Upon launch, you are greeted with pleasing welcome screen that gives you a brief tutorial about how to use the program. Moving forward, you are shown lessons of varying difficulty. There are customizations on the side that allow you perform tests according to a time or character limit. There are also some options to toggle assistance as you get more accustomed to typing.

The TIPP10 interface is well laid out, with color aids to help you see what characters are pressed with an on-screen keyboard. We much preferred TIPP10's interface to something like TypingMaster.

TIPP10's lessons are designed to help tackle learning special characters and numbers. TIPP10 is impressive in that it learns what characters, numbers, and symbols you have trouble with and will increase their presence in your lessons.

Each lesson you complete in TIPP10 rewards you with points, which you can track. After each lesson, the program gives you a bunch of useful data like characters per minute, error rate, and which fingers commit the most errors!

The only gripe we have about TIPP10 is that some lessons are given in German and English. It's a bit jarring to include some lessons in two languages as your brain tries adapt to each. It isn't a deal breaker by any means though.

Overall, TIPP10 is an excellent, open source cross platform typing tutorial that adapts to your needs.

The first thing I liked in Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor (TTTT) is that it holds your hand from the start. As soon as you launch the program a rough looking, yet friendly Viking greets you and will guide throughout the lessons. You can always rely on him if you have doubts or questions. The first exercises are meant to teach you how to place your hands correctly on the keyboard and how to type common letter associations. As you move on the difficulty rises and you are asked to type longer key words at a faster pace.

Where you need to reproduce a certain key combination a pair of virtual hands shows you how it’s done on the keyboard. Whenever you make a mistake the letters will appear in red and you will hear a beeping sound. You can check statistics to see with what keys you make the most mistakes. Not one to overlook a detail, TTTT even gives you tips on how to sit correctly in front of your PC so that you don’t tire too quickly. For the more experienced, you can also set your Words Per Minute count to see if you are typing on par with professional standards.

Once you feel more comfortable with your typing skills you can try them out in the two games provided by TTTT: Safari Park and Brick Factory. Both challenges give you a time limit to type certain key associations. You can adjust the speed to make it more difficult.

The Songseeker option blends iTunes to Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. This option can detect what song you’re playing and will download the lyrics if you click on the iTunes logo in the right hand corner. The program will display them and you’ll have to type in the correct characters. This is another way of learning how to type, and what’s more, you can enjoy your favorite song at the same time.

Depending on the language you’ve chosen when you installed TTTT, you can set the type of keyboard you are using. For example, English users will have a choice of UK, US and Dvorak keyboards.

If you don’t feel at ease with your typing skills, I strongly recommend using Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. You’ll be able to learn at your own pace and will improve thanks to a multitude of exercises testing your hand placement, dexterity and speed.

RapidTyping Portable includes a series of simple exercises to get you started in the art of typing without having to be constantly looking at the keyboard. The program lets you train specific groups of letters that are located next to each other on the keyboard, and also shows you the right finger to use for each of them. At the end of the lesson you're presented with some colorful statistics that show information about your performance and improvement.

The interface in RapidTyping Portable is a bit weird, as it includes some background images and animations that can be quite distracting. Luckily you can disable both and use a plain, white background during your lessons.

Regarding lessons, the ones included in RapidTyping Portable are quite basic; they only cover groups of letters and don't include any real words or sentences. On the upside, you can easily create your own lessons, and put yourself to test with real custom texts. And of course, being a portable application, you can run RapidTyping Portable without leaving any trace on the computer – or even run it from a USB key.

Klavaro Touch Typing Tutor is a simple tool that teaches you the basics of typing and also lets you practice to improve your speed and accuracy. Lessons in Klavaro Touch Typing Tutor grow in difficulty as you make progress through the program, from single letters on the keyboard to complete texts.

The good thing about Klavaro Touch Typing Tutor is that it offers support for many different keyboard layouts and languages, which makes it suitable for a wider number of users, no matter what their mother tongue is.

On the downside, I missed some extra features found in other similar tools, such as the possibility to keep track of your results with statistics, or to customize the text with which you can practice.
