Being a Java-based app, the truth is that Golden Rules Organizer doesn't have a very eye-catching interface, but this is no drawback for it to be fairly user-friendly. When I first launched Rainlendar I was impressed by the widget-like appearance. Widget are small, handy gadgets that can pop up on your screen to show you all types of information, from weather forecasts, to stock charts or the time and date. They are usually small, attractive and very discreetly fit on your desktop. Rainlendar’s elements similarly have that cloud-like feel. The notes, events and calendar windows float around on your desktop and can be moved about your screen and disappear or reappear in a touch.

Rainlendar stands out from classic calendar programs thanks to a highly customizable interface and the possibility to quickly and effortlessly jot down notes and important events. Although it only comes with two different skins, the program offers a link to www.customize.org, where you should find the style which suits your tastes. But Rainlendar doesn’t stop there. You can set up hotkeys to manage Rainlendar at the push of a key and, thanks to various plug-ins present in the program, integrate Rainlendar directly to other utilities like Outlook and iCalendar. Rainlendar is always within reach as a tray icon on your desktop and bringing it up just takes a click of your mouse.

Managing personal information can be tricky not knowing whether to risk keeping it online or saving it offline where it could easily be lost or stolen.

EssentialPIM Free is an award-winning and free personal information manager which can be used on desktop or a USB drive. EssentialPIM can securely schedule your day, manage your contacts, keep track of your To Do plans and organize your notes. This is quite a lot for one program to do and some aspects are better than others. For example, the contacts list is pretty comprehensive allowing you to add more or less anything.

However, the EssentialPIM organizer is much more limited and doesn't offer much scope for adding and removing events or customizing them in certain ways. At the same time, it does make integration between your contacts and organizer much more effective than simply relying on two separate apps.

If you need an easy way of organizing your life and keeping track of various other personal appointments and details in one app, EssentialPIM is a very useful app.

There's plenty of DVD and CD managers out there but there are few that allow you to organise DVDs, CDs, DivX files and even cassettes in one easy to browse and search database.

Since I'd rather have my video and audio collection all under one program, I quite liked Ant Movie Catalog. First of all, it's completely free and the source code is open to modification by its users who are brought together by the program's forum. There are several reasons why this database appeals.

First of all is simplicity - it's not bloated in any way so searching and navigating through your collection either by format, genre, alphabetically or year is extremely easy and fast. Second of all, it takes a lot of the hard work out of cataloguing your collection because it imports information about your media from the internet using scripts. These include scripts for the IMDB, DVDFR (a French DVD website), Allocine /a French film site) and Culturalia (a Spanish multimedia site).

In addition, it can store all information in two formats - either binary or XML - the latter makes it possible to export your collection to Excel and other database applications. If you do add too many album and film covers to Ant Movie Catalog, it can start to slow down a bit but there is the option of linking to external pictures rather than importing them. You can also display in graphical format, stats relating to your multimedia collection - how many of a certain format you have, genre, date etc.

Lightweight, easy to use and covering just about any conceivable media you might own, Ant Movie Catalog is an easy and free way to bring your collection together.

One thing there's never too much of in my opinion is organisational software to help scattered brains keep their life in order.

Task Coach is a simple open source task manager which helps you manage personal and to-do tasks and lists in an easy to use and intuitive way. The developer claims that Task Coach grew out of his frustration that well-known task managers, such as those provided with Outlook or Lotus Notes, do not provide facilities for composite tasks. The point being, tasks and to-do lists consist of several activities and most organizers only allow for one entry.

Task Coach enables you to create, edit and delete tasks and sub tasks meaning it's much more easy to see where and why certain tasks have to be done as they link to one main, master task. Tasks in Task Coach can be labeled with a subject, description, priority, start date, due date, a completion date and an optional reminder. They can also be viewed as a list or as a tree and sorted by attributes, e.g. subject, budget, budget left, due date, etc. For those working to a time schedule, Task Coach also allow you to track time spent on certain jobs or tasks.

As useful as Task Coach is however, you can't help feeling you spend more time tinkering and fiddling with the number of fields to fill in in Task Coach than anything else.

As far as easy to use task schedulers go Task Coach is one of the more user friendly and intelligent out there although maybe it's a little over the top for most people's needs.
