This little portable version of desktop Lingoes looks very promising: support for eighty languages, pronunciation of words, automatic translation and/or definition of selected words in documents or web pages are some of its most outstanding features.

However there are a few issues that let it down a bit. To begin with, the interface in Portable Lingoes is not exactly the paradigm of ease of use; the confusing design takes a while to get used to. Also, you can't help feeling a bit disappointed when you realize most dictionaries must be downloaded separately – well, at least they're free.

Once you get over these flaws, Portable Lingoes is a really handy tool, especially for those who frequently work with different languages. The program includes an extensive configuration menu and offers immediate results both in dictionary look-ups and translation tasks, which are powered by Google Translator.

Despite an initially confusing interface and the fact that you have to download dictionaries separately, Portable Lingoes is still a nice, handy online dictionary and translation tool.

The big advantage of Translate.net is that it scans multiple translation sites for languages that you need to translate to and from. The good thing here is that you don't have to go online and tediously surf the net for translators and by using translators from different sources, you can much more accurate and better translations. The annoying thing however is that the program displays advertisements within the program based on the translation texts that you are searching on. However, the developers assure that Translate.Net does not collect any personal data or use any aggressive advertising techniques on it's users. One thing worth mentioning however is that this program is completely open source which means that the advertising feature may be possible to remove, or at least block, if you have some C++ programming knowledge.

A great solution for those that translate regularly although be prepared to be bombarded with adverts.

IdiomaX Office Translator shows up as one more toolbar on the interface of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Frontpage, Publisher and Visio. From this toolbar you can translate the whole document, or just selected text. In any case the translated text will be saved into another file. It's probably not the best idea in terms of usability, but at least it makes sure you never lose the original version.

IdiomaX Office Translator works with several types of dictionaries, each one of them specializing into a certain topic, and also supports a wide array of language pairs (English, Spanish, Italian, German, French) though the trial version only lets you test Spanish and English.

Other interesting extras include a verb conjugating tool and a direct access to look up words on an online dictionary.

In that case you can use a traditional dictionary o take a faster detour by launching GoNaomi. This app works as a dictionary for 39 different languages and enables you to combine them all in search of the perfect translation. Each language contains about 1,000 entries.

GoNaomi includes popular languages as well as other ones which are not so common, like Tagalog, Ukrainian or Belorussian. You only have to select your source and target languages and enter the terms you're looking for.

On the downside, the program is not embedded into the browser in any way (which would have been easier to translate online texts) and requires a restart every time you change the language selection.

GoNaomi is a fairly complete dictionary with support for quite a high number of languages, but which unfortunately fails to integrate with the browser.

goot is a cross platform translation tool that aims to harness this power conveniently on your desktop. It allows you to use plug-ins to integrate it with a huge number of online translators, the principle one being Google Translate (which is included by default). If you want a plug-in for a translation site that's not available, as long as you know a bit of Java you can make your own.

The big disadvantage of goot though is that it's only suitable for single words and sentences. It can't translate huge chunks of text or entire web pages. It does, however, auto-detect the language the source was written in, making it useful if you're constantly interchanging texts. Translations are generally very good and delivered quickly although it obviously depends on the plug-in you are using.

goot is a handy way to bring powerful translation tools to your desktop, although it's a shame it doesn't translate more than a few words at once.

This simple app lets you translate Micrososft Word documents (DOC files) in several language combinations, including English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. The specific language pair can be chosen from a drop-down menu, but you can't create new pairs. Also, there are some combinations missing, such as English-German.

IdiomaX Translator works as a step-by-step wizard, guiding you through the process of translation. First you choose the document to translate, then the language pair, then you spell-check the text for missing translations and you finally revise the outcome. There's also the possibility to use the translator while browsing the web, thanks to a special IdiomaX toolbar that is seamlessly embedded into the browser – only in Internet Explorer, that is.

On the downside, the translations made by the program were not precisely brilliant. I know automatic translators are always far from perfect, but honestly, this one was especially cryptic.
