NoNameScript is an enhancement for the IRC client mIRC that aims to satisfy both novice and experienced users.

The script basically adds a series of features to make communicating with your friends easier and more comfortable but with a focus on usability rather than useless features such as "nukers". For instance, there's a simple activity status option with both a pager and log to log your activity. Upcoming events are displayed in a balloon and you've got a customisable toolbar with e-mail checker and lag graph. It's also a solid choice for gamers since it features game support for launching games simply bu clicking on an IP address and selecting a server.

There's a theme editor to givemIRC a different look although when you've used it, you might find that it takes some time to relearn how to use the client because it moves things around so much. In addition to all this, you have a clipboard editor, blacklister, clone scanner, alarm timer, kick/ban/dcc histories and much more.

Any mIRC fan will find something to please in this script although changing the appearance may leave you with more headaches than benefits.

IceChat is an IRC ( Internet Relay Chat) program. It is used to connect to IRC Servers and chat in channels with other IRC Users. You can connect IceChat to an unlimited number of servers, all in one session (No need to start multiple copies of IceChat)

The developers of DMDirc say they were motivated by a need to develop a truly decent IRC client for Linux.

Fortunately for Windows users, they decided to base it on Java meaning this works across both platforms - in fact any that runs Java. The program works by listing all the available IRC servers on the left hand side of the very simple interface including the name of each channel. On the right side, you have a compilation of all the aliases that are available. That's about all there is to it, which is good in that it's extremely simple, but bad in that it's also extremely limited. There are no options of conference chats, video conferencing or sending files which are basic in most IRC clients. About the most customization you can do is change the colour and fonts of the text plus a few more simple commands which are available through the help command. That said, the program is going though rapid evolution and development at the moment and it now features new launchers which give the client the ability to update itself via the updater, a URL Handler which allows adding support for non-http links and a much improved plugin system.

Very basic although easy to use, this is probably more attractive to Linux users than Windows fans.

Coccinella is an open source jabber client with a nice set of features.

Coupled with a whiteboard, Coccinella becomes a useful tool to chat and work on projects with other people on a network. Although it won't let you use multiple accounts, the client is highly flexible, and will allow you to connect to any Jabber/XMPP server, including popular IM clients like MSN Messenger, ICQ and even Google Talk. However you won't be able to make use of the VoIP capabilities and webcam support of these IM services, as Coccinella does not handle them.

The client's interface is simple and uncluttered and you can keep all your messages in an inbox, making them easy to browse by subject, sender or date. Coccinella also offers file transfers, and you can choose your own avatars. Apart from the decent collection of emoticons, you can also import new ones if you have them in jisp format.

The whiteboard is really fun to use and easy to share with as many other users as you want. Coccinella also offers up connections to chatrooms, something we've never really been convinced of, but at least, for people interested, it's there.

Coccinella is a good open source jabber client with a whiteboard and loads of emoticons that can connect to any server. A recommended IM tool.

X-Chat has two good features of usability: colored nicknames and alignment by text as opposed to alignment by nicks. When you read text, it's enough for eyes to notice the colors of nicknames, which they can do when they are focused to somewhere else near, and you may know at once who is writing. Colors are inobtrusive and there just 6 of them—not to burden your short-term memory. And eyes don't have to search for ends of nicknames, they can start reading text at once when text is aligned by the beginning.
