POP Peeper 3.2 - Get alerts whenever you receive new mail

If you've got multiple e-mail accounts then keeping track of what you are receiving can be an absolute nightmare involving multiple browsers and lots of confusion.

A far better solution is something like POP Peeper which is an easy to use email notifier that runs in Windows task bar and alerts you when you have new email on POP3, IMAP, Windows LiveMail, Yahoo, GMail, Mail.com, MyWay, Excite, Lycos.com, RediffMail, Juno and NetZero accounts. The fact that it supports so many webmail accounts makes this a really attractive app although in reality, you may find that it doesn't detect mail until considerably after it has arrived in your account, if at all - especially with Windows Live Mail. However, it does allow you to send e-mail directly from POP Peeper and use the address book to email your frequently used contacts. Messages can be viewed in both HTML and plain text although newsletters and other mail with heavy graphics won't display properly in plain text. One major bonus is that POP Peeper is so small that it can be can be run from a portable device and password protected which means that it's fairly secure and is a decent solution for anyone on the move a lot.

Although it doesn't give you full control over your e-mail accounts, and may not even work properly with all webmail accoutns, this is worth trying if you have multiple e-mail accounts.

GmailAssistant 1.0 - Email notifier for multiple Gmail accounts

If you have several Gmail accounts you need to check on a daily basis, you probably spend too much time logging on the Gmail website. GmailAssistant can save you many of these visits by checking your accounts for new messages automatically.

GmailAssistant has a few positive elements: it's a standalone executable file that can be carried and launched anywhere; it leaves no traces on the host system; and finally, it supports several simultaneous accounts. Plus it's very easy to configure and use, and as it connects to your Gmail account using IMAP over SSL, it's completely safe. By the way, this last point means you must have IMAP access enabled on your Gmail account - otherwise the program won't work.

On the downside, GmailAssistant has also some serious drawbacks: apparently there's no way to set a time interval to check your mailboxes for new messages and, even worse, configuration details aren't automatically saved. This means that all your account data must be manually saved to a file from the program itself in order to be able to use them again next time you launch GmailAssistant.

With GmailAssistant you can automatically check several Gmail accounts and receive alerts whenever there are new messages. Unfortunately configuration settings must be saved manually which is a bit of a pain.

GetMail for Hotmail 4.00 - Resend Hotmail messages to other accounts

GetMail for Hotmail is an email forwarding program that aims to address the lack of a POP3 server for Hotmail. This means that you can automatically setup Hotmail to forward your e-mails to other addresses. If you use GetMail For Hotmail with other third party POP3 tools such as FreePOPS or YPOPS you can also forward from AOL, Yahoo and many other webmail email accounts.

This makes it particularly useful for mass migrating all your e-mail to Gmail but also to continue forwarding e-mail received in your old accounts. For those that wish to forward to other POP accounts, the developers have created a list of SMTP servers. GetMail for Hotmail can even forward e-mail to your Blackberry. It's SSL compatible and can run as a Windows service.

This is an excellent program that's long overdue. As many more people move from Hotmail to other e-mail accounts, this will become an increasingly popular program.

Gmail Notifier 1.0 Beta - Check your Gmail messages without opening your browser

Gmail Notifier enables you to check your Gmail account right from the system tray, that is, without having to visit the Gmail webpage. Although this idea seems quite convenient at first sight, the truth is that I found this little app a bit disappointing.

First, you can only check one account, while other similar notifiers such as Gmail Manager have support for multiple Gmail accounts. Also, Gmail Notifier only checks your mailbox when you tell it to do so, as there's no automatic check feature included.

On the upside, the program shows message snippets every time you check email, so you can decide if it's worth opening the browser to read them or not. It can also set Gmail as your default email application to open email links online.

Gdow 1.020070401 - Desktop notifier for Gmail messages

With Gmail becoming so popular, there's now several Gmail notifiers out there promising to deliver mail to your desktop. Gdow is certainly one of the most flexible I've used allowing you to configure exactly how you want your mail delivered.

Once a new message has arrived in your Gmail inbox, you can select how you want Gdow to deliver it to your desktop. The choices are pop-up window or a warning bubble and these can be formatted in Windows XP style or a simple transparent window. The program sits quietly in your system tray and can be easily deactivated by right clicking on it and switching off the notifications.

What I like is that you can configure the notifications as you like them. You can change the background colour, the font used, the width and the maximum height of the notification boxes.
If the message is too big, the message intelligently autoscrolls along your screen. You can even adjust the transparency of the window. It also supports "Gmail for your domain" which is great if you get your website mail delivered to your Gmail.

Overall, this is one of the best notifiers I've used for Gmail with only downside being that the notifications often lag quite some time behind the actual arrival of the mail.

Poppy 5.8.1 - Mail notifier for your POP3 server

Poppy for Windows is a small utility that you can use on your Windows PC. It will notify you when you have mail waiting on the POP3 server of your Internet provider (or Internet providers). Poppy can check multiple POP3 servers and check for new messages at regular time intervals.

Poppy needs a working internet connection and is typically used in combination with an ‘always on’ internet connection, such as a cable or DSL connection. It can be used with a dial-up connection, but that is not very effective.

Once you have started Poppy, you will see an icon in the so-called system tray or taskbar notification area. When Poppy detects that mail is available on any of the configured POP3 servers, it will let you know by changing the taskbar icon. Optionally, Poppy can also play a sound, execute an external program (like your e-mail program) or show a popup window containing a notification message.

In addition to it’s main purpose, which is e-mail notification, it can also display the headers of individual e-mail messages, preview the e-mail message source and delete individual messages from the POP3 server.

The dialog that is used to display the headers of e-mail messages, uses selection rule to determine which e-mail messages should be selected. Once these messages are selected, you can delete them from the POP3 server. The selection rules are configured using the Options dialog. This feature is especially helpfull when you receive SPAM messages that you quickly want to delete from the POP3 server.
