over-loaded by the huge level of interest in this year’s World Cup. While not the perfect solution, it does allow your phone to stay up to date with the contest: you can even pretend that England win all their games!

Using the RWC 2011 app is very straightforward thanks to a well organized menu navigation system. There are separate tabs for News, Tournament information, a Match Centre (where you'll find all the live coverage), Video and a Fan Zone.

The RWC 2011 app has enough information to satisfy even the most enthusiastic rugby fan. News is updated very regularly and can be filtered by team. The Tournament section is loaded with stats and player profiles for all teams. There's lots of video highlights from this year's tournament as well as past World Cups.

The Match Centre is the place to go to in the RWC 2011 app if you can't get to watch World Cup matches on TV. Besides offering live text commentary of every match, this area of the app gives all time head-to-head stats, plus details of recent matches between the teams in question.

It's worth mentioning the fan zone in the RWC 2011 app. There are some interesting features, such as a guide to the stadiums, details of what's on in New Zealand, and a section where you can submit questions for professional rugby players to answer, which they do via video clips.

Another nice thing about the Official RWC 2011 app is that it detects your location and adjusts all fixture times to your local time zone, saving you from having to calculate time differences yourself.

The Official RWC 2011 app is generally very slick and looks great (if you don't mind seeing lots of adverts for the sponsor). However, for some reason there are no player photos on some of the team profile pages. Also, you should bear in mind that you'll need an internet connection in order to see anything on the RWC 2011 app.

If you're interested in following this year's tournament, the RWC 2011 app makes for a great pocket-sized companion.
