Rainlendar is a lightweight and customizable calendar for your desktop.

When I first launched Rainlendar I was impressed by the widget-like appearance. Widget are small, handy gadgets that can pop up on your screen to show you all types of information, from weather forecasts, to stock charts or the time and date. They are usually small, attractive and very discreetly fit on your desktop. Rainlendar’s elements similarly have that cloud-like feel. The notes, events and calendar windows float around on your desktop and can be moved about your screen and disappear or reappear in a touch.

Rainlendar stands out from classic calendar programs thanks to a highly customizable interface and the possibility to quickly and effortlessly jot down notes and important events. Although it only comes with two different skins, the program offers a link to www.customize.org, where you should find the style which suits your tastes. But Rainlendar doesn’t stop there. You can set up hotkeys to manage Rainlendar at the push of a key and, thanks to various plug-ins present in the program, integrate Rainlendar directly to other utilities like Outlook and iCalendar. Rainlendar is always within reach as a tray icon on your desktop and bringing it up just takes a click of your mouse.

Unfortunately Rainlendar’s real originality is also its weakness. The program offers a wide range of skins but adding these to the program is far from straightforward. You have to drag your downloaded skin into the Skins folder for the Rainlendar program file and then browse to the new skin from the ‘Edit Skin’ option in Rainlendar’s drop down menu.

If you like to keep your calendar on your PC, but find the one offered by Windows too dull, Rainlendar is a good alternative. You’ll enjoy setting your own style and the way it discreetly fits onto your desktop.

There's plenty of DVD and CD managers out there but there are few that allow you to organise DVDs, CDs, DivX files and even cassettes in one easy to browse and search database.

Since I'd rather have my video and audio collection all under one program, I quite liked Ant Movie Catalog. First of all, it's completely free and the source code is open to modification by its users who are brought together by the program's forum. There are several reasons why this database appeals.

First of all is simplicity - it's not bloated in any way so searching and navigating through your collection either by format, genre, alphabetically or year is extremely easy and fast. Second of all, it takes a lot of the hard work out of cataloguing your collection because it imports information about your media from the internet using scripts. These include scripts for the IMDB, DVDFR (a French DVD website), Allocine /a French film site) and Culturalia (a Spanish multimedia site).

In addition, it can store all information in two formats - either binary or XML - the latter makes it possible to export your collection to Excel and other database applications. If you do add too many album and film covers to Ant Movie Catalog, it can start to slow down a bit but there is the option of linking to external pictures rather than importing them. You can also display in graphical format, stats relating to your multimedia collection - how many of a certain format you have, genre, date etc.

Lightweight, easy to use and covering just about any conceivable media you might own, Ant Movie Catalog is an easy and free way to bring your collection together.

It may be the middle of the year, but being the excitable types we are, the Softonic team's thoughts are already turning to Christmas and possible gift ideas. Stumbling across EZ Photo Calendar Creator, we realized that next year's ultimate present could lie in a single download.

The application is designed to help you produce a customized calendar made up of your own images, and we were impressed by the sheer range of ways in which you can customize your creation, making it ideal for sharing the past year's highlights with friends and family. Options include a choice of three modes of date display – standard, designer and family planner, the latter of which separates each date into four rows to help your clan map out the year ahead on the same page.

The tweaks you can make don't stop there either. Not only can you pick the type of calendar you want, but you can set the number and position of images on each page, choose front and back cover pictures, and of course, pick a photo for each month of the year. Thanks to the well-arranged tools and the use of drag-and-drop, cobbling your calendars together proves to be as fun as it should be.

Of course, if you want to print your calendar without watermarked text, then you'll need to purchase the upgrade.. Considering the amount of money spent on calendars every year and the fun you can get out of a family collage project, this calendar creator represents great value.

When you have all your music on your PC, it’s really important to have it well sorted and catalogued so you can always reach your favorite tracks. But making sure your music library is kept up to date is a gargantuan task to say the least. Even though this is relatively easy to do in iTunes, you can also use a program specifically made to handle this chore. eTunes is a music organizer with which you can create play lists, rewrite ID3 tags and rearrange your music library. Since eTunes doesn’t actually load up any of your tracks it barely takes up any memory and you don’t have to worry about it slowing down your PC while you are entering modifications to your track titles.

It only takes a few minutes to get to grips with eTunes. Once the program has loaded the information for all your songs from iTunes, it displays a list of your complete music library. All you need to do is select the entries you wish to modify and type in the modifications. Luckily you can make changes in batch, something that comes in handy if you need to change the name of an artist and don’t want to work your way track by track. The search bar at the bottom of the program is rather rudimentary but it comes in handy looking for a particular song. While eTunes is not a music player it still lets you listen to your favorite songs. Clicking on the big play button at the top left will launch the selected track in your default music player.

eTunes is a modest little program to help you organize your tracks. While it sports a clean interface and convenient tools, I’m not sure it offers anything that iTunes doesn’t.

DeltaCalendar is a neat software which displays a calendar on your desktop. The way the calendar is displayed is completely customizable, you can change the color, font, sizes, borders and margins. You can also add memos to your calendar, each for a specific day, a memo can be of single, weekly, monthly or yearly type. Folder management is something that can easily be improved on in Windows and The Magic Folder aims to do exactly this.

The Magic Folder is basically a utility that helps you categorize and move files. When you drag a file into the utility, it will look at the file extension and place Document files (like DOC, XLS, PPT, etc) in the Documents folder. The same principle works for other file extensions - image files like (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, etc) are automatically placed into the Pictures folder. It's not fixed in stone however where the files you go. You can add/remove file extensions recognized by The Magic Folder and change where files go or even add your own folder locations. Alternatively, you can configure the program to prompt you for the storage location each time you move a folder.

The program does not operate entirely independently of Windows Explorer - when you click The Magic Folder you can select from the list of folders you want to access and then jump directly to that folder in Windows Explorer.
