Biggest isn't always best, but in this case, kudos has to go to Microsoft for developing a tool that is both hugely comprehensive and very user-friendly. Microsoft PowerPoint features the ubiquitous 2010 ribbon interface, which makes it very easy to navigate and use. The interface is totally customizable, and as you click on the different elements of your presentation the appropriate set of editing tools appear.

Microsoft PowerPoint features all the editing tools you would expect of an Office product, as well as an impressive selection of presentation-specific options, such as transitions and animations. You can also add and edit a variety of other non-text elements, such as images, video, audio, hypertext and graphs. Where possible, Microsoft PowerPoint also supports drag and drop, making adding information and interesting elements to your presentation especially easy.

From a preparation point of view, Microsoft PowerPoint also excels. Under the file tab you'll find a document summary, including all the information - and tools to modify - non-presentation elements, such as security, compression and sharing and co-authoring options. The program includes functions for rehearsing your presentations to the minutest detail, while you can also record it to watch as a video. SharePoint is supported, and you can access a web version of your presentation via Windows Live.

All in all, Microsoft PowerPoint is an impressive product. User-friendly enough for everyone, but with the advanced features needed to produce really professional presentations, it's hard to think of a situation where Microsoft PowerPoint would not be a great option for users.

Being the cheapest of all three editions, Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student is also the smallest one. The context menu in Word, for example, has been greatly improved and lets you see changes in real time as you browse through the different options. There are also tools to translate text, take and use screenshots, and apply special effects to the images you use in your documents. What's more, Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student now lets you save your documents on SkyDrive and share them online in just two clicks.

Regarding performance, Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student seems to be quite fast and light on system resources. There's a significant improvement in the time the suite apps take to launch, and how they behave when working on your documents.

In all, Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student is an excellent productivity suite with great new features that makes it easier and more comfortable to use.

ABBYY FineReader is an advanced program that uses optical character recognition on scans or photos for text, layout, tables and even the language of the document. The results can be edited within the program, or exported to Word.

Compatible with all scanners, and cameras too, ABBYY FineReader is extremely easy to use. It detects any connected devices, so you can scan in a document or choose an image from a camera or your hard drive. The image is then read, and two windows open. One shows the original image, and the other the digitized editable version.

The performance of ABBYY FineReader is impressive. We tested a document photographed with an iPhone, and it was converted perfectly, with no errors. There are sometimes issues with images, but in general ABBYY FineReader will give you extremely good results. You can export files to PDF, DOC, XLS or HTML.

If you want to effectively digitize paper doncuments, ABBYY FineReader is an excellent and easy to use choice.

This handy application performs multiple jobs, from converting a document into a PDF, merging various PDFs into one single document and transforming PDFs into other formats (Word, Excel, HTML, etc.). ABBYY PDF Transformer comes in a variety of languages, provides a good help file and, best of all, lets you apply passwords and restrict editing of the documents you create.

ABBYY PDF Transformer has trial version limitations, namely that the screenshot reader function is unavailable. It also limits both the number of times you can save a document and the length of time you can use the trial version for. In fact, there are so many different variations on the restrictions that it is a little difficult to figure out exactly what you can do and when.

Another problem I discovered was that in the PDF to other document option, Abbyy PDF Transformer only saves the first two pages, rather than limiting you to two pages overall. This is irritating, as the title page is often not the most useful in a document. Finally, ABBYY PDF Transformer only operates from the start menu - personally, I would prefer a central interface from which I could manage all areas of the program.

ABBYY PDF Transformer is a useful download, but has some serious flaws you'll have to forgive.

With spreadsheet sharing, Microsoft Excel is the ideal way of sharing, managing and analyzing information. This version of Microsoft Excel has improved access across the board, from a cleaner interface to better usability. The ribbon-like interface caused controversy when it was first introduced, but it's much easier to navigate for beginners, since you can now see all the options instead of having them hidden away in menus.

