Teeworlds 0.4.2 - Excellent free Worms style game in 2D

In terms of originality, Teeworlds scores top marks. if you combined Hello Kitty with Kirby's Dreamland and Quake III, then you'd get somewhere close to the concept.

You can choose from 17 character designs and fight against one or more persons in the different scenarios available through LAN or the Internet. The latest release also incorporates "fair" player spawning, the ability to kick players, and a very cute welcome screen to encourage players to set their names and favorite settings before playing their first game. The game has quite a few similarities to the Worms series of games, with the big exception that Teeworlds is played in real-time, while Worms is turn based.

The game is played using both mouse and keyboard - A/D moves your "Tee" left and right, W/spacebar makes it jump, and the mouse is used to aim and fire. Right-clicking launches a grappling hook, which can be used to move around the map quickly, and also grab other players. The game is so far free-for-all only, but a Capture the flag mode seems to be in the works. The problem comes if you try to set up your own server to play against a friend though - it's immensely complicated but there is an FAQ to help you through.

Fun, action packed and easy to play - if only Teeworlds was easier to play against others over the net, it would be even better.

Urban Terror Quake 3 Mod 4.1 - Mortal combat between terrorists and marines in Quake 3

Urban Terror brings a very welcome dose of 'realism' to the Quake 3 engine. Taking place in realistic, urban settings, the mod pits SWAT or marines against terrorists in a blur of hi-octane cordite-reeking action.

Featuring actual weapons (with recoil!) and more realistic environments, Urban Terror combines the best of Quake 3 Arena with what was, for me, a much more enjoyable setting. The speed of play is impressively fast and the graphics held up fairly well. The quality of the sound effects leaves something to be desired (every shot sounds exactly like the last, never mind who fired it) but I found that the music added a welcome theatricality to events.

The download includes a number of default maps including Abbey, which is the one you can see in our screenshots. On this particular map, newcomers and rusty oldies alike can try out their skills by adding bots to the game for a sort of single player mode. It's also worth noting that the game no longer requires Quake 3 Arena to be installed (see the requirements section below for details).

Urban Terror is one of the best Quake 3 Arena mods available - highly recommended.

Kong 1.0.1 - Get up to some monkey business

Get ready for Kong, an action game which can be played in multiplayer mode or against computer controlled bots from a top-down perspective. There are no tanks and soldiers here - only orangutans armed to the teeth. Depending on the mode of play you choose (deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag), the goal is different, but the means are always the same - a lot of weapons. These are of different types, such as lasers, rocket launchers or machine guns that can can be enhanced with various "power ups" that are distributed across each level.

Each level is full of new and surprising obstacles and objects to make your life easier or more difficult depending on the scenario. Although I never got to experience it, I imagine that the multiplayer mode with friends across the internet would also be a hell of a lot of fun in this game. The developers have purposely gone for a "Cell-Shading" technique which gives the characters a cartoon look and feel. The sound effects, especially as regards the weapons, are particularly good giving the game an extra touch of class.

For great gameplay, graphics and sound this game can't be faulted for hours of monkey madness fun.

Crysis Demo - Futuristic action at its best

Crysis is a futuristic first-person-shooter that will immerse you into some action-packed missions in a remote island that has been invaded by an alien race. As a member of a highly qualified squadron, you'll take part in the US government plan to recover the island and wipe out those nasty aliens.

This demo gives a sneak peek of the game that enables you to get a very approximate idea of what the game looks like. It allows you to play a complete level that also works as tutorial to learn the basic movements and keyboard shortcuts. Graphics are simply stunning and the sound effects, like radio conversations, add another touch of realism. The game gets you quickly involved into the adventure, leading your way through several objectives and letting you taste different weapons, along with your character's abilities. These special skills, together with the high level of interactivity with the environment, make Crysis a very open game where every situation can be solved in several different ways.

Sometimes the environment is too dark and you'll hardly see anything, but fortunately you can turn night vision on to make things a bit clearer. Also, you'll need some patience before actually starting to play, as it's highly recommended to watch the cinematic intro and get a glimpse of the whole story – that is, as long as your computer meets the high hardware requirements.

Crysis is a must-have for all FPS lovers: varied missions, lots of action and a very attractive story that each player can enjoy in their own way.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare - Fast-paced, modern warfare action

Call of Duty has established itself as one of the greatest game series ever. With consistently improving graphics and AI, one of the only real criticisms it has faced of late was the repetitive nature of its setting. World War II is a fascinating, multi-theatre world for games to approach in many ways: but how about something different? Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the answer to that request. This game plunges you head-first into a present-day battlefield, even more fast-paced than its predecessors.

