Now, it's got even better with the latest release which is packed with improvements and updates that Google fans will lap up. These include custom buttons with gadget support, synchronized toolbar settings (so you can sync two toolbars across different computers), Google Notebook integration, a word find function, suggestions for navigation errors and an improved autofiller. It also now features details of your Web History (which is totally unnecessary although very easily searchable compared to Firefox or IE). Apart from the sync feature, I think the best addition is the gadget support. Through these, Google Toolbar now supports live feeds and when you click on any of the gadget icons, the gadget pops down from the Toolbar, no matter what site you are on and close when you are done with it. You can mix and match gadgets as much as you want although the danger is you end up adding so many that the toolbar becomes bloated.

This is the best release of Google Toolbar yet and it creeps even further into territory that formerly was the domain of browsers - check it out now.

If you own a website you've probably heard about the Alexa ranking, a list of Internet sites based on traffic data which measures the popularity of those sites on the Web. This information is mainly obtained through the Alexa Toolbar.

This toolbar is known as Sparky in its version for the Firefox browser and offers pretty much the same functionality as its Internet Explorer equivalent, but with a different design. This means you'll be able to check all the Alexa data relating to the site you're currently visiting with Firefox (rank position, domain information) as well as other sites that visitors to that webpage also visited, which is a great way to discover new sites.

The difference between the Internet Explorer and the Firefox versions of the Alexa Toolbar is that in the first one the toolbar is displayed as is (as a toolbar attached to the top area of the browser's interface) while the second one displays its elements in different areas of the browser: the Alexa ranking appears on the status bar, the Related links section is showed next to the "Help" menu and the Alexa search engine appears in the search engines list in Firefox.

That said, bear in mind that this toolbar does collect some data about your browsing habits, but then again, if it didn't, we couldn't have the Alexa ranking and information about related sites. I’ve never been very fond of toolbars and other web browser add-ons, basically because the services they’re supossed to offer don’t make up for the amount of resources and space they use. But this toolbar has the Google trademark on it and that encouraged me to test it. If it’s Google, it can’t be that bad.

The application also includes some very interesting utilities, just a mouse-click away: a spellchecker with support for several languages, an autofill tool to quickly complete online forms, a bookmark system to access your favourite sites from anywhere and a special security feature that will warn you if you’re being threatened by a phishing website. Google Toolbar also helps you manage your favourite RSS feeds (surprisingly compatible with Google Homepage but not Google Reader) and even translates web texts for you, although the results, as in any other automatic translator, are far from perfect.

I would definitely recommend Google Toolbar even for non toolbar lovers, as it provides you with direct access to several Google services and some other interesting tools, and it can be easily adapted to your liking. I guess this time the space taken by the toolbar does make up for it.

The note taker doesn’t really provide anything original but you might enjoy being able to jot down notes that will be available on your desktop.
