Genuine Fractals is a Photoshop plugin that lets you blowup pictures to sizes you couldn't attain normally. We're glad to see significant improvements in version 5, a real step up from the previous iteration.

Images can now be scaled up 1,000% thanks to a new algorithm, although you'll get excellent results at 500 or 600. We also see big improvements in the interface, which looks much sleeker and blends in particularly well to Photoshop CS3's look. The plugin works faster, 10 times as much claims the developer. You'll find significant upgrades in the tools and features of Genuine Fractals like robust layer support, new sharpening and film grain. The plugin also adds built-in sharpening to improve scaled images.

Most of the new features are a improvement, however we did feel that Genuine Fractals did not handle semi-transparent areas and hard edges as well as we'd expect. The only real drawback of the plugin is its price though. At 143,95 Euros it's a really expensive investment to make just for a plugin.

Version 5 of Genuine Fractals is a significant upgrade with better scaling, more features and a sleeker interface. It doesn't come cheap though.

The developers claim that Wise-FTP can connect to any FTP site which is quite a claim. In tests however, it's proved somewhat hit and miss and didn't seem to connect to anymore servers than most other FTP clients.

The program does feature however a user-friendly drag & drop interface and allows you to edit files and folders directly on the FTP server. It's also able to perform simultaneous transfers plus synchronisation of directories and task planner. It also includes more standard features such as secure file transfer via SFTP and auto-connect if it drops a connection.

Apart from the fact it connects to a wide range of servers, the integrated HTML editor is perhaps the only other stand out feature of Wise FTP enabling you to edit files on a remote system in real-time. Another nice touch is that there is a scheduler which you can use to automate transfers whilst away from your PC.

In summary, there's nothing particularly outstanding about Wise FTP although it would probably be a good start for beginners to FTP file transfers due to it's user-friendly interface and layout.

Videoraptor is an attempt to bring you legally downloadable videos and films for a modest subscription fee.

The program is well presented with an easy to use navigator that lists videos and films by genre and type. You can choose to either search the Videoraptor database or browse the internet and whenever you watch a video - say on YouTube or Google Video, Videoraptor will add it to your Web Video History list. The latter is preferable because the Videoraptor database is quite limited. On the plus side, management of video downloads is very intuitive as you can stop and start downloads at will - all downloads go directly into an easy to access downloads folder button at the foot of the screen. You can also configure the number of search sources the program uses via the edit menu which is useful if you don't want to the program to take-up all your bandwidth - minimising the number of sources reduces the number of hits but also the bandwidth you use. What I like most about the downloads is the web downloader though - instead of using a YouTube downloader or trying to find the temp Flash video on your system, you can store and see at a glance the videos at your disposal.

With plenty of videos to choose from, you certainly won't get bored with Videoraptor but many will no doubt not want to pay any kind of fee simply to have your YouTube and other videos downloaded onto your hard drive.

Creating new passwords every time I register for a online service is getting harder and harder. But before starting to use the same word everywhere and thus compromising my security, I'd rather use a password manager.

Although it might appear like some sort of Communist software, CCCP is actually just a pack of codecs to help just about any video run on your system.

The full title is the "Combined Community Codec Pack". In reality, it's more like a filter pack than a codec pack but the developers say that "filter doesn't begin with C and we wanted a good acronym"! For anyone who understands Russian, the developers also like to point out that the name is also a pun on the Russian name Союз Советских Социалистических Республик, which is transliterated into the Latin alphabet as "Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik", or "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics", abbreviated as "СССР" or "USSR". Anyway, the CCCP codec pack was created to replace the filter packs provided by other groups which simply often did not work properly or broke compatibility for other formats. In reality, it is an extremely powerful Codec pack, playing back effortlessly most popular formats and some unpopular ones too. There are now fiddly options to get it working although if you have other codec packs installed, you may experience some conflicts or significant slowdown in reproduction of your films.

Graph is an open source application used to draw mathematical graphs in a coordinate system. Anyone who wants to draw graphs of functions will find this program useful. The program makes it very easy to visualize a function and paste it into another program. It is also possible to do some mathematical calculations on the functions.

Draw functions

Graph can draw normal functions, parameter functions, and polar functions. You can use a lot of built-in functions, e.g. sin, cos, log, etc. You may specify color, width and line style of the graphs, and the graphs may me limited to an interval. It is also possible to show a circle at the ends indicating open or closed interval.

Interact with other programs

You can save the coordinate system with graphs as an image on disk either as a bitmap (bmp), Potable Network Graphics (png) or metafile (emf). You may also copy the coordinate system into another program, e.g. Microsoft Word, either as a normal image or as an OLE object, which may be edited later by double clicking on it.

A lot of options

While still easy to use Graph has a lot of customization possibilities, e.g. fonts, colors, axes style, grids, etc. The axes, which may by normal or logarithmic, can be placed either by entering specific values, or by moving or zooming with the mouse.

Evaluate

Given an x-coordinate Graph will calculate the function value and the first two derivatives for any given function. Alternatively the function may be traced with the mouse. Graph can also fill a table with evaluated function coordinates in a user specified range. Data from the table can easily be copied into another program, e.g. Excel.

Calculate

Graph can help you calculate the area under a function in a given interval and the distance along the curve between two points on the function. The program can also show the first derivative of a function, and create tangents and normal lines to a function at given coordinates.

Point series and trendlines

You can create series of points with different markers, colors and size. Data for a point series can be imported from other programs, e.g. Microsoft Excel. It is possible to create a line of best fit from the data in a point series, either from one of the built-in models or from a user specified model.

Shadings and labels

Graph can insert shadings used to mark an area related to a function. Shadings may be created with different styles and colors in a user specified interval. In addition to the optional legend used to describe each function, a label may be added anywhere in the system. A label can contain text with different fonts, images and objects created in other programs.

RulesPlayer is not really a player in itself, but rather a graphical interface for MPlayer that has been especially created to make the latter more comfortable to use.

Now, I don't know if MPlayer is that difficult (it doesn't look like it is, according to the screenshots I've seen) but I think this GUI is certainly not helping much. It features a nicely designed interface and really simple usability – something we users should be thankful for – but it's also quite buggy. To begin with, I had problems when using the scroll bar, with the video not moving to the position I had set. Then, if you resize the window or open any other window on top of it, the covered area is blackened, meaning it doesn't display the video image anymore.

It's a shame RulesPlayer has these glitches, because other than that it seems quite a complete player, featuring support for all popular video and audio formats, subtitles and including also all the necessary codecs so that you don't have to download them separately.

As a new GUI for MPlayer, RulesPlayer does provide a simple, nicely designed environment which, unfortunately, doesn't work as well as expected.