That's not to say the application has become any simpler to learn to use. Microsoft Excel is still a bit intimidating for beginners, although luckily it comes with tons of templates that help users get a better handle on it. One of the best new features it comes with allows you to restore spreadsheets you've accidentally closed. Consequently, it's now much easier to correct mistaken actions. The graphs and graphics you can add to your tables are also much improved.

Sharing data is easy as well, since you can use the Microsoft Excel web app, which allows any invited people to view or edit your spreadsheets. There are even mobile versions so you can access your spreadsheets on the move.

Microsoft Excel sets the standard in spreadsheet software. It comes as part of Microsoft Office 2010, which also includes other leading apps such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. It is incredibly powerful, and while there is a lot to learn in order to get the most out of it, anyone will be able to produce very attractive presentations with the data they enter into Excel spreadsheets.

Microsoft Excel 2010 is essential for many people at work, and there isn't a better spreadsheet application available.

To secure your internet connection, Hotspot Shield Elite creates a Virtual Private Network (a secure connection, usually abbreviated to VPN) between your computer and the Hotspot Shield Elite developer's website, Anchorfree, based in the USA.

Everything is done in an extra tab open in your browser so there's no need to configure anything. A green and red shield in your system tray indicates when Hotspot Shield is and is not connected. The VPN is encrypted with 128 bit SSL encryption so that you can surf safely without worrying about others intercepting your data.

The major reason why users are flocking to Hotspot Shield Elite though is because it allows you to view sites in the USA that are usually restricted to outside users. This is particularly useful for video sites such as Hulu or restricted videos on YouTube. The advantage over the free version is that streaming is much more stable. You can also view your purchase history for Hotspot Shield Elite in your browser.

Hotspot Shield Elite works very well and you don't have to put up with an ad banner at the top of your browser like in the free version. In addition, it tries to install a toolbar at the beginning although you can opt out of this. If you've got Expat Shield installed, you'll also need to remove that first before installing. Also, surfing with Hotspot Shield is noticeably slower than normal but it's fine for streaming video from video sites such as Hulu.

Hotspot Shield now includes malware protection meaning that while using it, you shouldn't get infected by anything that may damage your system.

Hotspot Shield Elite is an easy-to-install and use way of accessing sites that are blocked in your region.

Overview

If you take a lot of screenshots for creating tutorials, Snagit 11 is better than ever. Snagit 11 still has smart window detection so you can automatically select to capture a window or part of the window so you don't have to spend time cropping the image.

New features

For a long time, Snagit was only used to capture and annotate still images but that changes with Snagit 11. The biggest feature update for this version is the ability to capture video. You can now create screencasts using Snagit and upload them directly to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, an FTP server, or Screencast.com.

While Snagit can capture video and voice for screencasts, don't expect the full range of editing features that you find in TechSmith's dedicated screencast application, Camtasia Studio. Snagit 11 aims to make sharing short video tutorials easy. If you want more professional results for your screencasts, give Camtasia Studio a try.

Another big feature upgrade that you'll find in Snagit 11 is the ability to download more stamps and other annotation tools. If the current set of annotation tools aren't to your fancy, just hit the "get more" link inside the app to be taken to TechSmith's website. You can also download plugins for sharing on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and many more.

Snagit 11 also features improved text capture. If you take a screenshot of some text, Snagit automatically detects it and throws it into the Snagit Editor. From there, you can easily export it to whatever text editing program you'd like such as Microsoft Word, Notepad, and Evernote.

Overall, Snagit 11 is a great update for an already amazing program but those running Snagit 10 may not need the new features introduced in this version.

If you don't want or need better text capture, easy social sharing, or video capture, Snagit 10 will work just fine.

It almost sounds like science fiction, but Dragon NaturallySpeaking totally exceeded our expectations. It seems that voice recognition technology has improved a lot over the last few years, and Dragon NaturallySpeaking has clearly taken advantage of it.

The main drawback to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, like with any other voice recognition program, is that it requires some long, boring training – based mainly on reading texts to the computer. Also, the program isn't 100% accurate – something we expected anyway – but its percentage of right words in dictation still remains impressive.