This demo offers you one mission from the full version of the game, where you play Sergeant Paul Jackson, of the US Marines. You're dispatched to save a tank which has become waylaid during its mission against a rebel leader in Saudi Arabia. Like any good demo, the mission features a range of combat situations, including the use of anti-tank weapons, the destruction of an anti-aircraft battery and at least one seriously fast-paced, confusing fire fight.

The graphics in COD4 are top notch, and we didn't notice any lag even at higher-end settings. COD4 is built on a new proprietary engine which offers much better support for up-to-the-minute lighting effects, clearly visible in this test mission. Another aspect of the new engine makes for a really interesting change to gameplay. Some forms of cover (a light wooden fence, for example), won't offer you much protection like they did in years gone by. While buildings are not destructible, many elements of the environment (like cars and, yes, light wooden fences) are easily destroyed with gunfire. Heavier weapons can cut through heavier cover too, "Shoot them through the wall!" you're ordered at one point.

All this added realism makes the general quality of gameplay really high. We noticed great improvements in AI, even on easier levels of difficulty where previous games may have left you feeling somewhat silly. In fact, COD4 was surprisingly good, especially when there had been some negative reaction to the XBOX 360 beta.

Fast paced, intense and varied: awesome graphics and involving gameplay make Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare a must-have for any self-respecting gamer.

Medal of Honor: Airborne - The battle continues in the Airborne Division

The Medal of Honor series is back with a new first person shooter, set –again- during Second World War. Don’t get me wrong here: the lack of originality in the game's historical background must not be taken as a negative point. On the contrary, many other similar games have demonstrated that this conflict makes the perfect scenario for some frantic war action.

Medal of Honor: Airborne tests your abilities as a soldier from the very beginning, with an impressive parachute jump in the middle of a fierce battle. You'll have to steer your way until landing, always looking for a safe spot. If you survive this first test, then you're ready to grab your weapon and carry out the missions you've been entrusted with.

The first few minutes are just crazy. There are soldiers shouting everywhere, whistling bullets flying all around, far away explosions and fire-spitting machine guns. The incredible realism of graphics and sound effects plunges you right into the conflict, achieving a degree of immersion that makes you feel like you were really there.

Put simply, Medal of Honor: Airborne is a must-have for all FPS lovers that enables you to write your own page in recent history.

World War II On Line 1.26 - Take part in the 20th Century's greatest war

Battleground Europe is fought on an accurate half-scale map of 1940's Western Europe. This map is dotted with a network of towns and cities. Each town is a varied collection of facilities, but includes always at least one army base (which includes an infantry spawn point and a vehicle spawn point), one “town center,” and supply depots linking the town to adjacent towns by road, rail or water. The only exception for this is some cities located on islands that are inaccessible by road/bridges do not support vehicle spawning.

Game play at its most basic level is a matter of attacking forces spawning in and forming up then attacking a town with the object of capturing all the facilities and the army base. Defenders spawn their own vehicles, guns, and most infantry at the army base, with a limited ability to spawn infantry at the various supply depots around town.

Everything revolves around the infantryman. As the only unit that can capture anything, all of the weapons systems in the game – from long-range destroyers, to aircraft with tons of high-explosive bombs, to heavily armed and armored tanks – are ultimately only as good as their ability to deliver infantry safely to capturable facilities. There are of course many complexities involved, the greatest of which is the thousands of other human beings trying their best to prevent exactly that.

Code of Honor: The French Foreign Legion - Enlist in the Foreign Legion and battle in the Ivory Coast

For almost two hundred years now, the French Foreign Legion has attracted adventurers from all over the world. One of them is Claude Boulet, a 26 year-old Parisian, brought up in harmony with tough street rules. The Legion was where he found his place, and it led him straight to the hellish African savanna.

A revolution inspired by the African Revolutionary Group erupted in Ivory Coast. The FDSC government forces, and the European troops supporting them, were overwhelmed by a surprise attack. As a result the enemy possesses an impressive armory. Even worse is the fact that the rebels have taken over a transport of radioactive waste on its way from nuclear power plants. They now have enough material to create several "dirty bombs" that could threaten European countries.

The risk of nuclear attack has forced the international community to intervene immediately. France has reacted the fastest by transferring the elite 13th half-brigade from Djibouti to Ivory Coast.

Among the several hundred men is Senior Corporal Claude Boulet. Based on tests of character he has been appointed to lead the most difficult operation of the war. Never, in his darkest dreams, did Claude expect the trouble he found himself in. From now on he will always associate Côte d'Ivoire with the war path he had to tread in the defense of freedom and democracy.

America's Army is one of the five most popular PC action games played online. It provides players with the most authentic military experience available, from exploring the development of Soldiers in individual and collective training to their deployment in simulated missions in the War on Terror.

ThinkTanks 1.1 - Charge in, take aim and take off

ThinkTanks is a tank combat game designed to be a blast for the new and experienced gamer alike with lighthearted, fast paced pandemonium. Either battling against brain-hungry bots in solo play or going head-to-head against others online, ThinkTanks has something for everyone. It offers different game modes.

