When you first run RogueKiller, it will search for services and processes that may be hidden on your computer. It scans quickly and will rapidly quarantine anything suspicious.

Once the scan has been completed, RogueKiller will delete the files. It's best to look at the text reports generated by the app though, to make sure everything picked up by RogueKiller is in fact, harmful. In our tests, RogueKiller was very aggressive, taking innocuous programs for malicious ones. Overall, you should be very comfortable with system processes and the inner workings of Windows to safely use the program.

The other features of the program allow RogueKiller to undo the damage caused by fake antivirus tools, such as repairing host files, proxies, DNS and shortcuts. You'll even be able to read the Roguekiller developer's opinions on why you most likely got infected.

RogueKiller is a straightforward, minimalist app that detects rogueware of all kinds. It's not for beginners though.

If you are security conscious and want to make sure that files you delete stay deleted and cannot be found again Hardwipe is for you.. This can give you piece of mind if you are selling or throwing out an old computer, meaning no one can search and old drive for personal data or files.

There are three main functions in Hardwipe. You can wipe specific files, wipe a whole drive, or clean your free hard drive space. You can choose high or low priority, which will use more or less system resources, and choose which type of data wiping you want. The selection of data wiping algorithms is pretty much the same you'll see in any app like this. You can perform a simple data-randomizing wipe all the way up to a 35-pass deletion, which is extremely secure.

Hardwipe does what it claims, and is easy to use. If your PC is shared and the normal log in has Administrator rights, be aware that Hardwipe can do some major damage if used maliciously or carelessly. We'd recommend only installing Hardwipe on an account that requires and Administrator log in! This secure data deletion program is not a cleaning app - for basic PC spring cleaning we'd recommend CCleaner.

The protagonist of Abobo's Big Adventure is Abobo, one of the bosses from another popular NES game, Double Dragon. Ironically, Abobo sees his son get kidnapped by the thugs who protected him in other games.

Abobo's Big Adventure is, above all, a tribute to classic titles. You can trace its technical side to Super Mario Brothers, Double Dragon, Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda. The game unapologetically copies settings, characters and sounds. It's a respectful tribute too though, with good taste and all the necessary modern touches included.

The mechanics also remain anchored in the past. Abobo's Big Adventure is a combination of arcade games, platformers and other classical genres, but it also adds new elements such as special attacks, mini games and achievements to give it variety and enduring gameplay.

Abobo's Big Adventure is a great free game that brings back memories of simpler graphics and everyone's favorite older consoles.

The Quintessential name has been around for many years, and this 5.0 version shows its age in both good and bad ways. As an alternative to iTunes, it doesn't have a dedicated podcast area, but its playback options are a little better. The best example of this is the play queue panel, which can be opened to create an on the fly playlist, which is great for parties.

Otherwise, while some users may like changing the appearance, this doesn't add to the functionality, which is lacking in some areas. The main problem is the equalizer. For people who like to tweak their bass Quintessential Player's equalizer will be hopeless, as it hardly effects the sound at all. The visualizations that come with it are pretty old school, and look really our of date even when compared to those in Windows Media Player.

While this 5.0 version will no doubt be updated over time, currently it seems much less stable than its established peers and is slightly buggy. It is also fairly resource hungry. If you're a fan of customization it's definitely an option, but it's hard to see an iTunes user migrating to Quintessential Player at the moment.

One of the main attractions of PicturesToExe Deluxe is the huge variety of sharing methods it offers users. Whether you want to save as an .EXE, publish online, burn to HD disc or even view on a Mac, this app will allow you to do it. As a slideshow creator, PicturesToExe Deluxe is quite good - you can add effects, music, buttons or even animation - and it supports drag and drop, which makes editing easy. Animation and customization options are also clearly labeled.

The PicturesToExe Deluxe interface is standard for this type of app - file explorer on the left, images in the middle, preview on the right and the slideshow beneath. Apart from the great sharing options, PicturesToExe Deluxe has some good advanced options, for both the program and the slideshow customization. It doesn't have the fanciest or most fun effects I have ever seen, but many users will be more than happy with the slightly more sober and very accessible slideshows it produces.

Although there are a number of skins for the J. River Media Center, none of them particularly help in the looks department. What is attractive, however, is the variety of viewing modes available: the four screen options available will take you from quick access to more theater-like viewing for movies and television. Playback quality is good, especially for audio, and larger screen options don't compromise viewing.

J. River Media Center has all the features you would expect from a modern player. As well as the standard audio, video and images, you can also subscribe to and manage podcasts, burn and rip CDs, sync with handheld devices, control via remote control, stream from the 'net and connect to high definition television (although to do this you'll need a tuner). Add this to J. River Media Center's extensive organizational, tagging and management abilities and J. River Media Center begins to look like a serious threat to other multimedia players.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the J. River Media Center is just a pretty face. It also has a fully functional browser, allowing you to search for information related to your music - and more - on the internet. Tech fans won't be disappointed either - J. River Media Center has a huge variety of configuration options ranging from the esthetic to the advanced, including a DSP (digital signal processor) studio for tweaking your audio, a media editor and audio recorder.

Often, a major problem with programs that try to do a lot is that they overreach and end up compromising quality. Not so with J. River Media Center. In the short time I tested it, the program performed perfectly, was easy to use and gave great quality output. If you just want a program that will play your CDs, you can probably get away with something lighter, but if you are looking for an integral multimedia manager with plenty of options, J. River Media Center might be the program for you.

The program works on any standard Window application. This means that anytime you're on a Open/Save dialog, you can press the correspondent key combination to instantly open the folder where you want to open or save that file. These folders are saved in Dirkey's settings as bookmarks and can be managed from the program's configuration options. Another way to bookmark folders is simply by opening them and pressing Ctrl+Alt plus the number you want to assign to it.

The downside to Dirkey is that it's a bit complicated to set up, plus the fact that you can't customize the keyboard shortcuts (you'll have to stick to the program's defaults, Ctrl plus a number).

PhraseExpress lets you assign customizable keyboard shortcuts to frequently-used text snippets so that you don't have to type them over and over again. The snippets are stored in a neatly organized structure and can be used on any Windows application.

But replacing letter combinations with text fragments is not the only feature in PhraseExpress. You can also set the program to complete words automatically, correct misspelled words, launch programs, extend the Clipboard's functionality and manage your email signatures, among others.

PhraseExpress includes an extended configuration menu where you can adapt it to the smallest detail, so that it suits your needs. But before using it, I'd recommend going over the tutorial the first time you launch the program: it includes a clear, concise explanation about how to use it.

What CLCL does in essence is keep a record of everything you copy, keeping it accessible from a paperclip icon in your system tray. This extended clipboard can also be accessed by pressing ALT+C, where your saved content will be automatically pasted when clicked.

CLCL is a useful little clipboard application that has the benefit of being tiny, as well having lots of configuration options so you can use it in your own way.
