Cry of the Infected - Attack of the zombies!

Imagine you've turned into a Zombie and lost your wife and now you have to find her again. Sound like an unlikely scenario?

Well not in Cry of the Infected where you play the role of Robert, a man trying to find his missing wife in a city torn apart by the zombie outbreak. You are constantly pursued by teams of soldiers that are running amok while the zombies attempt to take over town. Robert is confronted by the apocalyptic state of his city which is on the verge of tearing itself apart which is why everyone is turning into zombies. The game takes the format of a first person role playing game and features some pretty basic but fun 3D graphics. There are 13 levels of action although the developers say that playing time is a maximum of a few hours with an alternate ending possible if you find a mysterious secret weapon. It's obvious that the developers have kept detail down to a minimum - there's not much in the way of anything but soldiers and zombies running around but at least this makes it easy to play and follow. However, it would have been considerably better if they'd put a bit more effort into throwing in a few more detailed graphics and a slightly expanded plot and narrative.

A fun and simple zombie game although you won't need more than a few hours to complete it.

Penumbra: Black Plague - Dark and creepy psychological thriller

If you like horror movies and you love PC games then Penumbra: Black Plague will probably be right up your street.

You take the role of Phillip, who must find out what happened to his father, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. You are trapped in a shadowy, underground complex where threats, ghouls and ghosts are waiting to pounce. To prevent succumbing to their clutches, you must collect clues and solve puzzles while dealing with psychological traumas that prevent you in your quest.

Indeed, it seems the main aim of this game, apart from finding your father, is maintaining your hero's sanity. The eerie mood is bolstered by a creepy soundtrack and sound effects that crank up the tension as you struggle with your puzzles. The game uses some terrific 3D graphics and what the developers call "real-time lightning" that give the game a high degree of depth and realism. The game's plot links together very well with successive puzzles that you solve and I like the way that the game imposes few limits on what you can and can't do in the game. You can for example pick up more or less anything you see and move them around by dragging and dropping them with your mouse.

For atmosphere, this game wins full marks although it's very slow moving and if you're not the puzzle solving type, you'll probably lose interest very quickly.

Zombie Shooter - Can you take on the zombies?

Zombie Shooter is an action game based on a simple premise - mad scientists have unleashed zombies on the world and now you have to stop them.

The scientists created the zombies in a hidden laboratory and you are one of the few people who can save mankind from their mistake. The game is very similar to Gauntlet although there have been some changes. You are soldier armed to the teeth with weapons, mainly pistols, rifles and explosives but the basics are the same. As in Gauntlet however, the enemies do not have any kind of Artificial Intelligence, but they are constantly launched against you in a mass suicide pact.

The graphics are incredibly detailed although you'll need good eyesight because the top down view is very distant. You have 10 types of weapon and you can boost your character by improving the character’s skills along your way and allows you to upgrade available arms with the money earned. You can also practice your killing skills in two modes - survival and gun stand.

If you like the sim-city style graphics and have something against zombies, you'll enjoy this although it takes a long time to get anywhere so make sure you've got a few hours spare per session.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate - First person combat game in an aerospace compound

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate is a new chapter in the F.E.A.R. trilogy which offers all the original thrills of the first game but brings a new scenario and new missions to complete. Possibly the major difference you'll notice however is that this chapter is considerably quicker than the original.

Like in the original game, in F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate you use a range of specialised arms and a few added physical extensions that enable to dodge enemy bullets and hunt the haunted spirits which follow you throughout the game. In fact, this is a genuinely haunting game and lives up to the F.E.A.R. tag. The game employs what the developers call "rag-doll" graphics meaning that when you shoot someone, the physical reactions are incredibly realistic.

Add this to the arsenal of weapons you can choose from such as particle beam weapons and laser guns, you'll have fun simply blowing the hell out of people. Be warned though that the difficulty level is very high on this chapter and you'll do well to even pass the first stage on your first few games.

A great first person combat game that will have you hooked and haunted for hours.

