To play, you have to sign up for a free EA account, which then allows you to install a browser plug-in and install the game. You always start from your browser in the Battlefield Heroes homepage, from where the game is launched. The only irritating thing about it is that you can't play it in windowed mode, which is unusual for an online game.

Choose and customize your player, from a variety of body types and categories, like soldier and gunner. Each Battlefield Heroes player type has different abilities, so your choice depends on how you like to play the game. While it's free, you can pay for credits that give you more weaponry or clothes.

Battlefield Heroes is easy to play, and like a role playing game you gain experience as you play. This means when you start a game you'll be sent to a game where the other players are of a similar level to you. There are different game modes and play areas, although they all look pretty similar. The graphical style is good, and the sound is great too. Battlefield Heroes is not a subtle game, but based on fast paced action, dying and respawning.

Bright and bold, Battlefield Heroes is a great piece of multiplayer action that is highly recommended.

Once registered and signed in, you have to give yourself a street name, choose a car, and then you're off. The Fast & The Furious is essentially a statistics based role playing game, with street racing stuck on top. You race to win points, so you can tune up your car, and beat better opponents.

The focus is on tuning, not racing, as this isn't an action game. Drag races are animated, but you can choose to click past them and just get the result. It's a bit like Need For Speed, but without the driving.

As you win The Fast & The Furious races you increase your skill and so on, but you also increase Police attention. Once that's over 50%, you are likely to be thrown in to jail unless you wait for the heat to cool off. What this means is that you cannot play The Fast & The Furious constantly, clicking through races to increase your XP and stats, as the game forces you to wait. There are premium options that allow you to spend your way out of the waiting game, however.

If you enjoy this type of numbers game, there appears to be a reasonably large community to interact with, but nothing really stands out in The Fast & The Furious to make it extra special. The lack of real action makes it pretty dull, unless you get addicted to the mindless RPG grinding.

The Fast & The Furious is a relatively simple online RPG, based around the exiting sport of street racing, but without any of the adrenaline rushes.

Unlike Quake Live, for example, Operation7 is not an upfront shooter with a fun emphasis, but rather a serious game with a focus on realism and "one shot kills", which favor the pro-sniper style gamer. In this sense, it's a purification of a certain style of gameplay people either love or hate.

The one-shot-kill aspect might put some players off, but it makes Operation7 a much more tactical game than many. It's necessary to try to coordinate gameplay - using your radar - with teammates to take out the opposing sides. New players, and especially rookie FPS players, can expect a steep learning curve and lots of surprise deaths when they start out with Operation7.

Graphically, Operation7 is acceptable, with some nice touches, but it won't amaze. The sound is impressive, with effects like deafness after nearby explosions, as well as pleasingly noisy guns. The initial Operation7 installation and registration process is fairly lengthy, and to use the homepage you'll need a Firefox plugin. Some of the voice-overs are a little too macho.

Ideal for skilled gamers, Operation 7 is an effective and realistic online experience.

There are hundreds of games like this online. The theme and visuals are almost irrelevant. Terminator Salvation requires you to constantly level up, by completing missions and fights. These are both done simply by clicking and waiting. To begin with, waiting times are short, but they increase as you progress.

Starting Terminator Salvation requires you to mindlessly click on an 'Execute Mission' button until you have gained rank in 8 different categories. Completing missions gains you experience and rewards, while unlocking new mission areas. The gameply itself is really suitable only if you want something to play 'in the background'. There is really nothing more to it than repeated clicking, with no action at all.

Social online games like Farmville weave complex social networks, and allow you to see the fruits of your clicking and waiting. In contrast, Terminator Salvation just offers you numbers and grind. While Arnie got to roam around earth blowing stuff up, Terminator Salvation offers you no such excitement.

Terminator Salvation is online 'strategy' by numbers, with little imagination, and dull presentation.

Bitefight's creatures are quite different, with some horrendously vicious werewolves that hunt only one thing - vampires. And no, these are not the vampires such as The Count in Sesame Street - they're equally nasty and vicious ones like in The Lost Boys. The tagline of Bitefight is "The struggle between Vampires and Werewolves has rampaged for centuries. It's your destiny to decide this battle!" and that just about sums it up.

It's at least an original premise but the game itself fails to deliver on many counts. The game involves roam across the city looking for new victims, beating them up and then building yourself an impregnable empire. Through this, you earn money which you can also use to buy safehouses and Manhunts and fighting other players reward you with money. The more experience you have, the more levels you climb. The problem is, the game is slow paced and wandering around finding people to savage takes ages whether you're vampire or werewolf.

Bitefight might sound like a Mike Tyson boxing game but in reality, it's quite a poor vampire-werewolf themed game that could do with a lot more depth and challenge to make it worthwhile.

Success is based on managing your money well - buying the right people for the right crimes, attacks or shady business. Prostitution, protection and looting are the order of the day.

The game is played by navigating around the site after a quick registration, you have to hire personnel and start your illegal empire, fighting against other users. Doing this is hardly intuitive, but using the FAQ and some experimentation, you'll get the idea.

The screens have the feel of 1930s America, and if you enjoy action free management games, this will be your kind of game.

Quake Live is a beta version, and although extremely popular, there are always plenty of games to join. You have to register with a valid email address, but it's pretty painless. Once you're in, and have run the installer, you'll be taken through a really smooth tutorial. This is obligatory, partly as more Quake Live data will be downloaded as you play, and partly as it tests your skill so you get online games against similar players.

With the tutorial over, getting into a Quake Live game is easy. The maps are brilliant, it moves smoothly, the sound effects are perfect. The focus is on fun - it's not graphically violent, and many of the character models are quite silly - and it really is a breath of fresh air. The community features are good. You can find and invite friends easily, and join them in games. There are also extensive leaderboards, to see how great you are compared to your friends, or the entire world.

It may look a bit old, and if you're a veteran, you might find the tutorial a chore, but it's such an enjoyable game to play, it's hard to hold this against Quake Live.

Your main objective in the game will be to collect raw materials for your company, as this is the only way to generate energy and therefore become ruler of the universe.

But if what you want is some action, go ahead and click on the Play button.

Graphics are quite basic, but they do the trick. Now all you have to do is travel around space (clicking on the screen with your mouse – cursor keys don't work) and collect raw material, while you gain experience by killing enemy ships and other space creatures.

Experience points can also be earned by doing quests.

The connectivity issues I had while testing the game won't help either.
