CourseForum is designed at creating a forum of debate around subjects studied and in the developer's own words, about "creating, sharing and talking about ideas, Q&A, course notes, research, student portfolios, project work, and more".

You can setup up a project very quickly with CourseForum. A setup wizard takes you through all the initial steps you need to get going. Everything is done within your web browser meaning that students don't need to use a third party application. They can access the course simple from a web address that you provide although you can setup your own server if you want. There are separate wizards depending on whether you want to setup or devise a group project, lesson plan or individual student project.

Tracking of students is made as easy as possible via an online tracking tool per unit completed. However, although initial setup of CourseForum is straightforward, administration and especially switching to your own server (although not essential) may be quite intimidating for beginners.

CourseForum is an interesting online learning tool that has something for both students and educators.

Totally Free Teacher Tools is a package of 4 applications - Giftwiz, The Hat, Cool Timer and Text Tally. Giftwiz chooses gift givers and recipients from a list of name (perfect for Secret Santa!), The Hat randomly picks names, Cool Timer is a timer and Text Tally counts words, letters and lines. All of the Totally Free Teacher Tools are basic and none are particularly attractive, but even so, they work well and could definitely be of use in the classroom or elsewhere.

Text Tally is the weakest of the Totally Free Teacher Tools. It is accurate and monitors the clipboard, but has few options and isn't revolutionary. The rest of the tools, however, are surprisingly configurable and do a great job. Giftwiz and The Hat are quite similar - Giftwiz picks names for exchanging gifts, while The Hat randomly picks names from a "hat" - great for raffles and competitions. Both have cute animations and are easy to use. The final tool is Cool Timer, a basic-looking timer, countdown and stopwatch that actually hides great options - perfect for quizzes and examinations!

It has to be admitted that Wondershare QuizCreator has a relatively small target public. If you are a teacher, instructor or education provider, however, it has all the potential to be a really powerful tool. Wondershare QuizCreator is basically a comprehensive quiz wizard. You'll have to think up the questions yourself, but as long as you have the material, the program will help you arrange and publish it - either to the QuizCreator Quiz Management System website, on the Internet as a flash quiz, an AICC/SCORM package for learning management systems, an EXE file, to CD or, finally, as a Word or Excel document.

Creating the quiz itself couldn't be easier with Wondershare QuizCreator. You pick the quiz type - multiple choice, fill in blanks, essays, etc. - and write the questions and answer options. Teach2000 is like a personal tutor that helps you memorize a foreign language, topography or even important historical facts and dates. It's aimed at students mainly who want to get ahead in their exams or classwork. The program has a quick start wizard that takes you through everything from scratch. It sets you a number of texts based on what you want to remember such as symbols, text or statistics. The program tests your memory by asking you to repeat whatever you've read several times until the number or words are drilled into your head. One good thing is that the program is not limited by language - it can handle phrases and texts in twelve different languages. It's also a very good way to improve your grammar (at least in English anyway) as it tests your ability to remember grammatical rules with a multiple choice test. The program is completely free and very fast at administration tests and changing from one to another. In case you want to use the tests outside of your PC, you can also print out tests and flashcards which could be useful in a classroom environment too.

A fast and innovative way to try and improve your memory although I bet I still forget my keys at least once this week even after using this.

The secret of it's success was to harness the power of user general knowledge via an extremely easy to use and read interface - a wiki. MediaWiki is a small package which contains everything you need to create your own wiki on any subject you choose. MediaWiki is already being used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation including the MediaWiki developer site.

MediaWiki is basically a free server-based software which is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). If you're intent on creating a big or popular wiki don't worry - it's designed to be run on a large server farm for a website that gets millions of hits per day. MediaWiki uses PHP to process and display data stored in its MySQL database. However, it requires no SQL database knowledge on your part and pages use MediaWiki's wikitext format, so that users without knowledge of XHTML or CSS can edit them easily.

MediaWiki contains everything you need to get up and running with your own no matter how big or small your project.

MemoryLifter is a flashcard utility that helps you create thematic collections of cards and use them to revise any subject in a more entertaining way – at least more than just learning a long list of words or numbers by heart. The program keeps track of your progress and generates statistics with your results.

Each flashcard in MemoryLifter contains a question and its correspondent answer, and can also include multimedia material (images, videos and sounds). The program comes with one set you can use as example, but the aim of the program is to allow you to create customized flashcard sets that are adapted to your needs and personal knowledge.

In general terms, MemoryLifter works great as a flashcard player, but the flashcard editor could be improved a bit because it's not as intuitive and easy to use as I expect from a program.

With MemoryLifter you can create and use your own personal sets of flashcards to revise any topic.

The program is divided into two main applications: a server, which is the one the teacher uses to create the test, and the client, launched by the students who are taking it. Questions can be multiple-choice and have attached images, but unfortunately they must be in SVG format (and not other more popular formats such as JPG or BMP). You can also assign different difficulty degrees to questions and even set the time limit to answer each of them.

Once the server is up and running, the clients (students) can connect to it and begin the test. The teacher will then be able to track their progress and correct their answers on the fly, so that they can receive their grades upon finishing the test.

Generally speaking the whole system works fine but it's not that easy to use. We strongly recommend to read documentation thoroughly if you want to take full advantage of the program's functions. Also, I missed having some kind of sample database or questions to get you started, instead of having to create everything from scratch right from the beginning.

A full-featured yet complicated tool to create all sorts of exams.
