Format Factory's supported formats include WMV, AVI, MPG, MP3, WMA, AAC, JPG, PNG, GIF, and many more. Better still, Format Factory supports media formats used by most major portable devices, including PSP and iPhone.

The app is very easy to use, although it does have a slightly unintuitive interface. Format Factory's file browser doesn't appear until you select the target format, which is a bit weird, but as long as you know this it's no problem. You can select individual files to convert, or complete folders, and also tweak some basic conversion settings.

Format Factory isn't particularly original but what makes it really useful is that it handles images as well as audio and video. Most converters like this only handle audio and video, so adding images to the mix gives it an edge, especially considering it's free. We also like the Audio Joiner in Format Factory, which allows you to take two separate clips, join them together and then convert them. It would've been nice to have preset profiles for mobile conversions, but you can't always have it all in a free app!

As video apps go, Total Video Converter handles bunches of formats. Not only can it convert between various file formats, it also can process videos for use on a multitude of mobile devices, for burning to DVD or uploading to the web. It also makes adding files for conversion very easy, with a nice, fluid drag & drop feature.

Total Video Converter is also loaded with extra tools. There’s a basic video editor, a player, screenshot tool, game recorder and more. All of these tools are available by clicking on the main interface and don’t need a separate download.

Unfortunately, Total Video Converter is not a pleasant piece of software to use. It feels rough and frequently crashes, especially when you try to use the video editing tools. It’s not very attractive, and the interface is buggy – sometimes the buttons don’t even show up correctly.

When Total Video Converter does work, it’s fast, but it’s just so buggy that it doesn’t seem worth the effort. It’s frustrating and unintuitive, and although the help documentation does seem complete, using the app is so exasperating that we’d be surprised if you even made it that far.

First impressions count, but Quick Media Converter doesn't make a good one. Despite favorable reviews of previous versions, first contact with the program revealed a cluttered interface and terrible translation. Could Quick Media Converter redeem itself?

Admittedly, when we took a longer look at the interface, it began to make more sense. There are two modes: Easy and Expert. Drag and drop your files to add them to Quick Media Converter's list, or use the buttons on the left. Choose your target format from the icons at the top of the program, tweak the settings (if necessary), pick a save directory and off you go.

Quick Media Converter has plenty of good points - conversions were fast, there's a preview window, and more experienced users will appreciate the editing options in Expert. Unfortunately, Quick Media Converter also crashed frequently and you have to specify the save directory separately every time you convert.

In all, when Quick Media Converter converted a video, it did so well. It has a great selection of formats and the converted videos were good quality. That said, that's simply not enough to excuse its weak points, and it's hard to use it without thinking of the hundreds of other converters out there that do the same job, but better.

Although Sothink DVD Movie Maker's configuration options aren't very advanced, they cover the basics. You can choose PAL or NTSC encoding and the size of the target DVD disc, but you won't find much more under Options. Even so, the conversion/burning is quick and efficient, and Sothink DVD Movie Maker lets you know how long the process will take.