After training Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the program is intuitive and easy to use. The interface is reduced to a small bar from which you can access all the main tools and functions: dictation, reading text aloud, improving accuracy, managing commands and vocabulary. The best thing about Dragon NaturallySpeaking is that you don’t need to speak to the computer as if you were a robot. Just talk naturally, and it’ll pick it up.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is seamlessly embedded in Windows, which means that as long as you have it running, you can start dictating in any application, from Notepad to Firefox. And of course, functionality in Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not limited to dictation: you can also control the computer with your voice - open and close apps, browse the web, view files, and more.

It may look very simple when you first launch the application, but actually, a lot of research and development has gone into Microsoft AutoCollage. The project is an advanced computer vision and imaging program that gathers a selection of your photos and knits them together seamlessly to produce eye-catching collages.

The level of automation in Microsoft AutoCollage means that you don't really have to lift a finger. You just select the folder you want the program to collect the photos from, choose how many images you want incorporated into the collage using the slider, then click 'Create'. You can then save, email or even set the picture as your background wallpaper, directly from within AutoCollage.

The technology in Microsoft AutoCollage is certainly very impressive, particularly the face detection element, which automatically picks out peoples heads, allowing you to draw attention to these. If anything though, I felt AutoCollage was a little too hands-off as there are no real image editing tools for you to refine your collages yourself, or add text, frames, etc. What's more, there were a few bugs that cropped up in testing, such as when setting the image as a desktop in XP.

Microsoft AutoCollage is a powerful collage-rendering tool, it's just a shame it doesn't give you more control over the finished output.

CyberLink PowerDVD has all the extra functionality you would expect from a high-quality player. It features a sleek interface you can customize with skins and includes direct access to MoovieLive, an online movie database that helps you categorize all the titles in your collection and access movie reviews online.

Features

CyberLink PowerDVD is generally very easy to use. Most of the program's functions can be performed with the mouse or their corresponding keyboard hotkey, and there's also a comprehensive context menu that gives you access to even more options by just right-clicking anywhere on the image.

Regarding playback, the movie flows very smoothly even when you move CyberLink PowerDVD's window around or play it in fullscreen mode. Image quality has been improved thanks to the special TrueTheater filters which provide pixel-perfect images and make the most out of your HD visual equipment. CyberLink PowerDVD includes the innovative TrueTheater 3D, a special filter that can transform your DVDs into 3D movies like the ones in cinemas everywhere. The 3D effect obviously only works if you have a 3D-capable display.

CyberLink PowerDVD also lets you change playing speed, take snapshots of your favorite scenes in the movie and have a particular scene or sentence repeated over and over again with the "Say it again" and the "AB Repeat" tools. This may be useful for foreign language students who watch movies to improve their listening skills. Other interesting features in CyberLink PowerDVD are the possibility to share video files on YouTube and support for video bookmarks.

Sound

Sound in CyberLink PowerDVD can be configured in different ways, depending on your hardware (from headphones to a full stereo surround system) in order to obtain the best possible sound quality. TrueTheater Noise Reduction also makes sure you get the clearest sound possible.

Firstly, be warned that this is a big download – 636.2MB to be exact. Once the five minute installation is complete, you’re presented with three choices – dropping flour on targets, introductory test flight or Caribbean landing. The first involves a simple bit of target practice whilst the others involve getting to grips with the basic controls and mastering landings.

Whichever you choose, you can take control of anything from ultra-lights to Cessnas, commercial airliners and even helicopters. However, to make it more interesting, Simulator X also features 50 different missions to stop you falling asleep at the controls. The missions come as an urgent update from Air Traffic Control and can be fun or serious. Due to a runway closure, you may be asked to land the plane on top of a moving bus or, due to an explosion, you might get asked to rescue workers on an oil ring before they burn alive. Other missions include search and rescue, “Area 51” missions and even one where you have to pick-up film-stars.