Clive Barker's Jericho - Unleash the horror in this scary adventure

When I was little I used to play Alone in the Dark on my brother's PC and I was scared to death, especially if I played at night. Now I find Alone's graphics hilarious and I wonder how I would have felt if I played Clive Barker's Jericho instead.

I warn you: this is probably one of the scariest games you've ever seen, so don't play it at night. The demo allows you to play one single level, but that's enough to feel like you're starring a horror movie. Inside those dark and pestilent sewers, you'll experience anguish when hearing approaching steps and fear when facing unknown monsters; you'll feel strange noises and see putrid corpses on the floors. But you've got an ace up your sleeve: as the game allows you to control the whole team, you'll be able to switch between team members and test their different abilities, such as moving objects or even healing other team members.

Unfortunately our gaming PC fell a bit short of the system requirements, but overall I was able to get a very good impression of the game's amazing graphics.

Clive Barker's Jericho immerses you in a gloomy world depicted with a terrifyingly high level of detail.

Bioshock Demo - Welcome to Rapture, welcome to terror

After reading a lot about this game I was looking forward to test it and I must say I'm still impressed. It makes you feel like you were right in the middle of a terror movie.

Bioshock doesn't make things easy for you. First of all, you'll need a high performance computer in order to properly enjoy it. Then, besides hardware requirements, the adventure begins with a terrible airplane accident from which you're the only survivor. Confusion and anguish will seize you while you desperately try to survive. When you finally find a mysterious platform in the middle of the ocean, the real adventure is just about to begin. Bioshock mixes action, terror and puzzles to build a highly elaborated, absorbing plot that will get you hooked.

The game is easy to control, with the usual WASD keyboard combination. Regarding graphics, Bioshock justifies its hardware demands by offering an excellent quality and a high level of detail. Music adds the final touch to an action-packed, terror adventure you won't easily forget.

Anderson and the Legacy of Cthulhu - Work your way through this horrific storyline

Personally I love a good war game, and am also a big fan of the horror genre (not at night-time though). Hence, I really enjoyed Anderson and the Legacy of Cthulhu as it manages to blend the two to good effect. Part of the appeal of the game is the interesting way it blends story narration with creepy gameplay to create a unique interactive experience.

You simply click on a chapter of the book to enter the narration before being whisked into battle in the way you would in a normal action game. Graphically, the game makes good use of lighting effects to keep things pretty eerie, although the backgrounds and characters are a little simplistic. That said, Anderson and the Legacy of Cthulhu boasts a cracking soundtrack that's enough to put the willies up even the most hardened horror fan.

Hypermaze is a first-person shooter game (more like an arcade) where you move in a 4D maze and shoot monsters. If you are not completely familiar with the concept of 4th dimension, don't worry because the first levels of the game go in 3D, and you will get the hang of it fast enough.

The maze consists of cells, and there are four types of cells in the maze: simple corridors, cells which regularly respawn monsters, cells which respawn ammo and health bonuses, and finally, the exit cell which you have to reach in the end.

A large variety of weapons, impressive powers and an excellent control are some of the most outstanding points in this action game.

Dashing. Debonair. Has showered sometime during the past 26 years. Words that don't describe Edward "Stubbs" Stubblefield, whose short life came to an ignominious end in 1933. The failed Depression-era salesman found himself shotgunned in the stomach and buried in an unmarked Pennsylvania countryside grave.

Fast forward nearly three decades to 1959. The field where Stubbs was buried is now part of Punchbowl, a glamorous futuristic city founded by billionaire Andrew Monday. He hired the world's best scientists and engineers to design a pristine metropolis where robots perform menial labor and cars can fly.

On the day of Punchbowl's grand opening, however, Stubbs stirs in his grave. He awakens, a zombie determined to find the person responsible for his demise. Along the way, his brain-eating escapades help him amass an undead army and build his assortment of deadly weapons, including gut grenades, unholy flatulence, toxic sputum and the ability to possess unsuspecting humans with his detachable left hand.
