Spaceships and asteroids have served to create arcade classics for time immemorial and Max Fighter brings together all the old elements for a blast from the past.

You basically find your spaceship hurtling through an asteroid field which is growing in intensity the further you go into space. Not only that, but you're under attack from pirates intent on blowing you out of the galaxy. Well, that's the basics of Max Fighter and to be frank, it's pretty chaotic and crazy and sometimes hard to tell the pirates from the asteroids but at the same time, it's quite gripping.

The interesting part of Max Fighter is that you have to shoot the asteroids and floating containers that litter space and collect power-ups, shields and special weapons along the way. The weapons however only seem the range from a small gun to a big gun although with old skool graphics like these, what more do you expect.

Max Fighter brings together classic elements of space invaders and throws them all together in one heady, crazy mix.

Just when you thought another variation on Pong! wasn't possible comes Space Ping Pong - a psychedelic space-age version of the classic game.

Space Ping Pong is basically Pong! with psychedelic music, weird and wonderful graphics but with the same addictive gameplay. There are two modes of gameplay - against the computer or against a friend although you both have to use the same keyboard.

In this demo version, the maximum you can score in one strike is 7 points. The graphics basically look a more blurry of the original Pong! but the gameplay is virtually identical except there's a few added sound effects. The problem is it doesn't really add anything to the original except some slightly more colourful graphics.

Space Ping Pong is probably only appealing for all those hardcore Pong! fans that just can't get enough.

If you still prefer old school classics such as Pac-Man, Arkanoid or Space Invaders, you can't miss this game.

A title such as The Attack of Mutant Fruits from Outer Space should already give you an approximate idea of what this is all about. The game is a simple remake of the classic Space Invaders, only that this time spaceships and rockets have been replaced with fruits and vegetables of all kinds.

Your mission, should you accept it, consists on wiping out waves of these creatures before they reach the bottom part of your screen.

I know, I know, it sounds easy, but the sometimes maddening speed that the fruits reach makes it a bit frustrating. For those who are quick enough, The Attack of Mutant Fruits from Outer Space includes 10 levels ready for you to complete and enjoy.

The Attack of Mutant Fruits from Outer Space is an original free remake of Space Invaders with fruits and vegetables as main characters.

Ultra TicTacToe 1.0 - The classic TicTacToe game on your PC

TicTacToe was always known to me as Noughts and Crosses but whatever you want to call it, it has to be one of the simplest games ever devised.

Which is why it's hard to justify why it needs a PC version (surely a simple pen and paper will do) but nevertheless, if you're a bit bored, Ultra TicTacToe will wile away a few minutes or hours. However, don't download it hoping to play against a friend - it's you versus the PC only.

Ultra TicTacToe features two difficulty levels - Easy and Hard and herein lies one of it's major faults. Easy level is ridiculously easy - you'd have to be pretty bad not to beat the PC at this level. However, Difficult level in Ultra TicTacToe is extremely difficult and no matter how many times you try, the PC always seems to have the upper hand or it ends in a tie. Since there aren't many variations possible in the game of TicTacToe, Ultra TicTacToe can inevitably become exceedingly boring but it's not designed to be played over a prolonged period of time to be fair.

If you love TicTacToe, have no one to play against and want to waste a few minutes, then Ultra TicTacToe is a good time filler - just don't try it on the hard level.

Snake Charmer 1.0 - The classic Snake game in widescreen

Just when you thought that the snake concept had died on the PC and was relegated to the world of free mobile phone games, Snake Charmer arrives.

Snake Charmer has nothing to do with Indian men playing music to dancing pythons in sacks or boxes. It's quite simply the classic Snake game. Snake Charmer is one more snake clone. Snake Charmer has clearly been designed with the office worker in mind - one of it's few "extras" is a Boss Key that you can hit if you get caught wasting time while you should be working.

In addition, there is a top score list should you want to prove your superiority to friends and there are a few levels to choose from which differ only in the speed at which the snake travels across your screen. It would have been far more interesting if the developers had tried to give Snake a modern new look with realistic snake style graphics but as it is, Snake Charmer looks like something you might have played on your Commodore VIC20.

It doesn't look pretty and it's no classic version of Snake but if you're a snake fan, you'll enjoy Snake Charmer for just a few minutes at least.

Wazzal 1.2 - An Asteroids-style space pirates adventure

Wazzal features the classic Asteroids perspective and gameplay– a zenithal point of view and rotational movements – but in a totally different game.