In the full version, there are 24,000 airports from around the world to choose from and chances are you’ll be able to fly from your local airport. The realism is impressive, including fuel trucks, luggage belts and walkways being extended from the craft to the airport. If you should get too close to the ground (i.e. crash land), you’re treated to the sight of wildlife running around the fields and amongst the wreckage, proving that Microsoft really have gone to extremes in trying to recreate a virtual world. They even claim to have mapped the accurate positions of the stars according to location and time of year. You can also fly according to the current weather conditions in certain zones by connecting to an online server. Otherwise, you can set the weather according to your wishes to see how the plane handles in a storm or blizzard.

For those that want the real deal, options include a full pre-flight briefing where you discuss the flight conditions, weather predictions and other factors that might affect your flight. If you want a bit of drama, you can also pre-program the plane to malfunction during the flight. See how your co-pilot reacts when he realises that the undercarriage is either jammed or dropped off somewhere over Denver.

Another unique feature in the full version is the possibility to add another person to the cockpit. If you have a friend connected to the net, they can log on and come along for the ride or guide you down as Air Traffic Control.

In comparison to many other simulators such as X-Plane, this simulator is a joy because of many fun additions and the option to choose the difficulty of the flight mode. The only major problem is that its very heavy on resources and I had trouble running this alongside various other apps. This can be solved by reducing the frame-rate in the options menu but the game doesn’t run quite as seamlessly as a result.

Email clients have suffered a steep decline in recent times, mainly thanks to the rise of safe, attractive and reliable online alternatives. Microsoft Outlook has been among the losers, but 2010's version looks to be a step in the right direction.

Visually, Microsoft Outlook is clean, crisp and clear. It's very easy to find your way around: the ribbon interface makes finding features easy, while Account Information provides a very simple interface to manage accounts, settings and more.

In addition to multi-account email support, Microsoft Outlook also features Calendar, Tasks and Contact tools, all equally easy to use. Adding to functionality is a powerful search function, while various add-ins (to be downloaded separately) give you messaging, Hotmail, and social network functionality.

For high-volume users, Microsoft Outlook also hides a number of features that make handling lots of emails much easier. From Conversation View and inbox management tools, to extra right-click functionality and Mail Box Cleanup, it should be easier than ever to keep your email under control.

For users of mail client software, Microsoft Outlook is attractive, flexible and efficient - in other words, it's a very good bet.

PC Speed Maximizer is one of many PC optimization tools currently on the market. Like its competitors, it works by scanning your computer for problems, listing them and presenting you with the option of fixing them, hopefully before they begin to slow down your computer.

PC Speed Maximizer's interface is simple to use and intuitive. It presents scan and repair options clearly, naming and listing everything so it is easy to see exactly what is happening. It also offers a large range of scan options, from cleaning the registry to clearing junk files and eliminating invalid short cuts, and quickly fixes any problems it does find.

Unfortunately, the option to fix these problems is only available with the paid version - the trial version just lets you know that your computer is crawling with errors; it doesn't actually let you do anything about it. Even if you are using the paid version, PC Speed Maximizer is buggy, stalling and freezing for no apparent reason. The scans themselves are slow, don't indicate how long they are likely to take, and don't show you areas that have already been scanned.

PC Speed Maximizer's trial version is too limited to be of use, while the paid version leaves a lot to be desired.

Featuring the same robust engine from previous versions, the new Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 is one of the most powerful protection tools you can use to defend your system from viruses, worms, Trojans and other sorts of malware.

What does it do?

With a totally revamped interface, all designed in white and green, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 feels very comfortable for the newcomer, while including extensive configuration settings that enable more tech-savvy users to adapt the program to their needs. The bottom area in Kaspersky Anti-Virus includes buttons for the program’s main functions: scans, database update, a virtual keyboard and a quarantine area for infected files.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 includes three types of system scan (Full, Critical Areas and Vulnerability). Not only does the program take care of your file system in real time, thanks to a heuristic-based monitor, but also your email, web browsing and even IM conversations. All these filters can be tweaked in the program's comprehensive settings menu. On the downside, the regular scanning of any active apps can momentarily slow down your system.

Added protection

The program also includes the so called Kaspersky Security Network, an online service that improves Kaspersky’s response to new threats, thanks to anonymous data collected from users.

There are lots more advanced settings to play around with in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012.
