TuneIn Radio takes a different, more conservative approach to streaming music. There are no customizable playlists nor can you choose what artist to listen to at the moment. You can search for artists that are currently playing on a current radio station but you can't choose what song to listen to. This makes TuneIn Radio great for music discovery but won't please those looking for something specific.

The library of radio stations that TuneIn Radio provides is truly staggering. It can look up local radio stations if you allow it to access your location. You can also search by city for local radio stations. There are sections in TuneIn Radio for news, music, talk shows, sports, talk shows, and even podcasts.

The interface of TuneIn Radio is intuitive. Music is broken up into different genres so you can choose a radio station that will play music you're vaguely in the mood for. There's no intelligent playlists so you can't vote or favorite songs. It's also a little disappointing that TuneIn Radio doesn't have any scheduling or recording features, which would be handy for those who can't listen to a program at the moment.

Overall, TuneIn Radio offers an extremely impressive library of radio stations but won't satisfy those looking for on-demand content.

Since its inception, the look of Napster has been improved several times and it now offers an elegant interface through which you can search and purchase music from 99 cents per song or $9.
95 per album. If you're a big music fan however, you'll find it much more economical to subscribe to Napster's premium service for $9. 95 per month, which offers unlimited downloading, 40 commercial-free interactive radio stations and a collection of community features.
These include options to e-mail tracks to friends and share play lists with other Napster users. In fact, this remarkable value for money is probably Napster's major advantage over competitors such as iTunes Music Store which work out considerably more expensive.
The other positive aspects of Napster are that you can preview songs before you buy them, many users say there are tons more songs than on iTunes, there's a community radio station and even an inbox for e-mail.

Of course, the downside is that if you're one of the world's millions of iPod users, you won't be able to transfer Napster tracks to it because the files are in in WMA format.
In fact, you won't be able to transfer them to any portable music player unless they can play Windows Media Player 9 DRM protected files. In addition, the number of times you can copy the files is also limited.
On the plus side, the bit-rate is a healthy 192 Kbs and burning CDs on Napster is really easy, involving just a few button clicks and some simple steps to configure your preferences and there are no limits on how many times you can burn a file.

Overall, Napster has come a long way since its early days in the late 1990s and is a worthy competitor to iTunes. However, if only there was less DRM on their files, it would score much more highly.

Like most of its rivals, Online Radio Tuner is a small, discreet program. It has a variety of skins and excellent configuration options that will let you control everything from sound and recording profiles to Windows Messenger integration and the program's hotkeys. Online Radio Tuner's scheduling options are very impressive and allow you to record almost anything to any scheduling pattern you can imagine.

One bad point about desktop radio tuners is that you are often limited to their selection of stations. Online Radio Tuner is no exception, although there was still plenty of music available. There is an option on Online Radio Tuner to add an URL, but even though we tried different online stations and types of links, we couldn't make it work. Online Radio Tuner has plenty of presets categorized by Broadcast Network, Genre and Region, but not all stations connected easily.

Online Radio Tuner has a lot of good points, but was spoiled by the inability to connect to some stations or add new ones. Users might ultimately find this a little frustrating.

There are plenty of options for streaming internet radio but iHeartRADIO brings something different to the table: local radio stations. There are a ton of major cities listed in iHeartRADIO with most major radio stations available for streaming.

If you don't want to listen to local radio stations, you can also queue up your favorite artists and have a personalized radio station of similar artists. When a track plays, you can like/dislike, which helps iHeartRADIO's music engine to learn more about your musical tastes. It will take while before iHeartRADIO starts generating playlists that appeal to you.

There is also a setting for music discovery that is user adjustable. Users can choose between 'Familiar,' 'Mixed,' and 'Less Familiar' to aid or lessen music discovery. This is handy if you're in the mood for similar artists or if you're feeling adventurous.

The streaming quality of iHeartRADIO isn't bad but it's also not impressive. Competitors like Spotify and even Pandora sound a bit better and less compressed. Still, iHeartRADIO's excellent features and service are more than enough to make up for it.

Overall, iHeartRADIO is one of the best internet radio streaming apps available.

This simple tool lets you tune in to about 2,000 TV channels and 1,500 radio stations, all streaming content on the Internet. They're all classified by countries and can be conveniently selected by using the tree-like structure on the left pane of the program's interface. A double click on the channel's name is enough to start watching or listening. There's also a bookmark system that lets you easily store your favorite TV and radio channels.

Be aware though that the program is far from being perfect. Many channels simply don't work and some others have such a low speed transference that you get a series of fixed frames in a slideshow instead of real video. However, given the large amount of channels available, you may still find some good content – and what's more important, be able to watch it.

Online Media features a really impressive collection of TV channels and radio stations but unfortunately not all of them seem to work.

As I said before, the program features a nice interface, although it only works at its best when it's maximized. If not, windows and boxes don't resize properly and information overlaps.

On the upside, the program enables you to add your own favourite radio stations (so you'll be sure they'll work) and supports stream recording right to MP3 files.

Back in the days of cassette tapes, it was much easier to record songs played over the radio. Nowadays, it's a bit more difficult but RadioZilla aims to make radio recording simpler for the digital age.

Open up RadioZilla and you'll see a list of music genres on the left side. Each one expands to become more specific. There is no search. Click on a radio station that looks good and RadioZilla will begin streaming. If you hear a song that catches your fancy, you can hit the red recording button or hit the "save" button, which detects when a song ends and will stop recording automatically.

Unfortunately RadioZilla is a big headache to use. Many, if not most, of its radio stations simply do not work. There is no error message other than "cannot connect." Radio stations are also sorted improperly. Stations in the 'Classical' section feature stations that played classic rock and romantic love songs instead of classical music from the romantic era.

Overall, RadioZilla is a great idea with poor execution. With streaming services like Spotify, there's really no need to record a low quality song from a radio feed.

That's where IRadio comes in - an excellent and good looking podcast ripper that tracks broadcasts. Unfortunately, it seems fairly limited in terms of the broadcasts it can track which are mainly ShoutCast and Live365 streams. However, this still comprises thousands of stations that allow you to initiate and record streams. The program tags your track according to their meta data but it can only save them as Mp3 files which is not a problem unless you need them in WAV or a custom format. There's also a burning option so you can save streams directly to CD although this requires an upgrade to the full version. The problem again though is that a lot of what you download is from Podcasts that you're forced to accept that you wouldn't necessarily ordinarilly listen to.

This is a sleek and powerful podcast ripper but it requires access to a much wider range of stations and channels before it will really appeal.

Web apps like Pandora and Last.fm are incredibly popular when it comes to discovering new music. Now Mixtape joins in as a sleep looking if simple desktop app.

Mixtape presents a ribbon of nice looking images that represent different playlists. Roll your mouse over each image to read the playlist's title and to see the name of the playlist creator. If you click on the playlist, the music will start immediately. You can pause or opt to skip it in favor of the next song on the playlist. In addition, you can star songs you like, as well as heart entire playlists you think are awesome. You can even purchase individual tracks you like on iTunes with a quick click within the app.

As an added bonus, you can connect your 8tracks account with Mixtape for even further personalization.

Some users might get annoyed that you can't change the size of the app, as it's relatively small. There's also no actual search box integrated into the app. You can search by genres easily enough, but not by specific songs. These are minor complaints though, given how nicely stream-lined the Mixtape app happens to be.

Mixtape is a great alternative to some of the other popular music streaming and discovery services online.