Wazzal is set in the year 2314, when the human race has expanded to some other planets in the Solar System and you work as part of the crew in a cargo spaceship. When war breaks out, it's your turn to take control of the ship and fight for survival as a space pirate.

Your overall aim in Wazzal is to gather a complete fleet of ships so that you can defeat more powerful enemies. You'll be assigned different missions, usually involving traveling from one planet to another, meeting other people and eventually engaging in space battles.

Despite this original plot, I found Wazzal to be a bit disappointing, especially the graphics, which are not as good as I expected. Also, gameplay in Wazzal is so different from other games it makes it really difficult to control the spaceship.

Wazzal is a new twist to Asteroids clones: a space pirates adventures that unfortunately may be a bit too difficult to play.

Reincarnation 0.51a - A truly chaotic old-school space shooter

Do you remember those good old Space Invaders games we all used to play in arcades not so long ago? Now you can relive those days with Reincarnation.

This frantic space shooter closely follows the "Kill 'em all" motto. There are no stages, just you and your spaceship in a vertically sliding setting, against endless waves of enemy ships which will constantly fall from the top part of the screen. This layout, the game's design, its pixelated graphics, its playability… it all reminds of those typical 80s titles.

That said, the truth is that Reincarnation is quite chaotic in every aspect: menus are hardly readable, the two available weapon types use the same key and what's more, the screen is so incredibly crammed with enemy spaceships and shots that it's virtually impossible to stay alive for more than five minutes. This unbelievable difficulty is what makes the game a bit disappointing, because you can't really enjoy for long.

Reincarnation is a nice try at getting old Space Invades style games, but the game is too chaotic and incredibly difficult.

Tetro Challenge 1.0 - Great free blocks puzzle with four gaming modes

They say old classics never die, and I guess this sentence could be also applied to some videogames.

Tetro Challenge is a remake of the popular Russian puzzle that features the same playability and addiction level as the original game. In fact I've had to force myself into writing this review before spending too much time testing it!

This colorful Blocks clone features several different gaming modes (Challenge, Destroyer, Panic and Bricklayer), a decent soundtrack and sound effects and quite a few challenges to keep you hooked for a while during a pause from work. So, depending on the type of game you choose, you'll have to fight against extra blocks, weirdly shaped pieces and other obstacles.

On the downside, I missed having two ways to rotate bricks like in the original game (in Tetro Challenge you have to choose between clockwise or counter-clockwise). Also, I didn't like the fact that the game opens up its own website every time you play it.

Despite these minor flaws, Tetro Challenge is a very entertaining, decent puzzle game that will keep you amused for hours.

Jardinains 2 - An Arkanoid type game starring garden gnomes

Jardinains 2 is a fun and original twist on the block breaking genre that reminds me of something I might have played on my Atari 20 years ago.

It's slightly more advanced than Pong but not much! Basically, you have a paddle and a bouncing ball that require you to destroy a bunch of bricks. However, the twist is that inside the bricks are what are called "nairns". Nairns are basically little critters that are there to make your life hell. They throw things at your paddle and basically attempt to stop you from cracking open any of the remaining bricks. Your aim is to strike the nairns with your ball and knock them out of action. However, the fun doesn't stop there - you can bounce the little critters off your padel to destroy even more bricks so it's quite satisfying in a sadistic way. Using their bodies, you can clear a screen much faster although it's quite an ordeal trying to keep a ball and several critters flying up in the air for several minutes at a time. This demo version is only limited to a few levels and you are prompted to buy the game when you close it down. Whether you decide to buy or not depends on whether you can see much worth in bouncing critters against bricks for long. Personally, I got bored after a few minutes although if you've had a bad day at the office, it's a good way to get some agression out. Oh, and don't expect wonders in the graphics or sound deapartment - this is proudly an old skool style game.

An interesting take on the Pong genre although they needed to make it a bit more interesting to hold my attention.

If you know Arkanoid, you already know what this game is about (and by the way, if you don't know what Arkanoid is, you've got a problem!).

Joking aside, Nannoid is a decent Arkanoid clone with more than twenty different levels that challenges you to break all the bricks in the wall without letting the ball fall off the paddle. Luckily you're not alone in this mission: you can count on several extras and bonuses that help you successfully complete your tasks. You'll get also extra points for exploding all those "weird floaty things" (as defined by the author) on each level.

Summing up, Nannoid is a simple, fun game that's perfect for a short, relaxing break from home. The only drawback is sound effects, which could be greatly improved.

