Virtual WiFi Router is pretty easy to set up itself, but before you start you need to make sure your you have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. correctly configured (the developer has made instructions).

Once your PC is ready, simply open Virtual WiFi Router, select your modem from the drop-down menu and then choose a WiFi network name and password. From now, other WiFi devices will be able to connect to yours if they have the password. This is great if you are using a 3G modem and want to share your connection.

Virtual WiFi Router could be improved if it automated the Windows setup process, but even so it's a neat little application that can come in really useful.

In its original form, TunnelBear only allowed US and UK connections, but now it works world-wide. If you are traveling and want to use a service like Pandora or Netflix, which are only available in the USA, you'll have to use a VPN service like TunnelBear or Hotspot Shield.

Like Cyberghost VPN, TunnelBear offers a free version with the option to pay for more bandwidth. The free version offers 500MB but TunnelBear has a promotion where you can Twitter about the program to receive 1GB of additional bandwidth for the month for free. This virtual private network (VPN) is based on OpenVPN and, like other VPN clients, your network connection so that others can't identify who - or where - you are. Although you have to sign up to use the service, it's free and doesn't require an email address.

Once you have signed up to UltraVPN, you'll get a username and password to log in. That's all you need to do, as the program will automatically connect and assign you a new, anonymous IP address. There are a few configuration options that you can choose to investigate - for instance, you'll be able to set the proxy server to use OpenVPN's settings, Internet Explorer's or manual (HTTP or SOCKS) - but you don't actually have to make any changes to use UltraVPN.

Once you are connected to UltraVPN, you can surf as usual, although you might find it a little slow. Unfortunately, we also had problems accessing Hulu.com and the BBC's iPlayer. As overcoming geographically-based limitations is one of the main reasons many people use a VPN, you'll just have to download UltraVPN to see if it is going to meet your particular needs.

In general, though, UltraVPN program is extremely easy to use and its IP anonymization worked well, so if it gives you access to the sites you want, UltraVPN is a good choice.

Do you like playing games like Call of Duty, Minecraft and Portal 2 online? Well, you’re in luck, because this is precisely what Tunngle is designed for.

Tunngle is based on registering and joining the Tunngle community. This is free, but a little complicated. Once you have the program downloaded and your passwords and usernames sorted out, you can sign in and participate in various chat rooms, share files and, of course, join games.

The Tunngle interface is the default red and black. It makes things a little hard to read - as does the small font - but skins are also available. The various parts of the program are displayed in tab-like sections across the top of the window. You can access the online Tunngle features here (news, downloads, etc.), as well as actually using it as a VPN.

To share files over Tunngle with friends, they'll have to sign up too, but once they have, it's as easy as starting a private chat with them (using the Messenger icon in the top right corner), right-clicking and choosing Tunngle Shares.

If you fancy gaming with Tunngle, you can search for a particular network or view all games via Community > Networks > Browser. Once you've found one you like, just double click and you're in. There is a chat function throughout Tunngle and, of course, there are online FAQs and forums. If you have a look around the web, you’ll also find plenty of Tunngle tutorials.

The fact that you must sign up to use the program will be off-putting for certain VPN users, but for those who are interested in playing games against friends - or strangers - Tunngle's an interesting new alternative.

With Hide Your IP Address you can easily mask your real IP address and replace it with a 'fake' IP address located somewhere else on the planet. In order to achieve this, the program makes use of proxy servers scattered all over the globe, from China to the United States. Proxy servers tend to slow down your connection, but I have to say that Hide Your IP Address showed a high degree of reliability and excellent speed rates during our tests.

Contrary to what you may think, Hide Your IP Address is really easy to use and doesn't require any technical skills. Whenever you need to hide your real IP, simply click the Start button on the program's interface. That's all! You can then minimize it to the system tray.

Hide Your IP Address includes an Options menu where you can set the program to change the proxy according to a certain period of time, as well as make it erase all traces of your internet browsing (temporary files, cookies, history and so on) when you start the program. On the downside, Hide Your IP Address works only with Internet Explorer and Firefox, and its design could be clearly improved.

The SOCKS protocol (or protocols based on it) is one of the most common proxy server protocols around, but some applications are not able to use it. If you find yourself in this situation, a program like Super Socks5Cap is your best bet. It acts as a bridge between the proxy server and the application that is unable to use it, allowing you to bypass the problematic area and use the proxy with ease.

Super Socks5Cap isn't for the absolute beginner, as it has very little help and an interface that leaves a lot to be desired.
