MultiTranse is a program that employs free online resources to translate to/from English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese and Norwegian (only English-Norwegian is available). The program can translate specific words, phrases, sentences or even small texts, up to 6000 symbols at a time.

The program is 100% Unicode compatible, automatically determines font, encodes Unicode text into any ANSI format and the other way around. If the font is not found in the user's computer, the program offers an option to download it from the Microsoft's official website.

MultiTranse comes with a multilingual user interface that is very simple and easy to use. First, you insert text, either by typing it, copying from the clipboard or opening a file. Then, press the button that identifies the language of the original. The next step is to choose the language the word, phrase, sentence or text needs to be translated to. Press the button to start translation.

NuCode is based around a set of lessons that includes the whole Morse code alphabet and other characters. If you can successfully complete the lessons then you will ace the FCC 5WPM code test.

No previous knowledge of the Morse code alphabet is assumed and you are gently introduced to a few characters to start with in the early lessons. Then you work through to the final lesson at your own pace. Right from the start you practice at your final target speed of 6 WPM with just a few initial characters.

Once you have learned to reliably copy this small group of characters a few more characters are added and you will again practice until you can copy them all reliably at full speed.

If you regularly have to translate from one language to another, then it's a pain to keep going online to find a translator which can handle the languages you need.

The big advantage of Translate.net is that it scans multiple translation sites for languages that you need to translate to and from. The good thing here is that you don't have to go online and tediously surf the net for translators and by using translators from different sources, you can much more accurate and better translations. The annoying thing however is that the program displays advertisements within the program based on the translation texts that you are searching on. However, the developers assure that Translate.Net does not collect any personal data or use any aggressive advertising techniques on it's users. One thing worth mentioning however is that this program is completely open source which means that the advertising feature may be possible to remove, or at least block, if you have some C++ programming knowledge.

A great solution for those that translate regularly although be prepared to be bombarded with adverts.

CatsCradle is an aid for language translators that provides an easy way to translate web pages. While it does not do any translation, it extracts the text out of evey page and presents it in an easy to editable overview that allows you to translate the text portions without having to deal with any HTML code or other distractions.

The built-in editing screen allows for side-by-side editing, as well as optional real-time browser preview of the translated page. Additional features include a built in glossary that can suggest appropriate words and phrases while you are translating, project file catalog with word count and more. CatsCradle can also handle .hhc and .hhk files for translating of .chm help files. And of course, you can also use the tool to edit text on any web page without translating edit, so it can a also handy tool for webmasters that need some quick no-code text editing.

On the trend that sees a constant increase in the brain fitness software market, LearnWords is meant to practice you memory skills by learning a new language such as Spanish, Italian, French or Japanese.

Don't expect anything futuristic though, LearnWords is just a simple matching words game in a non invasive window that you can leave on while you are working, ready to be used for a 5min break when you feel like it. A handy feature is that you can run it also on most mobile phones, so that you can train on the way back home too.

It's funny to play with and despite the very basic interface, it's not boring at all, as the different type of matching games are mixed while you play. In this way you will have the possibility to test your memory in different ways without getting lazy. When a word is displayed, just click on the right translation between the options available. Every now and then the program will ask you to translate a specific word and after you have done it correctly, you can choose not to be trained on that one again so that you can move on to new words. You can also click the speaker button to hear the correct pronunciation of it. It's a pity though that there are no exercises with entire sentences, as one would learn and remember more if words were placed in a context.

LearnWords is a very simple game with which you can improve your memory skills and improve foreign vocabulary at the same time.

Today's society works at a global level, and that usually requires the ability to speak at least one foreign language besides your mother tongue.

But if you never managed to learn the German declension system or the Spanish verbs, don't worry. Now you can rely on gTranslate to grasp the general meaning of any online document you come across while browsing the web.

This extension enables you to translate any word on any webpage to the language of your selection, provided it's supported by the Google translation services which are the ones used by gTranslate. The extension sets the right language combination automatically, according to your browser's language and the website you're visiting, but you can change it if you like. Also, though I thought it would only work with singles words, I was pleased to see it could translate short snippets of text as well.

On the downside, the translation sometimes takes a while to appear, or doesn't appear at all. In any case, always use automatic translation with care: they can help you understand the overall meaning but they usually fail in grammar and syntax.

With this extension you can translate words and text snippets on any webpage, always bearing in mind that automatic translations are far from perfect.

As a native Spanish speaker I never had to go through the pain of learning Spanish conjugations by heart – it all flowed naturally as I grew up. However, my experience as foreign language learner tells me that the Spanish verb system is not certainly the easiest one.

Lingobit Localizer is an easy to use software localization tool, aimed to make collaboration with translators smooth and efficient.