Have some quick fun games with this colorful Arkanoid clone.

Breakout in Space 2.0 - Breakout clone in classic 80's style

The objective of Breakout in Space is it to keep a ball in the game (with the help of your game board) until all breakable game blocks are destroyed. The ball can be launched from the center of the board to the northeast or northwest direction by pressing the space bar or control key. With the arrow keys, the game board can be moved left and right. Some game blocks must be hit several times with the ball. When all blocks are destroyed you pass on to the next level. If the ball gets into an endless loop, the problem can be solved by one or repeated pressing of the key X.

In some game blocks, some special objects are hidden. If they hit the board, special actions will be executed (the ball becomes slower, the board becomes larger, rockets are fired, ...). But not all objects are advantageous. With the introduction of a new object the previous action expires. The game begins with two spare lives. After a ball loss or with the beginning of a new level the original ball, the original game board and the original number of lives will be restored.

So that you constantly do not have to begin again at the first level, after you have lost the game balls, you receive a password after the fourth, eighth, twelfth and sixteenth level. This password appears in the blue menu bar (at the upper edge of the screen). The passwords can be entered in the menu "Game - Password". After the twentieth level the game is over. The player who finishes all twenty levels, gets as a reward a password for all levels. With these passwords you can play your favorite levels at any time. There are two parts of this game with different levels. The passwords are the same in both versions. So, you have another chance to finish the game to get all twenty passwords.

Sonic Games 1.0 - Remember Sonic? Relive the old days with this game collection

Sonic Games is a set of arcade games with the famous blue hedgehog as protagonist. From the main program's page you can select among 7 games listed in the game menu. The titles sound exciting: Sonic 3D Snowboarding, Sonic Character Designer, Sonic Lost in Mario World, Sonic Pacman, Sonic Tetris, Sonica and Ultimate Sonic.

The application lacks of basic functions, like pause, but at least the game's frame is resizable. The idea of a collection of Sonic games is really nice, but it's a pity that the playability is as good in the original MegaDrive version and that the graphics are so scarce. They would probably be still enjoyable on mobile devices, but on Windows, the experience ends up being pretty boring.

If you are a fan of Sonic, you might want to have this set of games for Windows, but mainly for collection purposes rather than to play with them as both graphics and playability are pretty poor.

Realms 1.2 - Guide your spaceship safely through dangerous worlds

Let's face here, if you're not fascinated by Space then there's something seriously wrong with your brain. In fact, I'm sure the vast majority of Earthlings would jump at the chance to zoom off into the outer reaches of the Universe. Now, thanks to the wonders of modern gaming technology you can now do just this on your home computer.

Of course, you won't really be in Space, but install Realms and you'll definitely feel like you are thanks to its rich, colourful graphics, slick animation and pumping musical soundtrack. The game can take a little while to load up if you have a slower processor, and you'll be presented with a series of retro tech-style load screens that seem to take forever to get through.

Once you're into the actual game though it seems like the whole of the Universe is there to be explored, and you can whizz off for miles in any direction of the screen. Steering your craft can take a little getting used to, especially if you try to turn and fire at the same time, as the movements of the ship are quite fluid and perhaps not as precise as they should be.

Nevertheless, Realms is a monster of a game, with scores of baddies to blast, missions to conquer and power-ups to collect. There are loads of options for changing the difficulty of the game by tweaking about with the number of asteroids, hardness of baddies, speed of the game, overall difficulty, etc.

If you want to create the impression of hurtling through the galaxy while you're sat on the sofa, then Realms makes for a great adventure.

Rom Check Fail 1.0 - The best of arcade classics in one game

If you're a massive fan of the arcade classics than you will love or hate this game which combines the best of all them in one hell of a heady mix.

The game has been developed by the same team that brought the world Fishie Fishie and Polychromatic Funk Monkey - that gives you an idea of the eccentric minds we are dealing with here. The simple aim is to clear the screen of all enemies to complete each level, but the task is made difficult by the sudden switching of gameplay rules. When this happens, you suddenly find that ideas and concepts from old arcade classics such as Zelda and Super Mario Bros are suddenly thrown into the fray. The controls are fairly simple at least - just use the arrow keys to move and the space key acts as the "action" button. You can use the Left Alt and Enter keys combined to switch between full screen and windowed mode. Although there are about 20 levels, you'll probably get through the first 10 very quickly as the levels seem ridiculously short.

Nevertheless, this is a very original game although perhaps a bit too clever for its own good as it does get rather confusing at times.