Solo Play

You find yourself in a ThinkTank... just one of many brain slaves imprisoned by Alien Mind Control-- only you have managed to escape their brain rays. But the moment you are free, you are besieged on all sides by insane bot-tanks. You must destroy or be destroyed and keep on your toes at all times. Luckily you can collect powerups that give you wacky weapons to help you stay alive. As you progress through each level, the bot tanks get smarter, stronger and crazier as Alien Mind Control reprograms the bot tanks to match your wits. Your goal is to beat the bosses, then rescue your brain-brethren and continue the fight on other worlds.

Quickplay Battle Mode

Upon entering, you are immediately engaged by heavy artillery. This is no-holds-barred warfare and to the victor go the points. You can be catapulted or thrust in any direction by rolling over the boost and jump pads to escape attack or rush the enemy. The lush, green hills are scattered with bots on the warpath, bots choking in their own smoke, floating orbs with special powers and ammunition, boulders, trees, AND the dreaded pit of doom. The goal here is to keep your brain intact, and triumph over bots of every shape, size, speed and skill.

Scrum

You are cast into a veritable feeding frenzy of tanks. You need to simultaneously track the position of your tank relative to the scrum ball using your radarscope, while navigating your tank along the bumpy terrain. If you are quick enough to pick up the ball yourself, you must make a mad dash to the goal, evading the thirsty pack of mad bots heavy on your trail. You win by capturing the most scrum balls in the allotted time.

Both On-line BattleMode and Scrum games have team-play variants and online chat that allow players to play together cooperatively.

WarRock - Free first person fighting game

Opinions in the game playing world seem to be deeply divided over this multiplayer war shoot-em-up. Whilst Softonic users have made it one of the most popular game downloads on the site, one game player says, “Its so bad that it's a crime against humanity that makes the holocaust seem like a stubbed toe in comparison.”

War Rock is yet another in a long line of Korean games such as Kal Online and Gunz Online that feature plenty of blood letting on the battlefield. Anyone who has played the Battlefield series will be familiar with the format of War Rock. Once connected to the server, you can choose one of the three game modes before being guided to the lobby where you team-up with team mates or chill-out before war. There’s also a random game generator where people join together in a massive free-for-all. This can result in some particularly violent sessions as many people log on just to release their frustrations rather than play the game properly.

You can then pick one of the five characters - engineer, medic, scout, soldier or heavy weapons expert. If you decide you don’t like your choice but don’t want to quit the game, the best thing is to commit suicide as you are granted a “resurrection” after which you can reincarnate as a different character. Don’t spend too much time thinking about it, since you can choose again after death. Note that if you want some real bloodthirsty action, choose the heavy weapon expert character – he gets to use an M-60 or rocket launcher. The engineer only gets a spanner whilst the medic gets a bucket and sponge. Whichever character you choose, you have to fulfil a set of missions and win a series of medals to progress to the next battlefield.

A map guides you through the game showing you where medical kits, engineering and ammo bases can be found and used. The movement of the character however can operate rather strangely. You can move well forwards but going sideways is painfully slow and this is really annoying when you are under heavy artilery fire.

The drawbacks to this game are numerous and have been detailed on countless forums. For a start, the weapons don’t really act in a realistic manner as they hit exactly where it's pointed even if you're running, jumping or even being hit by grenades and gunfire. The result is that you can beat snipers easily with just a cap-gun which makes the gameplay far too easy. In many cases, you don’t even have to fire to kill your opponents. Simply getting into a tank for example instils such fear in the enemy that many just collapse in front of your eyes in an apparent act of suicide. The aim of the tank cannon isn’t terribly important either – as long as you hit the fire button in the general direction of those that remain, you are pretty much guaranteed to massacre them all. Destroying tanks is not so easy however – the anti-tank missile launchers are not much more powerful than a machine gun so you’ll spend a lot of ammo just trying make a chink in the armour.

The sound of the weapons is also surprisingly poor with the M15 sounding like a beanie gun at times. The other major drawback is lag-time which users blame on the coding and server overload. Although you can play against players in other parts of the world, the time lag can be so severe that after having shot someone, it can take up to 5 minutes before they keel over and die.

On the plus side, War Rock has low system requirements meaning even older PCs handle it with ease. It’s also entirely free to download and play which is unusual for a game of its size and popularity. It also offers a wide variety of combat situations and scenarios (how many other games can you choose to simply observe a war from a medic’s perspective?). The vehicle combat over ground and through water is also particularly good as is the sophisticated system of progression as you advance the game which you’ll do pretty quickly because its far too easy.

Overall, there are better battle games out there but if you enjoy an easy killing spree, then you’ll love War Rock.