Lingobit Localizer extracts localizable resources from your application and makes it easy to translate, check and preview translations. When the translation is ready, Localizer creates a localized version of your application - no source code changing is required.

Localization can be done in-house or delegated to another company. In the latter case, translation tasks are distributed via self-extracting localization kits with a project file (no source-code) and a ‘lite’ edition of localizer for translators.

When you release a new version of your software, old translations are automatically merged with resources from the next version and you'll only need to translate new and changed content.

On the whole, Lingoes is an interesting application which combines a comprehensive dictionary with a translator service (while looking and feeling mysteriously similar to its competitor, Babylon). There are also some useful tools like the periodic table, an abbreviation chart and an irregular verbs one, plus an international time zone converter, a dialing codes directory, a weights & measures converter and to end a currency converter.

Theoretically the most useful tool is that by pressing CTRL+ right click on whatever word you have on your screen, a pop-up window should appear with the definition of that word, a search tool for a deeper definition and also an audio file with the correct pronunciation. The disappointing aspect of this feature is that it doesn't work with a lot of words (unfortunately, I have to say, the majority), even if they appear in the list of definitions that Lingoes has in its database. I think this is a major bug as it invalidates massively the application's main utility which would be to have an always-available dictionary without having to change window.

The program leans on Google for the translation function which I find to be weak as many words are not translated correctly or not even found.

Because of strange performance issues, Lingoes is not worth using if you're just looking for an on-the-fly dictionary or translator. Some of its other features are really useful, though.

TranslateIt! will come in handy if you work in English and German simultaneously and need to quickly translate between both languages.

The application fits in your launch bar and shows translations for any word in German or English that you hover your arrow over. You can add the word to a database and have it voiced thanks to a little link in the hover window.

TranslateIt! also features both English and German dictionaries however these will not display any definitions for you. Instead they display the translation results of the word you select. These dictionaries include a very wide range of words and terms. You can also use the search box at the bottom to find words more quickly.

One of the main drawbacks of TranslateIt! is that it is limited to English and German. Having more languages on offer would have made it much more interesting to many more people. Showing translations in a hover window, is a good idea at first, but it can quickly get annoying, especially that the application will even try to translate words in other languages you hover your arrow over. We suggest disabling it and having it come up only with a hotkey.

TranslateIt! is a good tool to quickly find translations of words from German to English and vice versa.

iWisdom is a desktop program that will help you manage and maintain a list of quotations and insightful ideas. Besides allowing you to store and manage your quotes, the program offers a number of tools to help you publish them.

ABAEnglish is an entertaining program that aims to teach English with common situations from real life, aimed mainly at Spanish speakers.

The program has 144 units and six levels of difficulty, and there is a test at the end of each first complete unit. Each unit includes a video with a situation in which you can also switch on subtitles. The rest of the unit consists of a dictation, a role-playing game to test your pronunciation, written and oral exercises, and a list of new words. This download only includes the first unit of the course although it's enough to give you an idea of the rest of the program. The developers are keen to emphasize that this program takes a much more original approach than similar ones. To create a sense of reality, over 300 voice actors have been used throughout the complete course and the program is packed with options for interactive learning.

This is an innovative English learning course that brings a touch of reality to language learning although like all language courses, many of the situations are a bit cliched.

If you study classical Latin or Greek you're going to find Diogenes really helpful. This program is a translation assistant that you can use to look up words and expressions in those two languages, using the official online resources and databases provided by the Packard Humanities Institute and the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae.

The program features several ways to query Latin and Greek databases, although the way they work sometimes is not clear and I ended up getting some cryptic database message errors which I wasn't sure how to avoid, as there's no documentation.

In any case, Diogenes offers very detailed answers including meaning, example of usage and other important informative elements that can be very useful when translating classical writers.

With some improvement, Diogenes would become the perfect alternative to paper dictionaries in classical translations.

Amigos Spanish Puzzles is a very useful tool for learning and remembering Spanish words. There are a variety of six games that you can play, such as hangman and anagrams that concentrate on both basic and advanced vocabulary.

In each game you have help and/or hints such as the number of letters that make up the word in Spanish, the meaning of the word in english or if you give up you can find out the solution. The complete version includes more than 2,500 words and expressions, 15 categories and 75 subcategories.

Amigos Spanish is a teaching tool that will assist you in learning verb conjugation using Spanish thanks to some entertaining and more importantly educational games. The various modes of learning consist of straight verb tests, crosswords, word searches and anagram games.

It's weakness is its appearance, which seems to have been given little thought but thankfully this is not something that should be considered high on the priority list for this type of software.

WikSpeak is a phonetic dictionary that allows to analyse the correlation between pronunciation and spelling of the English words.

It's basically a simple and fast graphic interface to retrieve either the phonetic transcription (IPA) or play the sound from any English word avoiding the annoying process of browsing dictionaries.
