TACO prevents over 100 different online advertising networks - including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft - from displaying highly targeted advertisements using the detailed information on your web surfing habits. TACO works by placing "opt-out" cookies into Firefox which prevent the services from targeting you with ads.

It is a pretty drastic tool. TACO will clear-out all of your existing cookies except the 100 it places in Firefox meaning you'll lose a lot of your stored passwords, filled-in-forms, etc.

TACO does give you much greater awareness of which sites are trying to track you however. You can now see how you are being tracked at every website and privacy alerts show you which trackers are active. It also blocks many tracking techniques such and network scripts, widgets and other web bugs.

Some features are still in beta testing such as disposable email generation and other protection tools but these are disabled by default. Finally, the developers claim that they do not track users that install TACO and to encourage confidence in the add-on, they've also issued the source code for all to see.

TACO has become somewhat bloated over the years but its still an excellent away to stop advertising from tracking and targeting you when using Firefox.

Although this app boasts one of the most boring looking user interfaces you'll ever see, Expired Cookies Cleaner performs its job impeccably, detecting and automatically removing unneeded cookies with the click of a button. If you use Firefox or Opera don't bother with this one because those browsers don't store obsolete cookies, but if you're a hardcore IE surfer then this program will save you a lot of space on your PC.

Alas, Cookie Monster has nothing to do with everyone's favourite greedy Sesame Street character and is quite simply a utility to manage your cookies.It works with all major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape and Opera plus it also works with any Gecko-based browser

Cookie Monster allows you to define which cookies you want to preserve and then delete the remaining ones with a simple mouse click. It can also detect cookies from sites included in your favorites and/or bookmarks. It's particularly useful if you don't want to disable or block all cookies but need to let through just one or two particular ones (such as for online banking).

Cookie Monster is useful if you're having specific problems with cookies although the fact is most browsers allow you to manage cookies fairly well anyway.

PurgeIE optionally displays a list of the items it deletes and provides a 'Preview' function to let you determine the items that would be deleted by the 'Purge'.

CS Lite is a stripped down version of CookieSafe and while being less powerful, its much more user friendly. CS Lite works as a Firefox toolbar button or in the context menu. Just click on the icon to allow, block, or temporarily allow the site to set cookies.

You can also view, clear or edit the cookies and exceptions by right clicking on the CS Lite icon. If you want to be ultra careful, you can choose to deny cookies globally and then enable them on a per site basis.

Alternatively, you can download a blocklist that contains a list of untrusted sites that you can that you can import into Firefox. Cookies will automatically be blocked on such sites in the future. This blocklist used to be automatically updated but is not any longer but you can choose to update it manually.

CS Lite is a superb cookie blocking extension for Firefox that ensures you take control of the cookies placed on your hard drive.