Mono 1.03 - A visual experiment that lets you paint the screen while blasting colored balls

Originally written to test some routine functions, this program evolved to become Mono, a shooter that mixes the classic Asteroids game with Robotron with Paint Shop Pro. Picking up power ups as you go, you must shoot the large balls of color which then break in to several parts which you must also destroy. As you hit the balls, they leave what looks like a stain on the screen and soon you have a really cool multicolored background that then changes when your pod gets hit.

MineSweeper Online 1.4.0 - Play head-to-head or across the net

If you're a classic Minesweeper fan, then you'll probably love this as it gives you the chance to take on friends head-to-head and over the net.

MineSweeper features four levels ranging from beginner to expert and features all the classic graphics and gameplay of the original. Probably the most fun is the 4 player mode which challenges you to find all the flags, avoiding the bombs with the one who gets blown up the least the obvious winner. This mode is called "Hotseat" mode and is just as much fun with 2 players as 4. The best thing of all however is that you don't have to have any friends around to enjoy it - simply go to the master server list and with the IP address of your opponent, you can play directly against them. In the multiplayer versions, there are special features too such as bombs, random bombs, time limits and power-ups. There isn't much option skin wise although you can choose from Land based or Sea based skins. There's also an optional game log feature which saves records of each game. Plus, if you've never played Minesweeper before, there are comprehensive instructions at the beginning.

A superb version of Minesweeper which best of all, doesn't require anyone physically next to you to enjoy - just play against someone online anytime!

Star Ball 1.0 - Fast paced arkanoid remake

If you loved Arkanoid then you'll enjoy Star Ball. The scene is the edge of the galaxy where deep within an ancient culture you'll find an ancient artifact known as Star Ball.

Your quest is to find this artifact but it's protected by a rock solid wall of bricks. However, the Star Ball contains ancient knowledge that mankind has forgotten and needs to remember if it is to save itself. During your mission, you pilot a spaceship equipped with gravity shields and weaponry on your way to rescuing the Star Ball. Along the way, you'll find many many power-ups, such as laser guns, missiles, plasma balls, fire balls and much more. The powerups are probably the most entertaining past or the game in fact - there's so many to choose from and watching them go off is a real buzz. The music is also pretty cool although it gets a bit repetitive after a while. The other problem is that the numerous powerups end up making the game too easy - if you collect enough, you can complete the game pretty quickly by steaming through the bricks.

Nice gameplay and soundtrack but this game could do with less powerups and more challenges than just a few bricks.

plobb! 1.1.1 - Escape from the castle by spitting at your enemies

Plobb is a colorful, nice game with an original style in the design of characters. You're represented by a simple head, and your enemies are... bubbles.

The aim of the game is to escape from a castle where you've been kept prisoner by those evil bubbles (how can you take a bubble-shaped enemy seriously?), though you won't see any castle at all, as the game's background is just a squared color pattern. While running away from the castle, you'll need to get rid of enemies by spitting at them (yes, you didn't misread it, I said spitting).

As simple as it seems, Plobb will certainly challenge your agility and speed in controlling the mouse. Every time you spit, I mean, shoot an enemy it'll become smaller and eventually split into several creatures, until you can finally wipe it out. Some bubbles will give you power ups when disappearing from the screen, which is good because sometimes it takes ages to finish them.

In all, Plobb! is a casual fun game, perfect for a short break. It features an original design and lots of extras, but enemies are sometimes too hard to get rid of.

Kobo Deluxe 0.5.1 - Speed and strategy in this space battle

If you miss the taste of good ol' arcade classics, this is the perfect opportunity to go back in time and enjoy a true space battle.

Kobo is a Windows remake of Xkobo, a popular space shooter for X11 systems. This modern version achieves to maintain the look and feel of old arcade space games, including waves of colorful enemies to defeat, loads of explosions and a fast-paced soundtrack. Plus, it features joystick support so if you have one, plug it to your PC and you'll really feel back in the eighties!

Kobo's aim is simple: kill whatever moves on your screen and don't let your spaceship get in touch with anything. Your mission consists on destroying enemy space bases by firing their weak points: some of them are really easy but some others require more shooting. In fact, the only difficulty I found was the spaceship's movement itself: instead of drifting along, your ship moves following a grid pattern (such as, for example, the snake game in mobile phones) which takes a while to get used to.

Kobo is an old-style arcade game that provides nostalgic fun, but requires some ability to control the spaceship's movement.
